View Full Version : Carpet Racing in Northern Michigan
THANKS
That's a shame. But this way atleast you have the market cornered.
Yes the Tri-Clone we are enjoying a lot. Goingto fix Perry's car tonight from last tuesday. Did you order your caps tires yet.
if not check out rc4less.com. The track doesn't sell caps. tomuch over head to keep. Once the car is setup proper the tires don't wear.
I haven't even opened my new caps as of yet.
When you guys are ready i'll send you guys my detup for the 10l3:lol:
t3rc1 06-14-2002, 12:43 PM Sup Hock.Didnt get my caps yet but they are on order.I really hope i can get a setup for the Woods X15 Cause that is what the three of us are running.I have a X13 for back up just in case i have to sweep my 15 up off the track:lol: Hope Perry gets his car up and running for the race, nothing sux worse than not beiing able to race when you want to.Talk to ya later.
Scott(t3rc1)
The setups for a big oval don't really change to much form car to car.
just a little tweaking here and there but otherwise there the same. Perry had a cool crash. Radio screwed up in the short chute and hit the wall straight outta turn 3. Whatta mess hit so hard he bend the king pin to 45 deg, popped his shocks apart. Broke bumpers, read body posts. Only the stuff I know til it arrives at myu house tonight:eek:
Bob Wright 06-16-2002, 07:22 AM How you guys doing up there.Heres a set-up for the x-15 that will get you close at the Triclone.Run the car short and narrow with a Bolink Monte Carlo and a Buds wing mounted on the POD.Front springs red Wolfe springs on both sides with a little silicone grease on the king pins for dampening. In the rear use Associated side shocks with 40 wt oil and a blue spring on the right and a silver on the right.Delta center shock with 25 or 30 wt oil and a blue or white spring.left side tires green L prolites and right side tires L blue net on the front and a Blue R net on the rear. We're racing this Saturday night June 22 track opens at 8 Am racing at 7 pm.Check out the web site for som pics. http://www.triclone.com/home.asp
Hockrc10l3 06-16-2002, 12:27 PM Well there it comes. The 22nd is a Night Race. Anyone who wants to run Regionals Should try and get there for this Saturday. It will offer the most practice time before racing. A whole day of Practice and then a night of racing 3 quailifiers and a main. There is nothing like running under the lights. Plenty of pit space. Plenty of food and soda.
Absolutly a race day not to be missed.
rowle1jt 06-17-2002, 10:44 AM Mel, whats the word on the TC scene down by you? You been racing except for that once? LMK :)
Jake
Hi Jake I have only ran the one time here in Flint. The track has a few good bumps so you would need to have about three eights ride height. They are racing this Sunday and every other Sunday there after. The only bad thing outside of all the turns is it is always so blasted hot. There is hardly any shade and you need to many tires as the track temperature changes.
Hi to all you other Michigan racers. Later Mel
frank p. 06-18-2002, 01:10 PM Mel- hey i've been trying to find you for the past week and even hank couldnt give me your e-mail@!
I have you'r caps all boxed up and ready to ship just need your address i lost!
I'm really sorry for any mix up.
frank p.
Where do you guys race with caps in Michigan?
A couple of racers are trying to get something going near Lansing, Mi.
They race quarter scale there. Kind of a D shaped banked asphalt track. I am guessing at 300'. It is an awesome track but there is very little interest in oval here in the summer.
rowle1jt 06-19-2002, 06:54 PM Mel, there is no excuse for posting at 6:15AM! You either need to sleep more or not get up as early! If you were still up 'cause you were partying or something, well then thats ok. :D
Jake
Hi Jake Old habits are hard to break. After thirty years of having to be up at four thirty in the morning, sleeping till five thirty is sleeping in. If it is a slow day and I am not doing alot I take a nap.
That's what being retired is about. What I don't get done today I might get it done tomorrow or the day after or after that.
