Hey Guys, May 1st is the day for the 4th annual Indoor Carpet Champs in the Soo. I started a thread on it in the "other race events" section of the oval area as well as in the on-road section.
Hope to see lots of you guys up here and good luck to all at the states this year. Nick tried but ended up having to run the race on one of our race days up here so I won't be able to make it down this year. Hope you guys have lots of fun and I might see you at the April Mt. pleasant race.
Later, Joel

Bolink Sprint Car racers: I'm debating a change to the rules for the sprint cars and would like to here what you think. The change would be to allow standard ball-cup & turnbuckle steering rods on them, instead of the Z-bend wires. Here's what I learned a couple of weeks ago: After a big crash in the main last time, my tie rods were bent (I finished the race, but with an ill handling car.) I straightened them out at home, and a few of us went to Grand Rapids to run the cars the next weekend. My car handled bad all day, bouncing and hopping all over the place. Then I discovered that one of the Z-bends was binding up the steering block's vertical travel. I bent the tie rod a tiny amount and cured the handling gremlins. I've noticed a lot of ill handling sprint cars, and suspect this may be a common problem. Plus, the turnbuckle style should be a lot more durable. Let me know what you think.

Super idea. Not new, but Super.
Most of the used sprinters as well as legends that I get from across the country have the better steering system. It must be common at many tracks. I just spent over an hour redoing the wires on the legend that I am taking to Lansing Friday. Not only were the steering block holes sloppy around the wires, but so were the servo saver holes. What a difference those new parts made.
Now I have no excuse for my "poor handling" car.

Go get um, George !!!!

George - Does this mean you've been selling ILLEGAL cars again? :D Actually, sloppy is actually BETTER than tight with the Z-bend tie rods.

Ok "oldguy", since I don't know anyone older than me who races, just who are you

Kevin - Actually, I have quite a collection of ball cups and turnbuckles. I tried loose last month. It's ok going straight, lousy turning. Or maybe it was the driver that was loose. Also, I am not going out to the barn and yank and twist the wires to make them loose again. They should be bouncy enough after I hit the wall a few times.

Rowley - I am saving you to blame for something really bad
By the way, they don't have shirts available again do they??? I know that my trade in is worth more than one my size.

So I was bored this morning and did some math about the number of laps I put on my car, I even went conservative on the estimates!

45 laps a run, 5 runs by the time you run 1 practice, 3 heats and a main.

225 laps a race day
900 laps a month
6300 laps by the end of March......

My best estimate is that my T2 has closer to 6700-6800 laps by the end of March. Thats with extra practice sessions at bigger races, but does not include if I travel to MP or anywhere else. This is all at the Lansing track.

Yeah, I need a new car for sure....

What I probably shouldn't add is that I haven't touched the front end all year, just to clean it and the rear shocks have had the oil changed once in January since this fall. All the springs on it are the one's that I used last year, side shocks and front end springs. The exception is the center shock spring which was new this fall. I should probably do some maintainence......

chuck47
03-14-2004, 04:35 PM
Yeh some maintaince sounds like a good idea Jake

i'd like to come to the next mt pleasent race could someone give me some directions on how to get there again ................

kevinm
03-14-2004, 07:42 PM
Bob - From Mt. Clemens, eh? I'd say your best bet would be I-75 all the way to US-10, then take M-20 through Midland all the way to Mt. Pleasant. When M-20 (a.k.a. Pickard) gets to Mt. P, keep going straight through town past Meijers. When the road narrows from 4 lanes to 2, turn left on Bradley. The school's about a mile down on the right.

Jake - If you'd have REALLY been bored, you'd have calculated it in MILES.

Jake - If you'd have REALLY been bored, you'd have calculated it in MILES.
Based on a 175 foot run line and 6300 laps, its about 209 miles. 208.8068 miles to be exact.

Bob, Kevin's directions are good. You will pick up US -10 (heading west towards Midland) off the X-way heading north at a Bay City exit. The Midland exits off 10 (all two of them) will both take you towards downtown Midland where you will pick up M-20 going west to Mt Pleasant. I would suggest taking the first exit which is a big left hand curve off 10. The second exit (if you miss the first one) is Eastman Rd. If you take that exit, turn left on Eastman at the end of the offramp and then go south a couple miles to downtown. M-20 starts on Main Street near the Courthouse. Mt. Pleasant is a straight 4-lane shot from there. But do not go more than a couple miles over 55 MPH as the road is very well patrolled and the locals are not very forgiving.
You will have a good time. The doors open at 10:00 and racing starts around noon. They have tables and chairs biutyou will need to bring an extension cord. Enjoy, and nice job this weekend. Jamie will not likely be in Mt. Pleasant becuase of his job; so the Leadind Edge mantel will be on your shoulders. Do good, Bob. Jim

From Mt Clemens it might be a little further but quicker to take 96 to Lansing and then 127 North. Not sure.

Welcome back Casey. I hope all is well with you. We missed you this past weekend in Lansing. Really good racin, lots of speed, good clean driving for the most part, and plenty of laughs and chuckles. You will need to get Mel to repeat his "Deano jig" when you get him up there. Jim
