Girl on a Motorcycle
Brent Gair 07-23-2004, 11:30 PM I've already yakked about most of my recent gits but here's a few I may not have mentioned:
SUPER TROOPERS. I bought this because - a)People said it was funny, b)Lynda Carter is in it and c)it's only $14.66CDN ($10.85US) at Walmart. Well, it was mildly amusing. If I had to do it over again, I probably wouldn't have bought it.
DRACULA, DEAD AND LOVING IT. Considered one of Mel Brooks lesser efforts but I've always really enjoyed the film. It was inexpensive. Great transfer. It has some nice extras including a commentary track with Amy Yasbeck, Steven Weber and Mel Brooks. Very nice disc IF you are a fan of the film.
WHERE THE BOYS ARE. Besides horror and sci-fi, I'm an unapologetic sucker for "teen" movies from the 50's and 60's. This movie is from 1960. It's got a real nice widescreen transfer, commentary track and other extras. Another excellent disc IF it's your cup of tea.
FLYING LEATHERNECKS. John Wayne flying airplanes in color. That's good enough for me.
THE KILLERS. Ronald Reagan. Again, good enough for me.
LOVE FINDS ANDY HARDY. I'm a sentimental sap

^So Agree, recent used finds besides stuff mentioned in other threads:
Larry Sander's Show Season 1-Good set, but the show didn't start to really rock till after the first season. I want the episode where Artie has to retrieve Hank's widely circulated "Gilligan's Island" fantasy videotape!
Spartan- Best Val Kilmer movie in a long while, though that's faint praise.
Strange Brew- The McKenzie Bros still crack me up, but this is the worst picture I've seen on a DVD in awhile, not sure if it's the films budget or transfer that's responsible.
Starsky & Hutch- Probably would have been less charitable if I paid theater prices to see it, I thought it was fun, mostly harmless and had some funny bits. Good extras on the DVD.
Down With Love-A real surprise, I really enjoyed this, it brilliantly parodies the old musical/romance/comedies and is really cleverly done. Pretty much a perfect cast. For those of you with wives and/or SO's it's the best chick flick since "Miss Congeniality".
John P 07-24-2004, 03:56 PM Today's arrivals:
HELLBOY - will watch it tonight for our traditional Saturday night movie.
GHOST IN THE SHELL: STANDALONE COMPLEX - series version of one of the great anime movies of the last few years. Peculiar packaging - it's the first 4 episodes of the series, twice. Two disks. The only difference I can see is the audio options. One disk has Dolby Digital 5.1, the other has DTS 5.1. They couldn't put both options on one disk?

"The 5:48"
"The Sorrows of Gin"
"O Youth and Beauty!"
Pricey ($16+ each) and faded video from 1979 television. A very young Sigourney Weaver along with Edward Herrmann, Michael Murphy, Laurence Luckinbill and Mary Beth Hurt in rather painful adult dramas. Kind of an American "Scenes from a Marriage."

The Batman 07-26-2004, 10:53 PM We interrupt these "GITS" with a 'Glad I GOT'...
This is about a few cheapie dvd's that I was delighted to purchase recently. There's a brand new WalMart SuperCenter that just opened last week within walking distance of my house. I went over and checked it out - natch. While I was standing in the checkout, I noticed a box of cheap dvd's over by the Yugioh/Pokemon/Baseball etc.. cards and impulse items. These dvd's were just a buck each and labelled as CARTOON CRAZE. A couple of the dvd's were of the Fleischer Superman cartoons - I figured for a dollar a peice I'd take my chances.
I didn't really expect much from these cheapie discs, but I was surprised that these Superman transfers were beautiful! I was expecting them to be on a par with some of the video versions I'd seen - dark, muddy, practically unwatchable - but, to my surprise and delight these were crisp, clean, bright and colorful! Just gorgeous looking cartoons!
I also picked up a Betty Boop dvd but, it was only so-so. Very watchable but, not the best prints I've seen.
Anyway, if you've been meaning to pick up the Fleischer Studio Superman cartoons and haven't yet, these dollar dvd's turned out to be quite a bargain for me!

Trek Ace 07-27-2004, 07:37 AM I haven't done a whole lot of DVD buying this month. But, here goes:
Airport - Terminal Collection (all four movies)
What About Bob?
Bugsy
Chased by Dinosaurs
Disney - On the Front Lines
Rattrap 07-28-2004, 11:19 AM Picked up Hellboy last night. Much as I liked Spider-Man 2, I still think Hellboy is my favorite of this summer's movies to date.
Tomorrowland and Disney on the Front Lines are definitely in my queue, as is Millenium Season One.
John P 07-28-2004, 12:38 PM Bought a couple of new anime's blind to try out: "Wolf's Rain" and "Infinite Rivius" (whatever the hell a rivius is) (Sometimes I think they just make up words that SOUND English to them).
Both looked interesting from previews I saw. Got disk 1 of each. Will watch this weekend.
The Batman 07-28-2004, 02:19 PM Bought a couple of new anime's blind to try out: "Wolf's Rain" and "Infinite Rivius" (whatever the hell a rivius is)
Umm, is it anything like a Festivus???

PhilipMarlowe 07-28-2004, 04:55 PM I never read the comic books and was lukewarm on the first movie, but "X-men 2" rocks! Definately joins "Aliens" and "Godfather II" on my short "sequels better than the original" list....
xr4sam 07-29-2004, 02:36 AM Catch Wolf's Rain on Cartoon Network's Saturday Action block. It is a rather interesting take on the werewolf legend. Actually rather good, if a little...strange. If you find it, pick up Witch Hunter Robin. Very good story, just moves a little slow in the beginning, and rather fast at the end.
John P 07-29-2004, 08:53 AM I'm already through disk 5 of Witchhunter Robin, waiting for disk 6 to be released. :)
