View Full Version : The MAVERICK OVAL CHASSIS Thread
maverick08 03-07-2005, 12:09 AM Well fellas, I went to new castle last night and tqued and won 19 turn. I'm still about 3 laps off brad's track record, but not too bad considering its the first time i've raced an oval car in about 2 years. The new car is definitely AWESOME! The biggest thing I noticed about it is how well it reacted to the changes I made during the night. Can't wait to make a few adjustments and go do some more racin, this car has sooo much potential! Talked to quite a few people about the car, and got alot of good reactions about it. Hats off to Jake and Brad for the best maverick design to date!
Later,
Todd Gross
BHayes 03-07-2005, 08:10 AM Todd,
Glad the car ran well for you. Good job on the TQ and win. I think the curent 19 turn turn track record is held by Bill Malicoat at 64 laps. The fastest I have gone at New Castle so far is 63 4:00.
Brad
smokefan 03-07-2005, 01:15 PM Brad you have mail.
maverick08 03-07-2005, 01:58 PM My bad Brad, someone there told me you had the track record. 63 - 64, who's countin anyway! LOL

Go to www.jphracing.com and click on r/c products for sale. Go to manufacturers and pick swift . The servo plate should be listed there.

did it finally stop raining in California yet ?

JPH Racing 03-09-2005, 12:12 AM Todd: Nice work! Sounds like your first outing with the '05 was a productive one! I know you'll get 'er dialed in even better after you get a few race days in. Welcome back to oval!
JFlack: Thanks for posting your set-up! Interesting using dampener tubes on the sides. Can you give me a heads up on why this set-up works well for you, as instead of side shocks? Do you run really light lube, or heavy? And, have you tried rear steer yet?
I know each track has a fast set-up, it's cool checking them out!
T-Shirtman: www.jphracing.com (http://www.jphracing.com), or give me a call at 707-586-3375. I'll be more than happy to ship you whatever you need.
Rich: Now that's funny! I forgot about that photo ... Man, look at Ronnie's face! That's the "Snowbird's Stare"! Not enough sleep! I'll never wrench on Katfish's car in his pits, without cleaning it up first ... Man, that guy had every tool and spare part out on his table at one time! Not that the rest of you were much better! LOL
Hey, what's this I hear about you guys running super soft side springs on the bumpy track (last weekend)? Explain this, please?
jflack 03-09-2005, 12:41 AM This setup is very good in the middle of the corners. Very easy to drive and fast. This track is very smooth. I've always ran a soft side shock spring setup on flat track.
I updated the setup with the side shock lube. Its Mugen 3000 diff lube..... I don't think the dampening tubes are better as far as function goes. Where they are better is they stay the same run after run. I hate the small side shocks! I end up throwing the small shock in the trash. If I don't run the dampening tubes, I run a TC3 shocks setup as side shocks. I don't like the small side shock and never run them! Best I have ran is a 3.9 sec lap and a 58 4:00 in practice at Little Talldega carpet track.
I have ran rear steer, it made the car very loose in the middle. It was just too much for this track. I've changed the car up some for the next race on March 19th. I think it will be even better. I will post the results.
Turbodog 03-09-2005, 12:03 PM Jake, at least you didn't pick up Katfish's transmitter. lol BOYT
JPH Racing 03-09-2005, 12:52 PM JFlack: Thanks for the info. I always like hearing about different setups, and why guys prefer them.
Turbo: Not without wearing a rubber glove! LOL
Nah, all those guys are awesome, and funny too.
cneyedog 03-09-2005, 05:49 PM Nah, all those guys are awesome, and funny too.
Jake, you forgot we're all good lookin too ! ;)
CBear3 03-10-2005, 11:29 AM Maiden voyage of the 05 was pretty good, although not outstanding. Still got some stuff to work on. Car turned very well, but was really loose off the corner. I've got some kinks to work out, like sloppiness in the T-Plate pivots. The T-plate will actually rotate ever so slightly around the rear pivot for reasons I haven't figured out. It doesn't appear to be a chassis issue because the pivot balls themselves are held stationary, so I think I've either got a bad batch of balls (no comments please) or the plastic holders are bad. I did however match my single lap best with some ease, but the twitchiness that I hope was caused by the t-plate caused it to drive too erratic to put a series of laps together.
JPH Racing 03-10-2005, 12:25 PM Rich: Wow, it's only been a month or so since the 'Birds ... And, I already forgot the good looking part! Imagine that! LOL
CBear: Loose t-plate pivot balls = uncontrolled rear steer (both directions, NOT GOOD). Which = an erratic handling race car. Which = not as much fun as you should have had your first time out!
