View Full Version : The MAVERICK OVAL CHASSIS Thread
wildman 02-20-2005, 02:18 PM hey guys,
Gearing 19t just amazes me. We run a short 125ft run line track with sweeping coners. I'm up to a 2.30 rollout now with full timing the car is balistic fast. It runs like a mod car. Jake the 2nd new car was on rails last night, started outside poll and won after geting stuffed on the 2nd lap came from 3/4 lap down to win. The car just drives so hard through the coners its awsome!
Thanks for getting the stuff out so fast. hope your feeling better.
Kevin
jason crist 02-20-2005, 02:28 PM JPH Racing
i didn't full throttle thru the corners i burped it the hole race.
I also played with 24 deg timing and 26, 34 and 36 deg timings as well.
Ya if you look at the top ten guys from the club race and then the top 20 from the snowbirds race look to see how many where in the top 20 .......
track does change alot at the bigger events
it also changes a little during a club race but you won't have to make the bigger changes.
I also am looking forward to the nats in April
good luck to everyone

JPH Racing 02-20-2005, 10:44 PM Kevin: Awesome!! Glad #2 is right up to speed the first time out! The gearing really is strange on the 19 turns. The 'Birds always catches me by surprise, because that little track is so fast! I think at a local level I'm under gearing my 19's ...
Jason: I agree with the top of the club race, not making the top of the 'Birds race. The bite coming up separates the tuners very fast! Nice job making it up to the B in 19 turn!
David Butts 02-21-2005, 01:18 AM The 'Birds always catches me by surprise, because that little track is so fast!
Jason: I agree with the top of the club race, not making the top of the 'Birds race. The bite coming up separates the tuners very fast!
I finished up 10th after the club races in sportsman 19t but could only manage 27th overall in the actual race after qualifying 30th or 10th in the C. That was still an improvement over last years 63rd overall in stock so look out next year. A main here I come.
I went back and looked at where I would have qualified if I had been able to run the same number as I had in the club race and I would have only improved to 23rd overall so it looks as if it's more important to run a clean race over a fast pace with wrecks because the top 20 were seperated by seconds not laps. One or two oop's and you are outta there.
BHayes 02-21-2005, 07:40 AM yokman, it was good having you in the 19 turn class this weekend. I am looking forward to next weekend in Ft Wayne. See ya there.
Shumacher 99 02-21-2005, 10:29 PM Another Jacksonville/hw racer with a Maverick ride. Val will be happy with it as I have been.
I'd say he was happy. Fastest he's ever run to date. He's only been racing Oval for a few months now but he is a fast learner and is getting around good. The Maverick was handleing very well all day and he was very happy. Course when you go from an L3 to the MAv. 04 OPC who wouldn't be. "Night and day" is all he kept saying , "night and day"...lol Now I want one...
TinManSEP 02-23-2005, 10:32 AM Okay Maverick Racers..a week since the Snowbirds, all caught up on sleep, back to work, and local racing will resume this Sunday. Can't wait to get back on the pavement and have some fun!!!!
Remember...Go Fast, Turn Left, and never Look Back,
Tin Man
CBear3 02-23-2005, 12:56 PM Well, finally back from my Florida racing expedition (big cars and little cars) and picked up a new Mav while we were getting our tails whipped at the Birds. Hopefully have the car ready to roll for next week's club racing (or maybe even this weekend), but for tonight I'll have to go with the ole Hyperdrive. Can't wait to get the new car built :)
BHayes 02-23-2005, 02:58 PM Good to see some more Mavs hitting the track. Let us know how it goes.
JPH Racing 02-24-2005, 12:39 AM Mr. Butts: Yes sir, those "oops" add up in the wrong direction awful fast! Getting a clean qualifying run at the 'Birds is like winning the lottery. But, when you get one it sure feels good!
Shumacher: Thanks for the report on the Val's new OPC. We could get one out to you real quick like! Let me know!
Tinman: Good luck this weekend. Tell Dom I said hello!
CBear: Don't hold back, build that new ride! I'm looking forward to hearing your comparison to what you're running now, and your new '05.
Bhayes: So many readers, and so few posters ... Wish all the Maverick guys weren't shy and polite, maybe they would have more to say?
Keep us posted guys, we really do like talking/typing about cars and such, and really like hearing about your racing experiences.
crash 02-24-2005, 01:35 AM JPH: It was great meeting you at the birds. ( I was the one w/ the mini mav in the club race) you ain't kidding about that "clean run" at the birds. first qualifier made top 10 second round knocked around like a red headed step child (still finished 12th overall). all in all it was still a great time, loved every hack filled minute of it!LOL I also got that 04 mav together and am dying to put some laps on it at the Speedway Spectacular in Daytona. will let ya know how it goes. oh yeah how'd ya do in that video game race at Race Rock?

