View Full Version : The MAVERICK OVAL CHASSIS Thread
cneyedog 01-20-2005, 06:09 PM Hey Rich...do you have Ronnie's finger in shape yet? LOL
I'm not touchin that thing, I dont want to be responsible for any reprucussions from the shockwave and green fog that will enuse.
katf1sh 01-20-2005, 06:17 PM yeah troy go sell some more rtr kits! or do some bionic tricks with papa lopez! muahhahahaahahah
David Butts 01-21-2005, 07:11 AM I'm in , I'm in, I'm in, I'm in, I'm in. Oh yeah, Did I mention I made it in in time?
Ah, The scent of paragon in the wee hours of the morning surrounded by lets say, 350 of your friends and fellow racers. See y'all there. 19t sportsman for this wuss. Now if it were just asphalt instead of carpet?
katf1sh 01-21-2005, 06:14 PM i want to say the new car is everything i want in a oval car! i'm hoping that is a good thing? lol
the servo mount is the best thing since sliced bread and store bought woman!
all of this means nothing if it ain't fast on the track! next saturday phil and I will find out!
lots of little items and ideas on this car you cannot see in a picture! so far very cool!
thanks jake and brad for a fine hot rod!!!!!
BA Motorsports 01-21-2005, 06:32 PM Yea Katfish, the servo mount was a good idea, and I really like the new side shock mounts and have always like the curved style design on the right side of the chassis. The '05 MAVERICK H.E. edition is a nice lookin ride, I hope it runs as good as it looks. Jake sent me e mail and said he shipped my new ride out today, he is a good guy that responds to every e mail question I send him, keep up the good work at JAKE'S PERFORMANCE HOBBIES!!!
JPH Racing 01-22-2005, 03:57 PM Yokeman: 2.5 second laps! Wow! 95+ laps in 4 minutes? I'd be dizzy for sure! Let us know how you do.
Mr. Butts: Glad you're in!
Katfish: Are you done building yet? I'll be getting some more pics up on the site next week, to show off the "little things" we've included. And offer some more explanations on how the servo plate works. :)
One thing I've been asked, does the servo plate work on other brands? Yes, it should work just fine! You'll have to drill two holes, and after that you'll have a fully adjustable servo mounting plate.
EHR: Thank you! It gets busy at times, responding to everyone's e-mails and such, but it's my pleasure. I know what it's like to e-mail a question out, and never get a response (it sucks!) ... Let me know what you think of your new ride when you get it!
katf1sh 01-23-2005, 02:10 AM still building....a new front end takes me about 8 full hours to build up half way right, lol. sanding and gluing chassis another 3 hours..trying to figure out what side the battery tray goes on is another 5 hours..calling jake inbetween building 2 more hours..... i may be done in time for the birds! oh mounting the servo was a 4 hour process......not any more! wooooooooooooooooo
burbs 01-23-2005, 07:48 PM by EHR
have always like the curved style design on the right side of the chassis and the thicker graphite.
how thick is the new car jake????
Mike
2.5
you're going to like this car on carpet!! Both Jake and Dave looked really good today..
katf1sh 01-23-2005, 11:16 PM kevin!!!!!!!! wassssssssssup bro? glad to hear about the new car...i get to play with mine saturday. zooooom zoooooom zoooooom
wildman 01-24-2005, 01:24 AM Hey kat, should have mine this week, won't put it together until later in the week though, dirt oval regionals on the 29th. can't wait to get it together!! will let you know the fast set up, got the keys to the track can test any time, so i will send you a fast 19t setup.
Kevin
davepull 01-24-2005, 01:37 AM still building....a new front end takes me about 8 full hours to build up half way right, lol. sanding and gluing chassis another 3 hours..trying to figure out what side the battery tray goes on is another 5 hours..calling jake inbetween building 2 more hours..... i may be done in time for the birds! oh mounting the servo was a 4 hour process......not any more! wooooooooooooooooo
so if your car is taking time to be built right, who are you having do it for yah??????? lol
JPHRacer 01-24-2005, 01:51 AM how thick is the new car jake????
The cars are mic. out at 0.097-0.99 on the ones that I have measured. Its seems thin, but we use the highest quality carbon that we can find. No filler used here. It does have flex but thats one of the reasons it works soo good. IMO.
The car is a rocket.
Once again in Nor-Cal the Mavericks proved to be the fastest cars on the track. I had some run time issues with my fat throttle finger, but was turing some of the fastest and most consistant times of anyone on that track.