Yep, sometimes it's the balls, sometimes it's the plastics, sometimes it's the t-plate itself. You'll have to hold the chassis in one hand, the pod in the other and move both side to side while looking closely at the pivot balls. You should be able to see what's wrong. Sometimes just snugging them up a little will take care of it, as long as it doesn't bind the t-plate action side to side. We've got those cool little holes in the chassis so you can adjust the pivot ball screws without having to take the t-plate off the chassis ...
Glad to hear you matched your personal best time already! Next time you'll your break your personal best lap count!
David Butts 03-11-2005, 09:40 PM Hi everybody.
jhseckinger 03-12-2005, 10:40 AM How many Maverics are going to be in Daytona? Ill be there ...
David Butts 03-12-2005, 11:08 AM How many Maverics are going to be in Daytona? Ill be there ...
All of my multiple personalities will be there. Who said that? Said what? I dunno. I didnt hear anything did you? Did I what? Oh nevermind!
cneyedog 03-12-2005, 01:43 PM I dont have a maverick, but I think Jake is cool ! ....... does that count ?;)
I'll be @ Strickland today in Daytona. The weather is absolutely perfect ! 75 and 30% Humidity ......
see ya there BUTTS (tm) !!
katf1sh 03-13-2005, 12:59 AM got to run the new sled tonight at strickland! only car to go 56 laps baby! car was on rails all night!
spektrum radio killed any chance i may have had in the main though? not 100% sold on it yet? me thinks 4 cell racers need a receiver pack for sure? jake and brad thanks for a great ride!
Taz_S 03-13-2005, 03:45 PM any one got the mini mav yet?
cbkwik 03-14-2005, 01:32 AM i just acquired an 04 maverick, has a standard l4 rear pod, planning on getting the performance pod-my question is this car has a hyperdrive center shock mount, with a fiberglass t-plate, the t-plate at the very front has been trimmed to clear the shock mount, if i switch to a spring steel, i assume this will still happen unless i move the mount forward and probably get a longer shock shaft, any other suggestions, looks like an awesome car so far
any help is appreciated
chad
JPH Racing 03-14-2005, 02:09 AM Mr. Butts: Hello! Got your e-mail, help is on the way!
James: Let's see ... You ... Phil, Katfish, Tinman, Dominic and a few others! Have fun!
Rich: Gee thanks! I think you're swell too! We can still get you a Maverick anytime ... Ronnie already got the 1/12 scale, now you can get the 1/10 scale! By the way, did Ronnie give MaryAnn a run this weekend?
Katifsh: Awesome about the '05 results ... Bummer about the Spektrum results.
Taz: You're next!
cbkwik: You may have to grind the t-plate slightly, or do what I've done in the past with different brands .... Grind the mount. That way, if you have to change t-plates quickly, you don't have to grind it at the track. Or, like you mentioned, just lengthen the center shock (with a shock shaft, standoff style extension, or longer ball cup).
BHayes 03-14-2005, 07:38 AM I ran the '05 again this weekend in New Castle. Qualified 2nd and won the main in 19 turn. The setup was similar to what I have posted on here previously. The car is really running well on the flat carpet tracks.
smokefan 03-14-2005, 12:38 PM Brad sorry I didn't show up Sat. I have the flu and have been sick all weekend I'll hook up with you soon though.
cneyedog 03-14-2005, 01:31 PM Rich: Gee thanks! I think you're swell too! We can still get you a Maverick anytime ... Ronnie already got the 1/12 scale, now you can get the 1/10 scale! By the way, did Ronnie give MaryAnn a run this weekend?
Maybe in a month or 2 Jake..........what kind of A.P.R. can i get on one ....... lol.
No Ronnie didnt run maryann, he said somebody forgot to send him the right side caster block ? ........ he'll "break" it in at the speedway race .......... lol.
rich
JPH Racing 03-14-2005, 02:37 PM Brad: Congrats on your first win with the '05!
Rich: Man, I told Ronnie to just run the stock plastic block on the right for now ... It's at the right geometry height, and it's light weight! Would have worked just fine!
I'll talk to the guys in the financing dept., and see what they can do for you! Will Katfish cosign?
smokefan 03-14-2005, 02:54 PM Hey while your talking to the finance department see if they are going to allow leasing
LOLOL
cneyedog 03-14-2005, 04:52 PM Jake, i dont think Ronnie had the car completely finished ........ its maiden voyage will be at the Speedway Spectacular.
Katfish co-sign ? ...... that'd cost me more !! :freak:
Jake, when I get my house settled down (gettin the damage from the canes taken care of on the inside) I'll have time to build a new car ........ till then I'll make do with the sled I have .......:)
Stagger2 03-14-2005, 05:23 PM Looking at summer races. Anyone have have a good 'crete setup they want to share? Cant remember the run line but think its around 190-200 w' banked corners.

