View Full Version : Customworks pan car Curt12 02-11-2004, 11:32 PM I think the letter was from Mr. Kimbrough. CraigMBA 02-12-2004, 01:37 AM who is rob cutman? Somebody from California that you should know. Part of the huge dirt oval/Racers Haven/Revtech days. For shame, young whippersnapper! Now I feel old. CraigMBA 02-12-2004, 01:43 AM In 91 I purchased one of this first production Intimidator. Wrong guy, wrong car, right timeframe. Langraffe's made the Intimidator (a CW car), I first saw a prototype one at the JG race in 1990. A direct drive car with an RC10 front end and a rack and pinion steering. Cutmans car was a "Titan TXO" or some name similar to that. It went away when he and Neil McCurdy went to work for Ernie P at Trinity, and became the first of many "Reflex" cars. It was a horrible car after Trinity got done with it. Too bad, it was better IMO than the CW car in many respects. The production plastic and quality control ruined a great car. I miss the dirt oval days. MK Race 02-12-2004, 02:13 AM The Titan was made by Jim Dieter when he worked for Roy in Quincy Illinois. Todd Putnam 02-12-2004, 12:26 PM CraigMBA: You're mistaken...Rob is from PA, although he lived in CA for a short time while working for CW/Landgraff's... Rob's car was the R&D Hobbies Terminator. This is the same basic design sold by Kranzel's today. As for the Titan, that was straight from the desk of the chassis God himself, Jim Dieter. He raced that when he worked for Roy at R&R. THat car did evolve into Trinity's Relflex dirt oval car, but once they got done cheapening it up for production, it was reduced to a pity... Todd Putnam 02-12-2004, 12:41 PM ...As for the new CW pan car: The Custom Works boys were the first ones at the track and the last one's to leave every day...(I LOVE that type of work ethic.) They'd throw an occaisional burger (literally) into my pit and continued to work their tails off, and it showed... They accomplished the unthinkable in the last month bringing an idea to reality, then dominating the 6 cell Pro-Mod class with it in its first race. Rob Cutman won the C Main with a time faster then the A Main winner in 4 cell Mod, and Frank Polimeda won the B Main with a time 2 LAPS FASTER than the A Main winning time. Can't argue with the stopwatch, this car ir fast...Look for it coming to a winner's circle near you... BEACH 02-12-2004, 08:54 PM Todd, your posts were right on the nut!!! Catch you soon (in a CW car!) Beach wyd 02-12-2004, 09:30 PM Rob Cutman is the man. Glad he is not at Trinity as he is getting the last laugh now. Rob has always been one of the best oval guys in the country and a all around nice guy. They did really impressive alot of guys at the Snowbirds. They will be selling alot of cars. Rob don't forget my car. :jest: CraigMBA 02-15-2004, 10:49 PM CraigMBA: You're mistaken...Rob is from PA, although he lived in CA for a short time while working for CW/Landgraff's... That's how I got confused. My bad. Echeconnee 03-03-2004, 08:48 PM Is there any more news on a release date for the pan car? wyd 03-03-2004, 09:24 PM Looks like early May. Rob from CW just posted something on a thread I read today as to about that date. Billy W 03-03-2004, 09:49 PM Heard they set a new track record in mod in Charelston S.C. this past weekend. Added two laps. Echeconnee 03-03-2004, 11:09 PM I really like the car no matter what the performance is. I would buy it just because it's a Custom Works car. I can't wait to get mine! DynoMoHum 03-04-2004, 08:28 AM I too like the looks of the prototype... I hope the adjustable width front end stays in the production version. Unless the production version is like outragiously expensive I beleive it will be my next car. Arnie Fie 03-04-2004, 10:53 PM DynoMoHum and Echeconee: The adjustable front clips will stay in the car, I have been using them for adjustment recently just as much as the rear axle spacing. Currently trying to put the "shine" on a couple small ideas and add more value to the kit. We are aiming for mid-April for the kit to be available. Wish it could be tomorrow but want to make sure it is our best effort. Billy W: The Charleston deal was my fault, ran three 71 4:02's and a 71 4:04. Jeff Helms on his Hyperdrive along with Rob Cutman and Tommy Smith driving their nameless CW prototypes also went faster than the old record in the main. Heading back this weekend looking for more! kingskippy2001 03-04-2004, 11:58 PM Any idea for a target retail yet? I want to start saving my pennies EAMotorsports 03-05-2004, 12:04 AM Arnie you recovered from the birds yet? I think TP still hasnt gotten back to 100%!! ea TeamGoodwrench 03-05-2004, 12:46 PM I'll be interested to see the street price too. Seems like most of the CW stuff is like $600+ jeepnyy 03-05-2004, 01:09 PM I'll be interested to see the street price too. Seems like most of the CW stuff is like $600+ That would be a good "GUESS-timate". Youre right, most if not all CW products always rank in the top echelon of the RC pricing category. BUt they always comes out with an outstanding product. No matter what the price, we RC people are a bunch of suckers when it comes to something NEW......blue screws....blue titaniums...we buy them. KSG at over 300...we