 That was me laying in the sun after my nap.
rowle1jt 06-20-2002, 08:28 AM Must be nice, after I make my 3rd million, I'll retire, at the ripe old age of 35! LoL
After I retire, when I'm not racing RC or riding dirt bikes I will do this:

Thats right, cruising in my boat..... :D
Jake
chuck47 06-20-2002, 05:06 PM Hey Hock I think there is a outdoor track in Lake Linden an the Copper Country. The guy who runs it say's there is a track and around 25 who race there. I don't have time to check if there is now but when I get time I'll call and find out and let you know. Chuck
Hockrc10l3 06-20-2002, 10:43 PM Thanks it's always fun to go race somewhere new once in a while.
It keeps your head on striaght:hat:

Hockrc10l3 06-23-2002, 03:52 PM Race Report from "The Dude" on another site.
Next night of Thunder is 7/27/02
Well here we go......on a humid and sticky night, with LOT'S of gravy flowin'.....the Tri-CLone hosted an unusual format of Saturday night racing under the lights.
With the new "southern boy" Indiana's Kevin Koback getting the award for the first driver ariving at the track around 8am, after a 4 1/2 hour drive......you do the math on departure time. Danny Bartholomew and his dad recieved the award for the longest tow coming up from Iowa. Danny claims there is more in Iowa than just corn, and has an open invite to all drivers to com down and run with those boys. He promised he'd school you on his home turf! Maybe even cook some corn for everyone! (ha ha ha)
The drivers had PLENTY of time to tune, dial, and perfect the set-up for the day, since racing didn't start till 7pm. The format would be simple, (3) heats with a re-sort after round #2, and mains to follow.
Qualifying in the plate motor 4-cell stock class was pretty tight up front, with 21 cars trying to make a 7-car starting field. Somewhat of a welcome surprise was Larry Kempfer taking TQ, filling out the rest of the A-Main was Pat Hockers, Dana Zenil, Ken Pepe, Brian Fairchild, Dick Wood, Mark Balisterri in that order.
B-main winner Loyd Davis bumped up to fill the 8-car A-main field. The race got off to a rocky start for TQ Larry, with a spin coming out of turn #1 his race was pretty much over. With the field coming up to speed down the superstretch and through the short chute, approaching the front stretch Dick Wood POUNDED the front stretch wall after making contact with another car. Have no fear though, he was still able to get HARD on the gas again. With everyone settling down and getting in the the draft was working to 2nd place Ken Pepe's advantage and he reeled in the leader Pat Hockers. Entering turn #1 Ken forced a pass down low and taged Pat and they both spun handing the lead to Brian Fairchild. With everyone settling down the race ran smooth to the finish with Brian Fairchild taking the win, followed by Pat Hockers, Dana Zenil, Dick Wood, Loyd Davis, Mark Balisterri, Larry Kempfer, and Ken Pepe. Brian's winning run was a 32 lap 4:05.90
Qualifying for the big block 4-cell 19-turn class was all Corey Heft all day long. Corey was on a rail, followd by the always exciting Bill Sullivan, corn boy Danny Bartholomew, Bob Wright, Indiana's Kevin Koback, & Mike Bitter.
With the cars gridded, at the tone Corey jumped out to the early lead only to sucumb to mechanical gremlins and pull to the infield. With Danny leading Koback was trying to wrestle an ill handling car to track Danny down. Then the first "big-one" happened between turns #2 & #3. Koback t-boned a sideways dead stopped car and lost a lap to Danny. Not too many laps later, in the same spot, Danny and Mike Bitter go together and here comes the beat up, scraping car of Koback and pounds Danny's car in the left front sending him spinning out of the way. In the process Kevin got his lap back and was back on the lead lap. With Danny now handling off the earlier pace, Kevin began to reel him in. As the battle of the crippled cars wound down it looked as if Danny had it wrapped up minus a miricale. With the cars coming down the superstretch between turns #1 & #2 the call was given to finish your lap. Rounding turn #2 Kevin's last chance was to crank the car low, drive through the infield and ry to get to the transponder loop first. All to no-avail as Danny picked up the win, followed by Koback, Bitter, Sullivan, Heft, & Wright. Danny's winning run was a 35 lap 4:04.70
All in all an AWESOME night!!!
