View Full Version : Oak Hill r/c Speedway 2010 outdoor season wheels-a-fire 07-12-2010, 09:52 PM Well, me and the boys are a go for the 14 of august, can't wait:woohoo: jgullo53 07-13-2010, 08:19 AM if anybody has an SC10 they wanna sell as a roller with body let me know, looking to get one!!! theycallmeSDZ 07-13-2010, 12:37 PM Here are the pics from the "rumble on the Hill" http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y229/oopseyesharted/Oakhill%20rumble%20on%20the%20hill%20july%2010%202 010/ Sorry Nitro Guys.....you got a little left out of these. snwchris 07-13-2010, 12:48 PM Some nice pics and great action shots as well. I was able to see a few of mine in there as well for "Rock Mafia" chim13 07-13-2010, 08:19 PM What happened to all the nitro pics I saw you take a bunch of them:confused::confused: Teddy Johnson 07-13-2010, 08:36 PM Bookie has them Chris, he will get them on soon. 4WD Racer 07-13-2010, 08:56 PM Wheels-a-fire, just in case missed my earlier post, could you explain what happened on your table that caused the lipo's and the chargers to go up? What was the reason for the Lipo letting loose like that? Brand/Type of Lipo battery used also, and charger used (was setting on CC/CV or NiMH, etc)? I'm very interested in hearing what happened in your case at the pit table, it will help to prevent a similar espidoe in the future. Were they Roar approved hardcase lipo's, soft lipo's, etc Thanks. jgullo53 07-13-2010, 10:00 PM i was not sitting there watching it, but the only thing that comes to mind would be two things for it to go up. one was a short circuit some how, pos wire touching neg, or the charger settings were for a different series of batteries. say it was a 4s and it was somehow on 5s. i charge my 2s packs at 11 amps and i never have had a single issue wrong with them. i also charge my 1s pack for oval at 12 amps. those could be my only guesses... jar 07-13-2010, 11:47 PM Nice pictures, especially this one; Good O'l orange. (http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y229/oopseyesharted/Oakhill%20rumble%20on%20the%20hill%20july%2010%202 010/?action=view¤t=Oakhilljuly102010037.jpg) wheels-a-fire 07-14-2010, 12:36 PM Wheels-a-fire, just in case missed my earlier post, could you explain what happened on your table that caused the lipo's and the chargers to go up? I'm very interested in hearing what happened in your case at the pit table, it will help to prevent a similar espidoe in the future. Were they Roar approved hardcase lipo's, soft lipo's, etc Thanks. Sorry, I think I did miss it, The only thing I can say about the battery smoking out is a rock must have punctured the soft case or the sheer impact of the Big Air Triple may have caused it. I only had one other pack go on me while charging it and it was a cheap China made Batt like this one. My son Brandon said, he seen a pin hole of smoke starting toward the front of the pack which makes me think the pack may have ruptured after my last heat when I crashed off the Big triple and broke a front arm on that same side as the battery, I'am just not sure. I only cycled the Turnigy 5000 5s 20c softpack about 3 times total and used a Imax B6 charger which was set on 5s manually. I use this charger on all my packs which are also 2s turnigy softpacks and have not had one issue to date. I'am going with a hard case this time being how exposed they are with the side cell configuration. I don't think it was a bad battery, it just needed more protection. My 2cents 4WD Racer 07-14-2010, 12:50 PM Hey thanks Wheel-a-fire ( I like that handle name btw, cool idea, lol) That does make sense what you said, and thanks for explaining what may have had happened. It does sound like a puncture may have led to what you said happening. I'm sorry to hear that. I do hope the hardcase idea works better for you next time out, as it should offer more protection (from a puncture etc) if the pack is exposed more towards the outside during running the car. Makes sense. Hope to see you and others at Oakhill again soon as they re-open on July 31st and thereafter. theycallmeSDZ 07-14-2010, 01:48 PM Here is the action pic for anyone that missed the "Fire on the Hill"! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y229/oopseyesharted/Oakhill%20rumble%20on%20the%20hill%20july%2010%202 010/Oakhilljuly102010115.jpg wheels-a-fire 07-14-2010, 02:08 PM Here is the action pic for anyone that missed the "Fire on the Hill"! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y229/oopseyesharted/Oakhill%20rumble%20on%20the%20hill%20july%2010%202 010/Oakhilljuly102010115.jpg Oh, the memories, Thanks:wave: 4WD Racer 07-14-2010, 03:49 PM Oh my, fire on the hill for real, lol bennyboy 07-14-2010, 03:52 PM Oh, the memories, Thanks:wave: Vic, I could have sweared you showed up with a full head of hair and than, poof it was gone. Should have sent Ted Johnson in to put out the flames and save your hair. Tim Teddy Johnson 07-14-2010, 04:49 PM Wow I guess ...................... BOOM POOOOOOOOOOOOOOf bookie 07-14-2010, 05:16 PM To bad Teddy didn't have a run away, the breeze from it going past and the splash from the swamp would have put out the fire. lol  wheels-a-fire 07-14-2010, 06:35 PM Vic, I could have sweared you showed up with a full head of