buy them......3PK...at over 300.....we buy them.....even that little piece of thing they call DYNO ....at 800.....we buy them. Now that Tony Stewart is behind CW....iam sure i will line up to BUY THEM... hey again.....this is just a HOBBY......let have FUN  LETS GO OVAL RACING..... GO FAST..........TURN LEFT...... Xpressman 03-05-2004, 06:05 PM On the prototype pics it should that there is an option to run a drag link on the right side. Is there going to be an option to run the car a s a pivot ball car? Can't wait to see the production version and hear the name of it. The Jet 03-05-2004, 10:26 PM I believe it CAN be a mono ball car. As for the cost, Langrath's had no shame, I don't know how they slept at night  Maybe with the new owner  things will be a little less pricy. Later, Bret wagonman72 03-07-2004, 01:41 AM It's not easy to recover the cost of the tooling for all of the nice cars that Brian and Jerry Landgraff brought us. wyd 03-07-2004, 08:25 AM If you consisder what one spends on other cars to make them they way they want them the the CW stuff is no more expensive than any other car. I have way more in my FT TC3 and my GT than I would my new CW pan car. No one leaves cars stock but the CW cars are top of the line with no hopups needed to make them fast. Only thing you ever bought extra for a CW cars was swaybars and thats it. I ran all their stuff before and that was the only hopup along with a few springs for the shocks. Custom Works RC 03-07-2004, 12:51 PM We do not yet have a target price for the pan car but hope to have that info shortly. One thing that many of you have to understand is that Oval is not as large a market as off-road or touring cars. Molded chassis and parts like you see in those types of cars are much cheaper to produce. When you have a kit that is composed of a large amount of machined aluminum and graphite parts the production cost is much higher for the manufacturer. There is just not enough volume of kit sales in Oval to justify the tooling expenses required to produce a car that is mostly molded parts. As far as the street price goes our most expensive kits are the pro-comp enforcer and Intimidator that have a list price of $609.00. The "street price" on those kits are between $390 and $420. The Kinwald edition XXX buggy that comes with all the hop up parts sells for $359.00. As you can see our Dirt Oval kits are not too far out of line when you consider the volume of kits that we sell compared to someone like Team Losi. With the recent restructuring of the company one of our foremost goals is to try to reduce the cost of producing these kits to make them more affordable to the average racer. This will allow more people to get involved in Oval racing which will be better for all of us in the long run. Thank you for your time and interest in our products. Rob Cutman Custom Works RC Products jeepnyy 03-07-2004, 03:07 PM Hi Rob It is nice of you to respond to all our questions and what-have-nots. I do understand your point of view as a manufacturer. I have been an avid follower of you ever since you came out with a dirt oval converstion for rc10 & others. Indeed, re-tooling & materials are one of the most expensive part of producing an rc car from the ground up. But, looking around the industry. There have been and still are kit manufacturers that are small that are still thriving. To name a few...KSG, Maverick, KGB and even the medium size Hyperdrive are well supported with kit prices in the 300's. There is and will be a market nich for oval cars. With the enormous succes of Snowbirds Nationals, oval racing has made a big comeback. There are more and more oval tracks that are being built all around the US and abroad. And at the sametime, oval has become a 4 season racing venue unlike off road that is relagated to the warmer months of the year. I for one races oval all-year round. And will be looking forward to having a kit with a CUSTORK WORK name in it. So keep up the good work....but please HURRY UP..... :jest: Outdoor oval season is upon us  Once again...it's nice to hear from you. Thank you  onetwo 03-07-2004, 03:13 PM You get what you pay for. I paid about 350 dollars for my intimidator in 91. The car is still competitive today. Lets see $350 divided by 13 years makes it a cost factor of 27 dollars per year on initial investment. Not bad deal. Rob, how about letting us name the new car for bragging rights? Start a two week time frame to submit the names, you select one, and some buddy gets to brag “I named that car.” Radical Mikes Racing The Jet 03-07-2004, 08:42 PM And I suppose you guys understand why, and are willing to pay 3 bucks a gallon for gas  We have to get someone to think differently, with new owners, maybe that can happen. All the new guy's at Custom works (including Tony) can help carpet oval racing continue to grow. I'm not expecting them to go hungry, and I know about business expenses, but a less expensive kit will get more of them on the track  I'll probably have one myself, if I can afford the gas to get to the hobby shop :D Later, Bret Echeconnee 03-07-2004, 10:21 PM Good idea Mike but I think Burkolink is already being used! LOL Rob, Nice move on keeping we folks tuned into what CW is