View Full Version : Summit Raceway - Fort Wayne, IN sheath 05-05-2004, 12:02 PM Will track down a camera and get some shots to post as soon as we can. Mark Recio 05-05-2004, 12:48 PM Any news on that once a month saturday carpet oval race that was discussed? wallyworld 05-12-2004, 04:36 AM I know this doesn't work for most guys from out of town but it is to difficult to race both outdoors and indoors on saturday so we decided to race indoor oval on the second and fourth fridays of each month until regular season starts the first of october.. sheath 05-12-2004, 11:22 AM I'm still trying to track down that camera to get some shots of the dirt oval. It's a good sized oval... about a 250 foot driveline. Racing every Saturday. Open at 9AM, racing at Noon. sheath 05-13-2004, 01:00 PM The weather is looking great for Saturday! Remember, indoor carpet oval this Friday night, outdoor dirt oval and offroad Saturday at Noon. sheath 05-15-2004, 07:48 AM Weather is looking great for racing. A little on the cool side, but NO RAIN in the forecast for today. The track should remain in prime condition all day long. centari5000 05-16-2004, 09:26 PM I gotta post this just for my own two cents worth. from what I understand some of the oval guys had intrest in a dirt oval in fort wayne. So, the oval is in, half of last years offroad guys are p.o. because the offroad track got changed and scaled down. So, my question is. where are all the oval guys at? its three weeks into the season and we have had a total of 3 guys race. the one weekend there were enough people to run and nobody did. I may be starting some stink here but the way I look at it is this the oval was put in because it was asked for. It was looked on as a way to bring in some new racers and change things up a bit. all I see it doing is costing the fort wayne facility money. they have lost almost half of their offroad guys and gained nothing from the oval guys who wanted the dang thing. so come on guys you wanted it come race it. otherwise go tell the owners you were wrong and you really dont want it. so there that is my rant I am sure some people will not like it and to be honest I dont really care. the fort cant survive on 13 racers a weekend and carpet aint gonna keep it afloat alone either so come guys whats it gonna be scorgon 05-16-2004, 10:52 PM Well said Centari hope someone besides me is listening...I think some of those racers that asked for dirt oval are now asking for carpet oval races during the summer... Monti007 05-16-2004, 11:27 PM I for one never asked for a dirt oval nor did I ever want one in fact I have never had a dirt oval car. When asked by Phil if I would race at the dirt oval I told him "no" I would not be running. As for wanting to run on carpet I would like to but I understand how people want to be out side in the summer and that is fine by me. As for getting racers you might want to bang the drum on Dirt Oval.com you might get some interest over there. I hope that you can now take my name off of your dart board and start in on some one else. -Monti- wallyworld 05-17-2004, 02:02 AM This is a misunderstanding. No carpet oval racers as far as I know asked Phil or I to put a dirt oval in. This decision was made by Phil and I then later we did a survey to see who was interested. centari5000 05-17-2004, 11:00 AM nobody is puttin you on a dartboard to my knowledge monti. I was not pointing a finger at one person I was puttin it up for everyone to read. maybe puttin up here was not a (lets say) correct thing to do but i will not appolgize for it. obviously there are people who was at one time interested in running dirt and this was a way to get to them. if those people are not reading the offroad thread then they may not no what all is up so if they see it here then now they know. I am sure phil and dale prolly dont like what I said and how it was presented but hey it needed to be said. wether it was at the track or here it was said and now we all know the dirt oval is up and running so come out and play blueracer55 05-17-2004, 11:09 AM i would love to come out, and play. but right now the way gas prices are it really doesn't make sense to drive that far. hopefully the prices will drop, and we'll come up there. i think ur track will eventually take off. just have some time, and patiance. with a new track, and people having to buy new cars it's kind of pricey. i to come out soon. paul huntington  Mark Recio 05-17-2004, 11:25 AM Centari5k, Not too sure who you are, but I