Jake's car was just a tic slower them mine but made time. With this being the second run on the cars its not bad. Actually its really amazing if you ask me, but heck I'm a little biased.
Good job to Charlie F for taking the win.
Thanks for the props Koz.
burbs 01-24-2005, 01:59 AM i prefer thinner grafite.. either.100 or .089 .. i think flex in a chassis is a very good tool to make them work.. i think a thicker more rigid chassis will work best, when it is perfect... but how many people ever get a car perfect?? not many if any...
i think chassis flex help the cars work in a way, like faking a better setup... that is why other companies cars seem to work well out of the box...when i ran for KGB, i tested thick and thin.. the thinnest worked the best, and were alot more easy to setup, and alot less picky on setup...
JPHRacer 01-24-2005, 03:21 AM Thats about what we came up with too. With all the testing of different thickness's when doing the prototyping of the 05 car I personally really liked the thinner car much more.
The production 05 H.E. Maverick makes my protoype seem like a toy. Its really an awsome car. All the Nor-Cal guys that have gotton to run the car have all been on a real similar setup as far as springs and oil, and all that good stuff go's. Just tune with tires for your class and let it rip.
Good job Jake and Brad.
DW
It's interesting that you guys bring this up, I'm seeing a lot of the solid chassis cars up for sale in favor of the sliders, and I assumed it was due to the chassis flex issue,I've just got my first slider car (I've always prefered solid chassis) and am amazed how well it rotates from the center out.I wouldn't mind trying a maverick car but no one runs one here and I would be out in left field for sure.
TinManSEP 01-24-2005, 09:53 AM Pepe..with Jake and DW's help set up would not be a problem. They have a basic set up that the car comes with and a few trackside adjustments and your ready to Rock n
Roll.
Tin Man
JPH Racing 01-24-2005, 04:25 PM DW about summed it up ... We did a lot of testing prior to releasing this chassis. Everyone that tried the 2.5mm chassis liked them better. They are as fast or faster, seem to hold the setup better and the setup is easier to find.
I do think in stock and 19, it's not as critical on the thickness (I'm sure some would disagree), but it mod it sure made a big difference.
I still like the 3.0 chassis I have, especially my OPC. But, I'm in love with the new '05 already ... One full out mod race yesterday really made me smile. I knew we did good when DW was on pace last time out, and ripping it up again this time out ... But when I drove my mod car, it confirmed to me that Brad and I did a great job with this design.
DW and I did have fast cars yesterday ... But there is one truth to be told here ... In the Main, DW's fastest lap was a 3.950. Mine was a 3.949. So, by .001 of a second, I had the faster car! But, who's counting! It was awesome that both cars were up to speed. It would have been more awesome if I could have wheeled my car to it's potential (man, was I rusty yesterday! A mod motor in a Maverick is FAST!)
Pepe: Don't be too concerned about being the first one at your track to run a Maverick. There's plenty of help here for setup suggestions and tuning. And, if you haven't checked out the new site: www.swiftracingproducts.com (http://www.swiftracingproducts.com) please do so. There's will be more setups and info being added all the time. I doubt there's another oval chassis MFG with this much info on their site. We try very hard to back up our racers with all the info they can handle! I'm always a phone call or e-mail away ...
yokman 01-24-2005, 04:40 PM jake-well it wasnt quite 90 laps but i mannaged 78 lapsand came in 7 in the main in 4 cell stock.the fast lap times were 2.7 to 3.0. track record got set at 84 laps.wont say who got that 1 though, lol.i was more conserend with wrapping up my touring oval state title, and i did with 1 race left i have already wraped it up.so i will be putting the touring car aside and putting all of my time into my MAVERICK car to get it where i need it.have you guys at MAVERICK ever thought about making a touring oval chassie?
bhays-when are you going to be at new castle agian?i am really serious about running 19 turn and i am going to be in need of some MAVERICK help.as you know the guys that we run with are the real deal (including yourself) and i gotta come correct cause i dont like getting slammed around if ya know what i mean.love my car and dont like seeing it hit for no reason.
anyway hope all the MAVERICK drivers had a good weekend.
yokman 01-24-2005, 05:02 PM jake-thanks for the package you sent me.i really apperiate(sp)it and your teams help.
