View Full Version : Carpet Racing in Northern Michigan
kingpin 09-19-2003, 12:22 AM Kevin,
It would seem that if you went by the numbers alone in each of the four areas that you listed, it would be easy to make the case that there are three legimate classes there, and they seem very evenly divided, and equally popular. I know that Steve and Jon might like to see a shorter day, but the pan car classes may not be the best answer. I would suggest that IF the three groups could not be continued, that losing the middle one might be the best. Most of the better drivers would probably choose 19t, but many would still likely run both.
Anyway, I remember in the spring that there was some talk about changing to a stock class that allowed no wings nor cutting out the rear end. This might make the lower class less attractive to the big buck guys, because those of us who are duffers would be in the lower one. Didn't we have a stock pan class a few years ago that used spec batt's? That would probably be slower than our present four cell --(not a good idea). I would not like to see the rules in four cell stock changed too much, because it is where you learn about set-up, especially gearing and tire compounds. If it were truly a novice class, (spec), it would be near impossible to move into a higher class without becoming known as Kurt Busch. aka Robert Phinney. If Robert- (deathrider), reads this, remember, we all still love you.
I have been lured away from the sprint car to the four cell stock class, because of the handling, and the fact that the car is not much faster than my skills can control, (well, not very much faster)(shut up Jake). I for one, enjoy my one day a month at Mt. Pleasant. They don't have to change anything to keep me coming.
By the way, Are you going to have some good 4 cell packs for sale? If so, I will wait til I see you. A guy on ebay sells 4 loose gp 3300's at 1.170-1.175 for around $30.

crashmaster 09-19-2003, 02:11 AM Hey everyone got a pan car question for everyone. i will be racing pancar this winter..*scary thought i know* but i need to know what a good servo for it i can use? I currently don't own any servos...*they brake alot on me* so i will be needing one also for my touring car. let me know on any suggestions and also a price if you know it off hand. thanks again laters.
hay russel try a expert servo they are cheep and dependible they have made it thro me how is that for craftmenship
1Metric Ton 09-19-2003, 10:34 AM Hey crashmaster if a servo lasts through you then it has to be good LoL. Can you send me a link to were i can look/buy them at? that would be cool. Thanks again everyone.
kevinm 09-19-2003, 03:45 PM Metric - I recommend a Hitec HS-225MG. Same size as a Futaba 3002 or 9601, with more torque (54 oz-in), speed (0.14 sec/60 deg.), and metal gears, and only $30. Futaba 3002 specs: 52 oz-in, 0.26 sec/60 deg., $50. If you want a faster one, a Futaba 9602 has these specs: 29.9 oz-in (kinda wimpy), 0.11 sec/60 deg., $60, non-standard case size.
George (and anybody else with pan car opinions) - One thing I didn't mention in the statistics above is that the 6-cell stock track record from previous years was 64 laps, usually by Keith, Greg, or Rotten Hanson Kid. Last year, they all ran 19 turn class. If we throw out their results, the 4-cell 19T and 6-cell stock numbers are much closer.
George We had the Busch class a few years ago that used spec tires, six cell spec batteries and stock motors with no wing. Why this class died I don't know. I loved this class and it was cheap compared to other oval classes.
Some guys at Lansing did run a spec four cell stock class a few times last year. This class is a little to slow for me.
I plan on running four cell stock more this year than last year. I will run nineteen turn sometimes. I will run Legend sometimes too.
To put the six cell guys in with the nineteen turn guys would be a mistake. There were only two of you that could stay with the nineturn guys. I think we would run the other guys out of pancar and that is not what we need. I don't think anyone wants to be lapped six times a race.
i would love a class where a newcomer could learn. i have a couple pan cars and a stock truck and also a legend, but i am drawn to the pan car, a entry level pancar grand national class would be great. i won't be able to make the opener i have a prior obligation (my wedding). but when the schedule gets out , i will definately get to some races.
millerman 09-19-2003, 06:14 PM you could have an entry level stock class by just running 4-cell batteries no wings run stock spoiler the comes with body , no cut out rear panels, and spec tires blue or green only and the tires must have the coler dot on them !! these are just my thoughts on a spec class with 4-cell batteries they ran like that at the nationals race last year and it was the best racing there
1Metric Ton 09-19-2003, 11:34 PM Hey Kevin thanks for all the info on the servos. I'm not much of a Hitech fan, i always seem to have bad luck with them, but...money is tight so i will probably go with those. Thanks for all the info again everyone. see you all in a few weeks in the Sault.
kingpin 09-19-2003, 11:46 PM Mel, It sounds like that Busch class would be a great upgrade from the Bolink sprinter. Same motor, tires and batteries, but with a car that should handle better. I found my sprinter was sometimes too fast for its own ability to hold the track. However, I would like to learn more about tires, motors and battery care, and the stock class lends itself to that.
Russel, If you can't find a servo that you want quickly enough, I have a like new futaba s3003 that I will ship to your door for a ten dollar bill.

