View Full Version : Carpet Racing in Northern Michigan
rowle1jt 09-26-2001, 10:15 AM Once again this year Mount Pleasant will be having monthly carpet races. For those who didn't get a chance to come down you shold try to this year. Just ask T3RC (Scott), him and his buddies had fun. Legend, Pan car (stock/mod), Buggy (mod/maybe stock?), Truck (stock/mod), Bolink Sprint cars, other classes w/ atleast three entries. As soon as I get a flyer, I will post a link to it here. I am going to try and get into the UP to race a couple of times this winter, just seems that things never work out. Where is everyone racing up there?
Thanks
Jake
WIGMAN 09-26-2001, 06:34 PM Hey Jake, you don't know me but you might recognize my name from about.com
We are having a trophy race on the 13th of October, we race in sault Ste. Marie , Michigan. it should be about a 220-230 foot oval. from what I hear big john zuback will be here along with keith rackner, mel letts, and maybe greg dean. also we have a couple of guys coming from wisconsin. we will be running 4-cell pancar(stock) as well as stock truck, unlimited mod.truck, touring cars. we will hopefully have a good turnout.
if you would like a flyer please e-mail me at jwiggins88@30below.com and I will get you more info.
later Joel
Joel It will be tough making the A-main at your race this year. Looking forward to racing there again. If BJZ comes there is a good chance that Frank and Mike Ulbrick would be there. Were talking fast now with all these names.
rowle1jt 09-27-2001, 10:38 AM Hmmm.....that would be fun! I do recognize your name from the old board. I stayed on top of things on that thread, didn't post much, but it really does sound you like you guys have a ball up there. Scott (T3RC1) keeps trying to get me to come up. And this year it just might happen!
Mel, Have you ever raced in Mount Pleasant? I think there is a guy who raced a black stadium truck in the mod truck class named Mel (he was darn FAST too!) Is that you?
Thanks
Jake
Hey that would be me. I am looking to run a ten double in the truck this year. Last year I had a 19 turn Chameleon and it was pretty quick. Looking forward to racing at Mt. Pleasant again this year.
t3rc1 09-27-2001, 09:19 PM HEY MEL.Sure, stole my motor combo(lol).I think we will be running oval too because WIGMAN is keeping on me to do it.If all the people show up that are supposed to then this will be a great time.See ya then.

Hi Casey. The guys from gaylord will be here and they all run gas. There should be at least 6 gas trucks there for the race.Run what you want as far as engines go.Dont go too big or you wont beable to keep it on the track. Most are running .12's but run what you want.As far as you and joel making the same main,Maybe one can steer and one can work the throttle(lol). Not sure on that one.

rowle1jt 10-01-2001, 10:16 AM Well I am looking into coming up to the Soo on the 13th. Probably race stock truck, is there a legend class? I could really go for that, it didn't say about any class with the X number of entries.....
Jake
t3rc1 10-01-2001, 09:10 PM Hi Jake. Not sure about the ledgend class but if WIGMAN gets enough there to run a class he just might do it.I am going to run mod truck and pan car so i'll have my work cut out for me.Hope to see ya there.Take care.
Scott(t3rc1)and KEEP ON RACING http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/biggrin.gif
rowle1jt 10-02-2001, 11:39 AM Yeah I really would like to come. Is there a buggy class at all? I have a truck that I culd run in either stock/mod but my buddy who might come does not have a truck. He only has a XX (Kinwald) and a Legend.
Also what hotels are there up in the Soo? Rates should be decent, it is "off season" afterall.
Hmmm....maybe you should run Legend too......
Thanks!
Jake

if there are enough legends(4) we will run them if you want too. I won't have time to get trophies for them but for $5 entry we will run them for ribbons. also as for buggy that class has pretty much died up here. we used to have alot of them at one time but nobody runs them anymore. I may have a truck that he can run though. I will make a couple of phone calls and find out for sure. I will let you know by the end of the week.
As for motels I do believe the cheapest in town is the new MOTEL 6. 1800 4motel6 or direct the number is1-906-632-6000
you name the major chain and it is in the soo now. if you want more numbers just ask and i will find them and post them
t3rc1 10-02-2001, 11:28 PM Hey WIGMAN.Just a short question,Are you still going to have the walls around the track? If we are going four cell then the speeds are slower and we wont need the walls. The only time we had breakage was clipping that wall. That is where you get chunked tires and broken frontends.Maybe just get rid of the inside one and leave the outside one. This would decrease the breakage immensley.Just a thought that Kevin and i were pondering. You ran at our track and you saw how well it works without the walls.See ya this weekend.
Scott(t3rc1)and KEEP ON RACING http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/cool.gif
rowle1jt 10-03-2001, 11:00 AM Motel 6 huh? Thats cool. Heres the scoop, if he comes (not sure yet) he might run my truck. I just a purchased a pan car, couple years old but I just want to have fun, the part that sucks is that I have to break my packs apart for 4 cell. Not used to 4-cell, less punch? less speed? how important is gearing?
Thanks!
Jake

