rockin_bob13 07-24-2004, 01:36 PM Allright. For the racers out there that enjoy the look and feel of open wheel oval racing, the Indy/F1 car that I've been running for the past 9 months is now in production.rcindycars.com is now marketing the chassis that I had comissioned. A friend of mine with big time chassis design experience and with some input from genuine open wheel oval engineers put this car to a cad design. I had some made and have been tweaking on it for some time.
A word from the website.
GRX - Oval Chassis
This car is designed for oval racing only. It is made to turn left very well. The chassis has a unique front end geometry where the right front tire is longer than the left front. This is called "lead in". The design allows the car to scrub less speed through the turns. Faster through the turns is faster on the straights. The car is also designed with the track of the car to be narrower on the left front than the right front to give the car more left side weight. More left side weight should allow the car to corner faster.
Other improvements are a one piece chassis design to allow more ride height adjustability from Velodrome big tire settings to small diameter foam carpet tire settings. The top plate has space allotted to allow mounting the rear wing to the chassis. This design allows the wing to make downforce on the main chassis.
The battery slots are cut to allow four cells in a row for those who like 4-cell stock, 4-cell 19turn, or 4-cell mod classes to enjoy the open wheel racing experience. There are four slots also cut on the right side to allow battery placement 3X3 or 4X2 for the 6-cell classes.
Like the other RCIndycar designs, the car is made to use all the hop-ups which fit the Associated style pan cars for easy parts availability and wide tuning ranges.
Here are some features of the GRX - 4 Cell Oval Chassis:
3mm Woven Graphite, since piece chassis design
Unique front end geometry, left side is moved in to move more weight to the left side of the car allowing it to turn left better.
4x4 Battery slots allowing you to run 4 cells all on the left side. 6 cells either 3x3 or 4x2 to distribute the weight
Rear wing mounts to the rear chassis brace on the chassis.
Wheel base adjustable from 10 1/4" to 10 15/16"
Accommodates standard Associated dynamic front end and rear end.
Very fast on an oval track.
We will have the pictures of the GRX - 4 Cell Car up soon!
My son and I have set new records at the Velo with this car. The 4 top qualifiers at the last Velo race were with this car. And on carpet, never running 4-cell mod before, I made 2nd TQ at the Classic Open out of 17 entries. The car is beautiful! :D

latemodel100 07-25-2004, 02:54 PM Oh yeah,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
OBROCTO 07-25-2004, 06:32 PM Very nice
kato71 07-25-2004, 07:56 PM Thanks Bob for starting the official thread for the rcindycar.com, for those that haven't seen it:
http://www.rcindycars.com
In addition to GRX car we also have several other chassis that you can check out, although the the GRX is the only chassis that we have that is designed with Oval only in mind and is setup to turn left and turn left quickly!
Thanks,
Tim Toepp
RC Indy Cars
nickcacc 07-25-2004, 08:03 PM I can vouch for the speed of the GRX chassis. I qualified 4th at the Velo race, finished 3rd behind 2 other GRX's. First time on the track with the car and I was in the hunt immediately thanks to the setup that Bob gave me. He knows the car very well and has put a lot of r&d into it. Also, with Brad Hayes' hand in it, it has to be good.
kato71 08-09-2004, 01:26 AM RC Indy Car is now 1 year old and we are having a SALE to celebrate this great event! :hat:
Also I have put up the pictures of the chassis so that you can see what all of the new models look like. For both our GRX Oval and the new Cosworth2, T1 and Spitfire Chassis, we have a chassis for every track that you run depending if it's a Indy Oval or a F1 Road Course.
Thanks to all that have made the first year successful!
