"Just a moment... just a moment..."

The Arclight Cinema at Hollywood & Vine is screening Kubrick's classic tonight at 8PM. They ran this very print there about a year ago, and it was so crisp you could see the smudges on the clear plexi holding Dr. Floyd's pen aloft. If you live in the area, and have never seen "2001" on the big screen (in which case you haven't really seen it), here's your chance. Who knows, maybe you'll sit next to James Cameron or Tom Hanks, a couple of "2001" junkies who have a history of showing up at these things.

Man, that is tempting...I think I've seen 2001 every time it's played at the Egyptian. I don't know if I'd recommend seeing it at the Cinerama Dome though. The curved screen doesn't quite work...I think they run the revivals on the other screens now though...

It's not being shown at the Dome, but in one of the theaters adjacent to the Arclight.

I know what you mean about the curved screen. Depending on where you sit, and on how the film is shot, it can be a problem.

However... seeing a fresh 70MM Cinerama print of "2001" in the Cinerama Dome... the very theater where the film had its west coast premier... well, it's one of the most memorable film going experiences of my life.

I saw 2001 in Cinarama in San Francisco as a kid. Naturally, as a kid I was a bit baffled by the whole thing. But I do remember the awesome theater, and I'm near positive the movie stayed in that theater for months. I just can't recall the name of the theater. It's gone now...

I have seen 2001 on the big screen several times, but nothing compares to seeing the restored 70mm print. I was lucky enough to catch the very last screening in Manhattan back when they re-released it. I saw the very smudges you mentioned for the first time -- along with a host of other details that I had missed before. The clarity of the print and the new digital soundtrack were breathtaking.

I know it's too late now to see the screening at the Arclight, but I want to encourage anyone who hears of a screening they can get to in the future to go see it! This masterpiece can only be truly appreciated when seen in this way.

I saw a 70mm print here in the Twin Cities a while back. One thing I could have sworn I saw but wasn't able to verify on my DVD copy. When they are approaching the monolith on the moon, I'm pretty sure I saw a bearded man reflected in one of the helmets. Kubrick himself?

It's gone now...I saw it in Cinerama in New York City at the age of 11. I was baffled by it too but mezmerised. Even at my young age, I knew that I was seeing a movie that was singular and groundbreaking. I remember walking out into the lobby during intermission and my father asking me what I thought of it and I was just sort of stunned and speechless. That experience has been a strong influence on the way that I think of movies to this day.

I saw the 70mm a few Christmas seasons ago in NY, I was amazed the theater was almost empty. Sure makes the DVD (even the improved one) look shabby in comparison.

Good eye! In the movie's most legendary gaffe, director Kubrick is fleetingly reflected in the astronaut's visor. This does not show up on the DVD, but is quite visible in thre 70MM print.

Considering that he also briefly appears reflected in a mirror in EYES WIDE SHUT, you have to wonder if Kubrick did this deliberately.

Is this different from the 70mm print circulating round the US in 2001 and 2002?

Cuz folks I talked with who saw that in Seattle were VERY disappointed, especially compared with the 35mm that was out in 2002. I saw the 35mm print in Oregon and couldn't believe how incredible it looked -- and I've seen 2001 20 times in theaters between 68 and 2002, and probably at least another 100 times on laserdisk and DVD (not just for fun, for research as well.)

I'd say the color saturation on the recent 35 print was more intense than on any version I'd seen since I was 7 years old (except for that one shot in the white room at the end where everything went pink, which I guess was spliced in from another version.)
