Well, it was a long night at the club race ... Went to bed at 4:00am, and the jack hammers started at 8:30 ... The hotel is refurnishing some of their rooms, starting with the tile floors in the bathrooms.

Anyway, I'll leave what the finishing order was to the other sites. My head is cloudy and all the names are running together. I will say this, the racing has been more than a little rough, for just about everyone. Most likely 95% of the oval drivers are searching for a set-up they feel comfortable with. Some major names did not make the A's in the club race! Guys are getting frustrated and it shows on the track.

The track has so much bite it's unreal. They have been logging the laps, and between on-road and oval (only counting the drivers with personals transponders) there was already 100,000 laps on the track by yesterday morning!

We're in the same boat as everyone else, scratching our heads and wondering what to try next. I've got some things to try this morning in practice, but my car is off the pace so far.

Dave's car is coming around well. We did some changes to it that really helped and it's getting much closer. Dave lead his main (c) for a few laps last night, until the crashing slowed him down.

Phil's car is turning some good laptimes and he only ran the 1st heat then went to bed. He made the B.

Tinman's been struggling, but working hard to figure this track out. He's getting closer.

Katfish had his mod car running well in the early am practice after the club race. Finally finding a set-up that let the car get through the turns.

Dan's stock car is turning really well, but he needs to fins some straight speed.

Like I said though, no matter what brand they are running, everyone is having troubles. There's only a few guys who have the track figured out so far, and they're not giving away any secrets!

I'm sure the speeds will come up today, the big dogs are really giving it there all and earning their pay at this race. It's a challenge that will make winning this event even more special.

Time to wrench on the cars!
Jake
JPHRacing001@aol.com

I'd also like to thank everyone who has stopped by our pits to say hello and check out the cars. The positive feedback is awesome, guys are impressed, and it's been great talking to racers from all over the USA.

And, on top of being a nice guy, Danny B can belt out the National Anthem! It was totally cool and the applause he got afterwards rocked the house.

Let the Maverick guy DOMINATE the birds this year! Everybody will get it figured out for sure.

Ok, here's the rundown after the 1st round. These may not be accurate though, there were a couple sheets missing ...

touring oval--Bill Sell
4 cell stock--Adam Brown
1/12 mod--Phil Marabella
sportsman 19--Steve Goemans
expert 19--Brian Ziegler
6 cell factory--Sean Cochran
1/12 19--Sonny Brown
4 Cell pro mod--Andy McClellan

They chassis guys are earning their pay this weekend, as are the motor men. The speeds are starting to come up and guys are slowly getting dialed. Some have the cars looking strong int he turns. Others are "doing it on the motor" ... and the rest are still hunting.

We're in the still hunting group. Things we had luck with last night, didn't pan out. We're having fun, but feeling the pinch as time starts ticking down. A lot of other racers are in the same boat, guys are getting frustrated and some of the heat racing is down right nasty.

The track now has something like 150,000 laps on it. The fumes are amazing! LOL

Mike and crew continue to do a great job, 52 heats of oval racing (I think) and they are running it like clock work.

Ok, I'm back to wrenching, just wanted to give everyone who reads our Maverick thread an update!

The second round is in the books. 9.5 hours to run 104 races. A few racers are really happy, most are wanting more out of the cars.

The top guys so far are:

touring sedans-- Bill Sell (Katfish!)
4 cell stock--Adam Brown
1/12 mod--Phil Marabella
sportsman 19--Steve Goemans
Expert 19-- Brian Ziegler
6 cell factroy--Frank Polimeda
1/12 19 turn-- Jason Schreffer
4 cell mod-- sheets not posted and I was too tired to wait any longer! But I think it was still Andy Mac, but it may have been Greg Honeycut?

One more round left tomorrow. It's crunch time now!

Heading to bed, it's 4:00am.

Well, I don't think the order changed much during the final qualifier ... The track was a lap to two laps slower tonight. Too many laps has taken it's toll on the carpet and it's going away.

Tha mains will be interesting because of the racing surface. Cars that were dialed, aren't anymore.

If you guys have any questions on the race, or happenings at the race, let me know and I'll get you the scoop.

4:00 am and it's bed time.

Burbs: Sorry, I didn't get a chance to check my e-mails until the whole deal is over ... the result papers are gone. I'm sure it will be up on the websites soon. Sorry again.

