View Full Version : another annoying error in file VMM(01) doctorslotcar 07-26-2004, 07:46 PM we ran spy bot & ad-aware which has helped our puter run longer before it shuts down.any ideas error message is VMM(01)+0000c175 error OE:0028:c000d17f please help us. ramsfanuk 08-31-2004, 09:50 AM Saw your problem you dont say what os u are using. go to a search engine if you can and type in VMM Errors in windows. Try this site for starters http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/ervmm.htm. Your error concerns virtual memory manager. Also u dont say how old your computer is. Feel free to mail me any time for a bit more advice. Steve244 08-31-2004, 10:20 AM Hiya ramsfanuk. Good advice. To add to this: I'm guessing doctorslotcar, you're running win98 or earlier. There are a lot of memory issues, most are caused by 3rd party software (not Microsoft, not the computer manufacturer) and win98 doesn't deal with it well. I'd probably try formatting the HD and reloading just the OS and programs you really use. But do it over time so if the culprit is one of these you can determine which more easily. If the machine is worth keeping it might be worth upgrading to winxp. You could try tweaking memory settings, try disabling windows memory management and setting a fixed amount of virtual memory, but this work around is just masking the real problem of some poorly written piece of software and may end up making things worse. Learn about starting the PC in "safe mode" (http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/usingwindows/maintaining/tips/advanced/SafemodeBoot.asp) (usually depressing PF8 while booting and following the menu). Messing with the memory management may require this if the PC stops working. I don't have a win98 machine but this page from MS has some advice.
