Suggestion on when to have points nights at HW.
Here it is. The night before Carpet Action I vote that we don't have points at HW.
Anyone else agree? Show of hands please.

Could be a good idea, seeing that most of the "Friday Night Gang" was practicing for carpet last Friday night. Would also give people that didn't go to the 1st carpet race a chance to set up & practice their carpet cars on Friday. At the same point,if you get to the carpet at 8AM,you'll have approx 6 hrs till the race starts to do just that!

I would vote in favor of that.................
Getting out after midnight is kinda late, and to make it back at 0800 could be rough. Specially for an old man.....

Just an FYI, at this point we are not planning on Friday night practices. Last Friday was a one time thing. The key word is planning. There are a lot of things that go on at that facility, so it's hard to tie up the schedule. Also, we may look into starting the races earlier, I didn't get in bed until 2:00 AM Sunday. So you may not have quite as much practice time. We are still trying to work out all the wrinkles

joespec 06-01-2003, 05:18 AM I can appreciate everyone's views on HW,.....a short bit of history,.....back in the day, there was parking lot racing,....and that's all! It became increasingly hard to get racers out of their trailers to come out and set-up,much less even do their duties, such as turn marshaling. The HW track,as rough as it is,helped alot,at least to the extent that there was no set-up to do,for the handful of people who would still do it. There are two ways to look at the track scene,one......improvement! Two,....the one's who consistantly complain are somewhat spoiled. HW is what it is,and I enjoy racing there! Of course those who have raced in better circumstances would not want to go back to less, but we had alot of guys having a good time last friday night, and with guys like Malin and Owen setting the pace for the fastest class there, doesn't seem to be too bumpy after all. We have had a few new people move to Jax.and perhaps they came from places where there were no tracks close by,or,they were doing the club scene, and had to set-up,tear down and stuff. They are probably loving the "show up and race" deal,no matter which track they go to. Some might not go to HW,.....their loss. To those who do,.....Thank you! There are many who enjoy racing with you! Congrats to Katie!!
bigdon18 06-02-2003, 11:48 PM Does anyone know if the personal transponders work at hobby world ,, thinking about getting one but dont want to get one if you only can use it at a few tracks and not alot of them.
thanks
Don
BullFrog 06-03-2003, 06:59 AM The answer is no. It has to be an AMBrc system (they have the red transponder- digatal). The older systems have the black. The system at Hobbyworld uses the black (analog system). The carpet track and tuffys both use the AMBrc system.
joespec 06-04-2003, 09:19 PM To any of the HW racers, who might have an oval car,but perhaps do not have the funds to go out and jump into 4-cell mod racing,.....there is an alternative out there being bandied about.........a "pro-spec" class, utilizing a quality oval car,but using spec batteries and motors. If you would be interested in close, exciting oval racing, but without the sometimes costly pursuit of voltage and horsepower, give us your imput at the race next friday night!
shawnleary 06-05-2003, 05:39 PM Street Spec needs updating. I hope it will bring more people out on Friday nights. 18 bucks for a motor, 17 bucks for a new 6-cell battery, and 20 bucks for a set of tires. Gotta love it. 55 bucks and drive in a new class. Any Chassis, No price limit on speedo and radio, Wing allowed. Can't wait!! 30 laps should be easy, probably 31. Not a bad idea, glad I thought of all of this.... Not.
Joe H., thinking about re-joining the ranks of Spec? : )

Don
maybe it was 1 to many wiggy's?
I got my FIX anyway. 4w drive micro..... IT's STILL RACING PEOPLE!!
joespec 06-07-2003, 05:22 AM Yeah Shawn,I would  That's the great thing about having a better car,I can go from class to class with minimum change. The good thing about a spec chassis is that it's cheap to fix,and somewhat durable, but the bad thing is that at faster speeds,it won't react to keep up.Spec chassis would be good if we had a short-track there,we could rub fenders all night long, and wouldn't have to sweat the "Big One",but on the speedway, one mishap, and one can have the breakage that Rob had on his first night of spec racing..........
irvan36mm 06-07-2003, 02:02 PM Jay-
Believe it or not, your "no-rain" dance worked! It seemed like it rained everywhere but HW! It actually stayed dry until I left at around 9:00-I'm sure it was dry even after 9! The really bad part about it was that there was only 8 people that showed up. At least 1 or 2 from each class! Let's hope that it was the threat of rain kept people at home. Where else could you race at on Friday nights around Jax?????
Let's see a HUGE turnout next Friday!!!!!!!!
-George
metrodog 06-07-2003, 02:06 PM The threat of rain and work has kept me away. But " I shall return".
When will the pro spec be in affect ? Next series I hope.

