View Full Version : Top Ten "Car Stars" of Film and TV
PhilipMarlowe 07-13-2004, 10:15 AM And Vanishing point was also a "destructive" end.
I saw Vanishing Point co-billed with Dirty Mary,Crazy Larry in the mid-seventies, kind of a destructive ending double feature
Steve244 07-13-2004, 10:31 AM So what'd they drive in "Vanishing Point" and "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry"?
ChrisW 07-13-2004, 12:40 PM Well, what about...
Mr. Bean's Mini?
f1steph 07-13-2004, 09:45 PM So what'd they drive in "Vanishing Point" and "Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry"?
That's the car in Vanishing point (well before they get hit by the train).
http://www.vanishingpointmania.com/m-1.htm
But in Dirty Mary,Crazy Larry I've got no clue, don't remember that movie at all. Should I try to see it?
MitchPD3 07-13-2004, 10:44 PM Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry...wasn't that a '69 Dodge Challenger???
MitchPD3 07-13-2004, 11:00 PM http://users2.ev1.net/~yasdnil/69chargerdmcl/69chargerdmcl.htm
Apparently a '69 Charger instead of a Challenger
f1steph 07-13-2004, 11:57 PM I guess it's the same as seen in Dukes of Hazzard but orange. I though that it was also a '69 Charger in "Vanishing point" but white until I did a little Google search. I don't even remember the last time I saw that film, just remember the crazy ending .....
ThePolarBear 07-14-2004, 03:01 AM O.K. How about these:
TRON Lightcycle
Elvira's macabremobile (was a '67 T-bird)
Last Starfighter's Star Car (most likely the first CG car on the big screen)
Bladerunner's Police Spinner
BTTF DMC (naturely)
Keaton's Batmobile (still love those wonderfull toys!!)
Forbidden Planet's Robby speed"cart" (I'm a big Deco fan)
Now a quick list of those IMHO should never make the list:
Anything from Deathrace 2000, StreetHawk, The future car from Sleeper, and Viper
f1steph 07-14-2004, 03:24 AM Last Starfighter's Star Car (most likely the first CG car on the big screen)
Are you talking about this car:
http://datacore.sciflicks.com/the_last_starfighter/images/the_last_starfighter_large_16.jpg
Actually The last Starfighter was the first ever movie using CGI and that's back in 1984. Thinking about it, I should see it again, it's been years and years that I saw that one.
Pygar 07-14-2004, 04:22 AM Oh, Robby's 'Rod of course; I still have hopes that PL will knock a few more inaccuracies out, reissue Robby with his Rod. Hey, they reissued "Claude" with Dr. Smith, didn't they?
I have a sneaking fondness for the little car Sam Lowry drove in "Brazil"; I think it was the same type that Cousin Itt drove in "The Addams Family". Dunno the type but it looked more like luggage than vehicle.
I've never seen Thelma and Louise; would I be correct in assuming no sequel is likely?
f1steph 07-14-2004, 04:42 AM I've never seen Thelma and Louise; would I be correct in assuming no sequel is likely?
Yep, no sequel. Well maybe onlyn if the story is happening somewhere in heaven and this time with a Lamborghini Diablo.........

Messerschmitt KR 200 Kabinen. (http://www.myclassiccar.com/CoolCars/closeups/other/1955messerschmitt/) vunderbar.
Revell even makes a kit. Or not, methinks it's prebuilt diecast. (http://www.discounttrainsonline.com/Revell-of-Germany-Imported-Automobile-scale-118-Messerschmitt-KR-2000/itemRMG-8917.html)

What of all those great British road cars driven by john Steed? How about all those flimsy looking cars from UFO??
Pygar 07-14-2004, 06:22 PM Thanks!
Can't tell from the pic if it is a left or a right, or how you lace it up...
jwrjr 07-14-2004, 06:34 PM If we are considering animation (Supercar), how about Rally Vincent's 1967 Shelby GT 500.