Well, the whole deal is finally done! Not sure who won each class? But the highlights were Frank Polimida winning 6 cell, Adam Brown winning stock, and I believe Ziggy won 19 turn, Phil Marrabela won 1/12 mod ... I forget who won 4 cell mod? It's been a long weekend and I'm beat!

They say the track had 250,000 plus laps on it in 6 days. It was in use 24 hours a day ... and we had a great time!

rick talbot won 19 turn expert class...i had a lousy time on the track in every class, lol. but i had a ton of fun off the track! by sunday i needed a b4 buggy to get around..mad bumps and jumps..team maverick as a whole struggled big time all week! we all tried to figure out the track and in the end the track whooped us! lol it was great meeting dave wert and hanging out with jake all week! charleys steak house wed night made the car action web page so that was cool. my hat is off to all the A main winners..if you were not there you just dont know how hard it was to wheel a car around that track come sunday! weather was mid 70's all week til saturday night when it went from 70-33 deg in 12 hours..needless to say the track warped badly. in 12th mod on-road cars were catching air and actualy flying off the track!

burbs..if it wasn't for touring car i was out to lunch hard core! in the end i got no love and broke in the A..lol next year i'm thinking legends is my speed? i'm tired..i'll be looking forward to the local carpet track and a nice surface to run on again..it made alot of front runners look like rookies again..peace!

I had a good car on wed, then all of a sudden somehow we had whoops and tripples to deal with on the carpet track. Maby if I had praticed some off-road before I left I could have done better but oh well.

I'm just glad that everyone else struggled as much as we did. It wasnt just me. :)

I have to say I had a great time hangin out and meeting all those east coast Maverick guys. The infamous Katfish, Tin-Man, Phil... And all the other guys that went to charlies. I cant wait for next year, for both the racing and Kats pranks.

JPH: did you get a chance to try the stiffer LF spring?

katf1sh
02-09-2004, 09:17 PM
to give you an indication of the track conditions on sunday. try placing a garden hose under the carpet about every 4 feet at your local carpet track. that is what we all had to deal with. on top of that pour about 40 gallons of paragon in the corners and you will be close. i honestly can say i have never gone out to run on a carpet track and not put some kind of additive on all 4 tires. in order to make the car work you had to cut a fresh rf tire something hard like a double purple or a black and not put a thing on it. after 4 minutes it would come back like bubble gum. alot of cars would go into the corner and just roll over. and that was with 2.20 tires and the legal 5 mm ride height. anything you ever thought you knew about carpet racing would not apply here. very frustrating indeed. it may be time for the birds to look into another surface to race on? maybe 4 days on road replace carpet and 4 days oval racing? my hats off to the ksg kisbey camp, they had alot of cars and motors in the show. next year it's touring oval masters class for me! ah ah ahha

i still have my ATM receipt it had a bad attitude as well? lol

Sorry for the mix up on the results above, guys I just don't do good on 4 to 6 hours a night sleep for an entire week ... Ziggy won the 4 cell mod main.

Speaking of the mains, Mr. Polimida can wheel a car! That dude is awesome! The 6 cell mod cars were clocked in at 54+mph down an eighty foot straight!

Our results:
Phil Owen-- 3rd in the Expert 19 D main
Jake Rosen-- 4th in the Expert 19 E main
Steve Platt-- 8th in the Expert 19 F main
Bill Sell-- 4th in the Expert 19 G main
Dave Wert-- 3rd in the 4 Cell Pro Mod E main
Steve Platt-- 4th in the 4 Cell Pro Mod E main
Dan McClinton-- 7th in the 4 Cell Stock G main

Well, that's how the Maverick Crew finished up the week. Not great, but not too bad considering there were a lot of big name drivers who struggled with the track just like we did. I'd venture to guess, that out of 360 oval entries, less than 10% really got their cars working well for the whole week ...

The best part was off the track. I had a great time getting to know everyone a little better and laughing so hard at times I was in tears. Phil (yes, I put your name 1st on the list), Steve (the Ol' Wise One), Bill (the one and only Katfish), Ronnie (pull my finger), Rich (please don't pull Ron's finger)), Mike Boylan and the SB Crew, and everyone else who I'm still too tired to remember!

