I'm looking for a good all region DVD player. Does Best Buy carry any?
FYE I think carries Coby brand, But the manager says those aren't very
good. Any suggestions?

There is one by Apex that you can set the region yourself.
Goes from 0 to 9 and 0 is the any region code. Don't know
what model number it is though.

JAMES , ONCE YOU SET IT, CAN YOU CHANGE IT BACK? Anyone know which
model it is? What region is PAL?

From what I remember it's a mechanical changing. You set it
inside somewhere. And you can change it back and forth.
Don't know if it plays PAL though.

Will see if I can find the old info.

Found the following info:
-------------------------------
I found two of the new region/code free APEX AD-600A DVD players and am putting one up for auction (the other is mine, baby!).
They were the last ones at Circuit City and apparently the last ones in the state. The one I am selling is unopened and will stay that way.

Not only can this deck play both PAL & NTSC discs, it has a hidden menu (called the "Loophole Menu!") that disables Macrovision and can either bypass regional encoding, or change the region to #'s 1-9, since some players have "smart" encoding that will detect *no region* players.

Oh! It will also play CD-R discs, MP3's and has Karaoke! This is one impressive all around unit.

I tested my unit ALL DAY and it works flawlessly (problem discs like The MATRIX were perfect). As a matter of fact, it handles layer changes and branching better than any DVD player I have seen! The units all come with the standard 90-day/12 month warranty.

It cost me $170.00 with tax and I have the bidding starting at $179.00. The extra $9.00 is to cover my eBay fees if only one person bids.

If that's all I get, I'll be satisfied. I am doing this since so many Circuit Cities are completely sold out and the newer modals (manufacture date after 0999) do not have the hidden menu! This is one hard to find unit and now I know why. This is a great 1st, 2nd or any player.

Here is the link for my auction. Good luck!:

P.S. If the scans do not load, please just e-mail me as my AT&T server is having some problems from time to time.

Hi all,

I said I would post this. If you don't have any idea what this is about, just skip this message. If you're thinking about buying the Apex DVD player from, say, ebay, and you're wondering how hard the region fix is, or if you have to get it done in the hardware, etc., I'll let you know now.

The fix is done by the remote, only. Just have the player on, and do the

following:

1. Press "Setup"

2. Select "Preferences"

3. Press "Step"

4. Press the back chapter button

5. Press the forward chapter button

This will bring up the secrets menu. You can disable macrovision, disable region checking, and change the output to PAL/NTSC/or either.

I hope this helps. BTW, I haven't checked CC's new players, but they have two new Apex's. I guess you can get onto www.deja.com (http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/www.deja.com) and search for Apex player.

And here is an FAQ for the fix:

--------------------------------------------------
Oh, and I was incorrect. You make the changes with the remote.

BTW, those are really old eBay items. Long gone.

This was the DVD player that a lot of people were buying to make
copies, er... I mean back ups of thier DVDs. LOL!

You would have to ask around if it works on any other APEX
models.

JAMES , ONCE YOU SET IT, CAN YOU CHANGE IT BACK? Anyone know which

Main PAL DVD regions are
Region 2: UK and Europe
Region 4: Australia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands.

But have a look at: http://www.psreporter.com/pal_system_tv_standard.html
for a complete list of PAL countries..
(Also SECAM countries can be treated as PAL as there is no difference in the DVDs)

Do you need a special tv monitor to use with a region free dvd player?

JamesDFarrow

I don't think so. The region thing is more or less how it reads the disc.
So the TV monitor shouldn't matter.

Well you can't go wrong for $40.00. And it is always good to have an extra DVD player.