JPHRacer 01-24-2005, 07:08 PM Hey there buddy Jake. I think it was DW who caught you and Charlie from almost 3/4 of a lap down ready to make run for the lead just to have some dumpage issues.
But hey who's counting.
DW
BHayes 01-25-2005, 07:55 AM yokman,
Good job with the touring car. Now you can focus on the Maverick. I am planning to run at New Castle this weekend in 19t. I posted my 19t setup on here a couple of pages back. That setup should also be a good starting point for your '04 car. Let me know if you have any specific questions. And I'll be glad to help you out if you are racing this Saturday.
j21moss 01-25-2005, 09:21 AM Yep, yokeman and Kevin was the men to beat in Touring car.. great job Jeremy!! now get that Maverick going.. you can't let me beat you with Ben's old L3 with a 96 T-bird body anymore!!! LOL really stick with that car.. Terre Haute is a hard track to get figured out, so now it's on to New Castle.. I know Brad will help ya getting that car going.. I really respect him alot and he does give good advice so take advantage of it... Him and Tony Fox helped me out a ton down at the Snowbirds in 2001 with my ADX car and got me in the A-main so listen and take notes!!!! Brad??? sounds like I'm sucking up??? LOL
I'm still thinking on that 05!!!! well gotta run!!!! Peace out!! "The Dr"
BHayes 01-25-2005, 09:30 AM moss, are you going to be at New Castle this weekend?
Hello fellow Maverick Drivers
The new '05 is a blast and it's easy to work with. How easy? Well, this last sun. was my first time on carpet, my first real spec-19 race, my first oval race since the end of Oct. and my first race with the '05 after just finishing building it the day before.
At the end of the day, I was only 2 tenths off the leader, who has much more experience than me, in a different car.
Plus, my batteries were left overs from last years stock program!
The Maverick '05 is awesome and I can't wait for new cells and asphalt!!!
EW
p.s. shameless plug, see my car at:

yokman 01-25-2005, 05:44 PM moss-thanks had alot of fun this past weekend.you didn't do to bad yourself.track record in truck and 3 or 4 in stock 4 cell.i had to pull off in stock 4 cell cause of a body rub and i just wasnt feeling it after driving touring all weekend.so yes i will be working on getting faster with the pan car for the oval nats.i am going to wait on the OPC 05 to come out before getting a new car.but moss just think if you would of been driving a maverick then maybe you would of won stock also.and besides we need some more MAVERICK cars in new castle to battle with the big boys.will be trying my 04 out in 6 cell stock on feb 26 also so that should be fun too.
BHays-cant make it this weekend.love my car but also my family and if i dont spend a weekend or two with them i'll probley be sleeping on the couch with my cars.lol
you might think about coming to ft wayne on the 26 to try the 05 out on a litte bite smaller track.and its a trophy race.
Eric,
What an awsome car,who does your anodizing?
I believe it's the same guy that Jake uses to anodize all his parts. Jake, am I right about this? What's the company's name?
My '04 had even more green and I was going to get everything green again, but it was going to be pretty pricey for just 6 parts, so I made the responsible choice and opted out this time. Eventually everything will be green again!!!
The paint work is by Moxie Graphics. The pin striping, colors, and numbers are all airbrushed and the logos, (with the exception of the smaller associate sponsors) usually are, but they couldn't be done this time due to time restraints.
ovalboy 01-25-2005, 06:42 PM i m thinking about getting a maverick 05 for 4 cell and talked to a guy that runs the 04 i think. and he says it does not flex good on a short track so i was wondering is the 05 chassis thinner then the 04
burbs 01-25-2005, 07:41 PM o5 is thinner... was 3mm or .120 for the 04 now the 05 is .100 it says the thicknes a few posts ago..
j21moss 01-25-2005, 08:36 PM Brad!!!! U betcha I'll be there.. going to run Legends.. more of my speed.. maybe 4 cell stock.. who knows but not Busch... I spin too many people out  see ya there!!!
katf1sh 01-25-2005, 11:47 PM car is 90% built...need to build up new shocks (all 3) and paint a body (all white)
will be heading to fast track hobbies in south carolina saturday for some laps on the rug! oh yeah and i have to program my rapida speedo! that may take 7 hours! lol
well jake after 5 days of building and phone calls i think i helped you decide on more photos in the instruction manual? ahaaaaaaaaaaahhahahaah
you should have know i don't read instructions..i just look at the pictures!
thanks jake and brad for what looks like a killer hot rod (rusty wallace quote) .....
bill
JPH Racing 01-26-2005, 05:34 PM Yokeman: Congrats on the touring championship!
