View Full Version : Protoform Oval Bodies
old_fart_racing 11-02-2004, 04:10 PM All:
Our distributor let me know that he should have the new Dodge R/T bodies this week and would be shipping them right out to us.
I'm guessing we'll have them in stock here early next week. I will post here again as soon as they hit our door.
Thanks all !
Jeff.
Any word yet on availabilty?
TeamGoodwrench 11-02-2004, 04:35 PM All:
I just talked to the distributor this morning. Nothing has shown up there yet. He is going to follow up with Protoform again today.
He did say that one of the other major distributors was not expecting to get their shipment of them until the middle of the month. Not sure if the timetable is slipping or what yet. I'll post again when I have more info.
Thanks guys !
The Jet 11-02-2004, 09:30 PM Sorry for the rough estimates, (I am at work and dont have calipers, only a ruler)
I measured the front (top of the body) from the middle of the wheel well - and it was a hair above 7 3/4"
The rear is kinda tough to measure by the wheel wells beause each car runs a different wheelbase, but its about 8".
Very similar to the HD Monte's measurements, the big difference between the 2 that I notice is the rear. On the Monte the rear end width pretty much stays the same all the way back to the bumper. The Dodge body flares in a tad much like the Taurus body.
EROCK, where did you get your bodies???

Erock is part of the PROTOform team, as myself.
This body is sweet...
I'll run it at Barre this weekend.
Steve.
erock1331 11-03-2004, 09:58 AM Bret,
Steve is right, I got my bodies directly from Proline as I came on board with them this past summer.
Most of the Proto guys, like Ziggy, Rocket Miller, Steve S. promote mostly in the mod class (Dodge and Monte bodies)
To where I promote in the Stock and 19T classes (Taurus and Dodge bodies).

Erock, why the difference in body type? Is it personal preference or is there a downforce/drag issue that causes the body choice for the different classes?
erock1331 11-03-2004, 11:27 AM Q-ball
Each body has a purpose.
1221 Taurus (Low Downforce)- Has the least amount of overall downforce and turning, narrower body - great for Banked Oval Tracks in stock and 19T.
1223 Monte HD (High Downforce) - Has the most overall downforce and turning capabilities of all the bodies, definately a flat track body, I have seen it used in all classes on flat carpet and also used for Mod racing on banked tracks and low grip apshalt and cap tire tracks.
1224 Dodge R/T MD (Medium downforce) - Adds the best of both worlds, it is shaped to give great "turn-in" and balance without sacrificing straightaway speed. It has a small spoiler molded into the deck to stiffen the rear of the body and an add-on spoiler to increase rear down force.
This body should be great for flat track carpet racing in the stock and 19T classes. Also guys are using it in mod down at Sandhills (large banked track).
old_fart_racing 11-03-2004, 01:32 PM erock1331,
Hopefully you can help me out, until the new intrepid R/T comes out I will be running the 2001 intrepid body #1222L in stock class, on a track very similar to the snowbird track.Would you recommend this body or another?
Thanks in advance.

I will be honest I do not race much flat track so I do not get to test much, but when I do I always run the HD Monte.
A buddy of mine from Michigan that runs for Protoform who runs alot of flat track in stock told me last week that his body of choice for stock is the Old Dodge, so yeah it definately works.
If you do decide to try the new Dodge when it comes out, the car will definately turn harder than with the old Dodge.
bluelineracer 11-03-2004, 05:38 PM old fart...
the old intrepid is a good stock body. you can always add a little rake to make it more aggressive. i ran back to back tests last year between the intrepid and the hd monte. went nearly identical times. the dodge did feel like the nose would wash out a bit if i clipped the infield plastic, where the monte would remain more stable.
will test the r/t this weekend in 19 turn.

TeamGoodwrench 11-08-2004, 09:35 AM UPDATE
Just got word from one of the distributors -- looks like it will be middle of the month before they have the new Dodge R/T bodies.
Jeff.
erock1331 11-08-2004, 11:53 AM Congrats to PROTOform drivers, Brian Ziegler (TQ - Mod) and Greg Honeycutt (Winner of Mod) at the ROAR Reg 3 race this past weekend !!
bluelineracer 11-08-2004, 01:21 PM ...and an outstanding debut in indiana of dale's latest work. tq and a win saturday in 19 turn at new castle.
smokefan 11-08-2004, 03:39 PM So are these bodies available now??
TeamGoodwrench 11-08-2004, 03:45 PM As far as I know -- NO.
I heard Horizon and Great Planes aren't scheduled to get them until the middle of the month.
The Protoform-sponsored guys have them -- and there were some shipped out west to get them qualified for the NORRCA nats I guess but that's it.
Our distributor got word today that they will be getting them middle of the month too.
jake86 11-08-2004, 05:22 PM I can't wait till you get them Jeff.