joespec 06-07-2003, 09:07 PM From what has been talked about, I percieve spec motors, spec batteries, any chassis,Nascar body,wings,......what about tires? spec? I would think that spec tires would further the cost effective attitude, and simplify the tuning proceedure,.....but what does everyone think? What about gears? open?

if you guys are going to have a "pro spec" class I wouldn't get caught up in the cost effectivness too much.leave the gears and tires open, besides once you find what tire combinaton works best most everybody will run the same combination,at least that's how it worked out here. It's going to come down to tuning no matter what limitations you have.Just some food for thought.
shawnleary 06-09-2003, 06:47 PM I vote we keep Spec tires. A lot of four cell mod guys run spec tires, so I say we stay with them. Let's keep it "Spec" except for the chassis, tires included.

katf1sh 06-09-2003, 08:44 PM spec has gone off the deepend? any chassis (just like the big boyz) any tire (just like the big boyz) only thing left is 28.00 cheapo batteries and you guys run a 21 turn mod motor? any wing (just like the big boyz) and spur and pinion? so spec class has boiled down to this:
1 full blown oval car adx, ksg, maverick chassis. 350.00
1 full blown lrp speedo 170.00
reciever 50.00
radio 200.00
motor 25.00
battery pack 28.00
exotic compound tires 20 x 2 40.00
thunder wing 8.00
monte body 18.00
i figure a race matched pack is 32.00 4 cell
and a 19 turn motor is 35.00 i can re sell the "matched" racer pack for 20.00 on ebay you guys have saved about 15.00 to run "spec" class?????? guys take your high dollar oval cars remove the damn stick pack homemade things and just run 4 cell stock..what is the problem here? here is another brain storm..boylan runs a break out class you pick the motor and the amount of laps sometmes the fastest guy doesn't win..your taking a quality oval car trying to put a pack in it not designed for it..trying to put as much horse power as you can in it..and trying to skate by calling it a spec class? c'mon fellas rich, boylan, billy, tony all of us run 4 cell stock on the smaller tracks..if you have a problem with running with phil and joe have a sportsman 19 turn class..when you go 28 or 29 laps you get moved up to pro 19 turn? dont butcher up a good car for those cheap spec packs.. :freak:

