The aluminum parts just got dropped off at the anodizer this morning. The machinists were both 2 weeks late ... What a pain! Anyway, if all goes well, we'll have the parts on Tuesday, and I'll be shipping kits Tuesday and Wednesday.

Thank you everyone for your understanding ... This rarely happen with me, being this far behind, but somethings are just out of my control. Although, I have been thinking about buying a mill that would let me make the stuff myself ... But, that's another story!

Happy Holidays everyone!

Hi Jake... guys,

I guess I've been lurking round here long enough so it's time to make a proper introduction. I'm 47 (yes, older than dirt), last raced pan cars over 10 years ago @ a 500ft asphalt oval where during a $ race I had my car destroyed after an altercation by a driver insuring the win for his buddy... got po'ed and quit racing RC. After a new bullring carpet track opened, I tried my hand but found that rug and I don't mix well.

After a long lapse from the hobby, I purchased a TC3 and played in the parking lot races until that died out. From there, I moved to sim racing on the computer where I had moderate sucess. Recently, the hobby shop with the carpet track moved and put up a new 375' trioval with a touring car class that I played around with to try to regain my former driving skills. Unfortunately, the car didn't see things my way and left me no choice but to ditch it due to problems I couldn't resolve. Unfortunately afterwards, I ended up buying a few basket case cars on Ebay in order to make one workable car. Surely you can figure how this went.

Before long I began searching the internet and came across something I've never seen in RC racing before... straight talk and help in RC. Mostly from the Swift racing site and RC-oval.com. It didn't take long to decide that my best course of action was to start fresh and buy an '05 Maverick to build what I needed rather than buy a kit and replace 3/4's of the parts. Needless to say, the outdoor seasons over with now but with South Carolinas moderately milder temps (though not recently) and the help of Spektrums telemetry system once it arrives, I'll be full bore when the spring season hits.

My many thanks to Jake and Brad for the fantastic model they've put together. It by far has to be the finest RC car I've ever had the pleasure of assembling. I also appreciate the way Jake has responded to my simple minded questions and was able to send parts that would work the way I wanted... even though I didn't know what to ask for. Also thanks from my team mate and myself who bought a used '04 slider after seeing mine and you offered the manual and help if we needed it.

Yes, I'm long winded but thanks also for posting my pic's of my Toyhooter truck just a day or so ago on the Swift website as I didn't really think the pics were up to snuff with the others posted there. I think if we ever meet in person, that I owe you at least a 24 pack. Hopefully you won't mind my joining you in the libations.

Randy,

Where in SC are you from? There are three Mavericks at our track now,and we would love to make it four.We race here in the upstate outdoors year round, the only way we won't race is if it's below 40 degrees(we still try sometimes though),just can't get the caps to hook up at that point. Our next race is on the 31st.

Pepe : Florence... about 7 miles from Darlington Raceway. New track is http://www.banditshobbies.com/. The old track I ran on was TBS Raceway in Hartsville. E-mail or message me with more info on your track location, classes, ect and I'll try to make a trip up there in the next couple of months with my bud which would make it 5 Mav's. :hat:

JPHRacer : You're on bud, guess I'll make it a 24 pack of koolaid for Jake then :drunk:

I simply didn't have time to read over 160 threads to find this questions answer. So here goes. Does any one have a phone # where I can get a hold of the Maverick 05 OPC. And if  so who would I be dealing with on the other end of the line? Also I was wondering why I should buy the OPC over the slider. Can some of you guys convince me why to buy one over the other?

As for the slider vs the opc, well that would be your preference. I've had the Hyperdrive 0700 and the 10L4 both are sliders and I've set the battery tray and left it. So I didn't see going with the Maverick slider so I went with the OPC. Just my perference either way you would be happy.

Marauder
12-23-2005, 10:54 AM
My understanding of the slider vs opc question is that with a slider, you have more adjustments to make a faster car. The opinion is that you wouldn't want to run a slider on a high banked or bumpier track due to the increased chance of chassis flex which would possibly contact the battery tray with the track, scrubbing speed and wearing down the battery trays graphite.

OPC's are susposed to be less flexible making them a better choice for those whom wish to run high banked, bumpier tracks, or velodromes, also for those persons that don't think they want or need the extra adjustment a slider would give which also cuts down on setup time.

In actuality, either of these chassis's would be a good choice for any track considering the adjustability built into these cars. It's just a matter of what YOU think you need to accomplish your racing goals. :)

pepe
12-23-2005, 11:06 AM
The general consensus seems to be a slider for carpet and flat tracks and a OPC for about anything else, but really it comes down to personal preference.I've tried both and prefer the OPC style, but everthing around here is banked so that's probably why.

JPHRacer
12-23-2005, 02:08 PM
Just pick one and run, it you will be very happy either way.

Some tracks are one-piece tracks, normally due to high degree ammount of banking, if thats your case then I would stick with a solid car.

