View Full Version : The MAVERICK OVAL CHASSIS Thread
David Butts 03-18-2004, 04:12 PM Well good luck and racing to all the racers I know that are racing just down the road from me this weekend. God knows I'd like to be there(hey I own a maverick too)but work and home matters come first this weekend.
Jake, I was able to salvage the OPC chassis so I wont be needing a new one at this time. It looks as if there will be a buttseyfied(tm) maverick hitting a Florida or Georgia track soon. My other car(brand "A")is working great in stock so the new one will probably be for 19t. I'm setting it up basically with the same setup I run on the other one so maybe I'll be able to compare apples to oranges.
Hey guys I know somebody down there has a laptop, Howabout a play by play on here?
cneyedog 03-18-2004, 06:21 PM Notice: Kat and Rich...P;eeze DO NOT PULL Ronnie's Finger. Thank You, this was a Public Service Message!!!
Tinman, I'll bring ronnie by your trailer ....muuuuuuhahahahaha
Jake, I'll try to keep them inline but ...between katfish, tinman and Phil ....its gonna be tough.....
tony 13 03-19-2004, 03:33 AM when testing the track in the nude what traction compound do you guys prefer?
I can't speak for all Maverick racers, but I perfer Jalapeno flavored body oil!
E.Dub
Team Novice. "Our G-strings get $5 bills!!!"
H&H Racing 03-19-2004, 06:36 PM LMAO....now to get back to racing here...I was watching qualifying here on the speed channel and Darrell Waltrip (the original DW...sorry Dave)....was talking about how the cars today are setup driving off the RR instead of the RF. And I was wondering do our cars drive off the RF or RR and if they drive off the RF how do I get the car to drive off the RR????
Tin Cup
H&H Racing
Shaun, oval pancars drive off the RR..
generally entering is rt.front LR,and middle and out is RR and left front.
95% of the time most don't have a problem getting in ,it's that middle and off speed that is so cruical, keeping up momentum from right before the apex and out is the one of the key 's to fast lap times and effeciency.
And as far as you southern boy's and the Floridian's.. what's up with all the naked B.S. it wouldn't be so bad if you guy's were chicks.....
The OPC rips on outdoor bigger radius type tracks!! STD. pod really free's the car up middle and out and some killer effeciency as well!!
Have fun and good racing this weekend,we'll be on the fastest short track on the West Coast this weekend..
katf1sh 03-19-2004, 11:51 PM daytona update: so far i have been able to keep my clothes on!
phil is top 5 in 19 turn tinman and I are in the weeds...3 rounds tom i wrenched all night! sleep is in order..
JPH Racing 03-20-2004, 02:08 AM Alrighty Gentlemen, let's keep this nude thing in check now! No one wants any nude racers at their track, or race .... Unless the Wing House, Hooters, or Playboy Club is there running at the event ... And, it is disturbing how fast my Locals were to pick up on wanting to race in the nude ... This bothers me! LOL
Mr Butts: Glad to hear the battery slots came around to your liking ... the Previous owner must have had too much coffee when filing? I'm not sure about the whole "buttseyfied" deal? Is this good, or bad? :)
Rich: Do your best for me man, keep them in line! Tell Ronnie I said hello. Hope you guys have a great race weekend!
Tony & T.N.: Come one guys! You're my Hommies ... But, I don't want to see y'all naked at the track!
Katfish: Get outta the weeds, and drag Tinman outta there with you! Tune them Mavericks and get them towards the front of the pack with Phil! I know you guys can do this! How's Don doing?
H & H: It's different with Stock, 19 Turn and Mod. They are similar, but each needs a different mind set when tuning. Stock is about driving with the throttle pinned. The car doesn't truly drive off on any tire, because it's not being over powered or sliding on throttle. 19 Turn starts getting into driving with the throttle on some tracks, but most of the time it's driven pinned or with a slight blip in the turn. Tuning with the right rear or left rear will start showing up ... In Modified, were the power really comes on strong and the rear tires can spin and slide, tuning with the left rear or right rear comes into play.
I typically tune around how the left rear drives the car through the middle and off the turn. Moving it in will loosen the car, moving it out will hook it up. I also tune with left rear tweak to get the car to drive off the turn properly.
Anyway, there's a lot of ways to look at it and it's a personal tuning choice. Whatever makes the most sense to you, stick with it. As time goes on, you see there's a lot of different ways to look at the tuning options we have on these cars.
MobileMikeV 03-20-2004, 11:02 AM H&H: I have always set the tweak to zero or close to it, and used the LR, side shock oil, and side shock and LF spring the change how the car comes off the turn. If it still needs a little push off i just put a little tweak in it, but not more than 1/2 turn.
