JerseyPhoenix 07-07-2004, 05:20 PM :quote: Paramount had no comment Friday on a report that producers of UPN's struggling Trek series, Enterprise, were planning on recruiting Shatner.
Executive producer Rick Berman is quoted in the sci-fi magazine Starburst as saying he wanted to discuss "some possible ways of [Shatner] being involved" in the series' upcoming fourth season. :quote:
This scares me more than the idea of Alzheimer's.

This scares me more than the idea of Alzheimer's.Gee. What a wonderfully glib comment.
JerseyPhoenix 07-07-2004, 05:50 PM Sorry. But while I am truely simpathetic for James and his family, I got completely fearful over the Shatner references to Enterprise.
I'm still unnerved by that.
terryr 07-07-2004, 06:44 PM I saw Charlton Heston when he resigned from the NRA, and I could see the feebleness setting in. To me, this is the worst way to go. To just be erased slowly and be nothing more than a crap factory.
John O 07-07-2004, 06:44 PM Well, I can say for sure that the families I personally know who have lost a loved one to this really crappy disease would endure any amounts of viewing the collected works of William Shatner in exchange for even a better death. Its just THE MOST AWFUL way to go.
BTW, did anyone do the math on Doohan and his wife? If he was 80 and his wife 43 when they had their kid, and they'd been married 25 years at that point: means when they were married, he was 55 and she was 18!!! You go, Jimmy!! The man has lived well, I guess. I'm 41 and it would have to be a pretty extraordinary 18 year old for me to stand her.

They sure took their time having kids!
He's a braver man than I. I'm only 36, and I would be scared out of my mind to marry an 18-year-old. Even now, that's half my age!
The man has lived well, I guess.
There is that.

almostvirgin 07-07-2004, 09:39 PM Where would that cowboy Kirk's neck be without the ever dependable Scotty - "Beam me up"
Hell, I'm 49 and I'm marrying a 33 yr old beauty!
They say the ideal set-up is a woman 7 years older than half your age.
tardis1916 07-08-2004, 01:21 AM Keep in mind, they say this is the early stages. So they may be able to treat this. In another article it said he just has trouble find words sometimes, he has no trouble with memory, just finding the words.
almostvirgin 07-08-2004, 02:07 AM They say the ideal set-up is a woman 7 years older than half your age.So when you were 33 she was like 17 - so you would have been one of those creepy old guys?? I'm sorry man, I couldn't resist that. ;)
25 to go
John O 07-08-2004, 07:26 AM They say the ideal set-up is a woman 7 years older than half your age. My Father, who fancies himself quite the Irishman, always told me his Father's advice was that a good Irishman doesn't marry until he's 35 and then he marries a girl who's 25. Coincidentally or not, that matches your fomula pretty closely - 35:24.5. Maybe if I'd followed either the advice or the fomula, I could have avoided a lot of trouble.

Zorro 07-08-2004, 10:32 AM I married a woman 10 years younger than myself when I was 37 years old (my first and only marriage). She's a lot smarter and more mature than I am. And she keeps me "young".:)
My mother has Alzheimers. Yes, you can "slow it down" somewhat with medication. But it always wins in the end.
Steve244 07-08-2004, 10:55 AM So when you were 33 she was like 17 - so you would have been one of those creepy old guys?? I'm sorry man, I couldn't resist that. ;)

naw, according to his formula when he was 33, 7 plus 16.5 is 23.5.
The only problem I see is he'd have to keep trading 'em in to keep the equation balanced.
beeblebrox 07-08-2004, 10:56 AM I am the legal guardian of my 83 yr old great aunt. When someone asks almost every day how their sisters are doing and you have to remind her that they are all dead, it's not a pleasant experience. You can't sidestep a question or tell them a lie because in the few moments of clarity they will see it and lose their trust in you. We can only hope when our time comes, there's someone around to help us through the tough times.

python 07-08-2004, 11:21 AM I just heard about this on the radio yesterday. Very, very sad.
I am not a big Trek fan like so many others on the board, but I thought I would pass this on to those of you who are.
I was in the movie/video distribution business about 8 years ago and we had Mr. Doohan in our offices to promote a new video release. He arrived on time, but his studio rep had miscalculated the outgoing flight information and the two of them were stuck for almost three hours with nowhere to go.
The point of all this is that he was one of the most gracious, down to earth and pleasant celebrities I have ever encountered. He sat in my office and we shot the bull about everything under the sun - rarely mentioning Trek. I'll always remember him for his quick smile and wonderful personality. A real gentleman. He also mentioned that he had met his wife in South San Francisco - a suburb where I was born and raised.
Let's all hope that this insidious disease doesn't cause him any undue pain
or suffering.
almostvirgin 07-08-2004, 11:27 AM I gotta agree with you there Beetleb - my mom only lived a short while after her diagnosis and it explained a lot of her behavior the previous couple three years. I remember a particularly bad visit back home when my crackhead brother was arguing with Mom, and I tried to make peace - only to have her break down crying saying she never dreamed I would toss my hat in with "those" people (he really is a crackhead) She never was the same towards me - not the memories she or I should have had in her last year.

