View Full Version : New Off Road Track in Fort Wayne
sheath 07-06-2003, 11:06 PM I have some info on the rescheduled Paul Revere Classic race this weekend. Maybe shed a little light on the trophy vs. towel issue.
1st Place - Large pit towel embroidered with "1st Place" AND $10 gift certificate from Nick's Hobby Shop.
2nd Place - Medium pit towel embroidered with "2nd Place" AND $10 gift certificate from Miguel's Mexican Restaurant in Gateway Plaza
3rd Place - Medium Pit towel embroidered with "3rd Place".
The race is scheduled for Saturday July 12th (originally Saturday July 5th) Open at 10 AM, racing at 1 PM. New AMBrc system, so personal transponders are welcome, but not required.
Jason,
I'll have to think about the truck. Sounds good. I'll let you know one way or the other in the next few days.
scorgon 07-07-2003, 04:32 AM It's still going to be an off-road race and not an off-shore race. I need to know which vehicle to bring truck or zig-zag racer? :jest:

airborn 07-07-2003, 12:24 PM how old are you?
sheath 07-07-2003, 12:34 PM Thanks for the kind words about the track. I too think that this facility can be a top track around. But you seem to have given up on it already. Most of the "controversy" has surfaced in force in the past week. What chance has the track had to answer any of the problems? There hasn't been a race run since this stuff came up. They can't go back into the past and correct things, so the only option is to improve things from this point on. The track can't show they have improved unless you stick around for the next race and see how it goes. Yes, I seem to be involved a lot lately, but it's because I want to be. I feel I have skills I can offer that will help make this track the success that you think it can be also.
R/C racing in Ft. Wayne is a tradition that goes back to the very birth of electric R/C cars. I want to see that continue for many, many years to come. Don't give up on it now... let us know what we can do to make it work. Anyone reading this knows how to use a computer and how to email. Do it. Email the track at summitrcraceway@yahoo.com or email me at sheath9831@aol.com. There have been big changes even since the last race, but unless you come to the next one, it's all for nothing.
Corey1701 07-07-2003, 01:09 PM Ya know............I have been reading the responses from people on this forum for awhile and I have kept my mouth shut..........until now. I guess Bigmotor is a perfect human being, and everything must go right for him everytime. I didn't know that RC racing was a professional sport with huge money inviolved (at least in this area). It is for the fun and joy of doing something we enjoy. I cannot believe the people on here complaining about silly stuff. First of all, how much does a trophy cost - maybe 2 dollars, you would rather have a two dollar trophy than a 12 dollar towel? The rest of the complaing is just crazy ! Just be glad we have somewhere to race, because for years up until now - there hasn't been anywhere to go. If you are so worried about things running perfectly (bigmotor) then you better move to California and run with the big dogs - they will put you into your place. And what is the big deal about things being totally organized - who cares !!! Take a chill pill and relax and have some fun. Remember thats why we do this !

sheath 07-07-2003, 04:52 PM OK, maybe I'm just not getting it, so just lay it out for me as simply as you can, so I can understand it....
In a perfect world, how would this track be run??

sheath 07-07-2003, 05:19 PM Maybe we are making progress here. What if the 4 to 6 people responsible for maintaining the track on race day, were to get 1/2 off their entry fee? Would that be enough to entice people to 'volunteer' for the day? If not, what would be needed? That would be the 'crew' for the day. They would be in charge of the track and everyone else could just show up and race. The next race day, different people may want to do it, or the same people, if they choose. At any rate, you would have to sign up for the position prior to race day, so that the crew is set before the track ever opens up for the day.
Just an idea thrown out there. Any others?

sheath 07-07-2003, 05:56 PM OK, now we have some positive direction here. This is what I was looking for.... ideas, suggestions, plans. We have all the people we need telling us that there is something wrong, but now we need people that want to do something about it. If you would be interested in getting together to exchange ideas, propose solutions, and take some action, regarding offroad racing at Summit R/C Raceway, put your name down, and we will get something organized. I will volunteer to try to organize when and where (probably at the track) and who is interested. Put your name here and how to get hold of you, and we will get back to you with details. If you feel more comfortable emailing me, my addy is sheath9831@aol.com. If you want to show up to gripe and complain, don't bother. If you want to show up with ideas and suggestions, come on down.
redbaron 07-07-2003, 06:07 PM I would agree that we need a meeting. ASAP. It needs to be VERY SOON. We need to get these issues resolved before this weekend. I will give it a try.