I have thought about an oval touring chassis, but I've been too busy with other projects. One day! And, you're welcome for the package!
DW: Who's counting! LOL
TN: You were close on Sunday. Another time or two on the rug, and you'll be right there.
Pepe: EW's green anodizing is sweet! We have a place named Milner's Anodizing do the work, they are in Santa Rosa, CA. We've only had one bad batch for far, in the last 4 years ... Too bad DW and AC has some parts melt out on them. But, having a one off custom look is great!
Ovalboy: There's a lot of different ways of looking at it. Without going into a whole lot of explanation, we've gone to 2.5mm on the '05 chassis. The '02, '03 & '04 chassis were all 3.0mm.
Burbs: How ya been?
Mr. Butts: How have you been?
Katfish: Yeah, based on your magazine subscriptions, I'd say pictures is all you look at! LOL It's easier taking your phone calls, than to write a novel's worth of instructions for you my friend! I can't wait to hear what you and Phil think about the new chassis, after you run it this weekend! Got my fingers crossed that your first time out will be as excellent as everyone else's has been!
Everyone: If anyone has any questions regarding the '05 (or any other Maverick), please do not hesitate to post up, or e-mail me, or call me! I give Katfish a hard time, because he needs it, but I enjoy talking chassis tech and helping others with their projects. For e-mails, please be sure to put something "Maverick" or "R/C" in the subject line, there's way too much spam out there ...
David Butts 01-26-2005, 05:37 PM I'm anxious to get my grubby little mits on of the new chassis too. Maybe there will be a used one for cheap at da'birds. Ah I know I'm dreaming but that's how I got my current OPC.
Hey Jake bring some extra shirts too, Bringing any parts?
BMCALLISTER01 01-27-2005, 04:10 AM Alright guys the 05' is almost complete. Any advice on set up for 19t? The 05' will be making it's debut this saturday. The car looks great! You guys have really went that extra mile on this chassis. By the way the track is a 120ft runline with a few bumps. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
BHayes 01-27-2005, 07:49 AM BMCALLISTER01, I have only run my '05 once so far, but it ran very well with this setup...
Track: New Castle, IN - 160ft flat ozite
Class: 4-cell 19t
Tires: Pink rears, Pink LF, purple RF
Wheelbase: 10.25" (long pod, short front)
Front Springs: Red LF, Green RF (std Wolfe springs)
Caster: 2° LF, 4° RF
Front arm: LF top inner hole, RF lower inner hole (IRS mounts)
Side Shocks: 30 wt, red springs, top holes on side shock mounts
Center Sock: AE shock, 40 wt, gold silva spring, 3rd hole up, all the way forward
LR weight: 11.2 oz
Rear Steer: 0°
T-plate: fiberglass, .075", center screw removed, mounted offset
Body/Wing: Protoform Dodge/Small Thunder
This was for a track with a lot of bite. If your track has less bite, start with softer side springs, either blue or gold. But run as stiff as the track will allow. Try going stiffer until the car gets loose, then go back down a step. Also, since your track is shorter, you may want to try a little shorter wheelbase. Maybe use the middle wheelbase setting on the pod. If the corners are tight, go with 2 red springs up front. I ran a green on the RF to help the car push up out of the corners more. But this was for a track with fairly sweeping corners.
Let us know if you have any questions.
I am going to tweak on this setup this weekend. I'll let you all know if I find anything better.
BHayes 01-27-2005, 07:50 AM BMCALLISTER01, one more thing....if your track has short straights, then try a little rear steer. Start with the 1/4° (one notch).
smokefan 01-27-2005, 04:07 PM Brad You have mail!!!!
ovalboy 01-27-2005, 04:35 PM what color alum does the o5 come in?

JPH Racing 01-28-2005, 02:29 PM Well, the aluminum is either black, or blue. But usually not both (unless requested). Or unless you're racing with Jason? :)
Rich: Ronnie made up some "PMF Racing Team" shirts? Sweet!!!!! I can see it now, "PMF Racing Team" on the front, and a picture of a big green gaseous cloud on the back!
Looking forward to the 'Birds .... Less than 10 to go!
To everyone running their Mavericks this weekend, good luck and let us know how you do! Many '05 being run for the first time .... Fill us in please!
