I just measured my "Pod Doors" and they are 6.25 inches square. I want to know who's Jupiter 2 is that at the Sci-fi museum that is displayed on the launch tower? Jeins? I plan to display my 4 foot job on a similar tower, just as soon as I make some scale drawings...

Yep - that be Jein's at the Sci-Fi Museum.

How "authentic" are you planning that tower to be ... ?

Thanks! I need to make ones that will work with whatever mechanics I use, and I don't want to use commercially available items. I'm hard core!

Not that I think Key would sell or provide any patterns he might have of the 4 footer's landing legs - I'm surprised at your reason for dismissing these off so easily.

Whatever materials Key has in regards to the landing gear , it is based upon the actual "original" gear that was used on the prop. He borrowed one of the original legs from Jein when he built that 4 foot J2 replica featured on his site.

You've always talked about making a 4' J2 exact to the studio filming prop - I would think you'd jump at the chance of having a peek at the originals rather than "make ones that will work with whatever mechanics I use". It just surprises me is all. I'm not criticising or anything like that.

If you go here and view the Azarian J2 (http://www.lostintoys.com/museum/j2prop.html) - look at the first picture of shown of landing gear and notice how wrong it looks- that's one of the reproduction legs made by ... ??? :freak:

The following two pictures are of the original legs that Jein sold to Azarian (where is the THIRD ????) - the differences are pretty dramatic IMHO.

Greenwood during the restoration process mentions that he has no access to the original fusion core or the landing legs - all of which would have to be fabricated. Thus meaning the restored Hero was incomplete - at least in regards to "originality" - Jein had all those pieces - they are the most "authentic" pieces known to exist.

Like I said earlier - Azarian has since purchased (I believe quantity-wise) two of Jein's landing legs - I am not sure about the third , whether Azarian already had it , whether Jein ever had it , whether Jein still has it .. whether it was lost in space with the bubble dome electronics/mechanics... etc... The Sci-Fi Museum has the Jein fusion core - I've never seen what Azarian's has.

BTW:

If you visited the Azarian J2 page linked above and also wondered why there is really no mention of it on the Jup2.com website , scroll to the bottom of that page and you'll read:

- (C) 1998-2005 THE AZARIAN COLLECTION, Owner -
Unauthorized reproduction of photo or text is unauthorized
and illegal. Violators will be prosecuted.

He has warned me NOT to use any of his materials on my website.

& in not so nice language to boot!

Lastly (I've been long winded today) -

In commeriation of the Jupiter 2 Launch Date Anniversary on October 16th I was working on a page for the site which dealt with the J2 retoration process by Greenwood. Unfortunately due to technical problems with the video file and uploading / codecs etc... I never got it finished in time - it's still not finished or available via the website..

But it is my source for the comments made by Greenwood that I meantioned in previous posts.

There is a 3MB sample clip and then a link to dl the 260MB 20 minute video (that's where my problems began - lol) if you want to see the unfinished page and the sample clip then click here (http://jupiter2.freeyellow.com/video/testvdl.htm).

The larger video does not contain the complete restoration - actually only a brief 12 minute window or so - I think my 20 minutes listed on the page is excessive. I'll try to make it available online at some point.

If there is a lil picture following this message - I couldn't figure out how to insert a picture into this message - I tried attaching it - dunno where it went or where it will appear after posting this. :freak: lol

The 2nd 2 photos are of the original gear legs as they show the wear n tear and smoke damage. I'm planning mine to look like THAT. I am looking into a water cutter approach from a local metal fabricator. The possibilities are:

1. both sides and the bottom as one piece - folded and a second piece spot welded to the bottom for the cover, and steps also spot welded in place.

2. individual sides cut of one material, a thicker stuff for bottom and steps, screwed together

3. sides cut and welded to bottom material and steps screwed in place.

I don't want to have to give anyone else credit for the model I'm building. I may be using a jack-shaft system to move the legs, or it might be pullies, or it might be a simple system where the up n down is powered by a wimpy method, so the legs only support the model when the legs are down & set instead of being able to pick itself up by shear force of the gear.

I've noticed that the 2 opposing sides of the side holes are drilled and the other 2 are at sharp edges. so the upper inside and lower outside of each hole is drilled, and the other 2 are at sharp angles. Also, the front edge of the stoop is angled in at the top. I have been using Azarians photos as the main reference of surface detail. I'm NOT cuttin' the top off or nuthin' !!!