thats cool I hope he can make it. Not sure about 4 cell gearing this will be my first 4 cell experience. they say once you run on 4 cells for a while you won't really notice the difference and the racing is actually a little closer and alittle more competetive, I guess we will see next weekend.
also do you have directions to the track?
if you need them let me know and e-mail me your adress and i will get them in the mail to you asap so you have them for next weekend.
my e-mail is jwiggins88@yahoo.com
see ya

Hey scott, we will have outside boards at this race but no inside ones, this is oval only, I can't remove the outside ones due to the amount of kids and non r/c people in the area when we race, also I will be picking up an amb system on saturday and was wondering if we could try it out at your track on sunday? I also have info for you on another system, if your interested in the price (don't want to post it here) give me a call and I'll let you know, my number is posted in the "trophy race in the soo" thread. later and see ya sunday
t3rc1 10-04-2001, 12:31 AM Hey Joel.I'll have Kevin call you to see what we will need to run it.We have a puter but no pa syatem. The one we had was from sands and i dont know who got it now. That would be so sweet if we can get it to work.Yes we are looking for one so we'll find out more when we see you.Outside wall is fine, the inside was the culprit so we all will be happy. Our weather outlook is saying cold and snow but i think we may get the cold and not snow.HOPEFULLY.Will see you all this sunday.

rowle1jt 10-05-2001, 08:54 PM Wigman,
No I don't have directions, getting to the Soo is no problem, I can do that with out a map, in fact I did it about a month ago! What I will need is street directions. Is it at a school or what? Well let me know, my e-mail address is:
jakerowley@yahoo.com
If I haven heard from you by like Wed or something, I'll pull your number out of the post on on-reaod racing and give you a call. Can't wait to get up there!
One more quesion: Is it all right if I bring some track flyers up there to hand out on the events here in Mount Pleasant?
Thanks!
Jake
jakerowley@yahoo.com
Hi Joel As far as four cell gearing at your track I am looking at starting out with a roll out around 2.30. That is with the tires figured in. Got the T3 ready for some mod. I will be running a ten turn in that. That should keep me up there with Scott and them other Western Yoopers. See ya !
P.S.- Joel you still wanting to make that trade?
rowle1jt 10-05-2001, 08:58 PM Scott,
Well I said last year that I would make it up and I didn 't, but this time it really looks like it is going to happen. Can't wait to race against some you guys. Just go easy on me though, haven't run a pan car since I was about 12. Wow seven years ago...after turning 21 friday, http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/biggrin.gif that makes me feel old. http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/smile.gif

rowle1jt 10-11-2001, 12:52 AM Looking forward to seeing you guys too. Scott, do you know how to get the track?
I'm pretty sure that i will be staying in the Holiday Inn Express. Where do you guys stay?
Thanks for the directions,
Jake
PS I e-mailed Wigman, and asked for directions on here, is any other way to get a hold of him?
Jake Take the first exit for the Soo stop at a gas station and ask where Kewadins Casino is and Big Bear Arena is right across the street. Thats the best I can do cause I don't remember the streets. Might try MapQuest I'm sure that will work also.
mel
rowle1jt 10-11-2001, 11:45 AM Awesome, thanks Mel!
Jake
rowle1jt 10-11-2001, 12:01 PM Well I foung a website for Kewadin Casinos as well as the Big Bear Arena. According to the addresses on their sites they aren't across the street form each other. http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/frown.gif
If it is for sure in the Big Bear Arena then I will just get directions to that and not worry about it....
Thanks
Jake
Jake I think you are right. I know it is Big Bear Arena and there is a casino across the street or just up the street.
rowle1jt 10-11-2001, 02:06 PM Cool, thanks Mel! i'll just go with that then, I dunno when I will be leaving Mount Pleasant, and it is about 3.5 hours up there for me, so see you tommorow night!
Jake
rowle1jt 10-11-2001, 06:06 PM Change in plans.....might not be there friday night...but I WILL BE THERE!
Scott, I realize I would lack traction, but I can I use street/low tread tires on the carpet for truck? They aren't off road tires they are Losi's street tread pattern.
Thanks!
Jake

Hey Jake.I'm using strikers on my truck and that is what they usually run there.I have used street hogs before but you really have to sauce them up. http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/biggrin.gif
Hey Guys I thought we were running foams in mod truck? Guess I better bring all my truck tires. See ya!
WIGMAN 10-11-2001, 09:51 PM Foams in mod truck is o.k. but stock HAS TO USE RUBBER. Jake, do you run losi or ass. if it's losi I should have an extra set of strikers that you can use in stock, the losi on-road tires most likely won't hook up on this carpet. I e-mailed you directions, sorry i didn't do it sooner. by the way your hotel will be off the second soo exit(holiday inn express). it is right off the highway.