4 cell stock. - this is the entry level class.
t3rc1 09-20-2003, 07:41 AM Just curious,If 4 cell is the entry level class, why are all of us experienced drivers running 4 cell?I think what sean meant to say was to have a novice class. The guys i race 4 cell with are definitely not entry level racers except maybe promatch racer  .Just kidding Casey :D
Scott(t3rc1)
kingpin 09-20-2003, 07:48 AM Ditto Scott.
Casey is like me. He is a 15 year veteran. 15 years but one at a time. Each fall we start our sophomore year
rowle1jt 09-20-2003, 10:54 AM Well....guess I better go put the tuxedo on............

kevinm 09-20-2003, 06:47 PM ... If 4 cell is the entry level class, why are all of us experienced drivers running 4 cell? ...
Scott(t3rc1)
This is EXACTLY the question I've been asking since 4-cell stock came to Michigan.
So far, I haven't heard a satisfactory answer.
crashmaster 09-22-2003, 12:10 AM Hey crashmaster if a servo lasts through you then it has to be good LoL. Can you send me a link to were i can look/buy them at? that would be cool. Thanks again everyone.

t3rc1 09-22-2003, 09:25 PM I guess we run 4 cell because it's cheaper hey  I run it because everyone else does and you cant find 6 cell anywhere anymore  FAST IS FUN but it cost's money  See you all in the Soo........
Scott(t3rc1)

Scott
4 cell stock is the entry level, then obviously 19turn and mod are the advanced classes. If you're experienced, then run 19t or mod. That's what keeps stock the entry level class.
t3rc1 09-24-2003, 11:09 AM Entry level racing is found in the novice class.Where i race we have a novice class for the beginners and we help the beginners out all we can so we can eventually get them to race with us.They are welcome to race stock with us if they want but they usually opt for the novice class.I used to be a novice and then i started running with the more experienced drivers and i got lots better myself just running with them so there is benefits both ways as far as i see it.
Scott(t3rc1)
Promatchracer 09-24-2003, 12:16 PM Scott you can come down after you get done working on Friday than

Scott(t3rc1)
Promatchracer 09-25-2003, 01:40 AM I was thinking $10 a ticket
I might have a few other prizes for it too
Just small stuff Like maybe a motor or battery pack
1Metric Ton 09-25-2003, 11:26 AM Hey casey that sounds like an awsome idea. You know i don't normally participate in raffles but for big rob, you can count me in. Is the raffle going to be at the first race? What one? I will need to save up some cash hehe. See you soon dude, ohh havn't gotten ahold of Joel yet either. =( I want to put my pan car together too. VROOOOOOOOOOOM
kevinm 09-25-2003, 05:43 PM I just got an e-mail from Jon. Here it is:
The official approved authorized and certified race dates are:
10-25 11-22 12-20 1-24 2-21 3-20 4-24
Doors open at 10:00 with track setup on friday night.
Racing starts at noon. same as last year.
Same classes too? If we have to have 3 pan car classes I wish one of them could be a beginner class.
As you can see, he also questions the need for 3 pan car classes, and wants the experts to stay out of one of them! (Great minds think alike!) :D
Based on last year, the beginners were mixed between 6-cell and 4-cell stock, doing rather poorly in both due to a couple of more experienced drivers in each class. We can TRY to convince the beginners to run 4-cell stock, but that won't be easy if Keith, Jamie, Mel, etc. are in it. IT WOULD BE A LOT EASIER IF THE EXPERTS STAYED OUT OF IT!
chuck47 09-25-2003, 06:08 PM The raffle is a good idea Casey I think if you sell tickets this winter and have the drawing in the spring at your trophy race it will give you time to sell a good amount and give time for the racers to make one of your races. Also you won't be able to put a headstone up till next spring anyway. Just my thoughts.
crashmaster 09-26-2003, 12:46 AM Coolies. :)