Jake, are you going to show for the nats?
katf1sh 03-20-2004, 08:43 PM updates at daytona:
phil owen ended up sitting 5th overall in 19 turn
tony padilla is 6th team daytona
tinman 12th overall
tim halpin 11th overall
rich is like 14th overall team daytona
ed is like 17th overall team daytona
troy is like 18th overall team daytona
katf1sh is 20th overall or shotgun in the B main! team weeds
every driver in the B main has 33 laps
2 drivers in the A went 35 mike boylan is 2nd overall
billy bruce is TQ with a 2 year old ADX chassis! team daytona
the top 2 drivers used snowbird handout motors and i think at least 6 guys in the A used ultrbird motors!
the other 8 guys in the A went 34 laps! very close racing on a monster sized track!
i did manage to TQ touring oval though,lol..
i will post the results sunday around 5 pm
big don made the A in 12th scale but had some tough luck in the stock class as did ronny who is 14th overall in stock and 21st in 19 turn..hank has had some bad luck also..phil is our only shot for the win tom...we are doomed,lol..the weather is awesome! 80 deg with a nice breeze!
i'm taking suggestions from other maverick pilots on what to do for center shock oil and spring when you encounter a severly bumpy track..
phil is still using his 03 maverick with a off set pod the rest of us are using the 04 and i bet i'm the only one still using a straight up pod and the extreme battery tray..lol i will need to get a outdoor car asap..lol
H&H Racing 03-21-2004, 12:09 AM Thanks guys for your response and info......I think the only problem I ever had in the past was always in the center of the corner...always to tight... do you guys think I should try...I have the silva t-plate but the old TC3 shock as the middle shock...any suggestions...or should I run naked around the track to get a real feel about the track...LOL
Ovalman19 03-21-2004, 02:26 AM Kat, aren't you a National Champion? I'll never forget you telling me about the kid at franks who asked you about that and you're response: "Kid, i'd rather win the stock money race tonight then the norrca carpet nats in 4 cell stock"....Classic Katf1sh....Good luck in the main.
katf1sh 03-21-2004, 04:05 PM that is the the truth curtis! lol where are my castor blocks kid?
ok the racing is over...
tq billy bruce started from the pole but ended up near the rear of the field. tony padilla got punted off track early and recovered to get 6th or 7th..phil owen also got punted off track and ended up in the middle somewhere.. mike boylan from the horn checked out and never looked back! rich did win the B! the maverick pilots didn't fair well..sorry jake! i won touring oval though,lol...oh and i won a hat in the wing house raffle..racing again next week just not sure if it will be on carpet or asphault yet.. the A and B mains weren't the cleanest i have seen but not bad overall...peace me sleepy  pictures and results will be posted on the thunder web page by tuesday..
Ovalman19 03-21-2004, 06:07 PM Sorry Katf1sh, the idea was good but the cost was to big...i'm just going to use KSG ones...haha...unless you know of someone who would be interested in a sweet design for caster blocks, the idea is dead.
Curtis.
JPH Racing 03-21-2004, 06:51 PM Katfish: Thanks for the race updates! Sorry to hear the Maverick Pilots didn't fair well this weekend ... That's racing! Congrats to Mike Boylan!
Curtis: E-mail and fill me in a little on your idea ...
JPH Racing 03-21-2004, 06:54 PM Shoot, I almost forgot! Congrats to Katfish for his win in Touring Oval!
Ovalman19 03-21-2004, 07:14 PM Jake: YGM

bigdon18 03-21-2004, 10:56 PM jake,
Daytona was fun,, didnt get no love in the heat races,, ended up running the b main,, then looped it on lap 2 then came back from the back to finish 2nd. then i also finished 2nd to kat in touring oval, and 6th in the 12thscale amian,,, so Bigdon did bring home some wood,, all in all a fun week at the track, with a great group of guys i call my friends sometimes,,,lol.. , with alot of ups and downs.. but in the main my maverick was rolling,, but driver made a bad choice and tried stick it in the main,,,, should be called slick it.. boy was it loose... but once it burned off the car was rolling.... keep getting faster at the end.. looked at the lap times after the race,, i was the fastest car at the end of the race and realing in the leader but time ran out. so iam very happy with my car and results for the first time at that track, and my first time running the other classes.
BIGDON
TinManSEP 03-22-2004, 05:28 PM Katfish was right, had to find more speed and little more from the center off. Made a few adjustments and got faster by the main, had a solid 3rd place car till the leader crashed (Ed S. was the fastest man on the track) but did manage to go 34 which would have put me in the "a" main, but then again Boylan stole the show!!
"04 is closer now!!