My Aunt managed to alienate everyone in my family over the years but doesn't remember any of those things she did. In a way she's paying for it now and I don't have that streak of cruelty that says "You're getting what you deserve, deal with it alone."
almostvirgin 07-08-2004, 12:00 PM naw, according to his formula when he was 33, 7 plus 16.5 is 23.5.
The only problem I see is he'd have to keep trading 'em in to keep the equation balanced.Uh, let's do the math. Calculator in hand, math not my strong suit, let's see. He's 49, she's 33....so....just a minute....ah ha. 16 yr. difference. So when she was 17, he was 33. A creepy old guy.
Applying the formula, then SHE should be dating a 17 yr. old guy.
Anyway, Yam - best of luck to the both of ya !
22 to go. I'm not gonna make it.

Now, the older guys here (you geezers, I mean ;) ) may differ, but I would think that by the time a person is 33, there's a good chance you've determined at least some of what you want out of life. I would think your chances in that case are pretty decent. But 18? There are 18-year-olds who are pretty mature, but how can you tell? They can all act mature (if only at gunpoint! :jest: )
My first wife was significantly younger than I was (I was 29 when we married, and she was 20). My second wife was closer to my age (just three years younger than I am). On the whole, I think the younger one had a much better idea of what she wanted than the older one, so there are no hard and fast rules.
I am now involved (e-mail and phone calls only, so far) with a 24-year-old, but she is from a very different culture (she is African). It is extremely promising so far; I'll let you guys know how it proceeds.

' I can't hold together much longer.'
He's getting his walk of fame Star in Aug. He may not know he has it but he'll have it.
razorwyre1 07-09-2004, 08:26 AM well guys im 44, and the young lady i was entertaining over the holiday weekend couldnt order alcohol in the club we went to.... which is a bit extreme i admit. i remember another very happy couple though wherre she was 18 and he 40. remember in the far east, such age differences are considered status symbols for both partners...
as to mr. doohan it is indeed sad, but such things are to be expected at such an advanced age. fortunatly we live in an era where there are treatments to lessen, however slightly, the impact of such conditions
dreamer 07-09-2004, 10:53 AM Doohan also has suffered for some time with Parkinson's disease, diabetes and fibrosis, the latter due to chemical exposure during the Second World War and the D-Day invasion in France.
Shows how admirable the man is, to have the strength, toughness, to stand up to all that and still be the kind, gentle, thoughtful and charming man that he is.
terryr 08-30-2004, 11:36 PM Update:
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- James Doohan beamed his way through the first of a series of events honouring him in what are expected to be his final public appearances.
The 84-year-old actor who played Scotty on Star Trek laughed and smiled throughout a Hollywood tribute Saturday night featuring fellow cast members and about 600 guests.
Doohan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease several months ago and the event at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel served as a fundraiser for an Alzheimer's research foundation.
Doohan, whose character was Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott of "Beam me up, Scotty" fame, was also appearing Sunday on a stage with the entire surviving cast of the original sci-fi series, including William Shatner (Capt. Kirk) and Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock). He is getting a star Tuesday on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The events are expected to be the final public appearances for Doohan, who also suffers from Parkinson's disease and diabetes.
On Saturday, Doohan was heralded by a bagpipe player and speakers included Walter Koenig, who played Pavel Chekov on Star Trek.
PhilipMarlowe 08-30-2004, 11:52 PM The guy's a class act, I had no idea he was 84....
I was there at the "Beam me up, Scotty...One Last Time" gathering though I couldn't afford the tickets to the dinners on Saturday and Sunday night. On Sunday afternoon, there was a film tribute to Scotty/Mr. Doohan that was very moving and there wasn't hardly a dry eye in the house. Then I got my first look at Mr. Doohan and could see how the disease has already taken a lot from him. He still smiled and talked a little but it was there.
I had heard that Shatner and Doohan had burried old hatchets but I wonder if there were other personality conflicts that were going on with two other cast members. The event was selling 50 tickets for $600 each to get a picture of yourself with all "the original crew". Yet, Majel Roddenberry and Grace Lee Whitney weren't included in the picture but were there. And of course, Walter Konieg was there though technically he wasn't one of the original crew. Anyway, I thought it was odd those two ladies weren't included in the pictures.
I got to meet Mr. Doohan's oldest son, Monty. (BTW, Mr. Doohan has 3 kids from his first wife and 3 from his young bride.) Monty is a down to earth guy and mentioned that his godfather is Lorne Greene. Both Mr. Green and Doohan are Canadians and yes, Shatner is too.

Does any one know what the dal is between Shatner and Doohan? Is this common knowledge?
I met GLW at a New York convention and she did seem a bit weird.
PerfesserCoffee 09-01-2004, 10:44 AM On the radio this morning, I heard Doohan died. Is that true?
PhilipMarlowe 09-01-2004, 11:39 AM They showed him on the Today Show this morning getting a star on Hollywood, but said it was his last public appearence, I assumed they would have heard if he had died .....
PerfesserCoffee 09-01-2004, 02:20 PM Thanks, Philip, that's good to hear. Someone was apparently confused on the radio. I missed the news this morning and last night so I wasn't sure.
