View Full Version : Dirt Runners Outdoor Season 2004
rgross98 08-30-2004, 11:15 PM Hey guys,
I asked a question a couple days back regarding the t3 and gearing. I was wrong, the t3 has a 84 tooth spur. I am running a 9t double motor. What size pinion should I run? I will use it on street and dirt, I am looking for a good mix of top speed and torque, with the scale tipped towards speed. The smallest pinion I have is a 15, will that damage the motor? I would like the brushes and comm to last as long as possible since it is for my cousin who will not know how to rebuild it and I will be an hour away.
If I have to get optimal gearing what would that be? Becuase I am willing to go to the hobby shop after work and pick up the gears if they carry them. Probably zepplins.
Thanks for any input or help that you could provide.
Robert
P.S. Gary I hope you weren't saying that I am very slow and couldn't do well without a revo ;) Becuase if you were? You might have something there, the revo is really easy to tune, it's perfect out of the box :)
nicwald 08-30-2004, 11:16 PM I am running steves vanhorns t-maxx now, and i ran it sunday and i got the track record with it, i can't believe that, i really couldnt believe what scott gave up
What do you expect? its a 4wd monster than can run stuff over! They're all going to run good!

kybob 08-30-2004, 11:23 PM hey rob in the t3 manual it says for a 10 turn motor to use 87 spur and 16 pinion so i would assume use an 87 spur and a 15 pinion.

gear it 14/84..... but buy a 13t as well..... .. heck i'd conservatively gear it 14/87.. and make sure you set the timing on tha motor to 0*

USPatriot 08-30-2004, 11:47 PM No knock on Steve or his truck, but I suspect your driving may have had a little to do with it ...;)
You might have been even faster if you were driving Scott's Revo. When I look at people like Rob Gross who went from Maxxes to Revos, it looks like a lot of them went quicker.
A good driver with a slow car will always beat a bad driver with a fast car - take it from someone who's had some fast cars, and gets beat a lot!! ;)
lol, i just have to say though, it is so much fun driving the maxx, and it hooks up. I just am lucky because i dont have to cash to dish out to run a revo or a maxx, it just is such a different experiance from running the 2wds
So gary about that slot car stuff, who wins the bad driver with the slow slot car(me) or you, haa
Oh i think i might make the trip to marshalls this weekend, so i will prob see ally ou guys there, i cant wait, it is so much fun!!

wayneny 08-31-2004, 10:19 AM Gary K. It is easy for people to make fun of Dirtrunners only running one heat for Nitro. I checked Hobby Hut results for their last race and they only had 35 entries total. I could'nt believe how fast the day went with 111 entries. It seemed like there were so few people. I guess after 175 it all becomes relative. One other thing that I must mention is that we only had two freq. conflicts in the morning and then only one for the mains. That helps move things along.
On another subject. Running my 1/8 buggy for the first time was incredible. It was so much fun to drive. I can't believe I made the A main the first time out. And now for the best part. The Monster Oval race was absolutely the most fun I have ever had running an R/C car. Paul and I swapped the lead back and forth right down to the last second. It was way coooooool.
Next subject. A bunch of racers from Dirtrunners are making a day trip to Marshall's this sunday. The way I see it is the more the merrier. If you need thier number you can get it www.marshallshilltophobbies.com. It is not hard to get there and thier offroad track is a blast to run on.
See everyone soon..............................WAYNE
kybob 08-31-2004, 10:26 AM what day are you guys planing on going up there because sunday the 7th on their newsletter it says:

wayneny 08-31-2004, 10:47 AM Erik, that was from last year. This sunday they are having a regular race schedule, then later on at night they are having a special hour long race for electrics and a 1/2 hour race for nitro. Try and get as many of your Bud's to come up. We will have a great time. Just like the last time we went there.................WAYNE

See everyone soon..............................WAYNEHey, I just answer calmly, rationally and respectfully, and then don't worry about what anyone says...like you say, scheduling is a whole different game with 35 entries.
I was impressed with your drive in 1/8th scale, too. I always knew if you tried enough classes, we'd eventually find one you can drive ;) . I'm glad that you thought that the Mayhem/RG combo worked for you. It'll probably be the most reliable car we race, too ;)
I had fun announcing the TMaxx race between you and Paul. When you have a race like that, you don't care who wins.
Like Wayne says, y'all ought to come to Marshalls this Sunday. Last time we had a terrific day. Great track, super nice people. Its fun when the DR crew goes "on the road". Bill and Dot made us feel very welcome, and were appreciative of our supporting them. Wayne - you ought give Bill a call and let em know we're coming again...

GeorgeW 08-31-2004, 03:52 PM Anybody have a good explaination for BARNSTORMERS scheduling an 1/8 scale race on the day of the Challenge. I've been told he knows our schedule and still Lou has this $1000.00 to win, $50.00 to enter 1/8 scale race. I just don't get it. GW

Personally, I don't ascribe any sinister motives to what Lou decided with the Crazy 8s race. He ran this race last year, also in the fall (it was in October last year). I suspect he decided trying to get a race run in October is too risky with the weather. I think he also (correctly) decided there wasn't a whole lot of crossover between his track and DR in terms of potential participation. I own an 1/8th scale, and if DR wasn't running on a week that he was running the Crazy 8's, I'm still not sure I'd be much of a customer for his race. I would say the reverse is also true, DR and the Challenge doesn't hold a huge appeal to most of Lou's racers. Look, he runs his track to make money, not lose money, and I think he looked at DR and the Challenge as a non-event as far as he was concerned. Like most business decisions, you try it and see what works and what doesn't, and you learn and move on. Scheduling conflicts are just a fact of racing life.
GeorgeW 08-31-2004, 05:12 PM That sounds like a reasonable answer,Gary. My main concern is having Samantha as our race director for the Challenge. She would sound great with Rory's sound equipment. Also, sounds like I have a "HIRED GUN" to run the school bus in the Challenge.:) gW
wayneny 08-31-2004, 05:25 PM Tone, what I was talking about was something I read on another forum. I check the results from other tracks all over. Most places are happy to get 35-40 entries. I guess the masses seem happy with the way Dirtrunners is going. I am really looking forward to a great Challenge this year. The racing has been great and very close. There are'nt really any races that anybody is running away from the rest of the field. That's what makes it so much fun.
Charlie, I have to agree with Gary. I don't think we will lose anybody to the Barnstormers race. 50.00 to enter is pretty steep to play with your toys. He may get msome racers from other places to come. We can check afterwards to see who had a better day.
Gary, I will give Bill and Dot a call and let them know that Dirtrunners is making another field trip on sunday. Hopefully more of the gang can make it. Mark Stern said he might make the trip up too.
See everyone soon......................WAYNE

MixMastaMM 08-31-2004, 11:13 PM hey do any of you knwo if you can dye rims with tires laready mounted on them
To dye the rims you have to boil them, which would make the glue release from the rims. I would say not to also because of the foam inserts.
Mike

its not the DYE that'll ruin them..... its the boiling hot water that will... i know... but i figured i'd toss in a little attitude with my response, since you were prolly expecting some attitude.... where's the linkage??? i wanna see which ones!!

Sammy,
What i run is either a big block (team Orion) or a peak raider. no stock here! i also run some whacky gearings.... i've been using the Team Xray M18 pinions so that i can gear my raider 17/59 and my bigblock either 19/59 or 21/59 (i DO NOT recommend 21/59 - it killllllls the motor..)
i've also run the Team Orion Baja with some success, and have also tried the Fantom mini-modified - didnt last too long tho....
if you need anything during the course of the day - like setup tips or whatnot, come see me, i'll be glad to help......