Cool thanks Wigman! I run stock here in Mount Pleasant and use the losi's. ( I run a XXXT) If I souce them they get so sticky the the carpet fuzz will stick to them.
You said something about wanting me to bring my buggy, I just remebered, I don't have foams or even street tires for it.....Might be able to scrounge up some slicks? Would that work?
Thanks
Jake

rowle1jt 10-13-2001, 10:36 PM Wanted to let everyone know that I got home safe, rained, the whole way...... I'm sure that it did for Mel and his crew as well.
I can honestly say that I was very happy with the race/strucutre/organization. Wigman, I WILL BE BACK! I had fun and for running a new car for the first time and a new track I'm happy with how I did.
Mel, Casey and Joel, good to finally put a face to a name, Hopefully some of you guys can make it to Mount Pleasant this year! (Mel already dominates mod truck down here!) Scott, as always good see you and gang, and Casey, I got a question for you. If your the "Pro Match" man, how did I beat you? LoL. http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/smile.gif You'll just have to come to Mount Pleasant and prove me wrong!
Thanks for the good time guys!
Jake
t3rc1 10-13-2001, 10:51 PM Hey Jake.Dont know what happened to Casey today but i think it had something to do with the four cell cars.It is hard to setup for 4 cell whan we are used to racing 6 cell.Casey is usually faster than heck.We from the U.P had one heck of a time there as always. Thanks to Mel for letting us have a chance in mod truck( http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/biggrin.gif).Joel,you put on a hell of a race and it moved along quickly. To everyone who didn't make it,too bad as you missed a great time.Soon as we get our track up and going i will post here so i hope we get some new people.Take care Jake and we WILL see you's soon in MT Pleasant.Thanx for comming and thanx to WIGMAN for putting on a fine race.We WILL be back. Also,Thanx to Keith Rackner,Greg Dean and Mel Letts for giving us a great show as always in Pan car. Some day we hope to be as fast as you three are.You guys are awesome to watch and very very helpful to us.We really appreciate your help and we feel honored to know you guys.Thanx again and take care all.

Hey Guys We made it home a little after 11:00 P.M. It was a wet and windy trip all the way.
Thanks Joel for giving us a great place to race. The track was 100% better without the inside pipes. Can't say for sure when we will make it back, but keep us posted.
To Scott and our other eastern Yooper fellow racers, thanks for the compliments. Wish there would have been more time to help you guys out. You guys are what racing is all about. Having fun even though you're not the fastest. Keep working on them cars and you will get there. It is true what is said (race with the fast guys and you will get faster).
It was good meeting you Jake (from Mt. Pleasant). Find out what size that spur gear is and we can help you out more.
It was also good to race with you two Cheeseheads from Wisconsin. You two are dedicated Rc'ers. Hope you had a safe trip home.
Gotta go time to start getting ready for Jackson College next Sunday.
See ya later! Mel
WIGMAN 10-14-2001, 09:27 PM Thanks for all the kind words guys, once again I did horrible at my own race but thats o.k. as long as everyone had fun thats the important thing. I wish I would have figured out that I screwed up my rollout a little earlier though, don't know what i did wrong the first time but I had to add 10 teeth to the pinion to get where i thought i was in the first place, and i wonder why i was so slow.......lol
hope to see you all again soon, jake when are those mt. pleasant races again?
see ya , Joel
rowle1jt 10-15-2001, 01:09 PM Had a good time, the drive made for a long day, but I know that I was not the only one so I won't complain any more. http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/smile.gif I was happy with the car, and don't worry Mel. I will figure out what size the spur is, 'cause I'm gonna buy a new one! Going 64 pitch, and a Pro-Match MVP will soon be on the way as well! Where should I start gearing wise for Mount Pleasant with 6 cell and an MVP? 64 pitch (as well as pan cars) are a whole new ball game to me! I like them though. No push, they don't roll and they dont spin out. I let Matt drive for a few laps (the other person with me) who is used to Legend and racing offroad. He didn't know what to do with a car that turned! All in all it was fun and I like the new (old) car!
Joel, didn't get a chance to see your XXX-T. Your post was a bit confusing, what were you trying to say with the shock towers? Mount Pleasants dates are in the middle of this thread, first message on page two.
Thanks for everything guys!
Jake
Mel, I really appreciate you letting me run your motor, it helped A LOT! Thanks man!
