View Full Version : Starsky & Hutch the way it should have been
ltfalcon 08-11-2004, 10:58 AM Hey everyone,
I couldn’t resist this modification after watching Starsky and Hutch the movie.
I pulled my JL Torino out to take a look at it and needless to say I was disappointed to see it in a low rider mode with no slot mags. I looked high and low for the correct slot mags, they were very elusive. Then I came across a slot car web site that I had purchased from before. There they were the Slot Mags I needed to complete the project. You may want to add them to your list of part suppliers for vintage style custom wheels and tires. Road Race Replicas (ho-slotcars.com). These do require large diameter axles like slot cars use.

midtown 08-11-2004, 11:13 AM Excellent job! Correct me if I'm wrong but I think HW's might have a slot mag?
zeb41 08-11-2004, 11:25 AM Wow! What a difference! That looks right now.

midtown 08-11-2004, 11:33 AM Rob, I was thinking more from the Black Box cars. Possibly from a gasser?

Yup, Classical Gassers - Henry J and Austin coupe have them... good memory.
Don't have the camera today, so no pics... sorry
CJTORINO 08-11-2004, 11:44 AM Nice Job on that Torino, 'Itfalcon.' Looks alot more correct now.
ltfalcon 08-11-2004, 11:44 AM Yes,
You guys are correct, but there not the correct looking slot mags.
The slots in the others are either to small or to large.
Thanks!!
jage1966 08-11-2004, 12:46 PM I'm a big advocate of correct wheels on TV and movie cars. It makes a world of difference. That's why I love Charawheels' version of the Back to the Future Delorean, Speed Racer's Mach 5 and K.I.T.T. The wheels are awesome.
Nice job Itfalcon. I may try doing the same thing. Except, I may add a little police light on the top. Have you thought of doing that?

Dave_anto364 08-11-2004, 12:58 PM Nice job - I believe that the original car had Cragers. Now what you need is to make Hutch's car. I believe it was a mustrd or light brown 74 LTD. You can make two verisions of it - the broken down version like they had in most of the shows or the pimped out version that I believe Huggy Bear redid in one episode. Did I watch this show too much????????????
SiNutt 08-11-2004, 01:22 PM Nice job - I believe that the original car had Cragers.
The original car definitely had "slots" To the best of my knowledge Cragar never made a slotted aluminum mag.
robmcin 08-11-2004, 01:31 PM Definately slots...

jnkfleet 08-11-2004, 08:37 PM Nice Work!..Dave.
Those wheels you put on look much better than the original (Cragars) that JL did the car with.
The "real McCoys", on the showcar... Are an American Racing slotted Magnesium(polished for the camera), and can be found on the HotWheels 100%(GM Performance Parts series) '58 Corvette.
At least the closest wheel I've seen in 1/64 scale.

dba-one 08-11-2004, 08:51 PM Sweet! That is very good work. What trick do you use to get the base back on? I've tried wheel/axle swaps but the base never like to stick. I use a Dremel to drill out the "fastener" to get it apart. Depending on how far you go, it won't stick on it own again. I tried sod. iron, Crazy Glue but no luck.
JLWahl 08-12-2004, 12:59 AM The car is definitely an improvement, but the rims are still incorrect.

Specifically, this pic:

Now, compare that to this pic (courtesy of Wyatt's site):

The rims are identical. Imagine how nice the Striped Tomato would look with those rims.
dipstick 08-12-2004, 08:37 AM FALCON - Drop me a line - I have a few of these sitting around - would love to have you convert one!! Maybe do a second HOW-To for the site???

ltfalcon 08-12-2004, 10:04 AM First, Thanks for all the positve feed back!!!!
dba-one,
I use a two part 5 minute epoxy to glue the cars back together. It works great for me.
JLWahl,
The new slots JL has out look like the old steel slots from back in the day. Steel slot mags were flat in the area where the slots are at. The Aluminum or Mag. slots had the slots cut into a radius section or dished section of the rim.
roadrner 08-12-2004, 10:07 AM Talk about changing the looks! Great job, gonna have to rip mine out of the package now. rr
RobDog 08-12-2004, 11:39 AM Looking good!
you might try a little satin,or semi gloss clear on the chrome rims to knock down the shine

I have no idea what you just said.
To me, the rims in my above post are identical. I guarantee you a JL Striped Tomato with those rims would be spot-on.
(And BTW, I wasn't knocking your work. It's excellent. I was just making an observation.)
jage1966 08-14-2004, 12:26 PM Here's my first attempt with JL slot mags. I went with the flat grey instead of chrome, but I don't think I like it as much. What do you think?

The chrome is probably a more accurate choice, but that is absolutely freakin' beautiful!
Great job, Joe!
Kenny Kaos 08-14-2004, 02:45 PM those look good... ;) Seeing the movie and this thread, reminds me of the one I had in 86... oh I wish I still had that bad boy...
jage1966 08-15-2004, 10:29 PM Well, this is it, my final attempt:

FANTASTIC!

JLWahl 08-20-2004, 10:29 PM Hey Joe, I have an idea for your next project!
Why not replace the rims on the BTTF Delorean with the rims from the Die Another Day Aston Martin Vanquish? They're not exactly right, but they're close!