Well TRON was the first to use CGI vehicles, but Starfighter use it to represent a "real" car. (not to nit-pick) :D
terryr 07-15-2004, 12:36 AM Steeds car is a Blower Bentley, the king of British motorcars. I think Bond drove one in the books, and was briefly seen in the movies.
Steed's Bentley was blown up by an old foe in the New Avengers a decade later; it was resurrected for the movie. In 'Moonraker', Bond drove his Bentley in pursuit of Hugo Drax (one of the very few well-written literary car-chases); it was seen briefly during 'From Russia With Love'.
And Bond's Bentley was in the car chase from Casino Royale, along with a Jag and a bomb-laden milk-truck
mactrek 07-17-2004, 09:10 AM How about this one...
... O-k, no pic ... lets try this again...
mactrek 07-17-2004, 09:23 AM How about this one...
Steve244 07-17-2004, 11:10 AM Well, what about...
Mr. Bean's Mini?
An excellent example!

Lovemy71Camaro 04-27-2006, 05:04 PM Knightrider's K.I.T.T. was a cool one.
Ohio_Southpaw 04-27-2006, 09:21 PM I always liked the Dodge Turbo Interceptor from 'The Wraith' One sleek, clean, bad-*ss vehicle.
scotpens 04-28-2006, 05:07 AM . . . Elvira's macabremobile (was a '67 T-bird). . . Actually it's a ’58. Or possibly a ’59 or ’60; thay all had the same sheetmetal.
For you RV buffs, there's the modified GMC Motorhome from Stripes, and the two sinister-looking black vans (Rectrans Discoverer motorhomes) from Slither with James Caan and Sally Kellerman. Don't know if they strictly count as "cars," but if Supercar can be on the list, I guess anything goes! And the Gene Winfield custom creation featured in the ST:TOS ep "Bread and Circuses."

Jim NCC1701A 04-28-2006, 07:21 AM Well TRON was the first to use CGI vehicles, but Starfighter use it to represent a "real" car. (not to nit-pick) :D
Are you sure about Tron being CGI? I was under the impression it was animation...
Always thought the Genesis demonstration in TWOK was the first use of CG in a movie...
chiangkaishecky 04-28-2006, 10:51 AM Are you sure about Tron being CGI? I was under the impression it was animation...
Of course TRON used CGI

How could some of those shots be hand draw animation?
Especially the crazy camera moves?

The timeline at wikipedia zounds about right.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_CGI_in_films
terryr 04-28-2006, 10:52 AM It was computer animation. The people were real, in day-glo suits, and the rest was cgi.
Since this thread is 2 years old, I'll add Batmans' Tumbler.
LUKE'57 04-28-2006, 07:55 PM I remember seeing the real Bond Aston Martin DB-5 in action appearing with the Royal Marine Tattoo in the mid sixties. It was cool but ol' Robert Mitchum beat Mr. Bond to the punch by about seven years with his character in "Thunder Road". His '50 Ford Tudor had, in addition to the moonshine tank, he had an oil slick and dump valve for the load.
bert model maker 04-28-2006, 11:43 PM nope 69 dodge charger R/T 440 Magnum, they used a few different chargers in filming and i was able to buy one of them in 1976 from the motor pool that we used to get our vehicles when i worked with quinn martin productions on the Streets of San Francisco, it was a little banged up but still had the original california license plate that was on the car and it was the car used for the close ups. the one with the license plate 938 DAN is mine and the one with the helicopter overhead is also mine it is the same one used when they left the flea market taking a sheriffs patrol drivers door off, and also used in the bar/pool table scene, ( el charros in Linden Ca.) this movie was filmed in the stockton, Ca. area My ex wife rewrecked it when she let her younger sister drive it or try too 13 years old and she got onto the freeway on ramp on hwy 101 in S.F.by mistake and got hit at the top of the onramp, i sure do miss that car.
bert model maker 04-28-2006, 11:44 PM the one hitting the train was a stunt double pulled by a steel cable from the other side
bert model maker 04-28-2006, 11:46 PM http://users2.ev1.net/~yasdnil/69chargerdmcl/69chargerdmcl.htm

vanishing point was a white 1970 challenger R/T

PerfesserCoffee 05-01-2006, 05:47 PM The only reason the General Lee was #1 was due to its having a large Confederate flag on the roof