truly hope you aren't aiming any of your post at those of us who drove over 100 miles each way 2, 3 and even 4 times a month this winter to support the track. If past events didn't leave a sour taste in ppl's mouths, this might just do the trick. Did I say I'd like to race on the dirt, yes, I did. Did I demand that it be put in, no. I'd love to get up there and run on a large track, however, with the joys of homeownership, and the responsibilities therein, getting away gets more and more difficult. Mark bluelineracer 05-17-2004, 12:01 PM centauri...aka harry.... i see that you have a distinct interest in off road...dating all the way back to july of last year....although there were some "sorry i can't make it this weekend" posts that indicate your attendance was sporadic. if you have a particular bias against oval racing, please let it be known(sarcasm). what do we "oval" racers have to say about lackluster turnouts in the on-road program at the fort? nothing. the business owners do what they think will be in their best interests....racers do the same. don't question the support of the indy travelling crew. we logged alot of miles to the fort this winter and didn't see all that many locals in the heat postings. it might be worth mentioning that phil has always had a soft spot for the dirt oval scene as can be witnessed by his custom works cars on display throughout the shop. also worth mentioning, that some guys who raced at the fort got so heavy into the d.o. scene that they went ahead and built there own track locally. common sense tells us that the d.o. scene is fragmented enough to fully support one track let alone another within 150 miles. i indeed filled out a questionaire as to my summer interests. i also spoke with phil about a once a month carpet oval program at that time. i didn't get bent out of shape when they decided to do it fridays rather than saturdays which takes all chances out for us in indianapolis. i took it that this worked better for the folks that run the track(s). the commonalities between a carpet oval car and a dirt oval car are as broad as those between a sedan and an off-road buggy. it's hard to say that because a guy likes to run his toy car in circles on the carpet that they'll enjoy doing the same out in the elements as well. i understand you might be frustrated that your off-road hang out has been tainted. but please, don't talk to the die-hard oval guys from indy about the loss of local tracks...we get pretty fired up. i wish the best of luck to the fort wayne crew and hope that we can race with them again soon. dusty kemp blueracer55 05-17-2004, 01:03 PM well put dusty. i couldn't agree more with u, and mark. i just got into d.o., and i love it. there are few similarities between the cars. evreyone knows i have a mouth, and i say what i feel. there is no reason to put oval guys down. some of us had interest. we guaranteed nothing about coming up there. i drive a long distance to ur track spending 100-200 dollars on a weekend easy. please don't take it out on guys that travel, and spend money that far away. marketing is key. if u don't have a local following it hurts. if we could make it every weekend we would. we all have priorities, and bills. most of u know i did build a track. i didn't do this to be in competition with other tracks. i done this because people in this area i live in wanted it. i am not making any money off it either. in matter of fact i'm in a hole. this is a hobby where u can't expect to make money. if u do ur broke. this is my two pennies. hope you guys get a better turn out. paul huntington Hustler 05-17-2004, 05:09 PM Dusty, Mark, Paul and the rest of the out of town shoes, I am a local on roader. I have come to some oval nights and have seen your support of Summit and would like to say thanks. I don't speak for Dale and Phil but I am sure they appreciate you guys too. It is one thing to come to a track and support it. It is another to run well and attract more fast guys like you do. At times I have been embarrassed to see the lack of local support this track has had to endure. Fort Wayne has been without a track for a long time and I hope Summit has the determination to survive until everyone comes out of hiding. Anyway I thought this thread was for the carpet oval, not the dirt? It shows a lot of love for a hobby to drive 200+ miles to run toy cars when others won't drive across town to do so. -Sean redbaron 05-17-2004, 10:34 PM Hey Harry, I think no matter how many times