View Full Version : SCH Washington New Carpet Oval Track
Mike@SteelCity 09-13-2004, 08:50 AM Mister Dinge,
Actually, I had someone else in mind as well! I "thought" I saw someone sitting in the corner bleacher section, was that you? I do remember several people coming up to the podium, but most of them were female. Maybe it is Miss Dinge?
Yes, we were test-driving the latest R/C race software by RC Scoring Pro. This is an up and coming race software designed specifically for R/C Racing. We have been beta testing this for almost a year now and it has a good look to it. But obviously, there are a few minor glitches. We had some trouble when we added 2 late entries, as the system did not like that at all. I'm sure it was a combination of "Operator Error" as well as the program.
We will also be using the latest version of Alycat which has been iron clad stable at our track in Maryland. This program has been updated as well. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. The biggest advantage of RC Scoring Pro is it has a very clean print out, and a very cool external LED display hookup that we would like to implement so both racers and spectators can watch up-to-date driver stats in real-time!
Thanks to everyone who raced. We had about 14 car entries or so... and I counted over 60 spectators throughout the day... there were probably more as there were times where I was too busy to count the groups... but it was a great 1st de-bugging day!
I think we will do the same thing this weekend. $5 for 1st car, $5 for second, and free for every car after that! Also, Open practice for the rest of September with no charge.
Thanks again!
Mike
Mike, did you see me? I did come up to the podium but you and another guy were working on that buggy race program. But it was fun to watch. Nice to see so many people in and out of the track area. Especially when the little nascars were running. The store was busy too. Maybe next time when you are not so busy we can talk.
devildog 09-13-2004, 04:26 PM For any one worried about the carpet at SCHs Tri-Oval track, I would not worry. I raced a Losi XXX-S with the rubber tires that come with it. I put a little tire compound on the and I had no problems. The tires were gripping nicely. I don't believe anyone was having a problem with traction. The track is also nice in size. I believe it to be almost 200' in length. If you live near by you should stop over and see for your self.

RcDinge 09-15-2004, 11:05 PM Hey Mike, nice to meet you finally yesterday. Whats the scoop for this saturday? Another debugging race? When will the maze be set up for touring car?

devildog 09-16-2004, 11:30 AM I saw some people working on it last night. Looks like it is going to be a blast.
erock1331 09-16-2004, 11:46 AM Anyone ran a pan car yet on the new oval?

Mike@SteelCity 09-16-2004, 12:18 PM Dinge,
Are you talking about me? Or NitroMike? We have 2 Mike's that work at the store. I have been in MD all week as Jerry is on Vacation this week. I will be back later to work on the sound system, computer system and more!

What time does racing start tomorrow and what time will the track be open for practice ?
MUSTANG 09-17-2004, 08:16 PM Doesn't look good for me for tomorrow. We could have some boat races in my basement?? All flooded and back yard caving in. See all of you next week..
I had the same problem Mustang. Was thinking about you guys as I stuck another sump pump in the basement. So How did it go for you lucky enough to race? How many guys & gals showed up what classes did u run?
highster 09-19-2004, 09:14 PM How was the racing yesterday?
McSmooth 09-20-2004, 08:11 AM .....
devildog 09-20-2004, 10:20 AM I cant wait for it to be done. I hope it is ready by this weekend. I was unable to make it this past saturday but i will be in full swing this weekend. :dude:
MaxxMadness 09-20-2004, 03:31 PM What do most of u guys run on the carpet track? i was thinking about getting in to that type of racing also, seeing that the outdoor off-road track in washington ( i think) isn't going to be made until next year..
McSmooth 09-20-2004, 03:59 PM .....
MaxxMadness 09-20-2004, 05:46 PM At SCH indoor track? i thought Touring Cars were nitro
highster 09-20-2004, 07:32 PM Hey Maxx,
What kind of Rc are you into? I see your profile says nitro monster trucks.
If I were new and starting on carpet, I would go oval all the way. Start with something good like a KSG. Don't start cheap and try to work up, you just end up spending way more money. If you need full details of what to look for drop me an e-mail.
mach3turbo 09-20-2004, 10:15 PM just wated to say checked out the s c h store and track this past weekend and it wuz
awesome great job s c h
mach3turbo 09-21-2004, 07:07 AM great job s c h very nice store & track
MaxxMadness 09-21-2004, 04:55 PM Well, im just starting to get really into Off-Road nito racing. Since the SCH in washington is doing all of this indoor stuff and completing it before the winter, i want to keep racing...I dont really wana go out and get a nice Electric on-road car..i was thinking something more towards something like a mini-t, just something to mess around with and not be to serious yet. Plus i'd be able to race it on their off-road indoor track (i think)
highster 09-21-2004, 06:08 PM At my local track we run 2wd trucks on an oval with jumps. It's a very fun class, if SCH would look at doing something like this until they get their dirt track up it would be a great option for someone like yourself. You could run a good truck like a T4 or a losi, then when the dirt track comes, you are all ready to head to the dirt.
MaxxMadness 09-21-2004, 06:26 PM Well, my truck i have right now is a nitro T-Maxx, so i think im jst gonna save up for a mini-t....they look and sound fun
highster 09-21-2004, 08:04 PM They look fun, but I can tell, as a guy that has owned 6 of them at one time, they get old very quickly. The only thing I see they are good for is a good winter day, when there is no tracks open, you hit a basement and race with your buddies. But even that gets old after about 20 minutes.
But to each his own I guess. It's just not my cup of tea. And then I don't get these guys that spend $300.00 in parts for a $100.00 truck. I will never understand that one.
MaxxMadness 09-21-2004, 08:07 PM How much does one of the cars u guys race up at SCH on a carpet track cost roughly?
deadman 09-21-2004, 09:52 PM How much does one of the cars u guys race up at SCH on a carpet track cost roughly?
well it all depends on what money you have . if you just want a touring car you can get a traxxas 4 tec for under 200.00 or you can get a tc3 for 225.00 give or take a few dollars .if you want to race oval sch had a rc10l4 on the shelf last time i was there. by the way were did you get all the dirt track info?im interested.
highster 09-21-2004, 11:03 PM I too am wondering about the dirt track. Any info on when this will be ready? I have a few T4's just waiting to tear up some dirt.
Mike@SteelCity 09-21-2004, 11:25 PM Maxx,
The best thing to do is ask questions on here, or stop by one of the local tracks and talk with the racers. That way you will pick up valuable tips on what to get, and how much to spend. Of course SCH has everything you need in the shop, and if they do not, they can get it in a day or two.
I am surprised on how large the Mini-T class has grown. It is cheap to get into (around 150 beans) with a lot of aftermarket parts to hop it up. Highster was right to say that you can easily dump over 300 into them because it can be so addicting! Last week we ran a race in the dark because a few Mini-T's had the LED lighting system installed. It was pretty cool. Stop in and check out the shop or a race this weekend, or check out the website: www.steelcityhobbies.com

