O.K. The 1st season set is out. And supposedly the quality is a lot better
than the 2-episode discs previously released. So am thinking about it.

Now Amazon had the following posted:
--------------------------------------------------------
Here are the official release dates of the original Star Trek season sets:
- Season 1 on 8/31
- Season 2 on 11/2
- Season 3 on 12/7
- The Complete Series on 12/7
-------------------------------------------------------
Notice the last item. Does anyone know if this will be the 3 season
box sets just packaged together or is there going to be a "new" all
in one box with all the discs inside?

Thanks,

James :)

Well, except for the color. Season 2 is a blue box so that's better. LOL!

But wouldn't you be ticked if the "complete series" came in a box shaped
like a shuttlecraft? Or a captain's chair? Or?

If it is a one package deal you would think they might think of some marketing
gimmick to make all those people who bought the separate sets really want the new packaging.

I've got a feeling it's just a bad use of language. Because when the third season is released, the complete series will be available at that point. I haven't seen anything about a full three season set. Besides, who could afford it?

I saw it advertised at Amazon for 84.95 at this site:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002I831S/002-8755082-8399246?v=glance&s=dvd

There may very well be a combined boxed set for all three seasons but who knows what other extras Paramount may decide to screw us over for. Take a look at this site and look at the packaging they are giving to the Japanese. You'll have to scroll down a bit to see it but it's there.

Don't they off er the complete TNG for $500-600? A lot cheaper than the individual season sets. If I didn't already have all the single discs I'd skip the seasons sets and wait for the complete series set.

I was at Best Buy on Tuesday and saw it. I didn't know the release date, so I was suprised to see it.

While totally offended by what Paramount is asking for any season of any Trek I did decide long ago that I would get the TOS DVD's. (hey only have to shell out for three seasons to get the whole series vs. 7 seasons for any of the other shows).

The picture quality so far appears to be quite nice. Almost to good when you can see paint mistakes on the wall flats.

I don't care for the packaging. The funky box is goofy, ......hmmmm....is it funky, or is it goofy?............
'Allow myself to intro..duce,.......myself' :freak:

And the method of holding the DVD's inside is not well thought out.

It is great having all episodes complete and crisp as they are.
Now I can throw out plenty of VHS tapes that had commercial breaks thrown in at completely inappropiate places.

I am disappointed though that 'The Cage' was not part of this set.
I don't know if it will appear in a following set, but it seemed appropiate to have it in the first season possibly as part of the supplimental material.

Just got mine at Costco for $114 CDN.

I really like the quality of the picture, but I agree, the packaging is goofy. Just unwrapping it was a chore. How many layers of plastic is there? Nice that they threw in the $35 discount at Master Replicas. Now only if I could find the $200 to spend there to use the discount.

All in all, I like this purchase and I look forward to getting the other two seasons.

Cheers,
Ray

Just picked up mine at Target for $99.99 on the way to my second job. Probably not the best price, but I try to avoid Walmart if at all possible(don't like to reward their low employment, your-on-your-own "efficiency model" of doing business), and they were only $4 off Walmart's price anyway.

I guess that is to ensure that we buy the 3rd season! :jest:

Does anyone who purchased the new set have any of the old season 1 DVDs to compare picture quality? I'm curious if it is really much of an improvement. Also, what are the extras like?

I have all the 2-episode DVDs and don't think I'll be getting these. Fortunately a friend just ordered the set from Amazon, so, eventually I can check them out too.

Try using this link to translate it. Copy and paste the text and select

The quality of the episodes looks exactly the same as the original DVD releases. The tape masters still carry the early first season open sequence incorrectly into the mid-later season episodes, when originally only the first few episodes had that open. Just like they did on the original releases - the same mistake.

I comparing the two releases, I actually prefer the original DVD's. The new animated menus are somewhat annoying, and not very well produced. Although there are now four titles per disc, there is still no "play all" feature, which was so pleasant on the Babylon 5 DVD sets.

The text commentaries are somewhat interesting only if you know absolutely nothing about the original series, and are quick on the "pause" button on the remote control. The overlays are black text on gold at about half opacity - making them difficult to read clearly.

Of the "extras" included - the ones I found the most interesting were the "Red Shirt Diaries" often humorous anecdotes by cast and crew. The Shatner horse piece I found to be very interesting and well produced, but I found it to be out of place on this release. If fact, it looks as if it was to have been originally included on the Generations DVD, as all film footage included in the segment is from that production. In fact, the "Tribute to Matt Jefferies" piece that is listed on the Generations release info, should have more rightly been included on one of the original series boxed sets.

Strangely enough, the segment that I enjoyed the most, other than the "Red Shirt" segments, was the "Love in the 23rd Century" piece. On the opposite end, the trivia segment was just stupid, and a waste of valuable disc space.

It should also be noted that the "preview trailers" for the episodes are exactly what was included on the original DVD's - and, btw, are the syndicated trailers, not the original broadcast trailers, which had the "Next week on Star Trek" voiceovers by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy when shown on the network.

It's too bad they didn't include any of the original NBC network promos - they would have been fun, as would have the original "bumpers" with the still of the Enterprise and the fanfare, which followed the end of every act before the commercials. I doubt if anyone who wasn't an adult back then would even remember having seen those either of those. Ditto original cast TV interviews of the time. Well, maybe there's still a chance on one of the other season releases.

I picked up for $99 temporary sale price at SunCoast (Sam Goody) and I'm so glad I did it. I'd never owned any VHS (let alone discs) or had any access to broadcast reruns since the 70s.

I thought my TOS jones was gone, but it was only dormant. Having watched the reruns religiously in the early to mid-70s, and also at that time having read and re-read all the Blish adaptations and other accompanying TOS books (Making Of and the Gerrold books) and built the bridge model, not to mention "playing" TOS as little kids in the 60s with my brother and his best-friend Monte in the hills of Woodland Hills CA (I had my choice of Chekov, Scotty, McCoy or Sulu - they always got to be Kirk and Spock and alternated - plus we built tricorders, communicators and phasers out of Legos) - that is to ramblingly say, having said that........THIS IS AWESOME! The colors, lighting and camera angles alone are worth savoring - and I compare to TNG and notice the HUGE visual difference.

I was hoping the rare Lois Nettleton episode :) would be included, but no dice - maybe one of the later sets. Again I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS SET THANK YOU GOD FOR KEEPING MY ENTHUSIASM ALIVE..................