Carpet with the "Kat" this weekend , will have a new report from the "DNA" couch...LOL
Tin Man
JPH Racing 03-23-2004, 12:31 PM Ovalman: Interesting idea! I'm surprised no one produced it.
Don: Well, that's racin'! Cool that you brought home some hardware.
Tinman: That Boylan character is something else! Fast! I'm glad to hear you made some headway with the '04. I heard the track was not easy to tune for, because of the racing surface. Good luck on the carpet this weekend!
Ovalman19 03-23-2004, 02:22 PM Well, if you know of anyone who would like to, shoot me an email.
Curtis.
JPH Racing 03-25-2004, 12:02 PM I put up a couple new asphalt set-ups on the website.
I know Katfish and Tinman are heading to the carpet this weekend. Kevin, Dave, George, and I are heading to a banked asphalt track. Who else is racing this weekend?
Jake
DEO RACING 03-25-2004, 01:30 PM I'm headed down to Ormand to race this weekend with the 04 Maverick, practiced last night car seems good, might need a little more from the middle off, overall car seems stable.More info to follow after this weekend.
Phillip
shawnleary 03-25-2004, 04:09 PM Racing tomorrow night for second point series with the 04 Maverick. I've run personal bests with this car the last few times out at Hobby World. I'm a believer.
bigmattg 03-25-2004, 05:06 PM Thanks for the set up help KOZ! My speedworld time was just one lap away from the track record!! (in stock) I need just to be 4 seconds faster and I would be track record holder. This has to be the best flat track oval bull ring in the west. My OPC is the best car that I have ever run. Changes show up and are easy to feel. My set up for Speedworld is Purple all around. Wolf red on right and green on left side fronts. In back Jake's pod. The springs were Blue center truck spring and Gold springs both side on Silva side shocks. Pinion was 32 teeth with a spur of 100. Needed a bigger spur but didn't bring it. It was a low turn out in stock but FUN anyways. Hope to see you in April.
H&H Racing 03-26-2004, 12:20 PM Looking forward to heading to my old hometown track of Delta speedway this weekend and mix it up on the banks of the DELTA. Hope I have a good setup and will be hunting for my first win in a maverick car. See all the racers heading to delta early sunday morning.
Shaun

matt you welcome bro.. anytime!! next time i'll get you the track record!!!
cneyedog 03-26-2004, 11:21 PM had to find more speed and little more from the center off. Made a few adjustments and got faster by the main, had a solid 3rd place car till the leader crashed (Ed Shaffer was the fastest man on the track)
Yeah tinman it was a no slouch b-main for sure ..... .... I woulda loved to have made the A (dont we all) but had a great time racing @ D.I.S. ..... Ed caught me and passed me clean for the lead before he got caught up in a mess in turn 2 with like 30 sec to go ..... I was able to take back the top spot and hold on for the win .... but there was this guy in a home depot car behind me i could see him back there ..... lurking.....
i need to get over to GT brey this year and bang fenders with you guys in Tampa.
see ya,
Rich
btw, Jake....... ronnie sends his regards .....
katf1sh 03-28-2004, 02:23 AM well a better night of racing for me! finished 3rd behind phil..was reeling phil in last few laps hard! congrats to tony with the win..i'm happier now that i am on the same lap again,lol..i think phil is still looking for that one thing? like curly in city slickers!
JPH Racing 03-29-2004, 12:05 PM Shawn: How did the racing end up for you?
Matt: Congrats on the win at Speedworld!
Katfish: Nice! Sounds like some close racing between the Maverick pilots! But, I thought you and Tinman were heading to the rug last weekend?
Nor-Cal info: Kevin Osmon set a new track record at Delta Speedway yesterday. He TQ'ed and won the 4 cell mod class, his OPC was on rails! Anthony Crivelli won the 19 Turn class with his '03 Maverick. Nice work Boys!
shawnleary 03-29-2004, 02:50 PM Not so good over here, didn't get it dialed in for this past Friday. Will be for this Friday.
H&H Racing 03-29-2004, 03:49 PM Anthony is my hero.....he was like a veteran out there in the 19 turn class and it was his first 19 turn race. Good Job Anthony !!!!!!!!!
Tin Cup & JJ
Hank80 03-30-2004, 09:19 AM Jake,
Got everything yesterday. Will be starting on it this week. Thanks alot, you and your shop out there are great!
Henry
TinManSEP 03-30-2004, 10:49 AM Jake..Katfish missed his nite on the "Dna" couch!!! Ran some Rug on Sunday, stayed on the lead lap almost all day, car getting better, the more I run it, the more I seem to learn. It is becoming easier to feel the smallest changes. Now, if iI can just understand the changes....LOL
Tin Man
JPH Racing 03-30-2004, 12:12 PM Shawn: Racing is like that ... You'll get it dialed in this weekend!
