View Full Version : TC3 Oval Graphite Chassis Conversion
Tornado_Racing 03-22-2004, 04:53 PM Hey PEPE,
We are up to any challange. We are gonna only run the car 2 wheel drive the first week out anyway. If you wanna get spanked by a touring car, fine by me................lol lol lol.
Brooks is correct though, we need to run with other touring cars because the races are longer.
You are correct as this class may turn out to be big. This chassis is a full blown oval only chassis with lots of thought and design.
Keep the comments coming guys, we really want to know what ya'll think.
BRDRACING 03-22-2004, 05:21 PM Pepe, We will let you know what we want to race after we get the car on the track! That way we are not in the way or just blowing away a field!
Brooks
katf1sh 03-22-2004, 05:59 PM if mr. novak would like to pony up about 30 brushless systems for the shootout so we can use them all weekend long i'm all for it! heck the noval sedan oval challenge has a nice ring to it? i'm thinking it would be a pre entry race only and he could send the exact amount of brushless crap and racers signed up.. i want another shot at mr. world class eugene ryder...he he he
Tornado_Racing 03-22-2004, 06:02 PM Kat.............
You so funny. Me and Brooks want you buddy. Brooks said he would spot you a lap and still spank that AZZ...............
LOL LOL LOL
HMM! I see, weight the big disadvantage here. This whole thing just looks interesting,I remember when someone tried a four shock pan car, just didn't work out, that's what got me thinking.
jbm38 03-22-2004, 10:52 PM Is this available yet??
Tornado_Racing 03-23-2004, 06:33 AM The kit may be available as early as Monday. I have 2 kits paid for and another 6 on back order.
BRDRACING 03-23-2004, 09:01 AM Kat, I am glad Tony can speak for me! His mouth can move faster then most of his cars! LOL Tony do you have any flip flops for me! LOL That should make me fast! HEHEHE :jest:
Tornado_Racing 03-23-2004, 09:39 AM Brooks..............U so funny. I will look for the flip flop today. You said "jellies" correct?
Tornado_Racing 03-24-2004, 07:15 PM Payment has been received on 3 kits. They may be cut as soon as Monday. All paid orders will be shipped first.
We will be debuting the car at the ARCOR Open, then racing it in Easley, SC on caps through out the summer.
Phillip "flipper" Harwood will also be running the TC3 Oval car along with us in Easley.
As soon as I get the car back I will install the radio gear and all of the other parts that have arrived this week, and then post some pics.
I have some really big news to spill out, but for right know I have to keep it hush hush. (big things to come)
If you guys are interested in a kit drop me an e-mail as 6 orders are pending.

Tornado_Racing 03-25-2004, 07:17 AM Some guys have asked why do we need 7 degree kick on the nose and why 0 degree toe in the rear. Here is why:
..."Front 7 degree kick"...
The stock front kick up is 3 degrees. This gives you a 3 degree caster at the wheel (with 0 degree caster blocks). By installing 7 degrees of front kick, now you have 7 degrees of caster at the wheel (along with a 0 degree caster block). If you want to put the caster back at 3 degrees use an Associated 4 degree caster block and reverse it. Take the 4 degree block from the RF and install it on the LF. with a seven degree kick you can also install 0, 2, 4, and 6 degree caster blocks. Here is a chart:
"7 degree kick"
0 degree caster block = 7 degree total caster
2 degree caster block = 9 degree total caster
4 degree caster block = 11 degree total caster
6 degree caster block = 13 degree total caster
6 degree caster block reversed = 1 degree total caster
4 degree caster block reversed = 3 degree total caster
2 degree caster block reversed = 5 degree total caster
..."0 degree rear toe"...
The stock TC3 rear toe in is 3 degrees. For oval racing that will just slow you down. So we decided to go with the 0 degree rear toe. Again there are different hub carriers that can add small amounts of toes instead of the stock 3 degrees. Here is a chart:
"0 degree rear toe"
0 degree Hubs = 0 degree toe
.5 degree hubs = .5 degree toe
1 degree hubs = 1 degree toe
1.5 degree hubs = 1.5 degree toe
I hope this answers alot of your questions. As soon as we can run the car and find a good base line set up, we will post it here as let you guys know.