doing. I hope we can host the first CW sponsored oval race. www.echeconneesuperspeedway.tk Billy W 03-07-2004, 11:37 PM Cool beans Arnie...lol just make sure if you keep it up that Logan is on a suicide watch.......lol gezer2u 03-08-2004, 09:17 PM A Losi XXX BK2 sells for $245.99 straight from Horizon. Klowne 03-08-2004, 10:45 PM actually......custom works has a sponsored oval race.... that would be the us open wheel championships that the owner of custom works put up the prize money for.... must say i am happy to see that custom works is striving again with new inovations and creations for us all to be able to drive. being a dirt oval guy. i am hoping for a revamp of the dominator if at all possible. and of course waitin patiently as possible for the new gearbox intimidator and enforcer to come out as well.. Custom Works RC 03-09-2004, 02:13 AM Thank you all for your support and encouragement! Gezer - I was reffering to the XXX Graphite Kinwald Edition kit which Horizon lists on their website for $359.95. Not sure exactly what all the differences are in the kits but from the description it sounded the most comparable to the kits what we produce. Thanks, Rob Cutman Custom Works RC Products wyd 03-09-2004, 07:51 AM Can't expect a top of the line kit to be cheap. Like Rob said Losi might sell 200 hundred thousand kits when CW might do 20 thousand. The more you produce the cheaper to a point you can make them. The nice thing is with CW kits is they are still the best dirt oval cars after 12 years plus. No other kit that I know of has had longevity like that the CW cars have had and still be the best. DynoMoHum 03-09-2004, 04:47 PM I paid close to $350 for a HyperDrive SSE2 Pro... I really didn't want to spend that much on a car... but I did... I'd hate to spend any more then that for a 10th scale pan car... and I really wish it'd come with at least a extra hub and/or the ablity to run a offset rear pod in a kit for that price... Basicly if it's got ALL the parts to run on flat and banked tracks, then I'd probably pay around $350 again if I had to... I wouldn't like it... but oh well. rcgen 03-09-2004, 05:48 PM My first CW was the sprint car I think the enforcer not sure. Still have it somewhere. I am currently looking for a new oval car. Its getting hard to hold off from buying one until the new cw comes out. I haven't raced oval in over 12 years. Just getting back into it and I'll be glad to do some r&d if it'll spend things up  Todd Putnam 03-09-2004, 07:45 PM ...My Dad once told me you get what you pay for, and there's no such thing as a free lunch... I have been fortunate enough to run the new Custom Works "Smoke" prototype car, and can tell you that we have probably 10-12 kits presold after just 2 weeks with the car...Based on the quality and performance... The car is just plain killer.... :dude: For what it's worth... Todd Putnam Putnam Propulsion rcgen 03-09-2004, 08:12 PM Presold...Who/where do I give my order :-) gezer2u 03-09-2004, 09:51 PM Rob- My mistake, sorry. HOOPD1 03-09-2004, 10:19 PM Hey Todd make that 13 pre sold if you have them first,I want one as long as theres no blue or red parts on it :D :D  wyd 03-09-2004, 10:38 PM It won't have blue or red parts. TeamGoodwrench 03-10-2004, 07:13 PM  Pre-sales ?? Who's taking pre-orders for it ?? Lemme know ! No red or blue stuff -- good!! Don't need that bling-bling stuff :D Thx DynoMoHum 03-11-2004, 09:43 AM Pretty much the same for me... where can I place the order? And I don't care at all what color the parts are... vwal 03-11-2004, 12:04 PM Is that you skippy....or is that actually HOOP?? They are a nice looking car, have to see what happens before next rug season, may have to get one too. :dude: :hat: jeepnyy 03-11-2004, 01:47 PM I guess we can all email Rob C for them to get a waiting list for peeps that are ready to make a purchase. The more people that email them, the better our chance to get CW cars to us soon. HOOPD1 03-11-2004, 02:13 PM Yeah its me cory, every three years wether I need it or not I buy a new car  vwal 03-11-2004, 02:57 PM Has it been that long? I guess I didn't know that, I will not give you crap about it anymore!!! Custom Works RC 03-11-2004, 03:06 PM Hello to all, We are not yet taking orders for the car kit as there is still a lot that has to be done before it can be released. Heck we dont even know what it will cost yet!! As with all of our products we will not release something until it has been thoroughly tested and the bugs have been worked out. Remember this car was still on the drawing board only 3 weeks before the snowbirds. Arnie Fie is running the car this weekend at the Associated race in Massachsettes. After he returns next week we anticipate approving the final design of the car within two weeks and than the production process will begin. At that point the kit will likely be 4 weeks away if all goes well. Flooding me with Emails will only slow down the process!! LOL, remember the old saying "good things come to those who wait". Thank you all for your support. Rob Cutman Custom Works jeepnyy 03-11-2004, 04:14 PM Ooopppppsss...............sorry Rob, didn't mean to distrack you from all your WORKS with the oval car (what are you going to name it?).
