View Full Version : The MAVERICK OVAL CHASSIS Thread
eric_kav 10-21-2003, 09:56 PM Jake,
Greetings from Ohio! Just getting back into our racing season here. i wanted to give you a heads up. Our big Snowbirds Warmup is right around the corner Dec. 12-14. Grab a plane ticket and come to Ohio and have some fun. The weather is great here in December!
Last year was a blast with more than 100 entrants. Can't wait.
Eric
JPH Racing 10-22-2003, 01:27 PM Hello everyone, sorry I've been so quiet ... work has me slammed, moved into a new house, finalizing the '04 design (looking good, too!), blah, blah, blah, I've been busy! LOL
Eric: It would be awesome to come out and run with you guys! Right in the middle of the crazy season for the shop ... but maybe I can make something happen! When will you personally start racing again? How about the rest of the crew? I know Todd's back out and running well ...
Steve: How did your first outing go?
Mike: I'm totally stoked you like the chassis some much! I know it will only get faster for you as you get it dialed in!
TinMan and Scarecrow: Do you guys ever hook up and go out on the town? Seems like you two smooth talking gentlemen could really wreck a place and leave the ladies weeping .... :)
BigDon: Soon man, real soon!
Hope everyone is having a good time with their racing!
Jake
bigdon18 10-22-2003, 01:54 PM sounds good,,,,, when i get a sneak peek  ?
yeah man i know what you mean about the new house deal. me and wife are redoing a house to move into on the 1st and holly cow of the stuff to be done ,,,,only if contractors would be done when they say be done.
I meet Tinman saturday in jaxsonville,,,,what a guy had a blast pitting by him all day,,,joking around and having fun.

