View Full Version : Carpet Racing in Northern Michigan
kevinm 10-02-2002, 06:08 PM Greg: Plan on racing 6-cell this weekend. You too, MEL. This also applies to Keith, Deano, the Rotten Hanson Kid, and anybody else who's ever made the "A" main at a big event. If you want to know how to kill oval racing, here's a simple formula:
1-Create a slower, cheaper class for beginners to learn in.
2-Have all the best drivers run this class so they can lap the new guys 10 times and totally discourage them from coming back next week.
[SIZE=4]LEAVE 4-CELL FOR THE BEGINNERS!!!
If you want to run oval then Lansing is the closest track. It is an hour or so from Dearborn. They race oval on Fri. night and Sat. during the day.
Casey check your email. Get back to me.

Gang, did you get my e-mail with the MP flyer? Kevin, I don't think I have an e-mail address for you, if you didn't download the flyer, let me know and I will send you one. :)

1Metric Ton 10-03-2002, 12:22 AM YO Jake!!
I got your E-mail on the dates for down state maybe i will get lucky and have a day off that i can go down and race with you down there? Who knows though...going to let fate take care of that one.
First of all I'm not trying to make anyone run anything.
But 4 cell racing (IMHO)saved oval pan car racing. Over the last few years I noticed a lot of racers who had quit, coming back to the track. At our club it is the fastest growing class by far. I held off running 4-cell stock as long as I could. But it's no fun running against 2 or 3 guys. Especially if there is 20 to 25 guys running 4-cell.
Also another reason I run 4 cell is the fact that I'd have to drive 5 hrs to closest 6 cell track. (The soo track) I don't think ROAR even has it considers it as a class for nationals. (may be wrong on this) They may run it but I think it's considered as a exibition class. Also has anyone noticed the fact it's getting harder and harder to buy a pan car Built for 6-cell most new cars on the market are built for 4-cell and for extra money you probably can upgrade to 6-cell.
I've mentioned in past posts the cost savings on batteries, tires and motors. Fast guys are always fast 4 cell or 6 cells. When I attend the race in the soo I will be ready to run 4-cell or 6-cell (incase the people I talked to back out of going)
I raced against (What I consider) some of the best guys in the nation run 4 cell. They finish in the upper 20 at Nationals and by no means aree they slow. It's definately not a Beginer class. It's MY opinion that Off-Road is the Beginer class. I think kids get into the sport running over jumps and thru puddles. Building bigger and bigger jumps in there back yards because there friends want to see how high the thing will jump. After they get tired of busting the thing in the backyard doing stupid things they come to the track and start racing.
This is the beginer class because it's want they started with. Seems to me as the kid get's older and a little bored with jumps they try On-Road (Oval or TC) because they hear of the speed. They Buy a car or borrow one and come out and try it. They either like it and stay in the class, Think it's a nice change up for the winter and run off-road in the summer. Or just plain go back to Off-Road. But rarly do you see someone begin R/C in oval or on-road. That is why I consider it a beginer class. (it's not a slam against Off-Road)
rowle1jt 10-03-2002, 04:07 PM 4-cell -vs- 6-cell..... the debate continues....
Screw it, lets just run 5-cell and make everyone happy!
Jake
6 cell or 4 cell who cares. as long as we turn left:)
Greg Anthony 10-03-2002, 05:14 PM gee, how many of you guys should be running offroad according to hock???