Papamerkle 07-07-2003, 08:51 PM Your track is not the only one who has the problems in previous posts. I've raced at several dirt and carpet tracks and seen the same problem. Regular weekly races EVERYONE SHOULD VOLUNTEER SOME TIME AT EACH RACE. I do and still have time to keep my truck ready for the next heat or main. The last point series I ran I tied for 2nd and help with track maintance.
If your track had good drainage could all the heats and mains get run on Sunday? Clay doesn't drain very well.
For me I have 3 dirt and 4 carpet tracks I could race at in a 80 mile radius. I enjoy racing with my son-mainly spending a good time with him and both learning from each other. Your track will have growing pains-DON'T SCREW IT UP!!!!
When the rain desides to quit I hope to start racing at your track- if your track is still around. Been working 2 jobs since April-need to make time to start racing again.

Adams 44 07-07-2003, 11:05 PM Who cares if the owners want to race? I am surprised if they are paying thier bills, the more cars on the track the better. I have driven to several tracks and this is on par with any other average track.
I agree that John shouldn't be expected to do all of the track watering between races. What is wrong with everyone chipping in?
I swept the entire track myself in just over 5 minutes. Big deal. I will happily do it to race 5 miles from my home. Get 3 or 4 and it is swept and watered in 5 minutes. If it is done between every set of heats, then that is 20 minutes...beats driving 2 hours + round trip for 20 minutes of outside labor of love.
We all have busy lives. I want to get in and get home as well. I agree that things need to run faster. Which I believe would be solved by 1 person as race director to run the computer and adhere to a set schedule within reason.
Prep your stuff BEFORE you get to the race and charge the freakin battery after the race.
redbaron 07-08-2003, 12:18 AM OK Guys are we going to meet about this and try to resolve these issues? is tuesday 6:30pm good or not? When it's all said and done I want to race in Fort Wayne, but I can race else where. Thats not a threat just letting you know I was racing else where before and I can do it again..... I'd rather race in Fort Wayne. :)
B3_borntofly 07-08-2003, 12:42 AM I think a Meeting is Needed Also i know i wont be Back for Awile Do to some BS that Goes on.. The People that Do it Know what they have done.. I dont think its to kind of the hobby shop owner to make Sick and Rude Jokes about stuff. I gess i can Be There At 6:30 tomarrow night. Also Like to Add Maby some of the owners need to Swing By Hamlet and see how Max hardesty Runs a Day of Racing.. You See Every one Chiping in and helping there and We raced Sunday Evan when it rained in the morning i got there and seen the Track owner out there Throwing Cat Litter on the track. made for a good day of racing
sheath 07-08-2003, 11:21 AM 6:30 at Summit R/C Raceway
Anyone interested in meeting to discuss how we can make offroad racing better, what we can do different, what needs to be done, etc. is welcome. This is a meeting to discuss what is needed and to be done from this point forward, not what happened in the past, who caused it to happen, or your opinions on how much you do or don't like a guy across the room.
I think we all would like to see offroad racing in Ft. Wayne grow, so let's focus on that.
scorgon 07-08-2003, 11:34 AM With all this contraversy about pit towels/trophy's/water drainage/race programs, its turning into a shame. This track can be Indiana's premiure track, beter than Indy.,beter than all of them. Right now I see "sheath" doing more than any one else. The people finaclely invested in the place arent there, or they would rather work on there own vehicles rather than work on there own bussiness. I wont race there any more, and I wont comment on the track any more. You lost a racer, and a customer.
better than Indy? think they need a roof and nitro.
any award for a race is nice just make the entry fee worth trying for the prize. since most of us won't win one anyway.
anyone who has been to rcworld knows that track maintenance is up to the drivers or else nothing gets done, uncle joe just runs the races.
hardesty has a nice track and a big race coming up 18-20 july might be a good time to learn more about running a track :)

redbaron 07-08-2003, 12:27 PM Scott are the owners aware of the current situation?
sheath 07-08-2003, 01:05 PM John,
Yes, they are aware of the 6:30 meeting, and I was told both of them would be there.