Russ, sorry I haven't got vback with you, been a busy week, My grampa fell and broke his hip and had to have screws put in it on wednesday night, Brenda's grandma had been in the hospital for 3 weeks as of yesterday and passed away yesterday morning so unfortunatley I've either been at the hospital or work for a while this week.
By the looks of mount. pleasants schedule wo won't be having a very big turnout for our trophy race in Nov. or the one in April, oh well thats how things go.
Good luck to all you guys that are going to regionals, I had been hoping to be able to drive down there on Sat. morning to race but now the wife has to have surgery on her ankle and they scheduled her for the 16th so no regionals for me.
Hope to see a bunch of you guys soon.

Xpressman 10-02-2003, 01:18 AM I just thought I would pass this info on to you guys as Fort Wayne is about 3 hours from Mt. Pleasant. The track is brand new CRC Ozite and I think some guys from Indy are going to come to race too.
Oval trophy race Sunday, October 12th. This race was originally scheduled for the Schoolyard R/C track in LaGrange, IN, but was rained out. The event has been moved to the carpet track at Summit R/C Raceway. Trophies, prizes and lots of great racing. You can call the track Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturdays at 471-2722 for more information. Also look at the website

Xpressman 10-05-2003, 09:29 PM I just thought I would let everyone know that Summit R/C Raceway in Fort Wayne, IN is going to hold a Oval trophy race Sunday, October 12th. Also look at the website
http://hometown.aol.com/sheath9831/raceway.html
The race flyer is http://pdxracing.sytes.net/schoolyard~summitflyer.html
Doors open at 8am, drivers meeting at 11:30 and racing starting at 12:00 with 3 quailifiers and a main. Entry fee is: $15.00 - $10.00 for each additional class and 3 cars make a class.
Sonny Brown was at the first race this past sat and said, " For those that haven’t made the trip, the track is smooth, fast and had pretty good bite for the first race weekend. Run line is about 145 with 12’ wide lanes. More then enough pit room and new AMB digital lap counting system. The only thing they need is for more racers to take advantage of the track."
Bring all your friends and tell anyone you know that wants to get abck on the rug. The rumor mill has it that some of the Indy crew is coming as well as a Big guy from Kentucky and some bearded guy that can wheel pretty good from Cinncy.
If you need more information or directions please feel free to e-mail me at bjanth72@hotmail.com. I am not affliated with the track just trying to get everyone together for one hell of a race.
Brian Anthony
t3rc1 10-05-2003, 10:58 PM Well well well :D Seeing it's so quiet in here ,one would think that everyone is getting ready for saturday at the Soo  Us Esky guys are ready and chomping at the bit to get there.I can already smell the paragon mmmmmmmmmmm  See you guys saturday.OH By the way,Do any of you guys have any 19 turn motors to sell at the track?B Main is going to run 19 turn class this year but he needs to hook up with a motor.
Scott(t3rc1)
1Metric Ton 10-06-2003, 07:26 AM hmm...no 19turns here, i can probably bet that casey has a few LoL. If not he is probably looking for some right now. Hoping to get the pan car fully put together and operational. New budy fresh paint to leave on the walls...or other cars. =) Hope to get some advice on driving it this weekend. Chat laters. Russell
WIGMAN 10-06-2003, 12:25 PM Hey Scott,
So where is B-main going to run 19 turns at.
unless we get alot more people to race pancar were all running stock.
I got my first taste of racing this weekend at T.C.
I can say I was one of the last people to race at Oviatts across from meiyers.
Next time they race it will be at his new location, for those of you who didn't know Jim had to move out of his current location as they will be knocking that building down to build a Walgreens store. His new store will be above 5 miles away. If your coming from the north keep going past his current location, stay on 31, go past the mall and sams club and go up the hill, his store is on the same side of the road as it is now in a gray building next to a carpet store. If you come from the other way if you start going down the hill and get to the mall turn around and go back the other way cuz you missed it.
See you all on Sat., Joel