David Butts 03-14-2005, 07:34 PM Jake is da'man. I bet he could sell mountain bikes in Florida. I called him to order a bumper or two and he sold them to me. Along with another car kit to go along with them. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_11_6.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZUxdm068YYUS) If the wifey finds out I may be using the new car for a pillow, In the garage.
Honestly I dont think you will find better personal customer service with anybody anywhere. Jake, You really are da'man!
katf1sh 03-14-2005, 08:21 PM yeah jake is the poster boy for customer service! but the thing that realy seperates him from the competition, is he is member # 10 in my fan club! muahahhaha
JPH Racing 03-15-2005, 01:44 AM Smokefan: I hadn't thought of that .... leasing r/c oval cars. Now that's an idea who's time has come! Let's see, maybe $25 a month, for 10 months? Optional buy out at the end? And, of course, 10 cents a mile for going over the mileage allowance? Hmmm, it's got some possibilities! :)
Rich: No worries, I'm patient! Tell Ronnie to be gentle!
Stagger: No concrete setups yet. Once you get a run in, ask us as many tuning questions as you would like. We'll all get it figured out!
Mr Butts: Hey, they don't have mountain bikes in Florida?? You were definitely the hardest sale I made all day .... I REALLY worked for that one! Thank you!!
Katfish: I'm in the top 10 now? Right on!
I was showing that you were #1 in that picture that Rich took a page or two back... LOL
smokefan 03-15-2005, 02:27 AM Jake question is how many miles do we get before we go over LOL
David Butts 03-16-2005, 05:25 PM Mr Butts: Hey, they don't have mountain bikes in Florida??
Jake, Yep, You can buy a mountain bike at almost any bike shop or Walmart here in Florida. Wanna hear another kicker? Most hardware and home center superstores sell, are you ready for this? Snow shovels.
Wish my kit had gotten here today. My truck is in the shop so I couldn't work.
JPH Racing 03-17-2005, 01:14 AM Smokefan: Maybe we should do laps instead of miles ... Just got to figure out how to track them!
Mr Butts: If only UPS had known you would be home today, I'm sure they would have brought the package early! Snow shovels in Florida!?! I know you're kidding me with that one!
Tinman: Do you guys stock snow shovels????
smokefan 03-17-2005, 03:44 AM Jake if you come up with a way to track them let me know and I'll test the system out for you. LOLOL
TinManSEP 03-17-2005, 05:44 AM Jake...No "snow" shovels, we got roofing shovels, garden shovels, and even a few hos, oops I think I spelled that wrong (hehehehehe)!!!!!
Heading for Daytona later today, wish you a DW where on your way. Plenty of Mavericks will be there, should be a fun weekend.
Tin Man
JPHRacer 03-17-2005, 02:49 PM Tin Man we wish we were on our way. Hope you guys rip it up.