Tornado_Racing 03-28-2004, 09:07 AM Well we ran the TC3 Oval car for the first time last night at Sandhills. the first couple of runs we have a quad mag 19 turn in at 12 degrees of timing. We geared it at a 98/55 and the car was smokin'.
We messed with alot of springs and swaybars to try to get it hooked up, but tires selection was getting the best of us. We had Double Pinks on the rear, Purple on the LF, and a PurpleOrange on the RF. We had a lot of trouble getting the rear to just hook up. Next week at the ARCOR Open we will have a much better tire selection.
This is what we had for springs
:
35.0lb spring on the RF
12.0lb spring on the LF
25.0lb spring on the LR
14.5lb spring on the RR
.078 swaybar front
.063 swaybar rear
This setup made the car very drivable but we were scrubbing way too much speed through the corners. We will have some "Banked Tires" for next week.
RF Triple Blue
LF Silver
RR Black
LR White
This tire set up should plant the rear and allow us to run a softer RF/LR spring. With the big "rock" spring we had on the RF the car seemed to hop a bit down the straightaway. With the right tires we can chage the spring rates and eliminate the hop.
Steve Downs, Mike Russell, and Brooks Derting all drove the car. I will see if they can post some info on how the car drove.
Tornado_Racing 03-28-2004, 09:26 AM Here are a couple of pics.
Mike Wilson 03-28-2004, 09:30 AM This car looked awesome last night. Definitely lookin to get one for some carpet racing next season. Tony, You goin back to Sandhills any next month? Will bring that Assassin with me if you are. Have fun at the Open boys.
Tornado_Racing 03-28-2004, 10:27 AM Hey Mike,
I do not think we will be back to Sandhills this season. We are gonna run the Touring Car down in Easley this summer. We will be at Sandhills once a month this summer so I can run their off-road program but no oval until next season.
I was hoping McLin would be their this weekend so he could wheel the car a few laps. We did run the car in open mod twice. We ran a KC 9x1 with a 104/32 gear. Had plenty of runtime and may be able to gear up another tooth.
Just to let everyone know we did not run the car as 4wheel but 2 wheeldrive.
Mike Wilson 03-28-2004, 10:29 AM Good luck with it in Easley. Will get with ya sometime to show ya the car then. Later

Mike I talked to Tony Last night and I think we will be back down to do some testing on BSR tires!
Brooks
burbs 04-04-2004, 06:32 PM whats the current scoop on this kit... it looks nice
I think that TC cars on a oval are great, the only problem is getting the gear ratio low enough, so if you can figure a way to get the diffs to 1 to 1 or close to it then you might be able to gear them for the bigger tracks. Here in So. Cal we have a Veledrome that is 890' and to run stock you have to get lower then the diff ratio that the TC3 has. So if you can get the ratio lower that would be something to consider.
burbs 04-07-2004, 10:09 PM u should be able to get a super small spur and big pinion on it... remember toruing cars are a heck of alot more heavy then pan cars.. so they will need a higher ratio.... i have run touring oval with very low ratios and they are just plain to low.... the motor gets super hot and it isnt right... most touring tc3's will not be run on velo type tracks they will be run on carpet or slightly bigger ovals..... a 1 to 1 ratio is not needed for that type of racing....
if u want fast speeds try mod... associated did a speed run with a basically stock tc3. chassis and they were upwards of 90+ MPH... remeber also these are not pan cars. and will not be as fast... it is a different class, not meant to compete with pan cars....
this is my opinion on it anyone else feel how i do?????? see yah
Mike Wilson 04-07-2004, 11:09 PM I'm pickin up what your puttin down, Burbs.
burbs 04-07-2004, 11:38 PM mike im missing what u mean??? puttin down?????
Tornado_Racing 04-08-2004, 07:01 AM We are still gonna do some more testing before we release the Touring Oval Chassis. I am gonna make some big chassis changes to see if we can button the car down on banked tracks. We are having some trouble with the car getting loose off the corners, but with only 1 degree rear toe in open mod. I am gonna add 3 degree rear toe and see if that plants the car. That is what the stock TC3 comes with anyway. We want to release a perfect car. Just because we have a prototype and can cut that chassis again it may not be for everybody. When you build the car and chassis kit we want you to be hooked up from day one and not have to be chasing a set up to just get the car to stick. We have been running the car as 2 wheel drive so I know with 4 wheel drive the car will be a tick tighter in and out of the corners. If we can get a good "normal" set up with 2 wheel drive, then the car should be very tunable as 4 wheel drive.