H&H: Anthony is my new hero too! At least for this week! Thank to you and JJ for all the help with the track prep, the surface was very raceable on Sunday! Now, we just have to get you two up to speed!
Hank: Oh no, thank you! Please let me know if you have questions during assembly.
Tinman: Did he miss a night on the couch for safelty/health reasons? LOL The '04 is a little different tuning wise than the '03. But, it's faster overall once you get things dialed in. I think the biggest changes come from the repositioning of the side shocks and the battery weight being so far back. That's what gives it a slightly different feel while tuning.
tony 13 03-30-2004, 02:09 PM That was an awsome day of racing. thanks to all of you guys,Jake, George, Dave and the rest of the crew for loaning me the right parts and getting me dialed.
H&H thanks to you for a great day as well, its much easier to compete with a bunch of guys who know how to drive. for the most part it was a very clean day of racing. thanks also for the track prepping like jake said it was very drivable and seemed to get better as the day went on.
Where was team novice? I was hoping they could make it. Maybye next time? See you at the CAT.....
Hope to see all of you guys out there at the GP race on sunday I cant wait for more maverick oval action.
H&H Racing 03-30-2004, 08:59 PM Just set both the cars up a little too loose for the main.... I shouldn't have put that turn into the center spring....I took it out and ran 10 perfect laps after the race.... It was our pleasure to wash up that track. "If we wash it, they will come"...
Tin Cup
OVALIST 03-31-2004, 09:19 PM If You Clean It Will Be There?
tony 13 04-01-2004, 11:38 PM whos heading out to the gp race? hey jake, any work on the size or shape of the track?
P.S. ill be by the shop friday for some parts. set aside a chassis for the nitro car i have some work to do friday night. see ya guys soon
rccarmaverick 04-02-2004, 12:26 AM Hey DW!! Thanks for building me all that horsepower lately, mod has been a big change for me! My one piece is fast!!!! Thanks Jake and KOZ for the help also, soon i will be front runner, so be on your toe's guys!!!!!!!! George.
JPH Racing 04-02-2004, 02:08 AM H&H: Free is fast, loose is loose! You guys will get it all figured out.
Tom: "If you clean it, we'll be there" Makes sense to me! Are you coming over tot he GP Race??
Anthony: I'll be there to help out in the morning, but I don't get to race this time :(
You'll be up late wrenching on that nitro car of yours ... nice bent chassis!
George: George-is-in-da-house! What up! You've been doing great in mod, like a duck in sand ... or was that a duck in water? I can't wait to see what you got up your sleeve for Kev and DW this weekend!
Jake
D.W., A.C., Team Novice is having a meeting Sat. night to get ready. You should bring the NTC3 over. I can remove pieces from the bent chassis while you bolt them on to the new one. You'll get done twice as fast!!
My Maverick and XXX-s are ready and I'll be trying out Matt S. 1/12 scale!!
What's even more disturbing is that Matt will be driving my NTC3 in oval!!!!
Should be a fun day!
OVALIST 04-02-2004, 02:55 PM No Can't Make The Gp Race. Got Family Stuff This Weekend. Catch Everyone At The Next Race.
Hank80 04-05-2004, 08:43 AM Jake,
Started on the '04 this weekend, should have it done by Friday, but that depends on work. So far everything is going very smooth. Looking forward to running it and getting it pointed in the right direction.
Henry
tony 13 04-05-2004, 02:18 PM Great race day guys. thanks jake, DW and george for the help. I had troubles all day but the outcome was decent with a third place finish. I have a lot to learn with this oval stuff but I am having an awsome time. DW ,George, how did you guys end up in mod?
Had a great times the weekend at Peterson Cat despite being bit hard by the Glitch/Someone's radio on in the pits monster. At least I learned that my chassis is working finally. Wish the new body didn't get ruined though. Only had one race with it.
Anyway, I have a question. What is the name of the radio that can give the car full steering in case you get turned around? I hate having to be turn marshalled just becase my car can't turn around without taking 3 seconds to do so and causing a hazard. I looked at the high end Futaba and the JR R1, but the sites didn't mention anything about this feature.
Thanks everyone.
TN,
Not sure about the jr's but I know the Futaba's have it,look at either the 3PJ or 3PK,it's defintly a good feature to have.
kevina250 04-05-2004, 07:05 PM Yes the R-1 has a dual rate switch that will give you 100% steering. You can even adjust it lower to your specifications. Heck you can adjust anything on it for your needs anyway.
parrott88 04-05-2004, 07:24 PM How is this car doing on concrete? Interested in the car