Thanks Jake. I will wait until the new OPC comes out . I should be due for a new car by then. But it's on the top of the list. Great product man.
katf1sh 02-24-2005, 07:18 PM video game race was cancled......
nice ad in extreme jake!
nice little caption in extreme as well
you must know somebody? lol
Matt Bayless 02-24-2005, 07:53 PM I have switched to the the Maverick car and must give a thumbs up to Jake for great customer service. If you are thinking about buying a new car give him a try. I am sure you wont be disapointed.
Matt Bayless
JPH Racing 02-25-2005, 12:17 AM What's up Crash! Thanks for the hook up on the game deal, but I guess it didn't happen! Keep me posted on your race results!
Shumacher: Hope you're due for a new car soon! :)
Katfish: Thanks Bro! Extreme totally blew chunks on the caption! LOL Guess they were too busy to take a few minutes to double check something that didn't make sense. Or, I guess I should double proofread anything I send in .... The trademark sign got resized in the e-mail ... so, it came out '05 Maverick H.E.TM .... "doesn't roll off the tongue" Oh well!
Matt: Sorry again about my mistake ... I guess the words out, I'm human! UPS should be there before 10:30 tomorrow. Let me know how you race weekend goes with the new ride!
Dodgefan23 02-25-2005, 06:31 PM
WOW!!! Nice car Jake!
I saw where Tony Staples is running mavericks now out there,I remember him well from running with him here in SC.Super cool front end on his velodrome car,is this something in the works?
katf1sh 02-25-2005, 07:46 PM jake i suggest ronny should proof read your stuff first! ahahhhhhhhhhhh inside joke!
Al Spina Fan 02-25-2005, 10:24 PM Dave,
Running clean was the ticket. I was in Qualifier #1 in stock (the we don't know who you are heat) and three of us qualified in the top 11. We had no traffic as the slower cars moved over and we all lifted when necessary. In some of the later heats, all the drivers were sure they could TQ if they could hold off the guy behind them. That made for some pushing shoving and punting that surely cost a few drivers some time. As for 19T if your spur and pinion are not the same size you must be undergeared.....lol
Peter
JPH Racing 02-26-2005, 12:07 AM Dodgefan: Thanks!!
Pepe: The front end is a modified DNA front end. It's a knock-off of the old Econo-Glide, that Donn Natle from Team Associated is making. There's thread on HobbyTalk somewhere about it.
Katfish: Yeah, you can proof the pictures, and Ronny can proof the text!
Al Spina: Congrats on your finish at the 'Birds! Good insight on the qualifying. Seemed it didn't matter what class it was, as the rounds went by there was less and less respect on the track. And, most of the time, there wasn't much to begin with!
But, as they often say "It was the same for all of us!"
cneyedog 02-26-2005, 11:28 AM Katfish: Yeah, you can proof the pictures, and Ronny can proof the text!
Now that is funny stuff ! ....... I heard ronny has a 1/12th scale on the way ....... thanks Jake...... now he'll be outta control in 2 different scales. muuuuhahahahaha!

yokman 02-27-2005, 01:41 PM well just getting back from a VERY long day and night of racing.brad hays and i tried to represent MAVERICK this weekend at a trophy race in ft wayne IN.offical cout was 105 racers.brad was the man in 19 turn.i think he qualified 2 and came in 3rd agianst some pretty tough compition.his 05 is looking awsome and getting the job done where ever he goes.very constint.
as far as i go well.....not as good.i ran 6 cell stock for the first time and just didnt have enough power to make the show.out of 16 drivers i qualified 9 witch put me first in the B. but atleast i laid the smack down to em in the B by like 3 laps.thanks to brad my car was pretty good all night and couldnt really ask any more out of it.just wish i would have got a good clean run in.but oh well this just makes me want to try even harder.
David Butts 02-27-2005, 02:27 PM Well the question of how the 05 will work on a big asphalt oval was answered yesterday to me. Philip Owen came down to Hobby World and ran some real impressive laps with it. Took a pretty viscious t-bone hit with it in practice and my concerens for the side shock mounts were for nil, No bends there. In the secong round of qualifying he was on a 37 lap pace after he passed me for the lead which is right on the record but slowed just before the end to a fast 36. Oh yeah, He's another driver that had never run a 36 lap run before so not only did he get his 36 he almost got a 37. Arrrrggghhh, I'm stuck at a fast 35.