I would like to thank Mike at Sandhills and Walt at Classic for allowing us to use their track to test the prototype.
I will tell you this though. 2 wheel drive, 1.18+ 6-cell, and a quad mag big brush 9 double, this car flat hauls the mail. Tons of straight away speed.
We may go to Sandhills this weekend and do some more testing. 3 degree rear toe should fix the problem.
Also another big thanks to John at BSR for the blue, silver, grey, and white Touring car tires.
Will keep you posted.
Mike Russell 04-08-2004, 09:17 AM I was pretty impressed with the car Tony. It has been well recieved here and we will probably add it to our class lineup next season. If you get down here this weekend, maybe we can find a better tire combination.
Tornado_Racing 04-08-2004, 10:12 AM I still have your 9 single Mike. We may be there this weekend to run the Touring Oval car as well as the all ne Pro2 Shorty in stock. John has hooked us up with some tires and with the chassis changes I am going to make the car shouls be much better.
Mike Wilson 04-08-2004, 06:18 PM mike im missing what u mean??? puttin down?????That just simply means that I understand what you are saying, alas "I'm pickin up what your puttin down"
Edit: Tony, I will bring the KGB with me in case you show up this weekend.
Later
burbs 04-08-2004, 08:54 PM thats what i thought mike... i just wasnt sure if u meant putting down as a rip on this new cherry ride... i just wanted to make sure u didnt think i was downplaying this car....
Mike Wilson 04-08-2004, 10:04 PM Burbs, No I didnt think you were puttin down the car. Just throwin a little slang. I tend to use that saying quite a bit. Sorry about the confusion.
burbs 04-15-2004, 07:21 AM tony...... do u have any pics of the motor mount up close.. i couldnt see it well in the other pics... thanks
Tornado_Racing 04-15-2004, 07:37 AM Here ya go Burbs:
burbs 04-15-2004, 07:45 AM thanks.. dang dude do u live on hobbytalk.. ha ha almost to fast thaNKS AGAIN
tony i was thinking of getting the aluminum tranny cases.. i see u have some.. how do u like them
Tornado_Racing 04-15-2004, 08:00 AM The only reason I have them on the car was because I had them already worked to smooth out the tranny. I will be going back to the plastic as soon as I have them done.
We are gonna try something really wack with the car this week at Sandhills. Gonna try 1 degree toe on the left and 4 degree on the right. this may help the car drive up off the corner. I am pretty sure we can get the car hooked up on a flat track, but the car seems to keep turning when exiting the corners at Sandhills. We are also gonna drop to 19 turn and pull the mod out. We are spinning tires halfway down the straightaway. The class we are gonna run at Sandhills next season will be 19 turn.
erock1331 04-15-2004, 02:05 PM Tony,
I like the product placement (of the KC motor) in the pic above.
Always Mr. Advertisement.
Keep up the good work.

DynoMoHum 05-04-2004, 10:31 AM So... how's progress on the TC3 oval chassis?
shrabber 05-04-2004, 03:05 PM I Hope Good I Want One Yesterday I Wish I Had A Kit Will Pay The Price For It
Tornado_Racing 05-05-2004, 07:56 AM We are still testing guys. Just a bit longer and this baby can be yours. We may actually put the motor and radio gear back on the right side. That is what we are discussing at the moment. It should make the car much easier to drive and more stable.
I will keep you guys informed as to it's release.
DynoMoHum 05-05-2004, 10:12 AM Is there anyway you can make it optional which side you put the motor on?
Tornado_Racing 05-05-2004, 10:16 AM I do not see why not. The current design is saved, so when we cut the new design both programs will be in the milling machine.
Great Idea........................
You would need to get both chassis's though. One for left side mounting and one for right side mounting. The reason being is the motor mount area would be very weak because of the additional motor cut outs on both sides.
BRDRACING 05-05-2004, 10:18 AM We need to make the motor mount go on both sides so we can run TWO motors! LOL