LARCGuy 11-09-2004, 05:31 AM If the Dodge RT is not readily available and most people can't get it, will it still be legal for the NORRCA Carpet Nats?
erock1331 11-09-2004, 09:15 AM Eric Anderson (Norrca Oval Director) said on page 2 of this thread that they will be legal for the Carpet Nats.
erock1331 11-09-2004, 09:32 AM Product Update:
The
#1220-21 2000 Monte (non-HD version)
#1221-21 2000 Taurus
#1222-21 2001 Dodge
Have all been discontinued.
There may be PROTOform 1221-21 Taurus bodies still in inventory at various
distributors around the country however regarding any new requests for this
body style, the PROTOform Taurus #1221-21 is only available to hobby shops
that order from ERI Distributing. (in NY) Phone number is: 845 268 5090
ERI has been granted an exclusive for sales (limited supply) of this part number only.
Currently the 2 bodies in the line-up are the:
1223-21 2002 High Downforce Monte Carlo and the new
1224-21 2004 Medium Downforce Dodge R/T
Thanks,
Eric
LARCGuy 11-10-2004, 06:08 AM "Eric Anderson (Norrca Oval Director) said on page 2 of this thread that they will be legal for the Carpet Nats."
I understood the post on page two. So the body will be legal for the 6 people running it.
frank p. 11-10-2004, 10:31 AM good point
erock1331 11-10-2004, 10:47 AM "Eric Anderson (Norrca Oval Director) said on page 2 of this thread that they will be legal for the Carpet Nats."

I can understand where you are coming from.
I checked the Norrca rulebook, here is what it has to say:
My comments are in Blue lettering.
PRODUCT LEGALITY
GE.1 PRODUCT USE: Paved Oval and Road Course bodies, all tires, all motors, all batteries, and all car kits will not be allowed at State, Divisional or National events unless the product has been commercially available to the general public 30 days prior to the event.
Right now I agree with you guys that the body is not in shops yet.
NORRCA will waive this rule if the product is made available at the event prior to the first round of qualifying and is available in such a quantity as to be available to the total number of entrants and a reasonable quantity to each.
I guess if Sandhills would get an ample supply of these bodies in by nats time the body would be okay to run.
NORRCA should be notified 30 days prior to an event as to the item to be introduced, and based on that item NORRCA will determine the amount of the product to be made available. . NORRCA reserves the right to wave this requirement, if requested, 30 days in advance, providing NORRCA has determined that the products will have an insignificant impact on the vehicles performance or that it is not a major technological breakthrough.
Perhaps EA did not see a new body as being big breakthrough and therefore approved it.
I will email EA and see if he can shed some light on the situation.
Or if he knows who has the new body in stock if any.
TeamGoodwrench 11-10-2004, 12:59 PM Thanks Eric -
We are still waiting -- as of yesterday, I don't know of any distributors that have the new Dodge R/T in stock.
Would be interested to hear of any that you find out actually DO have quantity in stock.... I'll be speed dialing them :-)
Jeff.
erock1331 11-10-2004, 02:03 PM Jeff,
I have an email into Dale and Jessica at Protoform seeing what the hold up is and one to EA regarding if they will be legal or not for the nats.
SMROCKET 11-10-2004, 03:08 PM Protoform said nothing about being a back order ..Some TEAM guys have gotten shipments this week..Hopefully mine is on the porch when I get home....
ROCKET
erock1331 11-10-2004, 04:54 PM Per PROTOform:
"When this body was released we had them in stock, unfortunately we have shipped all that were available and they are now on backorder. However, they should be available by the end of the week."
TeamGoodwrench 11-10-2004, 05:47 PM Per PROTOform:
"When this body was released we had them in stock, unfortunately we have shipped all that were available and they are now on backorder. However, they should be available by the end of the week."
So I wonder where were they shipped ???
I know of 3 distributors that had them ordered and didn't get any.
Carpet Assasin 11-10-2004, 06:31 PM It's going to be the body of choice, so why not make 1000 of them and be done with it??? Im tired of waiting for one, TEAM driver or not! The paying customer should beable to get one soon after it has been tested and proven.
EAMotorsports 11-10-2004, 08:07 PM Guys,
The bodies were shipped to distributors that had them on order last month. They are working on a new batch for the other distributors that beat around the bush and didnt have them on order.
Also the Rule states "Comercially available" not "readily available" so the first batch put out to distributors made the bodies legal.