Phil's car looked great Jake. I still haven't hit the lottery so my OPC hangs in there for now. I'm trying the 24 degree timing huge gear/rollout setup right now and yesterdays results look promising. Matched my all time fastest lap and turned more of them too. I need to make an adapter so I can run a small spur gear. On the motor! I ran a 3.21 rollout and I think the motor will tug a 3.35 or more. Choo chooooooo here I come, Chugga chugga chugga.
Oh yeah, we had the dreaded "R" word set in after the 2nd round of qual so the highly anticipated 19t A main never got to be run. It was going to be real interesting to say the least with atleast 4 or 5 guys that have 37 lap capabilities. Sofar ony 3 have ever run 37 laps and from the fastest to the slowest there's like 3/10ths between'em, 1st and 2nd fastest runs ever on the track are only separated by .010 of a second which works out roughly to 1.5 inches at the finish line. It was either going to be the fastest main ever run or the one with the biggest hits cuz speed kilz r/c carz too.
swtour 02-28-2005, 04:14 AM I saw where Tony Staples is running mavericks now out there,I remember him well from running with him here in SC.Super cool front end on his velodrome car,is this something in the works?
I didn't get to see what TONY was running yesterday, but I do know he was running the DNA Front End (featured on the SWTour sight)
Tony WON the 19t "A" Main event at the season opening South-West Tour Series event at the Encino Velodrome.
TinManSEP 02-28-2005, 10:44 AM Okay Maverick Guys...I ended up sitting home watching the race on TV. Rain in sunny Florida got us this past weekend. Still waiting to get the '05 on the hard surface and have some fun. Anyone else besides the Jacksonville crew do any racing this past weekend?
BHayes 02-28-2005, 11:45 AM I ran my '05 at a fairly small flat carpet oval this past weekend. Summit Raceway in Ft Wayne, Indiana. Ran real well, qualified 2nd and finished 3rd in 4-cell 19 turn. Car handled very well, I just missed a little on gear ratio. Here is the basic setup I ran....
Tires: BSR double pink LF LR and RR, purple-orange RF
Front springs: green
Caster: 4° RF, 2° LF
Side shocks: 30 wt / gold springs
Side shock location: middle holes
Center shock: 40 wt / Silva gold spring
Center shock location: all the way forward, 2nd hole from bottom
T-Plate: Finishline firm
T-Plate location: offset
Pod length: longest setting
Front end length: shortest setting
Body: Protoform Dodge MD / Thunder wing
This is real close to my setup for the New Castke Indiana track also. It seems to be a good starting setup for flat carpet ovals. Let me know if anyone wants more details.
CBear3 02-28-2005, 03:15 PM How about Front and rear track? Trailed the left side with the locating plates? Camber? Battery position? (Not trying to be a pain in the rear, really)
There's just so many variables on these darn things that sometimes you can be way off with the same "setup" because some of the obscure things are left unsaid :)
I was just playing with building my 05 and realized I had to cut down a bunch of tires so that I'll be able to run offset. I've actually never done that before (its only my third year in R/C, and second with pan cars) so if anybody has good insight on how much to take off that'd be cool, I figure about a quarter inch. Was thinking about experimenting and doing the same on the right side as well to keep the car going straight when it was supposed to.
BHayes 02-28-2005, 03:51 PM CBear3,
For front track, the left front wheel was spaced all the way in on the stub axle, the rf was spaced out about .030".
For rear track, it was right at 8". I am running the t-plate offset, but I did not cut down the LR tire width. I use a 1/2" hub and just tuck the LR in as close to the pod as possible.
Camber is set to get even tire wear, so I am not sure of the exact measurement. I'll check it tonight and post back. On the LF I run the upper arm in the highest hole. In the RF I run it in the lowest hole. This is with IRS mounts. And both arms are mounted in the inner set of holes on the IRS mounts.
I did not have any trail in the front end. Both sides were set to the shortest wheelbase position.
Battery position is pretty far back, but not all the way. I'll look at the car when I get home this evening and post back with the exact location.
One other thing I forgot to mention is I ran with 0 rear steer.