Forgot to mention the "mad cow cafe" and the food poisoning! So many people came down with it. It's awesome having food right there, cooked "fresh", but the price some people paid was too much!

I got a minor case of it on the flight home ... either that or I was having Paragon withdraws!

Other than the track, Mike and crew did a great job with this years race. There's always room for improvement and I'm sure 2005 will be even better.

JPH: did you get a chance to try the stiffer LF spring?

We tried running every setup in the book, everything was the same thing. I ended up running for the main a copper Lr spring, and a red Rr spring.

I have no idea what the a-main guys were doing to get around the track, but it really dosent matter, becase I dont ever to expect to encounter track conditions like these ever again.

I totaly fogot about Pull my finger Ronnie, and dont pull ronnies finger Rich.

I dont think I can ever go into charlies ever again without testing the air.

No garden hoses under the carpet? :jest:

JPH: The stiff LF spring helps alot at our track. Maybe not at the Birds, but try it at you home track. It adds a little LF, especially when the tray is all the way back, it leans on that LF and the stiffer spring gives it something to rest on. I run a purple LF and a green RF at ricks. I just noticed that in a couple of the setups on the site the springs were reversed from that.

I would give it a try though, three cars use it at my home track. One holds the 19t open record, another the 19t spec record and soon to be 19t open as well, and the other held the 19t open record.

JPHRacer
02-10-2004, 11:53 PM
Yah I had a stiffer Copper LR spring, and a red RR spring. It didnt make a difference, the grip that the track had was more then any other carpet track has or probably will ever have. Tuning for it was more then just spring it was tires, too, gluing the outside edges of the right side tires helped, but also having super hard pinks helped too.

Hey burbs, there are two JPH's. Me JPHRacer and Jake JPH Racing. Jake used my computer at the birds to give some updates, probably a little confusing.

I run for TM tires and am very happy with them. Jake runs BSR tires.

BMCALLISTER01: Post your setup and I or some of the other guys can give you some pointers. But otherwise, stiffer center spring, thicker center shock oil, harder t-bar, rear-steer, Longer RF upper arm, raise one hole in the arm mounts...

BMC: There are plenty of set-up on our website, www.jphracing.com in the '03 and '04 Maverick section. Like Dave said, if you post you basic set-up, we be glad to offer some suggestions.

Mike: We typically run a softer right front spring compared to the left front spring, on most tracks that we race on. At the 'Birds, running a stiffer right front spring helped to keep the right front from digging in and causing traction rolls.

Katifsh: Only 40 gallons of Paragon? It would be cool to know how many gallons were actually used that weekend. And, to know how many tires were used also ... 300,000+ laps was a lot!

JPHRacer
02-11-2004, 04:48 PM
Whoops, I totally missed the front spring part.

If you go to a stiffer LF spring it will take steering away from the car on corner exit. And just like jake said, if you run to soft of a RF spring it will only make the car traction roll even more. Which would only make it woorse.

But for normal asphalt racing I allmost allways run a red RF and a green LF.

Yep even I strayed over to the maverick area several times over the four days that I was there. Jake and David are truely some nice people to talk too. I bought a used OPC 04 while there and may have to whip it out once or twice at the old local track here.

Allthough I wasnt runnig a maverick at da'birds I do know almost all the guys around Fl. that do Like Tinman, Katf1sh, Dan McClinton, Phil Owen and the new guy Shawn Leary. So I watched most of the mains with the drivers I knew so I could cheer them on except Dan's, I was in it! That OPC sure would look good with an Pink yellow and white body on it. Where's my paint?

David: I was wondering when you would figure out what LF meant ...

Rich: Oh, sure, after a few days rest now you're ready to do it all over again! Well, me too! as for being nice without you having a Maverick (yet), hey good people are good people, no matter what their poor choice of chassis is ... LOL (just joking, please don't start a war on that one!!)

Katfish: Thanks for the nice words. 3000 miles is a long road trip for a weekly show, but I'll tell ya Dave and I are tempted to give it a try! I know we would enjoy running with you guys at a more laid back race ... Were we could trade some paint and run door to door. Kevin will be at the next one, family came first this year.

Mr Butts: Welcome to the other side! I hope you put that OPC together and run it soon! I'm sure you'll be bringing it out more often after the first race day ... it will become your primary car! I noticed your paint job in the main, while watching Dan's run. I give you a lot of credit for running "Butts" on the quarter panel .... Doesn't that give the race announcer too much ammo?