HOLDING MY OWN 07-08-2003, 03:10 PM wabbitbebad do want to be part of the solution to the track or part of the problem???? its our job now that we have the attention of the track that we come up with a solution, not to continue to bash the track!!!! we all know that their has been some problems, i have been reading these posts since the track has opened, and like tracey it really hurts seeing this happen to an awesome track... i put some sweat into the track as well when we built it, not as much as some of the other guys but i helped!!! i have been racing for about 8 years and have raced at alot of tracks, this is just some growing pains that we need to deal with just like any other track starting out... you have alot of good points and good ideas, please help us by using these constructively!!! sheath i want to really thank you for being the one from the track to have enough guts to step forward and get this rolling....

sheath 07-08-2003, 03:42 PM I fixed the website. It now correctly lists the practice rates as $6 "in more than one place". The next time I overlook a change that needs to be made to the website, will someone please wait for a couple of months, and then post it on the world wide web and accuse me of leaving it that way deliberately? If felt sooooo good to have my personal integrity dragged through the mud. I can't wait until it happens again!

HOLDING MY OWN 07-08-2003, 04:24 PM scott keep your head up your doing everything you can to help... dont let somebody that has to hide behind a computer upset you!! this person just needs to show up tonight and lay everything on the table.. so we can sort threw it and address the issues...
HOLDING MY OWN 07-08-2003, 04:28 PM redbarron, whats up??? hey what have you found for a good set-up for buggy??? how about truck, what is your son running??? it would be helpful, thanxs

Xpressman 07-08-2003, 08:54 PM I am sorry I couldn't make it to the meeting but my ligths on my car no longer want to work.
Here a couple of things that I am saying in GENERAL from racing for over 14 years. I will drive 4 hours to a race rather then go to one 10 mins away if I feel that I am going to have more fun and run against more competition. Most tracks I have ever been at usually don't charge practice for "regular" customers. Most of these tracks do also have a hobby shop on site nut owned by the same person. Entry fees have been 10 bucks at most place for what seams like the past 50 years. This is the same whether it is 2 qualifiers and a main on a weeknight or 3 qualifiers and a main on weekends. Second car is either 5 or 8 I've seen both not really a biggee. For a bigger trophy race or a special race entry is usuall 15 or 20 with second class being 10 or 15.
One thing that I have noticed with the Fort Wayne area is that there are a ton of smaller clubs or so that race in gyms once a week or so. This is mainly for indoor oval. I also know that there are a few tracks with in easy driving distance that race off road outdoor over the summer. It is because of this that 50-100 entries seems unreasonable especially for regular club races.
I race becaus ei love to race. I feel bad that I haven't been able to support the off road track but working sat really kills the weekend. From what it sounds like there a few people that are upset with how things are being ran. Granted the towel thing is it's own issue as a place I race at in MI does that and no one has a problem with it. As to track maintence. Why does it need to be watered at all??? I have seen tracks stay much more consistent without being watered. With this surface it becomes somewhat of a dusty blue groove, without the blue. If the problem is the dust...hey it's dirt. Drainage, any morroon can see that have the state is flooded and that drainage shouldn't be an issue but look at how it has rained. Come on guys give some lee way especially for something no one has control over.
I've any one has a problem with what I said I'm sorry. I am just speaking form experience and throwing some things out there. I look forward to seeing everyone at the track.
Brian Anthony
P.S. Remember we race toy cars for fun. And we are one step away form a Star Trek comvention.
Corey1701 07-08-2003, 09:10 PM Well said Brian !!!
It's a hobby - only a hobby - keep saying that to yourself. ;)
sheath 07-09-2003, 12:07 AM Thanks for your comments, Brian. We had a very productive meeting tonight, and got several things ironed out. I think we are ready for a fresh start this weekend.
Watch the website in the next few days for a revised schedule for this summer. One thing that was decided was to back off of the multiple 'trophy' races for the reamainder of the summer. Regular weekly races will be held every Saturday at 1:00 PM. Watch for the one 'trophy' race remaining on the schedule later this summer.
As always, your suggestions, comments or questions can be directed to summitrcraceway@yahoo.com.
dynoman007 07-09-2003, 01:55 AM wtg anthony you said it well ....... you guys need to remember that we and i speak of the better part of us race for fun and the total competition side of win or lose ............ i expect some crapola from the kids but not from grown men and that is where we are at now ......
you will never find anyone that has more fun racing rc cars than me i have been doing it for longer than 90 % of you guys and it has never changed .............lets have some fun and race toy cars the track has done a ton to try to improve its status and you guys must help them out or nobody will ever know it ........david hill .... real men say what they mean and mean what they say and for a few of you guys that hide behind screen names grow up and get a life ....
redbaron 07-09-2003, 09:59 AM Now that we are done complaining. Who is coming this weekend?