I've always said spec doesn't equate to cheaper racing it just equate's to spec racing. The only thing your really accomplishing is keeping the sponsored guys out.
metrodog 06-10-2003, 12:29 PM It is a financial stepping stone between spec and 4-cell 19t though. 4-cell racing is so much about batteries these days.
greg
shawnleary 06-10-2003, 03:26 PM I think Spec is cheaper than anything else out there. The Spec junk is also a limiting factors that makes the racing a lot closer. The more people go the same speed, the better the racing action! I'm going to run 4-cell stock on the carpet in a couple weeks. Got an L3 that I will use to take on the big dogs from Daytona : ) I'm not ready to go as fast at the 19-turn guys are. I am in no rush to go much faster than Spec and 4-cell Stock.
L3 chassis $50.
Radio, Speed Control $89 bucks Futaba.
P2K2 Pro $35 dollars.
12 3300 cells $60 bucks.
4-cell stock sounds good to me. $234 bucks total. I think people spend more than that on just their radio's. Hmmmm. I dunno. I have money left over for my other hobbies, ie spanking it, etc. Carpet is coming.. Can't wait.
Shawn
katf1sh 06-10-2003, 05:15 PM pepe i agree with what you said except for the sponsored guys part..what keeps them out of that class? if they played with you guys would racing not be close any more? or do you wthink they are above running a "spec" class? i would think you would get a few ringers in there ? i still believe 4 cell stock with a break out is the place to start. when you can tune your car and drive it between the pipes for a few months you will be able to break out a couple times..by than you should be ready for almost anything? using 6 cells and a 21 turn motor is not going to help you set up and tune a car made for single cells. it may frustrate you and may leave a bitter taste in your mouth but it realy wont help you set up your car and hone those driving skills. i'm done ranting for now, lol.
cneyedog 06-10-2003, 05:36 PM Guys, myself, katfish, tony padilla, billy bruce, troy schafer, ed shaffer when we all go over and race the guys from the west coast race at Franks hobbies in Oldsmar near tampa.... we ALL race 4 cell stock. We run the Outlaw Money class (thats what Mike Boylan calls it) Along with us Mike Boylan, TinMan, Chris Lawson, Rich Baran and other guys from over there all race it.......its alot of fun on a small track like Franks. Mike sets up a break out class for the guys who dont want to pony up the $$$ for kickass batteries, or arent experienced enough or whatever the case maybe, they all run 4 cell stock as well..... the beauty part is when/if they get good enough to move up they are more than welcome to if they dont want to....thats cool too. If 4 cell stock is too slow for the size of hobbyworld......then I suggest this.....you all agree on a 19T motor to run....for instance the C2 (using stock springs and brushes if you want), run regular 4 cell battery packs (not spec packs) agree on a fixed gear ratio of say 35-104 .....tires cant be smaller than 2.15 in diameter (so no one plays around with rollout) and go race. Also, you could then use those batteries elsewhere if you went racing. Spec tires arent neccessary either. if you run three pinks and a purple right front....your pretty much set.... make that part of your rules too....any tire manufacturer.....but you have to run the same compound tires....the racing will be just as close.....wont cost anymore..... you'll learn how to tune your car (unlike a spec car) and you'll be able to race other places with the equipment you already have....this should be the biggest reason.....you guys have it good in jax with quality places to race.
katf1sh 06-10-2003, 06:40 PM there are other places to race in florida? duh!
Fl Flash 06-10-2003, 10:26 PM Dang Shawn, where did you find 12 3300s for 60 bucks? if i could do that I would run stock! wouldnt have a line on a good nimh charger would ya? the smoke all came out of my Reedy Qausar Pro last night
Later Lee

the sponsered guys thing is what I was told as to why no one wanted to run a 4 cell 19T class, some of the guys that come run spec with us are sponsered and they usually dominate because of superior set up and driving skills. The spec class thing here really didn't make sense to me either, but that was what I was told as to why no one would run 4 cell 19T here,go figure.
irvan36mm 06-11-2003, 08:32 AM Jacksonville's always has a strong Spec following! As I said before,I can remember nights where there were 2 heats of Spec (18-20 cars!) every Friday night! Granted the following has declined in the last few years, either people have hung up their cars or have moved on to other classes (19-turn oval, touring, etc). We've always have a great time with the Spec cars with close racing, but everyone feels it's time to step up the program a notch or two without going into a class that they're not ready to handle yet. By introducing the concept of open chassis in our Spec program (as is done in other parts of the country),one can be even more competitive in an oval class, learn chassis tuning basics and still run their existing stockpiles of Spec motors & batts! After they decide they had enough of Spec, then they can move up to an advanced class with the tuning knowledge they've gained in Spec.
Look at it this way-if someone new to R/C were to come to HW and wants to run oval, would you put them into 19-turn? Disastrous! We've tried 4-cell stock on this track before, but with the track driveline (355'-ish) you can watch paint dry and scratch yourself before you have to negotiate the next turn! We may try that again sometime but the "kids" (j/k!) around here want to go fast! The Spec class would be the alternative around here (Jax) for a newbie to learn! Also look at it as something like the "ABC" (Arca,Busch,Craftsman truck) program that a NASCAR team sometimes does for new driver development!
OK,I'm done ranting (or blowing smoke-take your pick! ) Kat,thanks for your insight! I'll see you & the rest of Daytona at the next carpet race!