Aha! You can never give the announcer too much ammo. A bad mention is still a mention  . Actually with the longer wheelbase of the OPC(compared to my L4O)I may have to give it a try since longer wheelbase cars are smoother on big tracks. My local track is a big one. But with Phil running the slider chassis(he's my hero) I'll just have to have one of those too. One can never have too many cars in their stable. Well yes one actually can!???

Well, I've been to the Jake's Performance Hobbie's website looking at the different MOC's over-and-over again, and I will finally be buying one!!! I've decided to buy the '04 MOC O.P.C. chassis with the performance pod, because I like a nice solid chassis with very little flex, so that's the one that fits my liking. I will be the first at my home track to have any version of the MOC chassis so it'll be hard to get setup tips, so i'll have to get some tips from you veteran MOC chassis drivers once I get it, which will hopefully be in a couple of weeks.

thanks!

Good choice,I had been out of oval racing for about 13 yrs till recently.I had a L4 and bought a used moc 03 chassis.I converted the car over and the car is running great i have raced twice now,and last friday i had my car hooked up.I had the fastest car there and was on a my way to setting a track record and laying down the fastest lap times. But since ihave been out of the hobby for so long i got to get use to driving in traffic and get my skills back..lol I had everyone looking at my car, talking about how smooth it was through the corners.I did nothing to my motor except throw a new set of brushes in and break it in.I all i got to say is when i get use to turning left again, watch out the track record will be mine.I see a moc 04 chassis in the very new future.

Hello everyone, and thanks for pullin' the thread back to the front page! LOL

Dave: Too many cars? No such thing!

Big Don: I'll get back to you in the morning! Thanks for the mail. (And, I don't mind if an oval guy feels the need to drive a taxi cab every now and then ... I'm gonna try some road course again this summer, it's good for the brain to turn right and left every now and then!)

Justin: Whenever you're ready, let me know. You will get help with set-ups, that's no problem. We have plenty of smart guys on the Maverick Crew who can dial in a chassis. We'll be posting more set-ups and info on the site soon, keep an eye on it.

Katfish: What's up Kat!?! Are you racing this weekend?

Brian: Awesome man! I'm glad you're doing so well with the '03, you'll be posting that track record soon. The skills will come back soon enough. Traffic can be tough at times, but it sure makes racing fun when you've got the fastest car! LOL

KSG Vs Maverick? Well, KSG has a great car, no doubt about it. It's won just about every major race the last two years, there are some big name guys who run it and make it work really well. Not to mention, Andy and Jim (the owners) really know their stuff. Nice people too.

We're one of the little companies in the oval market. I take pride that we have a great product, for a great price. And, that it does so well at so many local races week in and week out across the USA. We haven't got any big name guys running our chassis (yet) but I don't pay anyone either, or hand a lot out free cars. In the end, you guys will pay for that kind of stuff. I think it's better that the average local racers gets a good deal on a quality product, than have them pay a higher price so a hot dog can get a free car ...

Ok, technically speaking, our chassis has some advantages. Stiff chassis and ultra adjustable for all types of tracks. It can be tuned to go as fast, or faster, than any other chassis on the market. Period.

Wow, I'm long winded tonight ... see what happens when the wife works late? Got time to type! (Tinman, that one was for you!)

Katfish: I haven't downloaded the schedule yet, this computer doesn't have excel. I'll do it in the morning. Sponsorship form? Is there a lot to fill out? If so, I'll have Dave take care of it! LOL

Looking forward for your project to get underway, happy to be a supporter!

Steve: What type of track have you been running on? What do you think is making the car bounce? Are there bumps just at the ends of the straights? Or all through the straights and the car only bounces at high speed? Is the chassis bottoming out? Is the body hitting the ground? Maybe to thick on the center shock oil?

We stock the Silva Concepts t-plates, I think the work very well (and have the rear steer options included).

But, it's hard to say that you should switch to them, without knowing more about the situation.

Steve right? If so you run at branford and caps are used there. Do you balance your tires? Those heavy caps are usually waaaaaayyyy out of ballance and that'll be much more noticeable at higher rpm. Just a thought. I have'nt seen it mentioned but I balance all my tires just because. Hey I've never lost a race because my tires were balanced so it cant hurt.