Dale Epp 11-10-2004, 09:47 PM I just wanted to bring you uptodate on the avalability of the new Dodge R/T body. I haven't been able to check out HobbyTalk much lately because I've been away for the better part of 3 weeks. After I left Chicago(RCHTA show) I went to Florida for 8 days for the IFMAR Electric On-Road Worlds, then went to California(Proline) & Las Vegas for the SEMA show(for inpiration) Its definitely time to get back in the shop and make some more dust.
OK regarding the Dodge: we recieved the licensing approval on Oct 15th while we were all at the RCHTA hobby show. The following tuesday we sent out the news letter/product updates to all our distributors. Orders for the body did come in almost immediately, but as has become the norm in the last few years, the orders were kinda small. The major distributors have become a little "skittish" about stocking up too heavily on oval products in the last few years. Its not quite like it was in the days of Lk Whippoorwill, Megatrack and King RC Spdwy.
On Oct 29th bodies began to be shipped out. Great Planes, Horizon CA & IL, Competition Products and ERI have all had Dodge body orders sent to them. Horizon IL has sold out and re-ordered. That order will leave tomorrow. The fact that everything is shipped from the "left coast" adds a week to normal eastern-usa shipping schedules. A total of 220 Dodge bodies have been ordered and shipped. Unfortunately in a country the size of the USA, it takes a while before the "pipeline" gets the products to some of the racers that are eagerly awaiting it. It's quite ofter the second or third orders that start to fill the demand. I wish it was different, but unfortunately this has been my experience.
If someone will forward me the telephone number for Sandhills Speedway I will get in touch with them tomorrow. I will also be talking to Kurt at MSA Dist. tomorrow in hopes of bringing him up to speed on the demand for Dodge's in his part of the country.
I hope this information is helpful. I'm sincerely greatful to those of you who support Protoform by using our products. I look forward to seeing 'yall race at the Snowbirds. (southern talk, eh)

Mike Russell at Sandhills contacted Jessica at Proline today and they are having them dropshipped early next week.

SMROCKET 11-11-2004, 12:45 PM Great to have you on here Dale, The new body seems to trun very well and still have alot of straight away speed and very stable....We willl see next week at Sandhills,,,,
Can you give us some more info on the rest of your ideas for Protoform ....
ROCKET
Curious why the price hike? $24 seems a bit more than usual.
SMROCKET 11-15-2004, 03:24 PM I thought that Bodies were always 22-24 dollars ....
Looking forward to running this body on Flat tracks also .....Looks like we have more than enough downforce withthe frontend and the Protoform bodies have more than enough rear bite .....Looks like a winner Dale .....The guys at the track love the line and detail Protoform is known for ...
SRM
Not trying to be smug rocket, but Murdock's and the LHS has proto HDMC's for $17.50 - $18.Just can't get the Dodge yet,but I saw them advertised for $24 elsewhere and became curious.
Carpet Assasin 11-15-2004, 10:26 PM Rocket,
I ran the new R/T body Saturday night in mod and WOW, super nice body. I could put the car anywhere on the track and still make the corner rather well. It has the best downforce in the front and rear of any body I have run. It helped me to a win Saturday night, and hopefully some track records in the future!
Another great product from Protoform!!! Definetly the body of choice!!!!!!
Mario.....
frank p. 11-16-2004, 06:21 AM yeah now just raise it up a little! lol

erock1331 11-16-2004, 08:53 AM yeah now just raise it up a little! lol

I knew that was coming, NICE one Frankie !!
The body did look good on Mario's car, car looked real stable all the way around the rug.
Now he needs to just get it up to 4 1/4", hehe
Carpet Assasin 11-16-2004, 08:53 PM I think Walts jig was alittle SALTY! It was a 1/4 inch off! :p
I guess it was a little SLAMMED? But no track records to speak of, yet! But I will raise it for the next week,
See ya guys on Dec, 4th
old_fart_racing 11-21-2004, 06:55 PM It's been awhile since any postings, are there any updates on the availability of the Dodge R/T body??
I got one at our local hobby store and it's terrific, ran it for the 1st time today and ran my fastest by over a lap. Good job Protoform.

Tommygun43 11-23-2004, 03:36 PM I was hoping to run my new Dodge Intrepid body this weekend but I thinkI have a bad one . When I take a straight edge across the hood, there is a gap between the driver side fender and center of the hood. The passenger side is completely flat. Could someone check theres? Maybe I'm missing something.
The hobby shop has 1 other one and it's the same way. When I tried to mount it to the car it was all out of wack.
I really like Protoform bodies. I wish they still made the Pontiac though.
TG
THE BAT 11-23-2004, 04:37 PM TG...Mine wasn't molded correctly either.I ended up running it anyway with the left side front body post shorter then the right side.It ran fine though in 4cell stock. If it was any other class i probably wouldn't have used it. MZ
Nice looking body though