CBear3 08-09-2004, 12:59 PM Hmm, what would you guys suggest for bodies? Any one better than the other? Thinking about toying around with this, as I've got more Associated based pan cars than I could possibly use and for 75 bucks it looks like a fun time.
blueracer55 08-09-2004, 02:17 PM we talked saturday bob. glad to see your cars doing well. i will see ya at the nats. i hope my 6-cell car gets done in time.......
rockin_bob13 08-09-2004, 07:40 PM The 2-#8 holes in the fit the Tamiya and HPI front wings. When you buy a Tamiya body, it comes wit the wing. We're velo racing now and the Tamiya Sauber C12 ,( I get 'em at Tower) is a real smooth body/ low nose. Pretty much any Tamiya body you get, Ferrari high nose/low nose, McLaren, Benneton, Champ cars, they all fit. Bigger front wings have more downforce for small tracks/tight turns, there's more nylon so they're heavier too,(more steering). At the Velo my boy uses the Sauber, and make I a little wing from ABS for it. The stock Sauber wing is very good for high speed with medium downforce/weight. I found an old Hot Bodies Ferrari '93 that I'm using right now. My boy and I ran the car on carpet all last winter on a real small track with very good performance. It kind of looks like a Dallara too!(Sauber)
Mcallister has some real cool Indy/F1 bodies and look at the Hot Bodies Online cars also. The Duratrax Indy Delphi has nice lines, but it's REALLY HEAVY!.
Cars look real cool, open wheel and all, and anything you can bolt on a Associated car (hop-ups) you can bolt on this.
For a rear wing, Monti showed me the Kimbrough molded Lexan wing is what we use. Looks real nice.
If you go to the pdxracing.net site, you'll see the rules we use. But run 'em any way you like too.
kato71 08-11-2004, 08:09 PM McAllister is coming out with a new IRL body, possibly in August or September. Dahms also has several different types of bodies that can be used. As Bob said, we pretty much use the Kimbrough wing since it is a solid piece and has less flapping then the nylon rear wings. You can also cut those wings for less downforce. The Sauber body is a good starting body as it comes with the front nylon wing which is key. Some of the guys have tried the delphi wing, but usually after one unfortunate hit it is pretty toast. You will also need some wing stand-offs and some .78 wire for the rear wing.
kevjoh 08-27-2004, 11:43 PM I just recieved my T1 chassis a few days ago and it's awesome!
I put all my Assoc. L4 parts on it and every thing fit perfect.
I will get it on the track hopefully in a couple days after I get my
body and wings on.
Thanks Tim at Indycar R/C
Kevin
kato71 08-29-2004, 01:21 AM Kevin,
You are welcome, glad that you are satisfied with the car. Let me know if there is anything else and now that you have the car we hope to see you at some of the Velodrome next year!
I'm hoping to make it to Cincy for some of the on-road races as well, as long as I get prior approval from the boss.
Thanks,
Tim
RC Indycars
kato71 09-02-2004, 05:34 PM RC Indy Cars took 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the 2004 Velodrome Nationals! It was a sweep for the GRX chassis!
Out of the Top 7, there were 6 RC Indy Cars!
(somehow a Woods Brothers car that was recovered from a RC Pit Box grave, cleaned up and brought back to life just in time to take 4th.)
Bandit Racing 09-20-2004, 09:07 PM Where do you get the wings for these cars and how is the servo mounted in the car, also how is the body mounted on the chassis and how does the body fit over the rear shocks, any pics or advice would be helpful, thanks.
oldguy 09-20-2004, 09:46 PM Another Woods Indy 500 car was spotted at the big Akron oval race this past weekend and it seemed to run pretty well. The racing history of this model began at the Indy Velodrome in 1995 when Mike Woods Sr. and his son debuted the car. Seeing Indy cars on an RC track is way "cool", and I for one am really glad to see them on the track again. Oldguy
rockin_bob13 09-21-2004, 12:57 PM We use the Kimbrough molded lexan wing. The servo gets its ears cut off, stood on end and take some Assoc. plastic servo mounts and shim and Shoe Goo that servo in there. Real high tech, huh? With a Tamiya/HPI front wing, there is a body post mount on the front wing and a pre-drilled hole in Tamiya bodies that fit that mount. Normal body posts are mounted to the chassis in front of what would be the front nerf bar screw hole. Holes are pre drilled for nerf bars (2 supplied) and body post mounts. Most Tamiya bodies will fit over the side shocks. You may have to be ceative and ingenious to get the fit made right and not have the body too high to clear the side shocks. Some pics at the rcindycars.com site.