you say " I'm not pointing fingers, just trying to get the guys that asked for the d.o. to come out and play" won't work these guys just want to get all up-tight. If you didn't ask for it don't get all fired up, unless your feeling guilty...ha! Hustler 05-17-2004, 11:46 PM Do you need a tissue? redbaron 05-17-2004, 11:56 PM No... But it sounds like you do! Hustler 05-18-2004, 10:23 AM This is the third thread you've been crying on, I just figured you were running low... redbaron 05-18-2004, 10:50 AM Wow! I must be your Hero.....You stalking me or what? Looks like your the only one crying. Mark Recio 05-18-2004, 11:10 AM John, While we all appreciate the good chuckle your youth fueled angst has given us (Especially because you seem so unaware of it's humorous, yet sad, nature), your routine is getting a bit boring. If you have something constructive to say, please do so in a manner reflective of your 2002 honors diploma from DeKalb High School. Otherwise, please refrain from making childish posts here as we don't need to loose any more racers then perhaps we already have. Thanks, The entire community. redbaron 05-18-2004, 11:33 AM THAT is funny! How about class of 1983. Good job Internet detective. I jumped on here when you guys started climbing on Harry. he was just asking for the D.O. racers to come and play. It's all good.....SEE YA! sheath 05-18-2004, 02:19 PM Ok, let's get back to the basics... Saturdays - track opens at 9:00 AM, racing at Noon 3 heats, 1 main Offroad classes... 2WD Stock 2WD Mod Truck Stock Truck Mod 4WD Mod Oval classes ... 2WD Stock 2WD Mod Truck Stock Truck Mod 4WD - touring chassis, buggy chassis 4WD - Oval specific chassis (Dominator, etc.) Sprint Cars $12 first class $6 each additional classes All B.S. aside, come on out and race! centari5000 05-18-2004, 07:17 PM thank you jon I agree with sheath lets go out a play. otto_3478s 05-18-2004, 07:34 PM you GUy s Are ver y funnie blueracer55 05-18-2004, 08:43 PM sheath, are u guys running a edm class? it seems to be really popular down here. paul otto_3478s 05-18-2004, 08:57 PM What is EDM, Paul, I have never heard of it???? blueracer55 05-18-2004, 09:03 PM it's an east coast modified. it kind of looks like a jsper modified on steroids.lol look on www.dirtoval.com in the readers rides section. paul Krisfo 05-18-2004, 09:49 PM Hey Guys.... It seems as there is some real problems here with somethings.....you all know who this is, and well I really don't care..... The reason for the low local support at the carpet track.....is the really fast guys......turned the local average jo from racing.......example.....John Cummings.....he was in a heat with a real good racer, got in his way and the fast guy said a bunch of crap to him while coming off the driver stand......and then the next race he was with the same guy and got his car busted up...because the fast guy go P.O'd at him.......he's never been back then you have people coming up to the management team with suggestions and comments to make things better.....race directors changed and things get changed slowly, and gradually......people find a race director they like....does a good job......a real nice guy......then he gets pushed out.....never to be heard from again........ I noticed as soon as I left the facility alot of other people went with me.......I can easily count at least 15 + ........maybe half of the racers from Lagrange too....... Sad for Fort Wayne, sad for the sport.........then you wonder why this doesn't work??? Maybe I have stuck my foot in my mouth again and opened a big can of worms......SO WHAT.......I can handle any criticism, any comments and whatever..........Here is my email address............ bring it on........ kgfmotorsports@mchsi.com Krisfo 05-18-2004, 09:51 PM However the guys like Sonny B., Mark Recio, and those types helped the locals get better........... Maybe next year the track could create sportsman classes for 4 cell stock and 4 cell 19t............to keep the crap from happeneing and bring the local dude out of retirement..... blueracer55 05-18-2004, 10:16 PM i don't think anyone left the oval for being mad or what not. i don't think people are following anyone. it's summer, people have things to do, and some like running outside. also the ft. has decreased run time on the carpet. the carpet track will be fine as soon as the weather gets cold. carpet always slows in the winter. it's a season thing. paul sheath 05-19-2004, 12:20 AM Paul, We're kind of rookies to the current dirt oval scene. Last time there was a dirt oval in town, everything was latemodel bodies. 