Oval racing in Ft. Wayne both this Friday the 27th and Sunday the 29th. Come Saturday for the real auto racing indoors at the Coliseum, and stay for the R/C racing on Sunday. Last year, Tony Stewart showed up unannounced and ran midgets indoors at the Coliseum. Won his feature, if I recall.

What classes do you run and any rules?

sheath
12-28-2002, 01:53 PM
The classes right now are:
6-cell stock pan car
4-cell 19 turn pan car
6-cell open
Stock Touring cars
Gear Box sprint cars
Bolink All Star sprint cars
1/12 4-cell modified
Stock Trucks

But since the track is new to the oval racing scene, they are open for suggestions, and want to run what the people want. They will run a class if at least 3 people show up that want to run it.

That's tough to say... this will be the first Sunday Oval race since the track opened, so there is no history to go by. We're breaking new ground!

What are the popular oval classes on both friday nights and when you do race on sunday? Thanks.

Six cell stock pan cars and stock touring cars are the 2 most popular classes so far. Racing on Fridays starts at 7:00 PM, and on Sundays at 1:00 PM, with doors open at 10:00 AM. You can check the results from the past few weeks on the website, and get an idea of what is running. We have a website for Summit Raceway now, as well as SARC. Use the same URL (www.fwsarc.8m.com) and choose either from there. I don't know about the interest in 4-cell... if people want to run it but just haven't yet, or if there is not much interest, or what.

Great race friday night in the A main touring car race on the oval. Only 1/2 second seperated the cars finishing first through third! I kept thinking Jason Sloniker was going to blow the race since he was a new racer and under so much pressure from Rob Dorseif and Phillip Zimmerman the entire race instead he showed everybody what a great competitor he is and is going to be tough to beat in the future. Overall, the new guys I've seen race have been very impressive and I can see there is going to be a lot more of this kind of racing at Summit Raceway in the future. Congratulations on the win Jason and thanks to the others for making that such a great race to watch. We'll be talking about that one for some time.

ELR,
After thinking about it for a while, I would say the best thing to do would be to come out to the track during some of the races and check out the cars and equipment you are thinking of buying. Some people will tell you to buy the best of everything, but I am a firm believer that you don't need top of the line stuff, especially if you are just starting out. The biggest gains in results you will see initially, will be from learning how to adjust your car setup to work well, and practice your driving skills. But then again, I just re-read your post, and realize that you have run nitro cars in the past, so you probably not just starting out.
The TC3 would probably be a good choice. Lots of other racers have TC3s, so it will be easy to get advice or help with that. The Losi XXXS would be the other choice as a popular car. The newest batteries are Nickle Metal Hydride rather than Nicad, and they should have a charger that is designed to charge them. If you get a RTR version, the charger and batteries should be the only things that you would need to purchase separate.
If you have any more questions, feel free to post them here, or you can e-mail me by clicking the e-mail icon at the bottom on this post. Hope to see you racing soon!

Thanks, Ive been to the track to watch ,well 1 time and a couple of times last year . Thats why I posted on this tread when I did the nitro thing but wanted to get into racing Electric which seems to be more popular in FW we went to all the local stores ,did alot of reading on a # of different forums ,made a decision- and headed to one of the local store but thats the problem and why IM asking , now like you said some will tell you buy the best of everything thats for sure and what happened to me and why I ended up in nitro fun but a pain in the backside at times if you know what I mean , I just want a solid car to run indoors and out and Im not that impressed with the TC3 I did build a kit but sold it never bought electronics for it ((( maybe I should be considering a Pan car simple construction seem to hold up well))) any way because I wasent willing to buy the"best of everything " and was made to feel you buy the best or your wasting your time. I JUST WANT TO Have fun and learn even being 44  . Pan or TC If you were me needing to buy everything + the right tires/springs/gears for a good starting point for Summit what would you buy having been there done that.. Thankyou Ed

I paid $240 at hobbyland for a Losi XXXS+ and built the car, put it on the track and am thrilled with how nice and easy it was to drive. The problem is I drove another one recently that belonged to someone else and I couldn't hardly drive it. My point is set-up is really important with these cars when you race on carpet. The advantage to buying the the top of the line kit is it usually comes with most everything you need to make the car drive good. Good luck on your selection and don't be afraid to ask questions.