Thanks again and I look forward to seeing everyone again soon!
Danny "The Dude" Mentzel
rowle1jt 06-25-2002, 09:55 AM Hey glad to here that you "yoopers" made it home ok after MARS. I don't envy you of your drive, but I do repect you for being that dedicated! As always it was fun racing with you, albeit "interesting" at times. You know like dealing with a canopy that had no connection pieces so we tied it to my truck! :D Have a good one, what do you think of the webpage I made of the pics?
Jake
Here are the pics from MARS Lansing, June 22 (http://marspictures.topcities.com/)
chuck47 06-25-2002, 08:50 PM Hey Bob thanks for letting us YOOPERS know the settings and tire combination. I see I'm off for the August 31st Roar regional race so I put it on my calendar so I hope all works so I can make the race. What all will it take to race that day? Do you have to be a Roar member? I'll order my tires as you put in the column earlier and have to get the springs also. I'll have my X13 there and also my G-force but not knowing the track and being the first time I think I'll run my old Trinity Evolution 10 SS, we'll see then. Chuck:thumbsup:
You do have to be a ROAR member. But you can purchase a One Event membership for $15.00. A good person to talk to about the whole thing would be Kenny at Team 1. kenny@team1rc.com. he can help alot. He is part of the ROAR oval commitee.
Tis a awesome place
rowle1jt 06-27-2002, 08:57 AM Scott, Casey, George???? Any of you guys still hanging around in this thread?
Jake
 HELLO IS THERE ANYONE IN HERE ANYMORE?:D
rowle1jt 06-27-2002, 02:48 PM I'm still here......
Jake
It's cold and dark in here.
rowle1jt 06-29-2002, 11:24 AM It is surely not cold down here in MP, AC's been on for 4 days straight!
Jake
Hockrc10l3 06-29-2002, 09:19 PM Was just informed today to the fact that it is bring your our stock Motors. (ROAR legal of course) This is going to help keep the entry cost down. They as of yet have not told us the Price yet but I will try to keep it posted.
The Race is Aug 30 (practice day) Aug 31 all quailying and mains will be run. A good time to practice for you guys out of town will be the Night race Saturday 7/27/02. Practice is from 8am til raceing at 7pm at night. 3 rounds of Qauilifing and a Main. Tons of fun and lots of people to ask for help.
t3rc1 07-01-2002, 08:43 PM We are going for the August race hopefuly.Still no caps yet??????????????Going to have to try to reorder i guess.Just was wondering if anyone was still hanging around here. Our Off Road is up and going now.We had 5 gas trucks,5 electric trucks, and 4 buggies for our first race.Thats not bad for just local people.R/C is not as popular up here in the frozen north as it is downstate so 14 people is pretty good.See ya all later i hope(August)
Scott(t3rc1)

What kinds of classes and tires do you run?
walterhenderson 07-04-2002, 12:48 PM Hock, as far as tires go we hav't chose between caps or foam yet. With everything i have going on i hav't had the time to test. As far as classes go,with pancars i am hoping to stick to 4 cells, maybe 19 turn motors.I know we will have stock electric trucks with striker type tiresand gas trucks also. will know more as we start racing. Walter
Hockrc10l3 07-07-2002, 10:14 AM Anyone here considering running at the Tri-Clone on 7/27/02 to practice for Regionals? I can get you a good setup on what to run.
chuck47 07-07-2002, 06:22 PM Hock I'm going to try to make it I'm working day's friday and it will take me 6 hours to get there so it looks like I'll only be able to run on Saturday unless I can make it to one of your week night races. Chuck:thumbsup:
Hockrc10l3 07-07-2002, 10:17 PM 7/27/02 it the day to come then. There are 3 hotels within 1/2 mile from the track. The 27th race is practice all day from 8am and racing starts at 7pm that night. Awsomw running under the lights. People last time came from indiana and iowa. Three qualifiers and a main event. The hotels round there are
1. Super 8
2. amerainn (nice place, tad mre expensive but not bad)
3. West bend inn most expensive of all three still not bad.
Otherwise there is always driving to green bay or marinette to stay
rowle1jt 07-09-2002, 10:26 AM Casey and Joel, wanted to let you know that I won't be able to make the MARS race in Brookyln. :(   I wanted to and thought that things would work out so I could go, but it isn't happening. If anything changes I will let you know.... :(
Jake
Casey, e-mail me if there is something you need that I have.
