Burbs: That's a great link!

rcgen: Man, good luck, I hope you guys get to race. But, I really hope for all the Florida Crew, that you all make it through this next hurricane dry and safe.

Kevin: How do we get the avatar? I can use the graphics from the newest sticker sheet .... Let me know how this works and we'll make it happen!

Well Jake the car was awesome....we finally got to race...I decided to run the breakout class with my son plus I was to lazy to put in a stock motor on that brushless system. First night out the car won the breakout class LOL....The best part of the whole night was racing against my 9 year old son who just started racing, finished his race w/o breaking anything....I'll have to wait till next week to put in a stock motor since the FOCAR got cnx due to Dennis....darn hurricanes....

Katfish: Glad you finally got to put a run in on the Mini! E-mail me or give me a call anytime, we'll talk setups! Sorry to hear about your Focar race being DNS'd, I'm not sure how you Florida guys handle summertime .... Too many storms!

Burbs: Looking forward to seeing pics of the purple car!

For anyone using the HPI center shock.....what do you guys like to use to go in the shock end for the bolt to fit through where it attaches to the center shock mount?

Piece of fuel tubing works for me

burbs
07-14-2005, 01:58 AM
i drilled mine out,,, you can fit a ball in there,, the kind from an open face ball cup.. like rocket city or dubro... if you tke your time you can get it really good... fuel tubing works, but i always felt it bound up the movement of the shock a little...IE side to side movement... if you unhook the shock from the toplate, then twist it side t side, you can feel what i mean...

or you can do this.. the HPI shock build kit come with two types of shock caps,, one has a smaller hole,,, you can take the associated ball from the shock cap, and put it in a dremel,,, slightly sand it down.. do this until it fits in the smaller holed shock cap...

Jake, whats up? ...... how mini rosen doin ? ... :p ......hope him and your better half our both doing well.

BTW, Jake tracking storms here in florida is everyone's hobby these days, we all know terms like, "steering currents" "upper level wind shear" "hunker down" and oh yeah "Oh, crap here it comes !!!" I click on the national hurricane site about as much as I do hobbytalk this time of year.

Racing has been messed up for sure, worst part is even if its an indoor race.......if there's something swirling off either coast no ones wants o leave the house.

Mark: I use fuel tubing, and it works just fine. The trick is to use small tubing. Most r/c shops only carry medium, because that's the industry standard for our engines .... Small fits the HPI shock better, without binding.

Wade: Ditto!

Burbs: Until next week, you got more time on your hands than I do! :) I go the quick and easy fuel tube route .... You do something trick! Maybe that's why you so fast???

Rich: The little one is doing AWESOME! Man is it cool to be a Dad!
Steering currents = Tinman holding on to 'er down the back straight?
Upper Level Wind Shear = "pull my finger" Ronnie on the drivers stand?
Hunker down = Katfish at the dinner table at Charlie's?
Oh crap here it comes = Standing next to Ronnie on the drivers stand?

I got it all figured out! :)

Milky: Me too man, me too!

Hey Jake...Glad to hear it's sooo much fun being a "Dad". Hopefully we'll be able to "hold on to 'er" tomorrow. Only 50% chance of rain on Sunday. I think Boylan needs to steal an old "Barnum and Bailey" tent and raise it over our little track. No 'canes this week, so just maybe we'll get a chance to get the "rubber to the road" LOL!!!!

Here's another idea for the HPI shock. The kit also comes with a small flat cap that has a hole in the middle.Thead a long 4-40 button head screw through the hole and nut in with a nylock nut.The thread a 4-40 rod end on and you have yourself an adjustable mount like the one in the Custom Works kit.

WELL i wasnt able to race today, but i did go to the track to watch.. I was there to witness a crash, which destroyed a maverick car... Bob wright, was running his brushless car, and a wreck happend rioght in front of him.. the wreck actually collected every car on the track... bob hit the wreck at about 35-40 mph..

total damage..

One OPC chassis plate..( pulled a front arm screw through the chassis)
one jr mini servo case
one futaba pcm reciever case
two front body mounts
one hpi shock cap bent into a u shape.
right front supension arm
caster block blown off the arm.
one 1/8th inch axle bent...
one nicley painted body

this is all we saw at a glance.. the wreck sounded so bad, to be honest im actually suprised that is all that broke... bob had just started to get the car to where it needed to be as well. then of course his bad luck picks the hottest day of the year to show up again... for anyone who is wondering, though it was a bad wreck, bob made it out before the tanks blew...

I'll post some pic's later. After I watch the IRL race.

Jake you'll be hearing from me this week.

The good thing is my sweet set of caps survived unscathed. The worst thing is I'll have to rebuild the center shock and try to get the exact dampening I had in it before, luckily it's a HPI shock not an Associated.

