Jake you know when the stars, sun, and moon are lined up in a certain way there is racing Friday night at HW (Jacksonville), Saturday night at Strickland RC Park (Daytona/Ormond Beach), Sunday at MTR (Bradenton), and Monday night at Quaker Steak & Lube (Pinellas).

wow! ernie bucci was awful in the 1st round! had some bad luck in the other 2 rounds..raced his way from the B main into the A main and ran up frony for 60 or more of the 100 lap A main! nice job! i did manage to sneak into the A main qualifing 7th. the only non local racer to make the A without having to bump up. so i call that a decent day. rich B raced his way into the A from the B as well. so the 3 non local boys made up the rear of the field. lol they than decided to invert the start, ouch! rich and I had no clue on what to do for the 100 lapper...needless to say we were pin balls...way off the pace...oh well maybe next time. ernie is liking the new car...he had a new car and a new track with 2 hours time on both! end of the day he was a top 3 car! very cool! butts drank a ton of beer saturday night..sunday he was toast! tin man has to leave the wife at home! dominic just had a lousy day. still kept my streak alive making every A main all year with the new car! thats a good thing!

here is a set-up for you: wolf white front springs(no sway bar)....associated olive lr spring and a associated black rr spring green center spring 2 purple fronts and 2 pink rears can you imagine driving a cadilac with 4 wore out shocks? lol but it worked!

pepe

I have to agree with Katfish, Ernie looked out to lunch when he first hit the track but after a little work the old veteran of many oval wars got his new car working great in no time. Then it was dinnertime all the way.

My car was close from the get go since I already had seen what happened when the Thunder setup had not been installed. I did the MTR tune up before I put the first tire to the track and it worked. My car was actually driving very good in the first qual and the group I was on the track with were driving very courteously/cautiously to say the least.

Each round was re-sorted so in the 2nd round the other guys had $50(50 bucks went to the TQ) bills in their eyes and it was a hammerfest. I'll make no excuses though as my driving was down right embarassing. I think I put the inadvertant ballpeen to a car or two myself. Can't touch this! Hammertime

In the 3rd round I put a different set of rear tires of the same compound on the car. Note to self, The other tires were fine, What were you thinking? My car did 360's on the straights so I pulled it to avoid ruining someone elses chances.

There was only 1 bump up from the C main which Ronnie Hames won as time ran out before I could get up to him. My day was over.

About the tons-O-beer on saturday night? I'll admit to having a fondness for the barley, hops and malt concoction but I believe they rate it in gallons not tons. Again I'll admit I had gallons(the beer tab was over $100 so I really needed to win the race) but I actually was fine on sunday.

Now unless anyone has it on videotape I'll deny pushing Stephen Pedano across the parking lot in a grocery cart saturday night.

I'm ready to do it again. Mike Boylan, His entire crew and all of the locals that showed up made for an extremely good weekend for me. Next time I know where to start.

By the way, Dom's car was hooked up but he just didnt have any racing luck.

05-23-2005, 06:26 PM
yeah pepe thats why i posted it! crazy set up to say the least! lol

butts you put that beer in kegs and weight it!!! you had a ton!!!! lol

i wish i could have had the main back and the 1st round back. i didi turn a 3.9 in the main? go figure the nut behind the wheel might need to tighten up!

jake is MIA today?

Man, the races you guys describe sound huge! Maybe in a few years if all of our locals stay in the hobby we can have oval events like that around here.

But a lot of us still had fun in Ukiah, Ca. Unfortunately, water seeped up through the asphalt right before the mains. Right in the entrances to 1 and 3!

Early in my Spec-19 main my friend AC and I hit the water and got sideways through the turn together like one of those drift "races"! :) I edged him out, but then I had to run cautiously to avoid the water. Well while I was doing that, AC was running full throttle trying to real me in! So I stepped it up and hit the water in turn 1 the wrong way again! I got it sideways and it shot me through the infield a little, like from the appex between 1 and 2 to about the first half of the back straight, and jumped the hose and just barely kept the lead! This was right in front of AC and a lapped car! Think Tony Stewart at the Daytona Busch race at it was something like that (well, something like it, just not quite as cool!). Anyway, now AC is all over me, and we're both running as hard and tight a line as possible (read "having to drive through the puddles") When AC hits the water and not only gets sideways, but spins like a top! This gives me a huge edge and another and yet another water induced spinout secured the win for me.

It wasn't exactly what I would call a great race, but judging by the cheers and laughter from all of our locals, it must have been entertaining and it was fun as hell to drive!