2WD and 4WD. From checking out other sites, and seeing what you guys are doing in Advance, it seems that the norm is now to run EDM bodies on the 2WD cars and latemodel bodies on the 4WD cars. I'd like to see things go that way when the oval here takes off. Several guys have taken their TC3's and put the rally conversion on them, but none have made it out to race yet. I think because it was a rally kit, they all bought rally bodies. It's not a bad thing, but eventually it would be great to see a fleet of these 4WD's with the McAllister or Factory Works wedge bodies. I took a look at your classes on your website. Do you differentiate between stock and mod in any of your classes, or simply EDM 2WD, latemodel 4WD, truck and sprints? Where do you get your EDM bodies? I seem to have a hundred questions. I'll have to drop you an email. Good luck with the track. DWBryan 05-19-2004, 12:50 AM Seasonal racing is a issue, I know that for fact... in the winter no one runs the concrete heheh LOL. But on the serious side, in the winter the baots get stored along with the bikes and golf equip so Rc cars come out of the closet. Im no longer running a carpet track in the winter so I know Im racing at Summit and get to mix it up just like 1 of the boys! ;) I just have to see what 1 to grab. Well just checkin the news and offering some... pit row here is now concrete also.. or will be this weekend. sheath 05-19-2004, 01:29 AM Pics of the track now up on the website. http://home.comcast.net/~scottaheath/images/ovalturn1.jpg smokefan 05-19-2004, 04:01 AM sheath Not sure if we are even gonna have any 4wheel latemodels the way it looks it's gonna be 2 wheel edm's and 2 wheel latemodel, plus sprints and trucks. As far as stock and mods we kinda have been leaving it up to the guys when they get here if they wanna run mod they do or if the majority wanna run stock we do. We'll try to load up the short bus and a bunch of us will make a road trip. Jerry Barton Advance Speedway blueracer55 05-19-2004, 08:37 AM edm bodies; diangelo, custom works, mcallister, and some others. there are some great links on d.o. .com. i think jerry is running a deangelo. corns is running a custom fabbed body. feeser is on the cw kick. i think jtrain is mcallister. there are alot of new guys starting up soon. seems alot of people love the buggy edm setup. doesn't take alot of money, and they look great. we're no veterans either. i never even raced dirt oval. jerry did ounce. we built it because it looked like fun. trust me, we are learning every day. lol paul smokefan 05-19-2004, 12:14 PM I am def. no expert Paul can tell you that. We did this for the fun factor not the money factor. As long as everyone is having fun that is all that matters. They after all are toy cars. Like I said sometime soon( gas prices drop a little) maybe we can make a road trip we'll come up and have some fun with you guys. otto_3478s 05-22-2004, 12:13 AM Hi!!! Jason L 05-24-2004, 05:14 PM hey there otto 3478s, or Austin  sheath 05-25-2004, 10:56 AM As most of you know, earlier this spring, the outdoor offroad track at Summit R/C Raceway was reworked to create a combination Dirt Oval and Offroad track. Several jumps were built in the infield of the oval for the offroad portion of the combination track. A good portion of the oval was also utilized as straightaways for the offroad course. It has been decided at this time to return the outdoor dirt track to an offroad only layout. With the space restrictions of a combination track, the offroad course could not be configured in such a way as to provide an offroad track of the type that the racers wanted. Racing this Saturday will be held as scheduled on the current track layout, for both offroad and dirt oval racing. Track is open at 9 AM, and racing starts at Noon. On the race calendar posted at the track and the website, there was a Memorial Day Dirt Oval race scheduled for this Sunday, May 30. This race has been canceled. Stay home this Sunday, watch the Indy 500, and see the 1-2 finish by Scott Sharp and Sarah Fisher. (that's not the track's prediction, simply a personal opinion :)) At this time there is no set timetable for the changeover of the track, but work could begin as soon as this weekend, after the racing. The track will attempt to keep you informed as best they can on the website, and through these Hobbytalk boards. mckeller 05-29-2004, 05:51 AM Hey guys.
