they 'extrapolated' the shapes of the Jupiter 2?? several real 4 foot hulls exist, why weren't those used?

Hey AT,

When these become available, how does one order these?
Is this an online thing or are they available at retail hobby stores?

Please e-mail me and let me know. I LOVE LIS!!!

thanks!

I don't mean to upset or insult anyone here, but just how "legit" are ScifiMetropolis? Their proposed line of LIS stuff looks great....too great. They're planning on doing all these J2's and space pods in different scales? Now they're putting out action figures too?

I'd love to get some of this stuff, but if these guys are another Icons-like outfit I'd like to know now, so as not to get my hopes up.

Understandable, Doggy. I don't know much about them, but your best bet (You too, MMM!) is to email them with any questions you have about the company or products.

I know how much but I ain't sayin' ! :dude:

I hear that UncleOdie is planning on posting additional pics/info on his site this weekend. You might want to check there later. Vanderpool contributed much in the developement of "The Keeper" model from Lunar Models when Phil Lublin was still the owner - I suspect he's contributing to Norm's endeavors as well.

Scifimetropolis is licensed through Space Productions directly to Norman Sockwell. Working with/contributing to Norman is Ron Gross. I suspect other people too , but beyond that I cannot say because I just don't know.

Norman has been a B9 parts builder/developer for many a year over at the B9RobotBuilders Club - dating back to the Dewey Howard days even.

I think his presence at Wonderfest will be closely watched - it should be the first "hands-on" look at these items. Hope folks attending will take a lot of pics and report back!

Ugh, that "Keeper" model was awful... it was a bad body sculpt with a reworked Billiken Klaatu head grafted on.

I wonder if anybody here (other than me) got the original set of 1/6 figures that Trendmasters released.

It's kind of a sad story. The orignal set contains: Will, Don, Judy, Dr. Smith, Tybo (the Carrot Man) and the Cyclops. I buoght the set from the Universal online store for $89 bucks.

But here's what I just discovered. About a week ago, I was searching the net for something unrelated to LIS (can't remember what) and I inadvertantly came across a 5 year old interview with an executive from Trendmasters. At that time, she said that they were working on the second series of characters to include Penny, Professor and Maureen Robinson. Here's the worst part...they were also working on a radio controlled Chariot! I own one of the radio controlled B-9's that they made. Seems they had great plans for LIS.

I guess we can only assume that sales of the first series of toys didn't justify further development.

Reporting in.....

Here is the e-mail that I got from Norman:

I’m really short on time right now because I’m trying to get everything ready for production. I should have the online store up in a couple of weeks with pricing. Check back at the site in a week or two. Got to go get back to building molds………

Hmmmm, Those figures are OK, but not great. Id give them a C, C+ maybe.

Sideshow has set the bar pretty high. If these guys want play in this game, they need to do more than tweak.

Brent, I have those figures, they weren't bad at all and I wish they had finished the set. I'm not sure that poor sales for the figures can be blamed on the products as much as the company's poor efforts to sell them. Trendmasters was a terrible mess in the marketing department, and Classic Lost in Space was not a property they understood very well.
The fact that they are now out of business would seem to indicate they didn't understand much at all about selling toys very well.
The LIS figures were in Target stores for about 15 minutes. As far as I know, the only other way to get them was online via Trendmasters or a few other vendors like the one you got yours from. Web sales in 1997-98 weren't what they are today, with so many more people online and eager to buy items they can't get from local sources.
Hopefully the new figures will be reasonably priced, I'd love to get a set.

Hey Brent , AT ,

That's interesting news about Trendmasters original plans to continue the doll line - I hadn't heard that before.

I only have one of those - the Will Robinson one.

I suspect Trendmasters also might have abandoned future LIS related projects because New Line gave up on the LIS movie franchise after the poor showing the first movie did (they were licensed for three movies and already had the cast signed on for the three films).

Throw into the mix the headaches NLC was having over the Icons debacle and the trouble Classics Reborn was having getting off the ground ... ultimately throw Mannetron into the mix and eventually no one seemingly wanted anything to do with LIS and were just waiting for it all to go away.

Checking Norm's website , I see that he is also licensed to build Chariots too (http://nws-enterprises.iwarp.com/Scifimetropoli/Licensed_Propx.html) so maybe he'll have something interesting down the line as far as remote control ... ??

That really would be Cool!

I had to do some real "gymnastics" to get some of the Trendmasters Classic LIS stuff.