kingpin 10-03-2002, 08:15 PM Just a word from the over the hill generation. In 12 years of racing, (I started when I retired). I have tried just about every class except touring car. I had a lot of fun trying, and finally settled into classes that offer fun and competition. I suppose that if you have enough experience You can throw those mod juggernauts into a tight left turn, but it is not for the feint of heart. On the other hand, a legend A main at Mt. Pleasant can be very exciting. I can remember getting off to a good lead in one race, and after about five laps when I realized that I was beating the State Champ, I began to come apart mentally and physically. As Kevin was approaching I could hear the crowd urging me on, and the Champ himself was encouraging me to be calm and hold a good line. Is that class or what??
I only have experience at two tracks, and one of them is now gone. Both of them have always catered to new people. If there were three entries, they would run a class. And often when people showed up with something that fit none of the classes, they would allow them into the closest class possible.
The difference between 4 and 6 cell pans may be great or small, I do not have an answer. I also do not know why they can not coexist. If the 4 cell class is slower, then it would be a great place for newbies to start in, or for old fogies to attempt. I have tried on more than one occasion to run 6 cell pan. I was ok if there were three or more heats. Getting into a main with real drivers was a panic. I hope that six cell pan continues, because one of the highlights of my racing experience is to sit in awe of those guys who used to be the Woods team, and now seem to be called the wise men. Watching them turn laps at speed side by side and horsing around at the same time, is both entertaining and humbling.
I have one aim, and that is to help the sport continue. I believe that it is in my own best interest to support the tracks. It is my hobby and I have a few good years left.
Each year I try at least one new class, and then fall back to my Legend and Outlaw Sprinter. One year we tried 12th scale pans with outlaw sprint body/wings, and 4 cell mods. The equipment I took to the track with me included a vacuum cleaner so that I could collect all of the parts that I had changed into missiles.
I suppose a healthy discussion has some merit, as long as we remember that making our point is our aim, and not destroying the opposition. I will have been married 42 years next month, and I have learned that lesson well.
And as for you Jake. I started this diatribe with the fact that I have never tried TC, Well guess what I have coming in the mail....TC3.

Jake, I do it all!!! Tamiya races, 1/12th and tc roadcourse, busch and another car in oval (it still isn't set up for this weekend, I don't know who's running what....) and Mars, 4 classes.... It's all good brother!
the only difference is, when I go somewhere to race, I know what class/classes everyone is racing, execpt oval, that's my gripe....
:) :) :) :) :)
My ear medicine makes me happy
rowle1jt 10-04-2002, 09:50 AM Greg, my message may have been a little harsh, maybe I took it the wrong way, I don't know. It just kinda rubbed me wrong, I have been called a beginner before by people that did have bad intentions. I'm the ripe old age of 22 and I have been racing for 10+ years already in my life. No hard feelings.
As for you Kingpin: Welcome back to society, I was begining to think that those grandsons of your's had finally taken you over the edge! :D Yeah I give you credit, you do try new stuff each year, so when we go to the soo this year you'll run Touring Car with me won't you? Being that we both have SUPERIOR touring cars (belt-less) than most of the guys up there we should be able to clean house. Especially if you run that "stock" motor you ran in Mount Pleasant in pan car..... As an FYI I won't be at the first race of Jons this year, that is the same day as the MARS banquet. Cheap buffet and the chance to win prizes, why didn't I start racing MARS sooner? LoL
As for the rest of you, I got an idea brewing in my head.....gotta talk to a few people about it first, but if it happens or I can get it going.....it will be REAL cool......

I don't race oval as much as I use to but when I do I like to consider it practice for big races that we attend, and they are four cell stock, nineteen turn and mod. For all practical purposes the entire country has switched to four cell racing. When they all got done with the debates they discovered that four cell is plenty competitive and way cheaper. Lots of guys I know, especially in the south and east, don't even have six cell packs anymore. Four cell 19 turn is about the same speed and six cell stock, and four cell mod is a blast.
I also agree that racing with the biggest group is the most fun , no matter how many cell you use!

It's all good brother!!! Just read my profile on here... you should know how much I joke around after pitting accross from eachother at the oval States last year... :D you running sat and sun in Lansing????
rowle1jt 10-04-2002, 09:58 AM Originally posted by Ted Flack I also agree that racing with the biggest group is the most fun , no matter how many cell you use!Ted [/B] Bingo! Thank you Ted, you hit the nail on head. I will race what is popular (I bought a touring car didn't I?) But at the same time, every one still has a favorite class. I guess this just proves that Michigan in is different, we are the last state to be consistently running 6-cell...

James Hanson 10-04-2002, 10:42 AM Howdey again boys. Nice to see you are still alive Ted. I have not heard anything from you lately. As for the 6 cell 4 cell debate..........People can run what they enjoy. I ran 4 cell stock for the first time a couple weeks ago and loved evey minute of it. out of 13 guys, there was about a 3 lap differance from 1st place to last. It was ez on tires and really competative. I do not have any 6 cell packs put togethor right now. I plan on running 4 cell in Mount Pleasant this winter and that is what we are running in Traverse City as well. John Sparks and myself went down to Alkart Indiana last firday to run oval. It is a tiny little track. All they run is 6 cell stock and 6 cel mod. To give you an idea of the size, the racing line was 110 feet. It was a lot of fun though. It is time for me to get to class so I will see you all at the track soon.
Greg Anthony 10-04-2002, 11:02 AM oh, duh, I think it was from MARS then... do you remember at Litchfield the guys riding around the track on teh tractor at midnight drinking certain beverages?? that was me! :dude:
Greg Anthony 10-04-2002, 11:14 AM hey, as KevinM woudl say,

