bustedpiecesrc 12-14-2009, 02:30 PM Racing the Northern Nationals at Proving Grounds yesterday made me wonder: Where are all the nitro racers in West Michigan? Proving Grounds finally offers the nitro racers a place to run during the winter within close proximity, but not many people are showing up. I would like to invite you to comment on why people do not show up. I know that money is thight for some and other do not like to be in the fumes indoors and I understand that. I am just trying to figure out what can be done to improve the quality of nitro racing in West Michigan by getting more people to come out. Any reasons or suggestions would be greatly appreciated in order to improve the indoor nitro racing in (West) Michigan.
Myself, I don't like racing every weekend during the winter. I would rather have something go on every other week instead of every week. The fumes don't bother me too much, as I have a mask to wear to keep me from inhaling the fumes if it gets too bad. Money is thight, but I can find room in my budget to spend $20 on racing fees to go racing! What are some of your thoughts?
I know you nitro guys are out there, as we see plenty of you during the summer season. I am just looking for more people to play with during the winter!
I wonder sometimes is it because the indoor tracks are smaller and more 1/10th scale friendly, which is fine. On most outdoor tracks you can really open up an 1/8 scale and also air it out where indoors you are really limited. When you air an 1/8 scale out indoors it also may come with a price due to the harder terrain. I love both, probably gas more, but could see this as a possible turn off to guys running nitro. I also see the same guys running electric that were racing gas this summer, I believe it helps hone everyones skills. Does everyone just put their nitro away for the winter though? Possibly not enough time for both.
I do think a bi-weekly schedule is not a bad idea if it will increase turn-out. Why not?
i loved the facility, its big and it has everything you need to play but as honda says its geared more towards 1/10 than 1/8... the last track layout was a little tight for 1/8 i thought.... i havent made it out to see and run on this layout you have now but it looks good in the pics... i love nitro but i think guys are running or converting to electric cause its easier except waiting for batts to charge, yeah nitro is gas and go but theres still alot of tuning and adjustments.. but thats my thoughts on the question at hand
ehartman_49348 12-14-2009, 02:54 PM The current layout is good for both electric and nitro, both 1/10th scale and 1/8th scale, including truggy! The truggy race was very exciting yesterday, as position 2, 3 & 4 were battling all the way through the end of each of the mains (we ran triple mains)!
So it would be nice to have a race night during the week like a Tuesday night instead of just practice night.
You don't go even on the practice night during the week though, if it was a race night would that make you more inclined to go? You would think if you really wanted to run nitro you would go even if it was just for practice.
You know your ready to come to the dark side Nolan. Just sell that nitro and get the 1/10th truck and be done with it! Andy Waters is racing with us in the 1/10th truck class and he seems to be having a blast with it.
buglite97 12-14-2009, 04:29 PM Couple things that for the most part keep me away is gas mask and butt cold. Even if I race outdoors with a light/no wind my eyes water like crazy (kinda make ya wonder why I like nitro?) have to double up the visene before I raced. This summer was by far crappy, cold during the day and worse at night, froze many times at dukes oval in aug, go figure. I like to race and be warm, is the track heated? I would like to try the new layout because I didn't hear anything great about the last one. Oh I didn't have any tires for hard packed dirt, took a gamble on a set I ordered last week because I was planning on the 13th but wife had to work. I have to be proved wrong (lake of effort on my part) but it doesn't look as fun indoors. there I rambled long enough. I do miss racing with the core (usuals) nitro guys though.
scott
buglite97 12-14-2009, 04:36 PM Not true, but for some reason only 20 of them show up to race...
even harder getting us to show up at the same time at the same track.
Lawn Dart 12-14-2009, 06:10 PM Does anyone know if Jim planned on posting the pics from 12/9?
rodeojoe 12-14-2009, 06:16 PM There is only one real way to save money in rc racing, dont race!
wrong... sitting on your computer and not racing can cost sometimes two to three to even four times more than racing one night.... what's that rodeojoe guy been up too?
gmoneyn21 12-14-2009, 06:21 PM i think in most part NITRO raceing indoors has had a low turn out for the last three yrs in MICH, i find that n the last 3 yrs Most nitro guys just dont like to travel ? cost more to run the cars indoors , fumes, and just plan
As a racer i my self like to travel and Ind, and CRCrc, chicago, nitro turn out seems to b the best! 35, to 50 nitro racers!!! SATURDAY, SUNDAY i ask y this is and, what i c is that nitro guys here dont like to stick to the same races on the same days , AND THE KILLER!!!!!!!! WE KNOW HAVE 3 TRACKS
N MICH INDOORS SO THIS KEEPS ALL NITRO GUYS SPLIT ??
I WOULD LIKE TO C SOME TRACKS COME TOGETHER ON NITRO SO WE CAN GET THOSES BIG TURN OUTS:):):):):):):)

That would be nice but most track owners dont like that. For example I sent a PM to every track you mentioned and the only person to respond to me was Kevin at Stateline. Everyone else has ignored me thus far. Hard to "make" anyone want to work together.

Points well taken. During nitro days, it does get cold in the building to keep the fumes down. That's part of racing during the winter in MI. The pits is heated and very comfortable though! Even though it was cold marshalling Sunday, the coldness didn't seem to bother me as much while I was on the drivers stand...
I would like to try the new layout because I didn't hear anything great about the last one.
The new layout is a lot of fun for both 1/10th and 1/8th scale! The previous layout, even though a bit tight for 1/8th scale, was fun and challenging as well. Not sure what negatives you have heard about the previous layout, other than the tightness...

