Went down to a 15T spur.

15t spur or pinion...LOL, thats kinda small for a spur

What's your trans final drive ratio and tire diamater? I can help you figure it out if you'd like!

Gonna hold you to that, Tip. Actually I can work it out but may need a nudge. Have to look up the gear ratio from man. cuz I don't have a clue.

gearing the Ve8 correctly

With the Ve8 having a larger than average spur gear at 50t and a Internal Ratio (IR) of 4.3:1 it takes a much larger pinion than what is typically used on the majority of 1:8 scale buggies, in order to achieve the optimum Final Drive Ratio (FDR).

(spur/pinion) x IR = FDR - this is a true and accurate representation of gear ratio

Therefore a 16t pinion will give you a 13.44 FDR which is way too low for a 1:8 scale off-road buggy IMO, and it is a very common mistake with the Ve8. I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone post that their temps were 170, 180, etc. with a 17t or 18t pinion on a Ve8, and inevitably receive a reply advising them to "gear down thats why its too hot". That is just bad advice.

I have run these ESC/Motor combinations:
MMM w/ 1700kv, 1800kv, 1900kv, 2050kv, 2100kv, 2200kv
MMP w/ 1700kv, 1800kv, 1900kv, 2050kv
RX8 w/ 1400kv, 1700kv, 1900kv, 2050kv, 2100kv, 2200kv
Xcelorin w/ 1700kv, 2100kv, 2200kv

In these 1:8 scale buggies:
Losi 8ight E
HoBao Hyper 9e
HotBodies Ve8

All of the above have been run indoor and outdoor from 5 min qualifiers to 20 min mains with Final Drive Ratio's between 9.5 and 11.5 and have an average temperature range from 105 degrees to 150 degrees for both the motor and ESC. The exception being the MMP, which I have the fan and its shroud removed, it occasionally will temp over 150 degrees.

I typically run a 20t(10.75 FDR) or 21t(10.23 FDR) pinion on my Ve8, and Josh Alton (the designer of the Ve8) typically runs a 23t(9.34 FDR) or 22t(9.77 FDR) pinion on his. I have found that a FDR of 10.xx is a good benchmark to start from for most tracks and I may go with a low 11.xx FDR for a smaller indoor track. Most pro drivers seem to end up in the 9.xx range for their FDR's.

You will have to count me out if we start at 3 p.m. and don't get done till 10.
No way I can bring Dale down and not get home till midnight. I did like racing on Saturday and having a day to recover but starting at the normal 11 a.m. would be best for me personally.

A wealth of info needed for fdr calc. Since I admittedly bought the wrong motor, I'm trying to compensate w/ smaller pin. for now. I do have a 2200 motor coming. 1700 & 1900 motors are hard to come by on hobby talk. BTW, I'm moving on June 17, 18, & 19, so rc'ing on or around those dates are out.

I have the same vote, as cool as night races sound and having Sunday off, getting the kids home that late would not work well.

What about some Saturday events ? Trophy races etc.

Hope to see you then,

Ouch, that hurts! In the E-Revos defense, what else could it be classified as? Its by no means a "Truggy", and yes I agree, it's a bit more than just a "monster truck" like for example say, a savage flux, but if our governing body "ROAR" deams it a "monster truck" well then, who am I to question their decision?! Not a monster truck! A cross breed! A savage or max is a true monster truck!!!

the revo was intended to compete with the losi muggy. ive never seen a muggy class...LOL. but that is was it was intended for. it was a good seller so they had to list it as a monster truck for sales.(but was built for muggy). the true monster trucks are measured by chassis height and trasmission placement, and also monster truck tires, (not truggy tires) does the E revo have a center transmission? i know the nitros do. unsure about the modded E-REVOS?

Mike D.
06-03-2011, 06:34 PM

Well then I'll let you take a look at it, it has a center transmission, and indeed it does have monster truck tires on it! The Traxxas response pros and they over 6.5 inches tall! As far as ground clearance is concerned, it likely has all or more than any other m/t at Nmrcc, and if it doesn't, give me a number in inches, I'll go a half inch over it, I'll put on those 9" tall imex "boggers", and I run the damn thing like that! Hell, if you want, I'll spend all day tomorrow mounting up some god damn garden tractor tires!
But wait a minute, it seems that when you go to purchase Truggy tires, they are listed under monster truck tires! So then, exactly what is the definition of monster truck tires, and Truggy tires for that matter? And not to mention, who says the other m/t racers can't use "Truggy" tires, oh I mean MONSTER TRUCK TIRES!!!