Mainly to see what does what.. ive settled on a good ballpark.. now to do some fine tuning....

PS... we run olive springs outdoors as well...

Heres a picture of my car(#71)at speed. Whats neat about this shot is that the car sits totally level at rest but notice in this pic you can see its rocked back under hard acceleration on the soft suspension and the front tires are hardly turned at all compared to the other car in the shot. Mike really has a good camera.

Sorry for the delays in responding guys ... I've actually been working!!!! LOL

rcgen: Now that weekend would be worth the trip out there! Kind of like a multitrack, mini snowbirds ...

Katfish: You fish too? And whooped up on Ronnie in his boat??

Moss: Did you get a run in this weekend?

Mr. Butts: I'll put a dirt oval car on my list of things to do! :)

Rich: That would be my luck, a rain out after traveling 3000+ miles ...

Katfish: I've heard about that setup being used before ... But, man I just don't get it! Is the track that rough? What happened to you in the 100 lapper? Too much gear?

Pepe: Out here we'd call it a "hoopty" ride ... Sounds like it would just float and wallow around ... But hey, if it works it works!

Mr. Butts: I had no idea you drank beer? LOL

TN: You drove another great race this weekend, well done!

Burbs: Good luck at the Nats!

Mr. Butts: That is a neat picture of the 71 car ... I like the sticker on the hood! Mike does snap a great photo.

I'm glad to hear Ernie Bucci got his '05 out on the track. I'm sure he'll be fully up to speed in just a short time.

Ol' DW put the whoopin' on me this weekend guys ... So far the last three races we've traded the wins, but he's up on me 2 to 1. And, the next race isn't for 2 weeks so I can't even the score (or quiet him down) until then!

I'm off to the Norcca Nats in about an hour.

I've been making good progress with the '05 on the local banked asphalt track.Switching to the solid chassis and moving the batts in 1/4" did wonders.I have a good baseline to work off of now.

I'm optimistic that I'll put a car in the show in both 19T and stock in Tennesee.

Thanks Jake for the great service and quick shipping. It made the transition to the Maverick much easier.

I'll post a complete report on the Nats when I get back.

jake the track is like a 6 on a scale of 1-10 on the roughness rictor scale, lol.

problem is the bump that was there in 4 was leveled and smoothed over..so it has 0 bite coming out of turn 4..you search hard for forward bite. the track is a exact replica of martinsville. you squirt the throttle coming out of 4 and your done. it is realy cool when you figure it out. one of only a few tracks where a 170.00 speedo is put to good use! and ernie seems to be taking the r/c game alot more serious the last 2 months...bad news for the rest of us vultures, lol. the ol' 05 hasn't let me down yet!

have a safe and happy holiday fellas and good luck to those who are going racing! use the force , a cheater motor or anything else to get you up front boys! lol

Well guys, I got a call from Mike Burbey earlier today. If I got the info right, it goes something like this:

Bob Wright had had the most frustrating weekend of his life, and it's only Saturday. His radio has been freaking out and appears to have lost all right hand steering? Now, this may not seem like a problem on a left turn oval, but it is! Anyway, I believe he packed it in after multiple crashes.

Going into the last round of qualifying, Jimmy Flack was sitting 2nd in 4 Cell Stock. One of only two drivers to do 36 laps.

Mike Burbey was the other driver and he was on the pole going into the last round! Awesome!

I haven't heard anything on how qualifying ended up, and it's killing me! :)

Mike said they were doing 4 car qualifiers, but that there would be 8 or 10 in the mains! Ouch! He said the lanes are very narrow, and the infield is unforgiving, basically one mistake and that's it.

Good luck in the mains tomorrow Mike and Jimmy, we're pulling for you!

First off i would like to thank jake for the 05 hookup... the car was definatley the car to beat this weekend.. both jimmy and myself were fast...

I top qualified with a 36 4:04.22... jimmy was econd with a 36 4:05...

Now time for the main.. I got a great hole shot off the pole... there was quite a few wrecks early on, and by the 30 sec mark i had a full lap lead... Jimmy got in one of the wrecks, but he had some serious rip... about the 2 min mark i rolled off the throttle to keep from hitting another car in turn one, and the car washed out and spun... I got going again, and still had the lead.. but it was now about 1/2 a lap ... My car was relly flat after that, and jimmy was comming up fast.. With 30 seconds to go. i knew he would be on my heals, but i felt with how tight the track was, id be able to hold him off... I had another car spin in front of me, and i had to roll off the throttle again, and it spun again.. i was now in third.... but in the last two laps i pased second again....Jimmy ended up winning, and i was second...

