View Full Version : revell to re-issue "FLYING SUB"
ironman 05-01-2004, 11:53 AM hey folks,..............
I saw on megahobby.com website (comming soon), that revell will be re-issueing the flying sub.
I sure do wish that PL would have re-popped it
Steve CultTVman Iverson 05-01-2004, 12:21 PM Revell owns the molds... making it somewhat impossible for PL to repop!
Steve
chiangkaishecky 05-01-2004, 04:58 PM This was announced awhile back

but it's still great news the second time around.
I stupidly didn't buy the most recent reissue but I'll definitely pick up one this time around.
I like to believe Probert subconsciously paid homage to the Flying Sub when he designed the Enterprise D's engineering section.
John P 05-01-2004, 11:49 PM Frankenstein, Wolfman, Prisoner, CFTBL, Witch, Mummy, etc... No big deal, either way, It's getting done, Which is cool.
Do those molds still exist?
In any case, what should PL do, offer to buy the FS molds from Revell (who wouldn't sell them), or do a reverse-engineer mold-making of a kit that has a perfectly good set of molds existing, and have Revell sue them for copyright violation? Hm?
Trek Ace 05-02-2004, 12:42 AM Hey. Makes sense to me!!!
Brent Gair 05-02-2004, 12:58 AM Frankenstein, Wolfman, Prisoner, CFTBL, Witch, Mummy, etc... No big deal, either way, It's getting done, Which is cool.
Of course (as you must obviously know) PL didn't repop those kits (Witch an Prisoner being special exceptions).
If you read the box, they were "CineModels kit DISTRIBUTED by Polar Lights". "Manufactured for Cinemodels by Revell-Monogram, Inc."
Steve CultTVman Iverson 05-02-2004, 06:41 AM Revell owns Frankenstein, Dracula, Mummy, Wolfman, Creature, Kong, Godzilla, and Forgotten Prisoner. Those were repoped for Polar several years ago. The Witch, Hunchback, and most others were reversed engineered by Polar as the molds are long gone.
The last kit repopped by Revell/Monogram for Polar Lights was the Forgotten Prisoner and that was a couple years ago. Currently, Revell and Polar are not working together to release product. This may have something to do with Revell getting into the diecast market and viewing Playing Mantis/Johnny Lightning/Polar Lights as competition.
You can probably bet that is why Polar has not released the Flying Sub. That is most likely why Revell is.

John P 05-02-2004, 09:48 AM Anyway, the point it, the FS IS being released, so what's the problem? :)
i also noticed under the glencoe release that the lindberg space transport and space station are also scheduled for this year. promises promises, they've had those listed off and on for 5 years, maybe it'll happen this time?? ok, so there's no tv tie in, i still like them for nostalgia reasons
A Taylor 05-02-2004, 01:19 PM Thanks for the confirmation and heads up Ironman!
Kaos, I hope they finally make it out this time as well, those are very cool kits.

John P 05-02-2004, 06:48 PM Wow, I remember that Lindeberg space station - I remember buying it so long ago I had to ride my bike to the store! I think I still have obe of the solar collector troughs in my scrap box...
Dave Hussey 05-04-2004, 01:42 PM John - Is that the one that had a flat landing pad at the hub of the station with two space vehicles sitting on the pad?
Where can I get one!!

Glencoe? I thought they went out of business. Steve, do you have any Intel?
Dave Hussey 05-05-2004, 02:39 PM Here's a review of the old Lindbergh kit. Megahobby.com is reporting that it will be re-released this year. Click on the "Coming soon" button on their site.

JamesDFarrow 05-05-2004, 03:29 PM Hmmmmmmm! Starting to see diorama possibilities with
the Polar Lights kits and this Space Station.
Hmmmmmmm!
James :)
Ignatz 05-05-2004, 04:56 PM Glencoe is still chugging along, marked by sparodic releases. Don't know if anything is new from the current back catalog, but one can always hope. I know I do! I wish the Glencoe site was still up. It didn't change much, but it was conforting affirmation that the company is still around and that the kits will flow.