kato71 09-21-2004, 11:07 PM Bandit Racing,
In addition to what Rockin_Bob said, you can also take two of the Traxxas Part #4919 which allow you more real-estate to secure the servo. Bodies can be used from McAllister, Dahm's, Tamiya, HPI, Delphi, etc and depending on the body so do hide the rear shock assembly. Now not all of the chassis come with a Nerf Bar assembly as Rockin_Bob said. The Thunderbolt, T1 and Cosworth2 all can use a standard AE nerf bar, the GRX and Spitfire come with graphite nerf bars. Check out some of the pictures on the Website and I always try and put more up as I get them.
Oldguy - They are not only cool seeing them run, they are cool to drive!
Bandit Racing 09-22-2004, 03:46 PM The McAllister IRL bodies come with a rear wing, are these good enough to race with or do I need the Kimbrough wing? Do you guys run the rear pod in the straight up position or in the offset position and do you run the wide or narrow rear capped tires? Thank you for your time.
rockin_bob13 09-22-2004, 04:21 PM From what I've seen of that body/wing, the photo shows the wing mounted to the body. We made an area on the chassis for wing wire standoffs to mount to the chassis. The Mc wing would probably be fine. It seems to be the side dams that really do the work, not the downforce, unless you're running a tight track with sharp turns where a bit more downforce would help. Mounted to the body, the wing just moves all around and flutters. For me, bad idea. Wing mounted to the chassis we feel works exceptionally better. Tires, at the Velo, we use narrow tires. For any other racing, use the same tire setup that is working for the regular pan car guys which from what I've seen on outdoor tracks, would be wide rears. On indoor carpet, 3 pinks and a purple or black works great. I like the pod offset in all track situations on oval. Seems to get a bit more acceleration (bite) coming off the corner. Thanks Bandit. Bob
Bandit Racing 09-22-2004, 05:42 PM Thanks for the info Bob, so do you think it would be better to go with the Kimbrough rear wing and a Tamiya front wing, and run the car in the offset position, also where is the best point to run the antenna through the body?
rockin_bob13 09-22-2004, 05:51 PM Kimbrough rear, Tamiya front wing, offset pod is great. I use the Hypredrive center shock tower, (Associated, same), I put the antenna centered out the top of the body, behind the driver's head, but not out above the cowl induction scoop. If you roll over you'll drag the antenna straw. I make the hole a little back from the highest point on the body so if I flip the car, it drags the body, not the straw. What kind of track are you racing on, Bandit? Bob
Bandit Racing 09-22-2004, 06:21 PM Not racing anywhere yet, just wanted a change and try an Indy car, I like the Indy R/C cars chassis design, I have an old Tamiya F1 car, but it is like a toy compared to what I'm seeing now, I think its a need concept and could catch on as another class at tracks everywhere. Do you guys have a big Indy car race around the Indy 500 time frame in May?
rockin_bob13 09-22-2004, 06:30 PM You'd think so being the home of the "Indianapolis Winner's Row" No. no big open wheel events around the "500". We raced 'em at the Major Taylor Velodrome during one of the qualifying weekends. You could hear the real cars from the velo racetrack since the velo is only @ 10 blocks away from IMS. I think we had 12 Indy/F1's that day. It looks like we're going to set aside one Saturday a month to get 'em all together at the New Castle track. Indianapolis, home of the "500", the "US Grand Prix", the "US Nationals" and we have no indoor carpet on-road or oval tracks in town. Pitiful.
Bandit Racing 09-23-2004, 06:21 PM Is there any other kind of front wing besides the Tamiya that will work on these Indy cars, has anyone tried to use a graphite bumper with the foam on it for down force and front end protection?
rockin_bob13 09-23-2004, 06:59 PM The way our rules read, " front wing must be made of ABS or Nylon". Without a lexan body over the wing(bumper) I suppose you wouldn't want to have something that strong up front to hit someone/something . Plus, we've banged the Tamiya wings pretty well and they seem to take quite a hit and keep their shape well. The Duratrax wing seems to blow itself apart if you look at it the wrong way. Very brittle plastic used or poor molding design I guess. I ran an ABS wing this past summer. Aero on it was very good, but gone to the workshop building a new one in any incidental contact. (At the Velo, contact is hardly "incidental").