hair and than, poof it was gone. Should have sent Ted Johnson in to put out the flames and save your hair. Tim   Teddy Johnson 07-14-2010, 07:24 PM Here I come, where did that fire go? Stealth_RT 07-14-2010, 08:58 PM I don't think hard case batteries are any better protected than soft case. Jason's battery that went up at Classic was a Turnigy hard case, AFAIK. Hard case just means you cant see cell damage or poor construction or swelling until its too late. Plus the extra weight and size that no one wants. bennyboy 07-14-2010, 09:52 PM I found this site very informative on lipo batteries http://www.hardingenergy.com/pdfs/6%20Lithium%20Polymer.pdf Hard case or soft case lipo, I am sure glad I missed out on the nicad and brushed motors. I definitely have a healthy respect for you "old timers" Tim bennyboy 07-14-2010, 10:05 PM I sure hope WTF/TENT CITY will be a complete team on the 14th. I missed Eric last Saturday, I like his OCD when it comes to working on cars. Sure helped Ben out 2 weeks ago.. If he needs any help with the bathroom, he is re-doing for the misses, let him know I have a big hammer and know how to use it. Demo is my specialty. Tim bennyboy 07-14-2010, 10:09 PM Does anyone think Vic will get a toupe to replace the hair he lost in the lipo fire? Tim 4WD Racer 07-14-2010, 10:52 PM Post count sure is going up for you, ha ha Is it working so far? Or are they counting all those posts as one? j/w About Lipo's, soft case or hardcase aside, usually staying with those that are ROAR approved helps. They undergo overcharge, underdischarge, & drop tests and others 24 hrs limit tests that increase their likelyhood of safety and reliablity on or off the track. Just not worth the risk sometimes the other route at all...Safety first. wheels-a-fire 07-14-2010, 11:33 PM I don't think hard case batteries are any better protected than soft case. Jason's battery that went up at Classic was a Turnigy hard case, AFAIK. Hard case just means you cant see cell damage or poor construction or swelling until its too late. Plus the extra weight and size that no one wants. I"am almost certain Jason's was a soft case just like mine but 4s, if it was a Turnigy Hardcase I have never seen one except for 2s configurations. I'am staying with Hardcase batts from now on, weight or no weight, I just feel more comfortable with them. badassrevo 07-15-2010, 08:38 AM Jasons battery was Hard case. the case was still melted to the bottom of the battery tray after the fire. bennyboy 07-15-2010, 10:40 PM We had two Protek, hard case, 5600mah that were only 2 months old that swelled up. They would take a charge and balance, but were swelled up Returned both to Amain 2 weeks ago and they replaced both. Just received them today. tim bennyboy 07-15-2010, 10:46 PM Hey Ted, What is the scoop with the "Nightmare on the Hill Sootout" Tell Zerb and Chris to forget those hogs, and the Roar on the shore, and keep their heads into racing. I had a Sportster back in the 70's and my buddy would follow me on his Honda 750CB picking up nuts and bolts. Vibrated so much I had to stop every 30 minutes to pee. Tim 4WD Racer 07-15-2010, 11:06 PM Bennyboy, I hear ya, that'll be great for racing to resume at Oakhills w/o stopping, yeah oh well, sigh... what can we say or do? ha ha Teddy Johnson 07-16-2010, 08:57 AM Remember, this weekend and next the track will be closed. We will be reopening on the 31st. As far as the 14th I'm getting things together. Ill let everyone know as soon as possible. 4WD Racer 07-16-2010, 03:33 PM Bennyboy, what do you think led to both of your 5600 Lipo's (two of them) swelling up within the same time frame of each other? Any idea as to what may have happened in your case, perhaps charge rate used, depth of discharge before re-charging, etc. Thanks. bennyboy 07-16-2010, 06:12 PM They slowly started swelling since the first time we used them. Other people had the same problems with their 5600s swelling up to. A-Main thinks it was a bad batch. jgullo53 07-16-2010, 08:19 PM that sucks it happened, those are not cheap!!! (unless you went to hobbyking lol) bennyboy 07-17-2010, 09:13 AM Bennyboy, what do you think led to both of your 5600 Lipo's (two of them) swelling up within the same time frame of each other?Any idea as to what may have happened in your case, perhaps charge rate used, depth of discharge before re-charging, etc. Thanks. Dave Both were used in Ben's e-buggy and we had them wired in series to obtain 4s. charged at 1C and balanced. Why swelled, who knows. When I talked to Amain, I was not the first to have a problem. The buggy came with two Tenergy 5000mah. We used and charged them the same as the 5600. Amain replaced at no charge and we will see what happens. They gave me no hazzle about replacing, today that is worth something, in my book. Tim 4WD Racer 07-17-2010, 11:21 AM Hey Tim, thanks for letting me know. I appreciate your giving me info what happened in your case. I'm glad to hear they were replaced for you, and you guys were fortunate to catch them (the lipo packs in series) swelling up before using any further. Thanks goodness. jgullo53 07-17-2010, 05:04 PM how late in the year on average is offroad running til??? bennyboy 07-17-2010, 11:54 PM how late in the year on average is offroad running til???