Jake, the only shovel TinMan needs is for shoveling the horse....! ....... muuuuuuuuuuuuuhahahahahahaha
David Butts 03-18-2005, 12:19 AM My 05 care package was waiting on me when I got home tonight. Looks like I'll be running the OPC in Daytona though. My wife had emegency pacemaker surgery again today. This time to repair what was done during last fridays surgery that was to supposed to have cured the problem. Doctors are bigger hacks than all us r/c'ers and they have peoples lives at their finger tips.
No time to get the new car together but the wifey wants me to go race anyway. Yep, I'm more of a pest at home than I am at the track.
Jake, The self addressed stamped envelope is very thoughtful of you. It'll be in your mailbox soon. More stickers and a killer set of setup sheets to boot. What a kit? I dont think I've seen another one that comes with such detailed setup tips
katf1sh 03-18-2005, 09:27 PM david did not make it to the race today? i sure hope evberything is ok at home?
tinman, phil and myslef seem to be up to speed and turning about the same lap times! that's a good thing! if there were 20 19 turn cars there today i would say 85% of them are flying! weather looks good saturday and sunday. i'll keep you all posted! cya
JPH Racing 03-18-2005, 09:55 PM Mr. Butts: Glad the care package made it in one piece! And, I hope everything's going well with the Miss's.
Katfish: Go get 'em Kat! Tell the gang I said hello, and I hope you all rip it up tomorrow!

katf1sh 03-20-2005, 06:24 PM it's all over!
i'm not going to brag about who did what with other cars...but congrats to tom pedano ....
the A in 19 turn had one maverick i finished 6th it had to be the best A main outdoors i have ever raced in!!!! just awesome! car got faster with each minor change i made and this is only it's second run outdoors! it's fun running with the pack!
phil owen was blistering the track in the last round but had some trouble with a slower car, kinda sucked.
in the B main phil was hauling the mail but lost a spur gear.... tin man refuses to run his new car and is paying the price! lol maybe now he will break it out? talk to him jake...he needs a nudge......he he check out thunder racing for pictures and results soon. now i want to race every weekend! wonder why?
oh i have to mention this: david butts ran 37 laps in the last round with his OPC...he didn't make the show but that was a good run indeed! needless to say david left happy.

Words can not describe the weekend we just experienced but being myself I'll try.
Hmm? Big r/c oval race outdoors?
Big r/c oval race outdoors on asphalt?
Big r/c oval race outdoors on asphalt with over a hundred of your fellow racing buddies?
Big r/c oval race outdoors on the actual Daytona Speedway asphalt with over a hundred of your fellow racing buddies?
Big r/c oval race outdoors on the actual Daytona Speedway asphalt with over a hundred of your racing buddies with an endless procession of interested spectators brought in by the annual Speedway Spectacular car and truck show.
Uh oh I guess I can't describe it in words so I'll use just one.
Wow!
All the Maverick pilots in attendance were getting around the track quite well. Some better than others. And yes My OPC continues to get better everytime I hit the track with it. You think it knows I have it's replacement? Maybe just maybe I'll sacrifice the backup L4 instead of the OPC and run two Mavericks instead.
Katf1sh's car looked better than any I've seen him run sofar on asphalt.
Phil And Tinman's cars were both dialed and cruising too.
Did I mention there were a lot of red shirts at this race? I thought I had the exclusive on the shirt deal. Dont tell me they got stickers too.
When did you say the 05 H.E.(tm) solid chassis will be out?
ohiorcracer 03-20-2005, 11:04 PM Hi Guys my name is Kevin Henson and we had the Arcor Carpet open Here in Ohio in Akron this weekend and I wanted you all to know that I was the only one here who had a maverick and I finished 2nd in the B main that was 12th out of 29 racers and the car kicked butt. I love this car and people kept asking me what kind of car it was and I would tell them maverick and they said they never seen one till now. So I just wanted to say that even though I am one I am gonna be an army of one against all others. Hey Jake I am planning on getting a few bumpers off of you So I will e-mail you soon. Thanks Again Kevin Henson