chuck47 07-09-2002, 03:10 PM Hock I won't be able to do the 7-27-02 date I'm just starting my day shifts then but I'll keep trying. Chuck:)
Ontonagon Michigan? Where do you race. Living way up there
t3rc1 07-09-2002, 04:23 PM :D Usually with us here in Esky in the winter time.Chuck has been to the soo with us and downstate and he is a blast to race with.He was at the Greenbay race also with our crew.Hey Chuck.........Wassss Up?
Scott(t3rc1)
knew he was at our race:D just seems far away not to have a local racing scene. I kknow there was racing in marquette. didn't know if it still existed or not.
As for the Race in Green Bay here is what is happening so far. (that i know of)
1. We have the place all day and we don't have to rush out
2. I heared there is a date set (but I don't know it yet)
3. The three quailifiers are reduced to two. We will vote on running three that day.
4. gone to drop a few classes (I think) like the stampedes and stock trucks (so I'm told)
5. The track layout will bet better for the oval (no dots in the corners) and the on-road a little more open.
These are not gosple Just what has been told to me
chuck47 07-09-2002, 05:41 PM Hey Hock I have to race where I can it's so fun. I just talked with the local hobbie store in Lake Linden who wanted to get the racing going here and it just won't fly not enough interest which is too bad. Scott, Kevin and Jake are great competition and easy to travel with so I race where I can and that means traveling and long distances too, oh well. Also we are in this together what one learns the other will hear about it soon tell the others which helps alot. Team Woods hey Scott:thumbsup:
Hockrc10l3 07-09-2002, 10:16 PM  I think it's great your willing to travel to race. There are a lot of people in green bay who wouldn't travel accross town to race. So more power to you. The only part that bites about traveling to races, is the traveling:wave:
rowle1jt 07-11-2002, 05:31 PM I travel to race too. But not nearly as much as Scott and the rest of you Yoopers! :D
Jake
t3rc1 07-11-2002, 06:23 PM :D TEAM WOODS BABY,,,,,,,,TEAM WOODS:D
Scott(t3rc1)
rowle1jt 07-12-2002, 09:19 AM Joel and Casey, correction to earlier post:
I AM going to MARS!!!
I had my weekends messed up, it just took a Yooper (Casey) to figure them out for me.... :D
Jake
rowle1jt 07-12-2002, 09:59 AM How about this for our Mars race? Some one makes a banner that says:
3Y AT Racing
You know, 3 Yoopers and a troll? LoL
Jake
WIGMAN 07-12-2002, 12:03 PM First of all Casey is not a yooper yet.
He still has a couple more years before he will be considered for membership.
Its kinda like a 401K program every year you get a little more vested, he's only at about 70%.....lol
Next Russell has never lived in the u.p., True he will be moving up here soon, then it will be another 7 years before he will be elligable for enrollment.
So that make me the only true yooper in the bunch so the sign should really read 3T AY Racing
See you next weekend jake,
Later , Joel:wave:
rowle1jt 07-12-2002, 12:35 PM I kinda like that too! ;)
3T AY Racing
Now all we need is shirts, a new canopy, bodies all painted the same and a bunch of sponsors. :D Well I guess Casey is already my sponsor.
Jake
paint all the cars the same. Same number same everything.
it always confuses the race director:thumbsup:
perry got a new matcher for any of you guys need your cells rematched
Contact him for details:hat:
chuck47 07-12-2002, 09:57 PM HEY Wigman you keep those trolls in check here we can't have them trying to take all this good life from us. I'm sure they heard God's area code is 906 and want a piece of Heaven for themselves. Which is good but you have to earn it, right.