MobileMikeV 10-22-2003, 02:39 PM I found some ways to cut off material, let me know what you think about each way. I defenitley want to try the chassis pic 20, but I don't think 40 will work, but I still would like an opinion about cutting them at all, I am worried about increasing chassis flex to a point where the weight saved wouldn't be any advantage. My goal is to get it underweight, and add weight as a tuning tool. If it is oing to have a large increase in chassis flex though, I want nothing to do with it.
SMROCKET 10-22-2003, 02:56 PM MOBILE MIKE I would never cut up a new peice of graphite there are a million ways to get wt. out of a car and the cutting of graphite is the last on the list ....That chassis would not make it through 1 crash let alone several SRM
bigdon18 10-22-2003, 03:06 PM i wouldnt cut the chassis,, you want lose that much wieght off the car cutting graphite, and the car has all the tuning adjustments options on it that will produce more better results than moving 1/4 oz wieghts around. thats just me.
but if you do decide to cut any off i wouldnt go with the second picture nor cut the front holed any bigger,, also if you do cut your chassis,, drill holes in the corners of the sections that your cutting out and then cut the line of the material away that is to be removed ,,,,this help to stop precracking in the chassis by stress lines just like in car bodys ,,kinda the same theory.
but i still wouldnt cut the chassis up ,, i have used lite screws in all areas that i feel safe at using them and steel screws where needed and i even us alluminum body mounts and my car is 39.1 ,,, also to take into acount if your weight falls of during a race from vibration, bumping or a big wreck and you become too lite ,,, you just fall post race tech.
BIGDON
katf1sh 10-22-2003, 05:53 PM why is it? when a new car comes out..a guy will rush out and buy it..only to re think and re design the car when he gets it? would anyone pay 200.00 for a painting and decide it needs a tree in the picture and paint it in? i'm not an artist and i'm no painter..and i dont design oval cars or have a degree in engineering..soooo i leave those things to the pros...but i do fix coke machines all day..so if you bring one over i'll work on it! lol and to think he hasn't even ran the new sled yet?
jake what up? your "team" had a bad weekend he he he he tinman and don spent more time yapping than wrenching and phil well ..phil spent the day blocking mike boylan! lolololol hey jake nov 28 29 30 minnreg tampa florida 2 day turkey shootout! same carpet and lay out as snowbirds...we warm up faster and longer than the rest of these turkeys! c'mon down and enjoy the weather with us? got carpet?
MobileMikeV 10-22-2003, 06:07 PM I have run the car, and I am very happy with it. I didn't assume cutting it was necassary, I asked others opinions about it. I don;t mount anything on that side of the car, so I have no need for the material, I don't, however, want to affect the handling in any way.
Mike do not cut the chassis.. We have tested with more cutouts on the right side it gives the car too much bite.
If your looking to save weight and you feel you need to there are alot other ways of doing that then taking a few grams of weight from crucial parts of the chassis.
My stuff race ready with foams weighs 37.4oz. it's not diffucult to get these cars under weight..
Look into aluminum screws, smaller servo, smaller esc, lite bodies, short wire off the esc. and paint.. paint can be heavy especially if it comes from a can and your doing flourecents with backing...
i have to add weight at non club races but thats just how i build cars and they end up being light..
JPH Racing 10-22-2003, 08:15 PM Mike: Thanks for giving this so much thought and drawing up the cut up versions! They look cool, but I doubt they would work all that well. Follow KOZ's advice for lightening up your overall package. Pay a lot of attention to the amount of paint on the body ... there's a lot of weight to be saved there, and it doesn't make the chassis flex!
SMRocket: Thanks for popping in on the thread! Nice work on your new sled, it looks sharp!
Don: Soon Man, soon.
Katfish: You're funny Dude! Wish I could race with you on a weekly, well, maybe a monthly basis! I heard you were fast the other day, did you get your new ride out? I'd like to come down and run with all you guys in Nov. I'll add that one to the wish list too ...
KOZ: Great advice, thank you! See you on Sunday
Hank80 10-22-2003, 08:33 PM The only thing I've done is mill the center shock mount, and sterring servo mounts, and the rear motor end pieces in a milling machine,..so far the lightest I've been able to get is 38.7 oz's,..but I'm not done yet. There is alittle more metal to be removed on these pieces. Also the front end pieces are next to be milled. Back to the garage!
Jake great '03 still working on getting the handle to handle this beast you've put together. And I am waiting for the '04 now! Any chance of getting one in December or Jan?
Henry
Matt Kav09 10-22-2003, 09:04 PM Hey Jake!
I have only raced once this fall! I am hoping to hit the snowbird warmup race in December. Eric lives 5 minutes from the track, so Todd, Mike, and I will crash at his house for the weekend. That would be pretty cool to see you in town that weekend!
later,
matt
katf1sh 10-22-2003, 10:53 PM guys a little secret.. a company called TIR or titanium racing makes awesome hardware for our oval cars. they are available through schumacher usa or most hobby shops who carry schumacher will carry them also. i swapped out every screw in my cars and love them! it's gonna set you back some cash though..
jake watch what you wish for bro.......lol i was fast but mikey was even faster! i'm working on mike boylan to run 6 cell mod at the birds to represent florida..so far he has cold feet..if you need lodging info for turkey shoot give me a shout jake! phil could use your help,lol...this is killing poor phil..i can almost feel my ears burning,lol.. i bet if there are 40 oval cars in j ville 35 of them are maverick sleds..it's a damn disease! lol :freak:
eric_kav 10-23-2003, 10:04 AM Jake,
We've all been out so far..Our season just started about 5 weeks ago I guess. We haven't had a chance to synchronize our schedules yet so we all end up racing on different weekends so far. We hope to have that corrected in a couple of weeks.
As far as the big race in December goes, they'll be holding a club race on Wednesday night followed by open practice all day Thursday & Friday with racing on Saturday & Sunday. I plan on being there for ALL of it! There were a lot of big names there last year.
You can check the place out at www.ultraracing.com. Currently the track is about a 117' raceline. They convert the whole facility to one large track for this race. It was awesome last year!
If nothing else you have to come and check out Ultra Lori! She alone is worth the price of admission!
red201 10-23-2003, 12:14 PM jake,
Ran it for the first time and was 2 laps faster than my KSG.
really great car and even better support from you guys thanks for the help
I am planning on going to the shoot-out at tampa so gonna need some tips on the carpet, thanks give me a call when you get a chance
JPH Racing 10-23-2003, 04:29 PM Hank: Spending time on the mill and lathe is fun, huh? I enjoy it also. We're "hoping" to have the '04's out late Nov. or early Dec. So far, things are going smoothly!
Matt: Time for you to get out there and battle! Dust off your equipment and get running.
Katfish: I've tried the Hardcore Ti bolts, but they are very soft and the 1/16 size strips easily. How is the TIR stuff? That Boylan character can wheel a car, huh? We've got a great group here in Nor-Cal, but I'd really like to run with you guys at your weekly shows. I know you guys would smoke me the first few times, but the challenge of getting up to speed would be awesome! And, for the record, I'm sure Phil would be helping me, he's more than capable of laying the speed down when Lady Luck lets him! LOL
Eric: "Ultra Lori"? Dang that has a nice ring to it! I'll have to take your word for how ultra she is, I just got married a few months back and want to stay married!
Steve: Awesome! 2 laps up, nice first run with the chassis! We've got some great carpet set-ups on the website. I'll also ask Phil for his current set-up and make sure you get it forwarded to you.
Jake
bigdon18 10-23-2003, 04:30 PM Stevie,,
have you tighten joey up on the decals,,, lmk something.

