Hi,
I fairly new to the expensive, "big boy":D RC racing (I've grown up playing with TYCO and NIKKO), but I was thinking about getting back into the hobby. I've had an electric street racer for a few years, and now my brother and I are thinking of maybe buying some offroading trucks(most likely the monster trucks that we could race around the back yard in our little dirt area). I just wanted to get your opinions on which brand/type to buy. I'm also leaning towards gas powered? Which is better gas or electric? I already have a charger.

And lastly, I don't want to shell out that much cash, so what would be the best bang for my buck? I don't think I'll have time to assemble it, so which trucks come assembled?

Sorry for the long read.
Thanks for any help, I appreciate it!

in my opionion if u go eletric go with a traxxas emaxx for monster or associated t4 in stadium, if u go gas id suggest the Hpi savage, traxxas tmaxx, associated mgt, or the ofna dominator u can get all of those in a rtr, in 1/8 scale if u wanna go that way i suggest the violator i just got one and they are sweet and fast as heck, and then is u go gas stadium then i suggest the associated rc10gt

That is just my 0.02

It's all in what you want,If you want nitro buy nitro ect.You will find out what has to be doen if you buy eather gas or eletric. They both have there expensive hop ups and they both need upkeep.I would look into what you llike and do some reserch on it.You'll be suprized on what you find.

If your new why do you have more posts than me???I'm new to the RC board. I hang out at the diecast board.
Thanks for the help guys..keep it comin'!

And on the topic of what I like, I've had experience with electric street cars, so I know that charging can be a pain sometimes....and mine doesn't have long run time(I need a new battery). But as far as power and just pure fun, is gas or electric the way to go?

what u should do is go to the local hobbyshop and see what they carry in the way of parts

If you want a good quality truck that you can bash with you should definately go with a EMAXX. The only thing is that the price is big. Maybe a Traxxas Stampede?

Search around

What are some of the new model Nitro Monster trucks that aren't insanely expensive and run well? Just curious.

if you are looking to get something a little cheaper than the t-maxx i'd suggest the sportmaxx. the difference between the two trucks is that the t-maxx is 4wd and 2spd while the sport maxx is rwd and has a single spd. you could pick up a sportmaxx up for under 300

David Washburn
09-02-2004, 10:52 PM
yea but the reason u the tmaxx is good is because it is 4wd and has a two speed tranny y would u downgrade  :jest:

David Washburn

with the sportmaxx u lose speed and traction

What about this one. The Traxxas Stampede: $175 http://h1070383.hobbyshopnow.com/products/description.asp?prod=TRA3606

Is this a good truck for the money? Ahh, but it's electric...hmmm.

Prolly the best RTR truck that is out there in a MT is the Traxxas Revo for about $480 you get a truck with a on board NIMH pack and charger included, two steering servos so there wont be any servo upgrades needed which with any RTR kit is allways a common problem, so these upgrades you wont have to worry about, it comes with standard and long travel suspension parts plus if you have ever had to deal with any of these companies customer service department traxxas is second to none, they really stand behind thier products. since you allready have a electric street racer you prolly have chargers and 7.2 battery packs for the ez-start, so all you will need is a gallon of fuel and 8 AA's and a temp gauge which is highly recomended for engine tuning and you will be good to go!

What are you thinking david we have had this talk before T-4 RTR is the best value. Shure it is a hundred dollars more than the Traxas but you get a truck that is basically race ready Indoors or Outdoors. Where do they race MT's indoors? Why steer the new guys to a truck that just cannot compete or there is not a class for. Then he will have to spend lots more money to buy an associated or losi later. They are very durable and if you decide to race you have a truck you can win with no problem. T-4 RTR then mabe upgrade to a SS5800 brushless motor system to go almost as fast as gas with almost no maintenence and you can run it indoors.Stadium truck is the largest class in the offroad world. Is gas powered really that much more hassle than electric?

Yes,Maintenence, oily, and expensive. You will spend most of your time working on it and very little driving. You have to constantly tune the carberator.Oil gets all over every thing, very dirty. I sold all my gas stuff and got a brushless. Thats the best thing I ever did. I havent changed a motor all summer and I probably got at least 40-50 runs on it with no problems. As far as I am concerned it is just as fast as gas and has very smooth power.