There was only three mavericks in house.. Bob had terrible luck.. so with jimy and myself having good weekends, we definatley showed the car is hot...
we finished one two for qualifying, and we finished one two in the main....

I had a great weekend, and i definatley blew away my expectations...I have honestly never worked so hard at a race before.. i did everything i could as far as maintinance, and care.. and it paid off huge...the car was incredble, thats all i can say....

ill try and get my setup to jake in the next few days... i ran both the slider and the opc when i was there, but the opc came out on top for the track...

My 05 OPC, My HEFTY CELLS Battery packs. and my new sponsor , Johns BSR Tires. without this combination and lots of hard work, and my boys i went down with.. i couldnt have done as well as i did...

05-30-2005, 02:03 PM
Kat.. thats how turn one is on this track.. if you had to lift anywhere past the apex of the turn, you spun out... it was a very tight, low traction turn.. it was the reason so many had problems with setup this weekend...there was a very fine line. and as long as you stayed on power the cars were fast through turn one..

Guys, I can't tell ya how proud I am of Jimmy and Mike's efforts at the Nats this last weekend! Thank you very much to both of you! Holding the TQ honors, and taking a win like that is AWESOME! I was also on a Hayes designed car, the last ADX car, Both burds and Jimmy's cars were great. Burbs couldnt have said it better, The fast cars were on edge and if you loosened your car up just a little to much you were spinning out. Just like i did in the main. I wish i put that extra turn of tweak in the car before i put it down b/c it was one of a few cars that could have won the race.

Well even though i was burnt out from tennessee, i decided to go to the local track and practice.. at 3 i left for my union meeting,, oh yeah while at nats my wife called to let me know im laid off till july 18th.. Ouch that sucks... So i get back from the meeting, and decide to pack her in and go home.. A local guy there was like where are you going.. I told him i didnt feel like racing... A few minutes later he comes back and says well i just paid your race fee so your racing...:) After a bit of bob you dont have to do that.. i decided to stay...

So i got the car pretty good in practice.. made a few changes for my first qual and wnet out.. My bet ever on my home track was a 33 4 flat.. My first run i ran a 34 4:06,, made a few more tweeks and went 34 4:05. then i went 34 4:04... as it gets darker and colder the track slows down, yet i was getting faster... the main i finished 2nd with a 34 4:05 right on the heals of our local hotshoe.. i was was 3 tenths back.. basicaly on his butt the whole 4 minutes.. It was awesome... I got another second place LOL.. i have to shake this trend HE HE/..

So the 05 contiunues to help me get faster and faster.. all 4 runs were personal bests... i cant belive how well this opc works on caps... thanks again Jake, and Brad for an awesome ride..

ill be out there tommorrow for more prctice with setups... with being laid off, ill have plenty of time to get the car ready for a 35 lap run... I cant have you being the king this year again LOL... Hopefully i can kep it together and we can push eachother tot he 36 lap mark... although if you help grif anymore, were both going to be in trouble.. he he

Well, I'm glad to see a few posts here, things got kinda quiet for a day or two .... I've got a lot going on right now, but I'll try to be more active myself!

Brad: Dumped all the spam, and all the old e-mails ... Resend and we'll see what happens!

Moss: Is Sunday the first run on the new ride? Nothing like taking a new chassis out for a 60mph spin around a huge track!

Katfish: You really finished the 1/12 scale in 7 days? But, you didn't even call me with any questions! Where are you running this weekend? Sorry to hear the Focar race was rained out.

Hey, I forgot to mention to everyone asking how the '05 will run on caps ... Thanks to Jimmy and Mike for answering that question! If anyone has any setup questions for them, post them up!

I've got one for Jimmy: When you use the dampener tubes instead of side shocks, do you run the tweak screws in the t-plate?

Mr. Butts: How are you? How's Mrs. Butts doing? (good I hope!)

jflack
06-08-2005, 11:34 PM
On the carpet I used the spring on the dampening tubes, no tweak screws. At Rush & Son concrete track, I used tweak screws-no side springs. I found that the car was better thru the tri-oval without the side springs. In traffic the car was solid, and fast. I could put the car anywhere. I know this is OLD School, but it worked. It was all about chassis balance, most were on edge when they were fast. The solid chassis 05' Mav was very stable and very fast all weekend. Great chassis.........