BIGDON
katf1sh 10-23-2003, 05:08 PM jake the TIR hardware is the best in the business..if you call schumacher and talk to troy schaefer he can get you anything you need..now my entire car requires just one wrech..the green handled integy wrench..wheels and all..they do not strip and are tough as nails..i promise..

Hank80 10-24-2003, 08:19 PM Jake,

JPH Racing 10-25-2003, 01:16 PM Katfish: Thanks, I'll give them a call and check it out ... I was really disappointed with the Hardcore hardware ...
Hank: Well, we're hoping for Late November, early December. So far everything is on track. But, ya never now until all the machine work is done and parts are in hand! Write one on your Holiday list, maybe Santa will bring you one!
Don: We should have a small order of red shocks showing up next week. I think Duane got them out before he left for Taiwan.
Hank: Please don't forget to send me a disc, or tape, I really want to see how all these guys really race! I know how ugly Katfish is, but I'd like to see how he wheels a car on the short track! LOL
Hank80 10-25-2003, 08:52 PM Jake: Cd will be on it way to you next week. You might want to sheild your eyes though looking at Katf1sh. lol Yes he does wheel pretty good on the short track.
JPH Racing 10-28-2003, 01:56 PM Hey Katfish! What's up with ADX doing up their aluminum parts in Maverick Black? That's too funny! I kinda thought you guys might go with pink? (just joking!!!) LOL
katf1sh 10-28-2003, 08:23 PM easy jake! dont make me sick the rocket on you! lol wait till you see the katf1sh signature series adx kit! woooooo neon orange and zebra striped chassis! he he  any of your crew going to be racing race rock next weekend with us? i know tin man will be there..how about phil? i'm hoping he shows so i will at least beat one guy! muahahahahhahaahha
Hank80 10-28-2003, 09:39 PM I don't think Phillip is going down to Race rock. But I will be there. And hey I was paying you a compliment.
Hank
katf1sh 10-28-2003, 09:51 PM sorry hank... i had hank on the brain? lol i was poking fun at jake..YES i would love a copy..could you bring it to race rock? thanks bro.
red201 10-29-2003, 01:50 PM Jake,
tryin to decide on a new rear pod, what do you think about the R3 rear will that battery hangin there on the left rear be too much.Or should i just go with the IRS set up .thanks for adding me to the drivers list talk to you later
steve
SMROCKET 10-29-2003, 02:19 PM KAT FISH I get in enough trouble on my own !!!!!!!!!!!!!
THe R3 design put the cell on the rear pod not where you need it I have ran that desing before and its better if its on the chassis.,NOt that theres anything wrong with the cell on the pod !!!!!!!!!!I do not want to start anything ....heheheh SRM
JAKE I did not know you used black or the shocks and other parts....TRINITY is useing the same black so it will be easy to get OEM stuff already anodized !!!!!!

just out of curiousity why did adx go away from the split pack concept? i'm betting jake would be interested!
jake- yeah wuts up first HD steals red from me, then ADX steals black from YOU! :(
who can resist colored graphite with black tho!!!!
JPH Racing 10-30-2003, 12:59 PM Steve (red201): I haven't run that pod design, so I'm not sure what to make of it ... I will give a little advice here though. If you want to try it, just order the bottom plate only from R3. Then, get the extended IRS plates from us. This way, you will only have to change the bottom plate from Associated to R3, but you side plates will stay the same ...
Rocket: Trinity too? Man, is the whole oval world goin' to the cool black anodized craze? Maybe we'll have to change up this time around .... Candy apple red? Candy orange? Green? Maybe powder coat the parts yellow?
Josh: Your current red was always cool! Too cool to stay yours for long! I always loved the old TRC cars in red ... Hey, about the colored carbon, what's your thoughts on this stuff? I hear it's a G-10 layer top and bottom, making the quality of the product not as good as the standard stuff? Sure looks sweet though!
I would imagine the split pack deal has changed more for convenience than anything? (Rocket, care to share any design thoughts?)
To Everyone: I would like to politely ask that everyone leave the crap on the other threads, on those other threads ... The Maverick Co. has gotten along with all the other chassis MFG's very well since starting up, and I want to keep it that way. Our reputation is very important to us, and even B.S. slinging on these threads gets taken out of proportion too easily and can harm business relationships.
But, when the serious pissing matches start, everyone looses in the end. It makes oval racing, the racers, and the companies seem very small and petty. Can't we all just get a long and race? Enough said guys, let's get back to the chassis discussions and having fun...
Jake
kgbracing 10-30-2003, 01:12 PM jake- not sure on the graph.....we alread have candy red tho...look at the sniper pod plates next time you see dad (my car has frosted)!!!!!
SMROCKET 10-30-2003, 01:16 PM We went back to 4cell in a roll to make it close to what most cars that are on the market ....I for one hated the split cells and after many days infforn of my turbo30 I found that we were losing some voltage and increaseing out internal rest......
SRM