shawnleary 06-11-2003, 02:53 PM Right on George.
I can't say that Spec is a good starter for people, except for costs. But the speeds won't be too far off of the 4cell 19t guys. It took me a couple of months going to the track twice a week to be able to go around the track a few times consistantly, without crashing into the pipes. This is a hobby that can't be rushed. Only time and practice made me improve. I know a lot of people that spend the dough, and then don't show up enough to get "good". I hate to see a car sitting on a shelf somewhere! Dust'em off and get out on Friday nights.
Greg, I was hoping to keep it R-brushes or Spec brushes. Keep it more "Specish". At least for the first point series then we can change it to any. I think right now the rule is already any springs.
Then next point series we will move up to 6-cell 3300 with the spec motor, just kidding. : ) Has anyone run 6-cell 19t at Hobby World? I wonder how many laps one could turn with 6-cells.

that is what i'm talking about..you cannot have a beginner run your so called spec class it's to damn fast! i would make a bet that if we came up and ran 4 cell stock we would have a blast! besides the cars would catch less air! lol got rug?

shawnleary 06-11-2003, 06:00 PM Mmmmmmm rug...... :)
Katfish, I'm going to give it a try and run with you on the carpet next week. I bought an L3 and already had a P2K2 Pro that I bought at CPT last year thinking Spec was forever banished. My speed control is fairly weak, but funds will hopefully be alloted soon for a beefier speedo.
Were you running with a wing on the carpet?
What gearing would you recommend for a P2K2 Pro? I know you said 105, 29 for your motors. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Follow up to "Got Carpet?" t-shirt. On the front, "Got Carpet?" and on the back, "Mmmmmm... Rug : )" Gotta have the smilie face too.

katf1sh 06-12-2003, 05:09 PM i may have my new maverick shirt on! he he he they have a web site ya know? errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I got this spec car here.... but the way you guys keep going and changing the rules, a stock spec will be useless as a class it seems.
You open the rules to any chassis.... yet still run spec motor and batteries? Im not a hard core oval freek...but i do think the L chassis are set up for custom packs.. not a stick.
You keep morphing something into somehing else that already has a class for it.. its called a stock 4 cell.
Im not trying to start something.... just trying to figure out which type of vehicle your going to end up with. I just dont want to try and get a handle on something when NEXT popint series the rules and the car i HAVE now is out-dated.
I may be confused as hell.. but i still can turn left.... AND RIGHT!! buwaahehehehehehe
katf1sh 06-12-2003, 06:47 PM oval is one time when right is wrong! got rug?

good luck....they only come in XL .....
shawnleary 06-12-2003, 08:00 PM People have been urging me and jason to open it up to any chassis for the past year. one year ago I bought this spec car to run at HW. Doooh, no one went to HW anymore, so I thought, CPT was the rage. Spec has never returned to an 8+ driver a week class. I guess I want to have the best of both worlds, speed and cheapness. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel, but NO ONE is showing up at HW for Spec. I'm pretty happy driving just the Spec chassis, but no one else seems to want to. Sorry if the changes are confusing but it seems we have no other choice. I hope keeping the spec batteries, motors and tires would be a stabilizing force for a cheap, stockish class. I spend 37 dollars for two packs that I run for the entire point series. I ran the same three packs for the last two point series. I don't want to spend three times that EVERY point series, to go one half second faster a lap. I'm hoping that Spec will stay a low cost alternative. Not all of us own a Hobby Shop, just kidding dude. I love ya man. Dust off that Spec car and join us this series. We still have 5 races left!!! Possibly the last CLASSIC street spec series at HW. :)
Shawn
I learned a long time ago that the two words speed and cheap don't go together, sorry.Speed cost money how fast do you want to go.
irvan36mm 06-12-2003, 09:56 PM Shawn-
I'll be bringing out 3 cars tomorrow (weather permitting). Stock Nastruck, original ill-handling Spec, and the prototype "open-chassis" Spec. I'll also bring out the 4-cell batt tray so I could switch over the "open Spec" car to 4-cell stock. I think that this would be the best way to see the differences between the different views in classes posted here. 4-cell stock could also work at HW,as long as its geared correctly & you don't hit anything! Malin & I tried it once at HW. At that time, with the gearing in my car,it was waaay slower than Joe. But it was fun trying to catch up to Joe & attempting to draft off of him! I would like to to some practice laps w/ you,Greg & Jason with the different cars (Open-Spec,4-cell stock). The results could settle any doubts!?!