They ONLY thing that was fairly easy to get here was the 10" B-9. TRU stocked them. Man, those things were flying off the shelf! I remember my joy at finding the first one at TRU and taking it to the cashier. She said, "Oh, we finally got these. People have been asking about them." But not another classic LIS item from Trendmasters was ever stocked. NOTHING!

I got their Jupiter 2 playset by placing an early pre-order at a local comic store. Later, they sold them from the Trendmasters Webstore but Trendmasters wouldn't ship to Canada (me). So I had an American buddy order two more for me and trans-ship them.

The big 24" RC B-9 was a real adventure. Some of these showed up at a store in St. Louis. So I contacted a friend in Eugene, Oregon...who contacted his friend in St. Louis. The guy in St. Louis (who I never communicated with directly and didn't know me from Adam) went to the store, bought the robot and UPS'd to me in Winnipeg!

Yeah, Trendmasters certainly wouldn't win any awards for distribution.

i got the trendmaster dolls, big b9 robot , both versions of the jupitor 2 playset. one had yellow lights the other white i believe. they were hard to get a hold of . i got some direct from the company. better distribution would of helped sales. they would of sold tons more!

I also managed to get a couple of the 7 1/2" Trendmasters robots. I suspect that these are among the most uncommon of the TM line. I must admit, it seemed a rather strange choice to make two essentially identical toys: one just a couple of inches shorter than the other.

And I got three of Limited Edition (supposedly 9996 made...according to the label) Trendmasters Chrome robots that were exclusive to Spencer's Gifts. Funny story about the chrome robots. I bought the first one on eBay. I only intended to get one. Later on, I discovered that there were three variations of the chrome bot. One came with a grey laser pistol, one with a blue pistol and one with a red pistol. Mine had a grey pistol.

Several months later, I was picking up my mother from the Grey Hound Bus terminal after she had been on a trip to the U.S.. She handed me a plastic bag and said, "I don't know if you're interested in these but I know you collect Lost in Space stuff." Inside the bag were two chrome robots from Spencer's. My Mother said she initially bought one but they were on sale cheap so she bought another as well. By pure chance, and with no prior knowledge of the chrome robot story, she had purchased one robot with a red pistol and one robot with a blue pistol! I now had the full set.

Here's pic of one of my display cases. The three chrome bots are on the lower shelf. Standard TM bot is on the top shelf. Also in the picture are the '66 Remco, Keychain bot, Spencers Xmas ornament bot, bot pin, robot and J2 salt and pepper shakers, LIS wristwatches and Chrome J2.

I have the 11" robot, 7" robot signed by Bob May, Will & Judy Robinson, Dr. Smith & Don West. The 2ft Robot bith j2's red & yellow lights. I originally had two of the 2ft robots but sold one off for triple of what I paid for it. It was still in the shipping box and never opened. :)

Not pleased with the idea of implied high prices keeping these in high demand/high value. Sure people will pay what they feel the items are worth, but if they are priced to high, who is the target?

ham1963
04-05-2004, 05:07 PM
I agree, The price is always set by what people are willing to pay and how bad people really want it. It is called Econ 101

Seaview
04-06-2004, 07:10 PM
Good points, and Econ 101-A tells us that other contributing factors are involved in setting those prices; cost of equipment, skills & talents of the artesians, utilities, rent and other overhead, etc. I'm certain that these models won't be "inexpensive" by any stretch of the imagination.
However, if or when a "studio scale" LOTG "Spindrift" is made available, I plan on purchasing it.

AND come with a fully functioning environmental control robot B-9 as a travelling companion!
Seriously, though, I've just visited the Uncle Odie website and return with very good news regarding the price of the SciFi Metropolis 24" J2; it's only going to be "slightly more expensive than the LM kit", according to one of the company's owners. The two footer will also be made of PVC, not styrene, and therefore will have a sturdier construction.

Norman from Scifimetropolis here. We are looking at a projected price of $69.99 for the 1/6th scale LIS figures. The first 3 figures (3rd season John, Dr. Smith and The Keeper) are being approved for production now. They should be available for pre-order shortly.
Thanks, Norman Sockwell

scifimetropolis

The 2ft J2 kit will come with all the detail molded into the hull; which will be thermo-formed ABS, not styrene. It will include a laser cut acrylic "Derelict" interior, laser cut acrylic legs and a clear cast fusion core. The projected price should come in somewhere around $265. The main advantage is that the hulls are formed using a female mold and not a male mold, allowing for very sharp detail of all the window / door details

I hope this helps a little. This kit is almost ready for release. I am just finishing up the console / seat details for the interior. The seats are also laser cut.

Thanks, Norman Sockwell