It took longer than I thought but I really got the car working good now.I'm running a 4300 Novak system and am going faster than I did last year with the 5800 system.I had to readjust my thinking a little with this car as I was used to tuning by moving the front end around on the Hyperdrive 700 car.

Thanks again Jake for such a great car! My 05 Maverick Slider won it's third race out Saturday in the 4 Cell Super Spec class at Carolina R/C speedway. The car was ballistic in the main, especially off the corners! I can't wait to get ahold of a OPC!

Mike your right! I have been looking at the Maverick cars for a while now, actually since the 04 but it's hard to get away from a car your already familier(SP) with, and everybody around here runs HD's so it's easy to get set up help and lord knows I need it LOL,But It's almost time again for a new chassis and I'm torn between the 05 OPC or the HD pro 3.Now that there's a Maverick at my home track, and as good as Brian is running there may be more on the way, I can lean more that way for sure.I'm on the swift site almost everyday trying to convince myself to go ahead with it.There's also the issue of spare parts.

Ive been running mine on a 365 banked track to, and i have had some crazy wrecks.. this car is a very , solid car ,slider included lol

Tinman: I hope you guys get a run in this weekend! you all need it. Without you guys racing, it's been quiet around here ....

Bob: I've tried the flat cap in the HPI kit ... The darn thing always seems to suck air and not let the diaphragm work properly? Did you seal the thread hole with something?

Burbs: Wow, now that's a wreck!

Bob: Give a call and we'll take care of you. How does that brushless system compare to a brushed motor? Faster than 19 turn?

Brian: You betcha! Glad to hear you got 'er dialed in a running strong. E-mail me a setup soon, for the website.

Pepe: You'll come around sooner or later, I've got faith in you! Spares hasn't been too much of an issue ... like Burbs said, pick up a bumper and bottom plate just in case, and race the darn thing hard as you want too. It might break something in a really bad or unlucky crash, but we ship the same day you call and you'll be running again by the weekend ... I can think of a few MFG's who don't have good parts supply even when you call direct, let alone at a local shop ... :)

RJ: Sorry to see the car go ... But, the guy who got it likes it and the deal you gave him. Hope to see you back with us soon.

I think I have a Maverick chassis or two. The weather has been so bad I haven't run at the local track but once since the FOCAR race and that was way back in, Uhhhhhh, Well it was a long time ago. The car has only been run three race days total since then, Boylans money race, Racerock and the aforementioned local night.

There seems to be turmoil going on at the track and I'll have no part of that anymore. Running these cars is supposed to be fun and some people just suck all the fun out of it. Now where's that dirt oval car? Weeeeeeeeeeee!

David, I know what you mean, alot of people take this hobby to seriously and take the fun out of it by showing their a$$ if things don't go their way, I like to win a race as much as the next guy but if I run into some bad luck on the track I'm not going to be jumping on someone at the top of my lungs, I can't stand to see a grown man acting like a spoiled brat, just my opinion.

The way I build the shock:fill with oil and bleed all the air out, take the bladder and press it down into the shock making sure all the air is out, place the flat cap onto the shock and make sure it seats in the bladder properly then put the aluminum collar on and tighten. There isn't much rebound in the shock doing it this way but it stays consistant run after run.

Sorry I didn't get some pic's of the carnage posted but I started rebuilding before my kid brought the digital camera home.I built up a slider to try this weekend but I'll be ordering a new OPC chassis before the ROAR Nats in October.

The Novak 4300 system is about .2 sec a lap slower than running 19T at The Triclone.I like the fact that it's consistant from run to run,it gives you more time to tune on the chassis and more time to smoke and joke with your buddies-which is usually the best part of racing. The only drawbacks are the huge speed control and the fact that if you over gear it just shuts down when it gets too hot.

Thanks, The Maverick 05' OPC was great all weekend. It just keep getting faster every run. My fastest run was 47 4:03:29, I ran 47 laps 3 times. I was 1.8 sec off of TQ in 2nd, most of that was gained on me at the start. The car took a few laps to come in, then it was a rocket. I ran 5.0s up front(after 4 laps) and 5.2s out the end. I needed to change to a HD type body, but just didn't have the time. The chassis was doing all the work. I'm glad I was running a Maverick!

I'm still new at this 4 cell stock thing, and have yet to get it all figured out,but the car actually did get better as the day went on,but it was a case of to little to late, ended up 5th, besides when your competing against a national champion it's a little intimidating,LOL.Really though, I talked to Jimmy for a while and he gave me some really good points as to things he's doing with his car,I tell ya the more I look at the OPC the more I want one,I'm a little skittish right now though, tracks are closing down left and right around here, and I'm about to be out of the country for two months so I will probably see how things are looking when I get back, besides it would drive me crazy to have a new car sitting there and not be able to run it.One question, I'm a stickler for detail, and appearance,I would want all my aluminum anodized black,is this possible?