Mike@SteelCity 09-21-2004, 11:32 PM Actually, we did experiment last weekend with jumps in the Mini-T class. We also had a Stadium Truck class which those trucks were pretty fast... too fast for jumping!
Thanks for the tips... we will certainly modify to the racers liking!
Also, about the "dirt" track... there was supposed to be a "communal" meeting of all the stores in the WashMall with the Mall management group and that was just post-poned. As I have stated in the past, we have been approved 100% for the track space. The question now is, how long will that space be available to us before re-construction of the mall? All we need now is confirmation that we will be able to run throughout the winter, and we will go for it! Keep your fingers crossed.
Thanks for the posts.
Mike

rcjunkie 09-22-2004, 12:12 AM Looking for a track to race when in Pitt...Does the track get any 12th cars for road racing? Is the carpet real ozite? What nights do you run at steel city?
highster 09-22-2004, 06:32 AM two.

Mike@SCH
Would you be willing to do this type of racing with sedans on the road course?

Mike
THats what makes it so much fun. You also learn a lot about the drivers skills. If you can control a "fast" stadium truck, on an oval, with jumps you just might be a better driver than you think you are.......
Mike@SteelCity 09-22-2004, 08:25 AM hahaha... yeah, I realize that... the problem is we have a few guys who really like to put the hammer down... and I am afraid a car will wind up in someone's lap! Although, the jumps we used last week were small, and placed along the stretch in front of the drivers stand... (Safe Area) We will keep trying different things. Maybe a few more jumps this weekend. That may be fun on the road course as well. hmmmm. :)

MaxxMadness 09-22-2004, 05:59 PM Can i run a 7cell pack at the track if i get the mini-t? im asking some mini-t people about what i should get. Or can we only run 6 cells?
MaxxMadness 09-22-2004, 06:00 PM Mike R.,
By the way, this is Eric...The 14 yearold who goes down to maryland every week to race...
Mike@SteelCity 09-22-2004, 06:54 PM Maxx,
Yes, you can run 6 Cell (there is no 7 Cell) with no problem! (6-cell = 7.2volts) (5-cell = 6volts) Actually, 6-Cell is what most run anyway. During our September month of "de-bugging" of the carpet & electronics, we are grouping similar cars into one class. We want to start up a points series starting in October so there we will place cars in the particular "group", such as stock and modified. Mini-T's are really taking off and our store offers the largest supply in the area. If I were buying a Mini-T, I would get the 6-Cell (SIX CELL) battery with the Peak Charger (by TeamLosi). Stop in this weekend as we should have a good Mini-T class again, and probably larger than last week (because of the bad weather) We may even have a "night" race (turning down the lights) as we have several drivers with lights.
Thanks for chiming in! We need more interactivity among RC people such as yourself!

highster 09-22-2004, 08:37 PM When is the road course going to be ready? We love running sedans, but hate to run them on an oval.
RacerXAX 09-22-2004, 09:10 PM Mike R,
The website says you are running touring car Friday evening? Why such an early start time? People have to work you know!

You said there is no 7 cell, but you told me to get one....lol uh.......
highster 09-22-2004, 09:36 PM I was wondering the same thing about the 7-cell. I didn't think the factory ESC could even handle 7-cells.
Mike@SteelCity 09-22-2004, 10:30 PM Didn't I just get finished saying there are no production 7-Cell batteries for the Mini-T?? If I said 7 Cell in person, or somewhere in the past, I meant 6 Cell. Sorry.
However I did just state in Post #93 the scenario on battery's for the Mini-T. You may have the number "7" confused with the 6-Cell being 7.2 volts. The 5-Cell is 6.0 volts. Most racers are using the SIX Cells as they have a little more oomph. The race time is 5 minutes and that means that there is plenty of juice left in either 5 or 6 cell batteries for the Mini-T. (You could run 15 min. easily)
Some racers have aircraft motors, which really zip along nicely. Lithium cells are around, but hard to get. (that is another story!)
It is fun seeing so many people customizing their Mini-T as it was the largest class last week on the Oval!
We are going to run Road Course this Friday night if anyone is interested. This will be a 1st run on the course so that means 5 bucks for anything you can bring. We are lightly advertising this because of the new layout. But if we have a lot of entries, I am sure the mall will allow us to stay open because it is their track too!