Bandit Racing 09-23-2004, 07:14 PM Where is the best place to get the wings, I can't find just the Tamiya wing by itself anywhere or I have missed it?
amainiac 09-24-2004, 01:40 AM I recently got the Spitfire to race onroad...Way Cool Car!!! (I know this is an oval link) but where can I get the Sauber C12 body set? Tower is out of stock. I've got a Dahms body on the way but it has the front wing is part of the body and doesn't look too strong.
kato71 09-24-2004, 08:49 AM You can try some of the Tamiya shops to see if they have some of the body kits on the shelf. Tower Hobbies has the manufacturer's actual part # on their site, so all you have to do it take that and google it until you find a Tamiya shop. I'm not sure if Rainbow Ten would have it or not, but that is another thought and well.
Yeah the Dahm's body with the molded wing is more designed for the Pan car, they have some others like the Type C, J, K, N or whatever that will work, just don't get the ones that are diamond shape because they narrow too much in the rear and that is more cutting that you will have to do.
Thanks,
Tim

rockin_bob13 09-25-2004, 01:02 PM I have a few Tamiya T94 Rahal/Hogan Miller MGD circa 1994 which is pretty much the same body style Champ cars run today for sale. Give me a PM from interested parties. Brand new in box complete with high downforce front wing, decals, rear wing.
kato71 10-19-2004, 12:46 AM I just got some pictures from a guy in Ohio that used the Williams Body and wings on the Spitfire chassis, so that is another option for those looking for a different body to try out on the chassis.
j21moss 10-22-2004, 11:49 PM hmmmmm... look who is back!!!!!! The Dr. is in da house!!!!
j21moss 10-23-2004, 12:05 AM Well I guess I got to get my Cosworth car ready for this winter racing and I'll have my Tamiya/Assc. ready just in case...As for the awesome Woods Indy car it will get its revenge next spring.. At the Velo nationals it was awesome running that car and getting that track record but a bummer off the start in the main.. I'll take a fourth anytime considering what happened... Thanks Tim for the rear cross brace you sent me.. I was lucky to borrow a GRX at the Nationals for 2 rounds of Qualifing just to save the Woods car for the last round and the main.. I got to admit, Nick C. built a fine car.. Car was pretty good..Shoot after 2 rounds of heats I was 1st and 2nd with 2 different cars...That 3rd round thou I thought Greg was going to bump me and take the record, but it barely held up..I felt so sorry for Butch for not having his car together I let him use the GRX for the last round and with a little tuning he was off.. He only qualify 10th but he did it with 1 screw left on the left rear..and it was wobbling.. He did real good in the main..finishing 3rd,, Good Job Butch..Until the next time!! I'll see you all at the track!!!! The Dr..
swtour 10-30-2004, 12:40 AM RockinBob,
I finally got to see one if the RCIndy cars get to run on our Velodrome this month.
Brad( Aka "Stretch" on our board) and Donn brought their open wheel cars out to give them a go at our series race this month. We set them up w/ 6 cell and 19t motors...they were cool and hopefully caught some attention for next season. It looks like we'll probably have 3 VELO races again in the 2005 SWTour season...
NO RAIN NEXT SEASON PLEASE
kato71 11-05-2004, 12:17 AM Yeah that was a bummer, making the trip to only run a few laps, but with 3 races next year you should have enough of an opportunity to get at least 2 races in.
I've also emailed some of the guys in California that have bought some of my chassis to let them know you are running out there, could help with the turn out for that class. Let us know the schedule when you have it set!