Hope that helps...keep the questions coming, and I'll try to answer
CBear3 02-28-2005, 04:29 PM Thanks Brad, thats one of the many reasons I chose to go with the Maverick. Not only do the average Joe's post what they run, but the designers also. The "Maverick community" is vocal enough that you can always find somebody who can help out :)
About the front end though, the kit comes with one locator plate that trails the other by like .060 or something. Did you use the plates or just slide the mounts all the way back against the chassis and run it that way? The only concern we had about the whole car was the sliding front end mount. We've never had a problem with knocking one out of whack, put we were considering making our plates and using the two inboard screw holes to absolutely fix the position of the front arms in the slots. It takes away infinite adjustment, but that way we'll know its always square.
Jamie Hanson 02-28-2005, 05:41 PM I just wanted to Say Brad did have that car working really well.
Brad, good run this past weekend in Ft Wayne. It was a fun main. I wish the wreck would not have happened because you, Kevin, and I were all so close.
Look forward to racing with you again soon. Nationals perhaps?
Jamie Hanson.
BHayes 02-28-2005, 06:24 PM Thanks Jamie, you had a great run on Saturday.
CBear3, for battery placement, I used the rear hole on the chassis, and the middle hole on the tray adapter.
On the front end, I have it slid all the way back in the holes on the chassis.
BHayes 02-28-2005, 06:29 PM Here are some pictures of my car.
JPHRacer 02-28-2005, 10:50 PM Thanks Brad, thats one of the many reasons I chose to go with the Maverick. Not only do the average Joe's post what they run, but the designers also. The "Maverick community" is vocal enough that you can always find somebody who can help out :)

I had a real good wreck at the birds running mod. I got tatooed by someone who forgot to turn going into 3. The front end didnt move at all. Not even a hair. I also made a driving error at our local track again racing mod and hit the PVC pipe going into the corner. It hit so hard my car bounced back and knocked the motor loose. My front end didnt move. My servo plate did, but the front end did not.
It will most likely take a chassis breaking incident to get the front end to move on an impact.
There are situations where that front split is a good thing. I have run it everywhere I have been with the new car. RF back 0.015" Its a small change but it did make the car turn harder off the corner.

merich401 03-01-2005, 10:18 PM Well after the past few months running the adx prototype car i am joining the maverick team. Cars look very close to the prototype, so it should be a good transfer. Looking forward to adding another maverick to the mid-west. Who is all going to the carpet nats at Josh's??? I will be running 19 turn, should be a great race
Matt Erich
B mullins 03-02-2005, 12:09 AM I was looking at your site and did not see a complete roller for the 05, and was wondering if it is just a conversion kit or will there be a complete kit in the works?
Thanks
B
JPH Racing 03-02-2005, 01:33 AM Rich: Maryann is on the way. Ronny should have her today, in fact. Hopefully he'll build her up, treat her right, and make us proud!
Mr. Butts: Thanks for the race recap. Phil doesn't post often (too modest), but he did call me to tell me how much he liked the new car on asphalt. Said he was "Tickled" with it. That's good? Right? LOL
swtour: Tony has a few Mavericks. He's running an OPC for his Velo car, with a modified DNA front end.
Tinman: Sorry to hear you guys got rained out. Better luck this weekend!
Cbear: Try only cutting about an 1/8th inch off the inside of the left rear. Shouldn't make much difference in the drive of the car, but you could cut the rights also.
The front locking plates are offset 30thou for trailing. One way they are the same, the other way they are offset. Just lay them on top of each other and you'll see this. To start off with, set the right and left side the same.
We've had no problems with the front end shifting. Use the washers though, they will give a little extra bite into the carbon. As long as everything is tightened up, there should be no movement. Now, I'm sure there will be wrecks that get them to shift, but I'm also sure there will be other damage as well. Hopefully this won;t happen to you!
Jamie: Thanks for the post!
Brad: Thanks for posting the pics of the car. I'll have the others up on the site in a day or two. I'll add you set-up there too.
Merich: Welcome! DW and I are trying to get everything lined up to attend the Nats in Ohio. Words is, Brad maybe there as well!! There should be a good Maverick group attending.
B: Conversion kit only at this time.
smokefan 03-02-2005, 04:38 AM All I know is when the time comes to get a new chassie. I'm putting my money on a Maverick. Besides Brad has helped me alot this yr.
BHayes 03-02-2005, 07:53 AM Matt Erich has been runnig very well with the ADX3 car. So I am anxious to see what he can do with the new Maverick. It will be good to get some more Mavericks on the track here in the mid-west.
smokefan, I am always glad to help. It is cool to see how much you have improved already in the short time you have run on carpet. When are you going back to New Castle? I can't make it this weekend, but I might be there on March 12th.
maverick08 03-02-2005, 09:36 AM Well fellas, i'm getting my 05 ready to debut at New Castle this weekend! Can't wait to try it out. I've owned every Maverick chassis since 2002, ( man thing have come a long way in a short amount of time! huh jake! ) and Jake keep telling me how awesome the new chassis drives. I know me and another budddy of mine are planning on goin to the nats here in Ohio, so there's 2 more mavericks in the field.