One other option would be to purchase a ready to run car. Someone like Jason Sloniker that's started out with one but has upgraded since, might have a used one for sale. The problem with the pan car is that very few race them outdoors, you would probably still need to get a touring car for that and switch your electronics in the summer over to that car. In addition to my Losi kit I did purchase sway bars and plaid front and purple rear foams along with using heavier shock oil. You are welcome to drive my car and or discuss aspects of these cars sometime with either Phil or myself.

Something I wouldn't spend to much on is electronics. A low end FM radio (Airtronics has a good one), some sport stick pack batteries, and a $50.00 racing speed control from Duratrax or similer company will probably work for what you want. On a battery charger I would go ahead and bite the bullit and get a higher end charger since the cheaper ones never seem to hold up. It's important though to give any of them a few minutes to cool down before charging again.

Hello, For charger how about the Duratrax Digital Pulse charger thats in my budget . For Batteries I agree and thought stick would be good to start but what 3000HV packs or 2400 dont know.,For

I have been many discussions about which car is the best. I purchased a used TC3, add a few things and thought about dumping a ton of money adding the entire list of trick hop-ups looking for speed. I then was convinced by Brad, Phil, Jeremy and many others that the driver with consistent lap times and the best run lines spells FAST. Well I listened, and turn lap after lap in practice and concentrated on set up. I'm not the best driver by any means, but this last weekend we were turning 52-53 laps on the oval. I never thought that my car was capable of these speeds. If you want to go fast you need to buy the car that you like. All of the RTR's have week points. Find out what people buy as replacement parts. Remember that if you do purchase a RTR then you will most likely add graphite parts some hop-ups and spend more than you would have if you purchased the kit. I am now a firm believer that the driver makes a fast car. Hope this helps! See ya at the track

I'm not familiar with that charger so I can't say, but I've seen Rob Dornseif start racing with us and become fast in a short amount of time. He would be a good one to listen to on this subject or other recomendations he might have. It still is going to boil down to you and what it's going to take for you to enjoy rc racing.

In my short time at the track I have found that the Sanyo 3000 NiMh battery’s would be a good choice. I run a Team Orion Racer pack it's not the best, but it's not the most expensive either. Chargers.... I use the Reedy Quasar Pro and it works great and runs on 110v or 12v. The question is how serious do you want to get? Novak makes a great charger Millennium Pro with a Black Box power supply included for either of these chargers you will spend $170-$190 just guessing. Check the local hobby stores some of them have either or both in stock.

Im Thinking about buying this package deal for $250 www.geocities.com/bionictony/pro3.html then a better charger like the Quasar Pro with money left over for tires /springs etc. I think this car would be good for the novice class , what do you all think,, ALso my brother came into town today and gave me a Trinity Street Spec NIB that he bought several years ago ,can I do anything with this or should give it back to him,, Later Ed

Seems like a lot for the money. Some things you might not like; the magnum sport radio has very little in the way of adjustments, you're correct on the charger, the car itself isn't raced by anyone else around here so you'll be on you're own somewhat as far as set-up and parts. I've seen on RC Car Action website that HPI is coming out with a Pro 4 soon. I had a Pro 2 but stayed away from the Pro 3 because all of the negative comments about the car so I can't personally say much about the car. It looks to me like he spent a lot of money to improve the car though. I would Question the speed control as far as racing applications go.

I'm not an oval guru, but I can give you a little info. With the street spec chassis, you can run in the 6-cell stock NASCAR class. You need a NASCAR body though. At our big trophy race we had a 6-cell NASTRUCK class that used truck bodies, but I don't know if enough people show up for that class for weekly racing. There is also a Busch Grand National class that I believe uses spec motors and spec batteries. Hopefully someone that races oval regularly at Summit Raceway will correct any errors I have made here.

Phil and the others I have a suggestion for the oval racing. I keep forgetting to bring it up so while it is on my mind I will say it now. I think that all the qualifying should be done just like the start of the mains. That each car starts the heats from the same grid as for the mains. This means that the quaulifiers are just like mains and the track record could be from the mains if so choosen to do so. Also the way it is currently done it is like a land rush with everyone in a straight line and makes for a bad starting situation. Also if there are more then 2 rows of cars then the back cars are starting in the marbles from the turn. Just some suggestions.

Krisfo
03-11-2003, 12:29 AM
Sounds like an awesome idea to me...but why not an ifmar start........that way everyone races da clock and not each other.......avoids a crashfest thru the race...and the usual big pile up in da first turn.......

everyone gets there laps, and if two drivers tangle...then they both are at fault....cuz the were racin each other....and not thinking about just gettin as many laps as possible.....