Tim
rockin_bob13 11-05-2004, 11:03 AM We have a bunch of people coming to the New Castle track this weekend for the normal club race. Just wanted to let you guys know in case you wanted to run in a big field of cars. Folks are coming in from Mi, Il, Oh, Ky,Wi. Monti called and a bunch of friends are coming to compare notes, getting ready for the 'Birds. Looks like 50+ entries. 19T looks like the biggest class but there will be 4-cell stock, mod, Busch, Legend, Touring stock, and I believe the Indy stockers will be making an appearance there this weekend. Track is set up and ready for cars. It's HUGE!
Bring those Indy/F1's out of retirement.
swtour 11-07-2004, 02:18 AM Bob,
We've got our VELO dates set for 2005 out here on the LEFT COAST.
Feb. 26
July 23
Oct. 22
And we've got guys interested in doing INDY Cars. Not sure how many yet, but I've had inquiries an emails.
Tim,
Think RCIndycars would like to do some type of a sponsor deal to help promote this class out west for next seasons South-West Tour series?
j21moss 11-08-2004, 12:08 AM hmmmm my girlfiend used to live in orange county... She would love to come back home for a visit.. May have to make a special trip out there and try that track with my Indy car...We'll see
kato71 12-17-2004, 12:35 PM I updated the Website, hopefully it is a little cleaner to work with and I will have the search option up shortly once I get the backend indexed.
Still have more links to add and more products. Soon will have full kits available as well as chassis upgrade kits.
mGraves 12-17-2004, 11:12 PM must be nice to race velo in Feb
Krisfo 12-18-2004, 04:35 PM Hmmm maybe I can get my Indy Car back together and run out west once ...
Kris
And of course Bob....I have said It would hit our velo and it still hasn't yet.....
Who knows??? Maybe this year
rockin_bob13 08-06-2005, 11:57 AM Rc Indy Cars set new track record at the Major Taylor Velo in Indy. I'm runnin' the car called the GRX. Velo Nationals are coming up next weekend. Herbie's Hyperdrive cars are supposed to be there. Donn from Cali has a Kiel car coming. Wood's, HPI F1 supers, Kyosho Impress are normally represented. Bring your open wheel cars out for some action at the Fastest Velo in the US. BC
j21moss 08-06-2005, 06:18 PM Bob... Nick turned a 17 4:01 today..he's coming for you...and also a Tamiya is coming next weekend
rockin_bob13 08-06-2005, 06:23 PM Nick, you're my hero. Let's get a 5 car draft going so we can get 18.
swtour 08-08-2005, 02:47 AM Hopefully you guys will help get DONN upto speed...since when he ran at Encino he only ran 4 cell...
GOOD LUCK DONN~
j21moss 08-08-2005, 09:52 AM hey no prob...!!!!!!! we'll get'em there.. we gotta beat Bob and Nick..
kato71 09-21-2005, 12:33 AM Want to say congrats to the Top3 drivers at the Velodrome Nationals, all three where running RC Indycar Chassis! Great Job!
j21moss 09-21-2005, 05:00 PM hmmmmm
yokman 09-21-2005, 08:04 PM moss-talked to scheckter in chicago and he's out of the irl next year.his house is for sale and it looks like he is going back to south africa.he is going to run in this new series though www.aigp.com (www.a1gp.com) only lasts for the winter though.maybe some one will get smart and pick him up.heck you have a couple million, hire him and put him in one of your cars.lol
j21moss 09-21-2005, 10:00 PM you got to be kidding me???? where is the money there?????? I'll bring him on!!!! I'll get Pennzoil to sponsor the cosworth and we'll both smack the competition at stout field!!!! you think???
WhirlinGraphics 09-22-2005, 04:45 AM Dr. Moss, you might want to give Eddie Cheever a call before becoming Tomas' car owner! :o Seriously, the guy has matured so much the last couple of seasons. It will be a huge loss for the IndyCar Series. :( yokman, did he say anything about why? Is his current team (Panther) going to be around next year?
I believe the first A1GP race is this Sunday? Not sure if it is being televised though? Looks like a cool series. Scott Sharp will be a coach for the Team USA.