Hey Brad, could you email or post what tires and rollout you ran in 19 turn at new castle? This will be my first time there, so any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Todd Gross
smokefan 03-02-2005, 12:53 PM Brad not sure about this weekend yet either. I know I have had a pretty good time so far this yr. And I really appreciate your help.
BHayes 03-02-2005, 01:11 PM maverick08,
Here is my setup form the last time I ran at New Castle.
Class: 4-cell 19t
Tires: BSR double pink rears, double pink LF, purple-orange RF
Wheelbase: 10.25" (long pod, short front)
Front Springs: Green LF, Red RF (std Wolfe springs)
Caster: 2° LF, 4° RF
Front arm: LF top inner hole, RF lower inner hole (IRS mounts)
Side Shocks: 30 wt, red springs, middle holes on side shock mounts
Center Sock: AE shock, 40 wt, gold silva spring, 3rd hole up, all the way forward
Rear Steer: 0°
T-plate: Finishline firm, center screw removed, mounted offset
Battery location: rear hole on chassis, middle hole on tray adapter
Body/Wing: Protoform Dodge MD/Small Thunder
Motor: Fantom D5 19 turn, timing set at 24°
Rollout: 2.90
You might start with gold side springs, then if the bite comes up, go to reds to free the car up a little. The bite in the track usually comes up a lot form the start of practice to the end of the night.
My car has been pretty fast there, so this setup should be a good starting spot for you. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
maverick08 03-02-2005, 06:45 PM Brad,
Thanks for the info! I'll let you know how it goes!
Later,
Todd
OVALIST 03-02-2005, 09:15 PM Hey Brad
I Noticed You Run Your Center Shock Very Long. What Are The Advantages Of Running It Extended Like This? What Is The Length Eyelet To Ball Cup. Thanks Fellow O5 Racer
B mullins 03-02-2005, 09:19 PM B Hayes:You might start with gold side springs, then if the bite comes up, go to reds to free the car up a little. The bite in the track usually comes up a lot form the start of practice to the end of the night.
Do you reset the tweek/weight when you go to stiffer side springs or do you reset them to where they were?
B
merich401 03-02-2005, 10:49 PM Brad- I am looking forward to running the maverick aswell, Going to start with a different set up then yours to see if i can find something you havent yet. The car will hit the track in a few week. I will post pics when its built
Matt
yokman 03-03-2005, 03:33 PM hey smoke,my car is for sale.holla at me this weekend.i should be there around 2:00.
smokefan 03-04-2005, 03:53 AM Yok will do man!!! See ya Sat.
BHayes 03-04-2005, 08:05 AM OVALIST, I have always liked running a longer center shock. It helps keep the angle more consistent. The shorter the shock, the more the angle changes through the stroke. This changing angle will make the pod become stiffer as it compresses the shock. On flat smooth tracks, I like the nice consistent spring rate provided by the longer shock.
B mullins, When I am changing to stiffer side springs due to bite coming up in the track, then I will re-set the tweak to the same as I had with the softer springs. Sometimes you will need to adjust tweak a little. But I will usually start by setting the tweak back to the same level.
Matt, I'll look forward to seeing how your setups do. I am sure we can learn a lot from each other. There are a lot of setup options on the '05, and there are only so many combinations that one person can try on any given race day.
JPH Racing 03-04-2005, 12:41 PM I posted some more photos up on the site. Brad's car and Rodney Clark's car. Also one of Brad's set-ups. Thanks for the pics guys!
If anyone else would like to send in pics of their Maverick ride, now matter what version it is, please do so! I like a top, right side, left side, and rear photo, and then anything interesting you can come up with. The more in focus the better. And, if you have a slower computer connection, you can always put them on a disc and mail them to me.
Set-ups are another item I'm looking for. If you're running well at your local track, please e-mail me you basic set-up and I'll get it posted right up.
Thanks,
Jake
P.S. Looks like we'll be getting in our first asphalt race of the season this weekend. I'm looking forward to it! Good luck to all the Maverick Crew, wherever you're running this weekend. Let us know how you do!
OVALIST 03-04-2005, 07:25 PM THANKS BRAD