We have run both on just about every surface, and have never found one to have any distinct advantage, other then adjustabilty. For some its a good thing for other its not.

I like using battery weight to make small adjustments on how a car gets into and exits a corner, especially on carpet. I couldnt see not having that adjustment on carpet, but thats just me. Some guys like not having the ablilty to adjust that.

I would say that its all going to just depend on what you want, and how many adjustments you want.

If your looking for flex, i found my OPC had more overall flex then the slider.. My OPC was killer fast on cap tires, i felt it to be quite a bit faster.. I did not get to run the OPC on carpet, but i did run the slider.. They will both work . It will just depend on a slightly diff setup on each..

But if you do race cap tires, banked track, and stock class go with the OPC..

The Slider vs OPC debate is a fun one. The argument for which chassis works best on a particular race surface can be taken a few different ways ... And I think, it all does come down to personal preference.

For the Slider on high banked, or bumpy tracks, we offer a different tray (the Banked Track Tray) which helps with the flex problem inherent in all slider battery trays. As for the OPC not being as good on flat track, well the guys in So-Cal that I've raced against in 19 turn will tell ya that mine gets around the track just fine! :)

Anyway, both chassis work well in a variety of situations. It's all in the tuning and driving. And, it's the one your personally like, the one that give you confidence.

CBear: Happy Holidays! Looking forward to seeing you guys at the 'Birds!

Moss: You know all about waiting! I've got some friends who work at dealerships, in the parts department ... They always have great stories about shipments, delays, etc ... Makes me feel a little better! Get Brad out of his coma and running his r/c cars! It's time he wheels a Maverick instead of a Cooper!

Randy: Great to have you onboard the Maverick Crew! This is a great group of guys, that's for sure! I'll take a rain check on the drinks ... Hopefully we'll get a chance to hang out at a race soon.

Pepe: Great news today about your parts! Get that Maverick ready to race!

Lance: Post up if you have more questions. Or shoot me an e-mail jphracing001@aol.com (jphracing001@aol.com)

Burbs: Your OPC was always super fast!

Milky: Busted him! Ol' DW is only 20!

Happy Holidays Maverick Crew!

Wildman: Wow! That's a good list of Maverick talent hitting the Novak race! Awesome!

Pepe: Will you be giving brushless a try soon? :)

John: Send them pics when you get a chance, I'll get them up on the site!

Jimmy: The article is cool, huh! I think Erich did a good job with it. Heck, it's just nice to see some oval stuff in the mag. R/C driver is trying!

Tony: The only Maverick bashing is when you hit the wall! (seems to happen often!?!) :)

Guys, remember to send in a note to Erich: ereichert@rcdriver.com (ereichert@rcdriver.com) or to Greg: gregv@rcdriver.com (gregv@rcdriver.com) if you liked the Maverick article, or just liked seeing oval stuff. If they don;t hear from us oval guys, they will not put more stuff in the mag. I know this is an often debated thing, oval in the mags, but sending them a quick "atta-boy" goes a long way ...

Pepe: I know, I read your post on the brushless thread ... I was just pulling your leg! :)

Moss: Ok, so it's "almost" done? Can't wait until you get it on the track!

Burbs: That race looks awesome. I totally like the idea of everyone in one big class. Really lets everyone see how they stack up.

Wade: Thanks for sending in a reply to those guys. I thought about another thread, but really didn't want to start another debate. I know the guys who read this thread will respond, if they want to, and do so without pointing fingers at the mag for not doing more oval coverage.

By the way: Erich is still racing the Maverick he built for the article. He IM'ed me this morning to let me know it broke the stock track record at R/C Madness last weekend!

We're working on getting some of the new HPI shocks in asap. Not sure about any size differences until I get my hands on a set. But, usually, the sedan shaft is too short for the oval cars.

I'm not sure if any of you guys have tried the new Associated shock upgrades yet, but for those of you who like the ASC shocks, the new kit is awesome! Builds the shocks up with bladders and offers adjustable rebound vs dampening.

I've been out running my new opc today and all I can say is this is the best handling car I've driven to date.Am I correct in understanding that one of the front A-arm locking plates is longer than the other .030 or something?

JPH Racing
12-29-2005, 08:19 PM
Pepe: Glad you got the new ride out of the track!

The locking plates are the same. But they are machined with the slider slot .030 forward. So, if you flip one over, you can easily lead or trail one side that amount. Lay them on top of each other and you'll quickly see what I mean.

JPH. Just took your advice. Here's a copy of what I sent.

Just wanted to thank you guys for seeming to have the guts to do an article about a forgotten group of racers and type of racing. I purchase a copy of your magazine every month, the new issue just hit the rack of my local magazine shop today. There are enough different models of cars out there now, so do I smell a special issue dedicated to the different cars and the company's that make performance hop ups for them. You have reviewed more than the other mags, so keep up the good work, and show some more. Great magazine, keep up the good work.