1Metric Ton 10-04-2002, 11:38 AM Hey Jake "old man of 22" hehehe:D I don't think you are going to beat is "belt" guys here in the Soo. Remember if you do after the races our "belts" can be used as weapons....Like the one your dad used to use on you when you where bad LoL :dude: See you at the race, it's just to bad that you didn't buy a GOOD touring car. Just remember with all the classes that casey will be running in Team hack should be in every class LoL. J/K with team hack LoL Looking to have a good time and learn alot from the more experienced touring guru's. I want to do good this year in TC. So i am going to be asking ALOT of questions to everyone that will be racing TC in the Soo. Hey jake I have ALL of friday off the day before the race in the Soo what time you going to be up so we can hang out and PRACITEC? What are you running this year? You ran a Woods (x-15e?) last year right? 110 feet, that must be a little smaller than Jons cafeteria track? LoL Were you running 10th scale or the BRP 18th's? LoL

Sure 4-cell is cheaper and your car has to be set up better. Do you think if (when?) Michigan eventually changes over to 4-cell that the guys that win each week will be different? I think not, no matter what, it will still be the SAME GUYS winning. I'm not saying that is bad, it just goes to show that what ever is run it will be the same guys winning. Even if I ran the best 6-cell pack money could buy, most guys could beat me with a 4-cell car. I haven't been racing pan long enough to learn all the secrets about set up and such. In the end I really don't care what we run, as long as it doens't do to the class what it is doing right now. If this continues the way it has for last month and a half, pan car racing WILL die in the state of Michigan!
When I'm racing I try to stay out of the way, knowing full well that I will get lapped. Will those guys still lap me if we are running 4-cell? Sure they will, and probably faster because I can't and won't afford $100.00 battery packs. With 4-cell your motor has to be perfect, or your off pace. Your batteriers have to be the best available, or your off pace. Your car setup has to perfect, or guess what? You'll be off pace. (If I get any slower and any less competitive there will be a Woods X-15 for sale on the boads, cheap!) Now I'll need a dyno, just to have a good motor. Whats next, a magnet zapper? A battery Zapper after that? Hell I'd rather spend my money on someone that will make my car go faster, then all I'd have to do is drive it.
In all honesty I wish ROAR region 5 would step in and try and do something before all this finger wagging and "I won't race there because they run 6/4 cell!" kills pan car. Gee won't it be thrilling to race Touring Cars around an oval.....on 4-cells. LoL :D
Don't get me wrong, I really don't care what we run in the end, as long as everyone runs the same thing. I will be slow either way, I just wish all this mud-slinging and finger pointing would end before it kills pancar here in Michigan. For those of you that don't know, FYI: it's already hurt Michigans pan car class.
Jake "I'll be slow either way" Rowley
jakerowley@yahoo.com I posted this in the Michigan Oval Racers Thread, but by cut and pasting it, I don't have to repost it. But I figured you might as well all read it too, that way you know where I stand. :D

Listen guys
The reason i like to run and watch people run the 4-cell class is, Becasue it let's you see what the car is doing if you are less experienced. Instead of driving a line that looks like a moth layed it out, You get control of power. ALL YOUR MISSING IS ACCELERATION FROM A STANDING START if this is what appeals to you then you should be drag racing. Going fast is one thing but if you have to slam on the brakes or punt 2 other cars over the wall then it's not worth the speed. Haven'nt any of you guys heard the R/C slogan of "GO SLOWER TO GO FASTER " it's what is saving oval. From not having balsitic speed from the straightaway you have to work on corner speed to maintain your quickness. No major batteries and supper motors are needed. Some of the Races I've won at the Tri-Clone with didn't have more than a 57 for power on a fantom. My cell are 3000's and power of 1.12 at 30 amps Nothing special. every week our local racers are getting better and faster at it. they are having more fun form a accomplish mark, spending less and finishing races. Can't beat that.
ROAR has steped in on the matter and doesn't reconize the 6-cell class as a oval class. It's usually run as a exibition class. Anyone with questions can e-mail Kenny@team1rc.com He is on the Oval committe for ROAR and is region director for Reg 5. At the Carpet regionals in milwaukee. 6-cell is not ewven offered as a exibition class.