Ignatz, Glad to hear they're still in business. I make several trips to Boston each year and I'd love to stop by their shop to see what's happening.
Marty Hopkirk 05-18-2004, 03:55 AM Any one know the street date for the flying sub?
Marty.............
bert model maker 05-20-2004, 03:10 PM i heard the original flying sub kit had a problem with fit and warpage of the roof . i wonder if they will correct that problem with the reissue ???
Big Daddy Dave 05-22-2004, 01:20 PM i heard the original flying sub kit had a problem with fit and warpage of the roof . i wonder if they will correct that problem with the reissue ???There was quite an extensive thread on this over on Steve's board. The consensus was that if you soaked it in hot water it could be reshaped for a better fit. (I won't even go into the whole toilet cooling tank thing..)
bert model maker 05-23-2004, 02:01 AM i am hoping that they fix the fit, toilet tank ? that puts a picture in my mind !!! lol
John P 05-23-2004, 10:30 AM I don't think Revell/Monogram has ever "fixed" a kit for reissue. Pretty sure we'll be getting it exactly as Aurora issued in in '66. And Monogram in the 70s. And Tsukuda in the 80s. And Monogram again in the 90s. :D
bert model maker 05-23-2004, 10:35 AM which issue had the warpage problem with the top half ? or did all of them ?
Brent Gair 05-23-2004, 01:18 PM Geez, do I ever REGRET mentioning that the toilet "incident". Yeah, that was me. Of all the posts I've ever made, that seems to be the only thing that people remember.
But the model turned out fine:
http://groups.msn.com/WorldAccordingtoGair/models.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=102
The kit had SEVERE warpage. And the roof section was actually the least of it. the main fuselage/lower wing had a real corkscrew thing happenning.
However, I was completely fixable. Reshaping parts in hot water is standard modelling practice and ANYBODY can do it. It's just one of the required skills like gluing or painting. Don't be scared by warpage. I probably have to do some minor warp correction on half the kits I make. The FS did take an exceptional amount of correction, though.
Just take the offending part and dunk it in scalding hot water. Wear thick dishwashing or rubber gloves. I use the hottest water from the hot water tap. Don't use boiling water...we want to reshape the part...not turn it into a Salvador Dali sculpture! Twist the part WELL PAST the point of warp removal. In other words, if the trailing edge of the wing is .25" too low, then twist it about a full inch too high. That's because the plastic has a memory and will try to return to it's original warped state. If you only bend the plastic until it is "just right", it will always return to the warped shape.
This will take multiple attempts. Hot water-bend-cool, hot water-bend-cool...keep going until it's right.
Unfortunately for me, when I did this, I used the bathroom sink for hot water. Therefore, in order to cool it, I used the nearest source of cold water which happened to be the toilet. So I was moving the sub back and forth between the sink and the toilet. Wish I'd never admitted to it but it's too late now!
Luckily, the completed model vindicates my method.

Hey, we've all been there...well, maybe not there, but you know what I mean. :p

No kidding! Beautiful job! I've always thought the FS was one of the best designs for an Irwin Allen production, and it compliments the Seaview perfectly! Can't wait to get one; it's been twenty-something years since the last one I built.
chiangkaishecky 02-10-2005, 01:23 PM so what happened to this re-issue?
Dave Hussey 02-10-2005, 02:17 PM I dunno. The Flying Sub is no longer listed on the "Coming Soon" section of Megahobby's site, although the Glencoe Space Station is still listed there.

bert model maker 02-10-2005, 11:34 PM so what happened to this re-issue?
is there going to be a reissue ? who will make it, i am surprised polar lights didn't reissue it, it would have been something !

Didn't read the rest of the thread, eh?
Revell/Monogram owns the original Aurora molds, and reissues the kit every few years. Polar Lights was never in a legal position to make a repop.
What makes you think a PL repop would be any better than a Revell/Monogram rerelease of the original?
bert model maker 02-11-2005, 02:43 PM maybe Pl would correct the warpage problem i hear about, If PL came out with one i would have got one but as it is, they are hard to find around here :)
Dave Hussey 02-11-2005, 03:23 PM I'm just wondering what happened to the revell monogram re-issue that was originally scheduled for 2004!
I don't care who's name is on the box. Even if it were Polar Lights, I'm pretty sure that they would have used existing molds and not bothered to fix any warpage. But Brent Gair can tell you how to use your toilet bowl to fix that anyway.
Talk about a voyage to the bottom of the sea!!! Eeeeeeeeeewww!!!

talk about a whirlpool " wheres admiral nelson sharky"? oh, he and capt. crane took the flying sub for a "SPIN" just talked to the admiral and he sounded a little "flushed"
Seaview 02-12-2005, 01:38 PM IMHO, there is a distinct possibility that Revell looked at the sales figures for the PL re-issues of Spindrift and Seaview and made their decision to proceed or not dependant on that data. While this is bad news for us sci fi model builder/collectors, it is a safe and sound way of conducting business from their perspective.
I still have one completely MIB Flying Sub from the 1988 Hobby Time reissue, so if any of you guys just positively HAS to have one (or you'll just keel over in grief), send me a PM.
Otherwise, I'm keeping it until I just HAVE to build it to prevent myself from keeling over in Aurora Classic Kit Re-issue Withdrawal Syndrome.
Dave Hussey 02-13-2005, 12:40 PM I understood that the Seaview and Spindrift were selling quite well. Using your logic, the Flying Sub re-issue would be a sure bet. However, I'd like to hear something official from Revell.
Does anyone know what the official comment is?
Huzz
A Taylor 02-14-2005, 12:17 PM Officially, I have no idea.
Hope they don't tank this one, though - yes, it's been re-issued several times over the years, but it always gives me a good feeling to buy a new one... something's inherently "right" in a world where you can by an Aurora Flying sub re-issue kit off Hobby Store shelves. It's comforting.
Hey James, how about posting the Hobby Lobby sales info on this board, as well?
Thanks,
Anthony
lisfan 02-14-2005, 12:46 PM Ignatz, Glad to hear they're still in business. I make several trips to Boston each year and I'd love to stop by their shop to see what's happening.

Ignatz 02-17-2005, 03:04 PM Holy Chalupa! This thread started almost a year ago!
Sparetime Shop is in Marlboro MA, about 50 minutes West of Boston, off route 20. Worth the trip! Make a list of stuff you need. They have a ton of finishing materials, several lines of paint, tons of books and magazines, and one side of the gondola in the back is devoted to sci-fi kits.
