View Full Version : The Triplets of Belleville
John P 05-31-2004, 10:32 AM Roger Ebert is right, this is the most bizarre animated film you'll ever see. And I've seen My Neighbor Totoro!
Zorro 05-31-2004, 11:20 AM But is it good? I've heard some raves.
The Batman 05-31-2004, 11:31 AM But is it good? I've heard some raves.
I've heard a lot of good stuff about it too. Maybe someday I'll actually get around to seeing it.

John P 05-31-2004, 06:24 PM It's ... I GUESS it's good :freak:
I'm still processing. It's SO different from anything else I've seen lately.
We were worried about wether it's in English or French. Well, don't worry, there's almost NO dialogue in the whole 81 minutes. There's "popeye mumbling" in many places, and source audio like TV and radio voices - that's all in French, but it's not remotely important to understand it. There are exactly TWO lines of dialogue, one at the start and one at the end, that frame the story, and they're in English. It's VERY odd.
The story?
Grandma raising young boy. She trains him to be a byciclist to compete in the Tour de France. He's kidnapped by the French Mafia (!?) and forced to perform in illegal stationary bycicle races (?!?!!) in the city of Belleville. Grandma and his dog Bruno track him down and try to free him, with the aid of the VERY odd retired singing act The Triplets Of Belleville - three old women who live in an abandoned building, and eat only frogs which they blow out of a nearby swamp with grenades. (?!?!?!?!)
it's ... quirky.
Zorro 05-31-2004, 07:08 PM I think I like it!
Arronax 06-02-2004, 09:53 AM I've been posting encouragements to see this film for the last four months! It's very different but a great movie all the same.
If you are still bewildered, check out the trailer at http://www.sonyclassics.com/triplets/ - enter website, pan right until you see the word "video." Click on one of the two colored button below the TV screen.
Rent it this weekend and avoid the lines for "Harry Potter!"

Well Johnp, how do you catch your frogs?
John P 06-02-2004, 12:28 PM Usually red-handed!
Andrew Gorman 06-02-2004, 01:37 PM It's a great movie! But I also like "Celine and Julie go Boating". Someday I will build a 2CV limo from triplets.

John P 06-02-2004, 01:40 PM Now if I could just get that damn SONG out of my head!

That's exactly what a friend of mine said after seeing Moulin Rougé.
it's ... quirky.
Sounds like you have a gift for understatement.
how do you catch your frogs?
I thought you were supposed to mesmerize them with a neon sign advertising beer, then follow the synchronized croaking. Although, I have to say that explosives make most anything more fun! :D

John P 06-02-2004, 04:11 PM The funniests thing about that bit, for some reason, is that the granade this little old lady pulls out is a German potato-masher. And she has such a sublime smile on her face when she does it.
fluke 08-24-2004, 10:54 AM I should have looked to see if there was thread on this somewhere.
FROGSICLES?.......you gotta love it! :freak:
John P 08-24-2004, 01:33 PM Eeet's a-hokay. I had to search the archive like crazy to find it.
ChrisW 08-24-2004, 04:41 PM It's slow...we're used to quicker edit cuts in the states, where this movie lingers on the scenes. Some wonderful characters...and caricatures...
I liked the idea of the "old" animation done in the round, rubber band-arm style of the 20s and 30s.