JPH Racing 10-31-2003, 02:39 PM All right, anyone racing this weekend? I hope everyone has a safe Halloween weekend! I look forward to hearing some race reports on Monday ...
Josh, you guys heading down to Showtime? If so, keep an eye on Dave for me, will ya? He's just ready to get into some kind of trouble! LOL
eric_kav 11-04-2003, 10:17 PM Jake,
I'll be racing this weekend. Can't wait to strap those new batteries in my car. Todd, on the other hand, can't convince his wife to allow him to race on his anniversary. See what you have to look forward to?!
Eric
TinManSEP 11-04-2003, 11:09 PM Jake...off to Mike Boylan's "Race Rock" race this weekend. I know of few of the Maverick guys are gonna be there. Maybe if we put our heads together we can "Go Fast, Turn Left, and not Look Back!!"
Katfish has all of us following him to dinner at the famous "Charlie's Steakhouse" (robbed a bank to pay for the dinner) and that's the only place I'm gonna follow him....LOL!!!
Happy Racing and can't wait for the '04,
Tin Man
JPH Racing 11-05-2003, 03:07 PM Eric: Good luck this weekend, run 'em hard! Too bad about Todd, but I can understand that a man's got to do, what a man's got to do! LOL
TinMan: Go get them all this weekend! Lay it down and don't look back! Watch out for Katfish! Both on the track, and at the dinner table!
'04, comin' soon!
SMROCKET 11-05-2003, 03:13 PM Jake , Can you send me your email address I wanted to touch base with you on some OEM products we both will be useing !!!!! SRM
MobileMikeV 11-05-2003, 04:34 PM I had a good run this weekend. I went to a different track, K&N. BANKED!!! I found it very easy to drive. Much easier then Maine lol. I didn't even get taken out once!  I did a good job getting passed too! Both mky motor and driving weren't up to par, but will get better before the next race.
JPH Racing 11-05-2003, 05:02 PM Rocket: You're e-mail is on the way ... Just in case you check here first I can reached at JPHRacing001@aol.com
Mike: Keep up the good work! I hear K&N is an awesome track, very tough to tame!
Speaking of tough tracks ... Dave and Kevin went down to Showtime in Bakersfield last weekend. Both were driving mod, and it was their first time since the new surface was put down (now a foam tire track)... This track is like nothing we run on on the West Coast, high banks, banked straights, interesting place that can humble you in a heartbeat.
Both of the guys got their cars around the track really well. A tough thing to do unless you're a regular down their and have a lot of laps on the track. Kevin posted a 50 lap run, which is right on pace. And he qualified 2nd in the 19 Turn class. Both drivers didn't finish up as strong as they would have liked in the mains, but definitely turned a few heads and showed that the Maverick is fully competitive on the high banked tracks. Nice work Dave and Kevin!
katf1sh 11-05-2003, 06:11 PM ummmmmmmmmm steak...

JPH Racing 11-10-2003, 09:47 PM Don: Your parts are on the way!
Katfish: Hmmm, strange about the TinMan's set-up heading south on him? I guess sometimes ya tune them in, sometimes you tune them out! Did the track change noticeably throughout the day?
Seems like I've been hearing a lot about rough mains from your neck of the woods lately? Everyone too excited and not thinking? Or are they following your example (flying through the air with the greatest of ease?)? LOL You do know they turn a heck of a lot better with the front wheels on the ground!
86 days until the 'Birds!
katf1sh 11-10-2003, 10:55 PM we can go weeks with great racing, than 1 week we all have a lapse? i dunno..it was a lunar eclipse on saturday? lol