I would have to agree with this partially. There were few nitro guys from the west side that visited FTR on a regular basis over the past few years. I thought that by having a facility on the west side, the other west siders would show up, but not so far. Seems like the east siders are more willing to travel, even though several people from the east side that I thought that would show up for the nitro Northern Nationals, didn't show....

I spoke with Mike Sontag (rcman1?) of AMS Hobbies/Raceway about something like this and he is more than willing to work with Proving Grounds/Team Virus Racing to put together a multi-location series this winter. Revo, let me know if you want his phone # and I can send it to you.

I have seen them the are cool not sure how to down or the price 15.00 for a photo or is that for the size of the file ????
GNS Racing 12-14-2009, 09:46 PM Every Saturday we run Nitro at 10AM and electric at 6PM so you get both race programs on the same day.
Its almost impossible to schedule anything after an event, because you never know how many entries you will get and how long the event will last.
guess i wasent aware of what you did on a normal weekend or didnt pay attention. lol i like the idea of a points series between you and ams even if it was only the two races or 1 more place involved. i would be inclined to do that if each race was a month apart. and i will be there for a normal saturday race to run both sessions, just not untill after the holidays!!!!!!!
one other thought mayby a special nitro monster truck bash race. theres got to be some old monsters out there waiting to be punished we have about 5 in the north that still run them in the summer.
any body looking to blow the dust off some monster trucks?

Monster trucks, hhhmmm, now that's a thought GNS. Where did all the monster trucks go?There plenty fun and fast, a little sluggish handling but PG would be a fun track for the old Monsters. Anyone else think so?
JSPhotography 12-14-2009, 10:15 PM Does anyone know if Jim planned on posting the pics from 12/9?
I didn't make it to the 12/9 shots, put up another 35 from Saturday though. What are you lookingfor from 12/9? Tomorrow night I will go searching and try to start with what you after.

The $15 download is for the original data. Unless you are going to print a poster you do not need that. For most computer stuff the $5 low res will do you just fine. Thanks for checking out my site.

Thanks,
JSPhotography 12-14-2009, 10:33 PM OK, My site is getting a lot of hits so you guys are looking but nobody is ordering anything. The 125 I put up last night from Saturday have now been viewed over 2000 times. Are you not liking what you are seeing? Do you want something different? I just have not hit the right group of cars? Let me know what I need to be doing?
I just put up a few more from Saturday. Tomorrow night I will try to get some up from last Wednesday night.
I will use this thread to let you know what I'm doing. You guys use it to tell me how to do things better.
I don't know about the other guys, but the only stuff I would be interested in is action shots of my vehicles. The pictures in the pit area are nice, but it is nothing I would ever consider purchasing. There are some great shots in there but so far I can only find about 5 pictures of my cars. The last 4 or 5 are my green truck, my buggy matches the truck, but I don't see any of it yet. I will keep an eye out for them as you get the images uploaded. Nice shots though!

Because very few guys have them. The guys that do rarely race!
Bright side is shorter race days. I just assume race my E 1/8s on nitro day because of that. Rather huff fumes for a few minutes, than be there a whole day. I did not even really notice the fumes on sunday. Might be a good idea to only run um 1 a month or for bigger races, otherwise there will be very few 2 none.
but whatever
gmoneyn21 12-15-2009, 07:03 AM guys you know if you race nitro ! there will be fumes!! in doors and out
but the low nitro turn outs will be the same all winter long do to the racer not coming together, for the most part i only c big nitro turn out?? IF THERE IS A ( TROPHY RACE ) CASH RACE!! AND OR BOTH ?? IF YOU GUYS KNOW ANY ONE TRACK OWNER THAT HAS BEEN IN THE GAME, PLEASE ASK THEM!!
If you look at ELE racers, all those guys run together, back in 2003 to 2006 mich indoors at D BS was the only off road track and nitro always had 30 to 40 nitro 35-60 ele boy i hope we get there soon!
as a idea may be try holding once a mounth point series races between the tracks, c what you guys come up with in mich?:woohoo:

Your not the only one that has been confused. There is a lot available on my site, www.jsphotography.net sometimes I think too much. I can get the pictures for you. Let me know which ones and I'll bring them. Email me at jstafford@cablespeed.com.
In regards to the site
When you find a picture you want and click the buy tab it takes you to another screen. On that screen there are three tabs across the top, Prints, Merchandise, and Download. Prints provides a list of available sizes and finish. There is a description on the left as you click through them. The Merchandise tab takes you to a list of products like coffee cups, mouse pads, etc that your picture will be printed on. Pretty cool for the office or presents. The Download is just that, the data is downloaded to your computer. If you are going to just use the data on your computer for screen savers, wallpaper, or viewing the low res option is probably all you need.
Hope this helps
Jim
I believe your part of that also unless your scared to put yours on the track:wave:
I have run my 1/8th a few times, Im just not comfortable running it indoors yet. I am use to big wide open outdoor tracks, and trying to run it indoors has been a drastic change for me. Its been sitting on my shelf for the last month and has not moved. If I dont use it much soon, its going to be up for sale.

How does Mike feel about this? Or does he think your cute?

honda_stuntboy 12-15-2009, 09:52 AM I see no problems with bumping in electric. Everbody has at least 2-3 sets of batteries. That's no different than having an extra gallon of fuel just in case.
I agree. 1/8 electric is a little hard just because of the charge time, but with most classes I think this would be a cool thing. It gives you that one last chance to move up, but if that is normal that is cool too! Learning all this electric stuff again. I luv it!!!

Get well paulie!!, I am sure after 3 mos. you will be ready to get some track time in!!
Uncle E 12-15-2009, 12:49 PM I think the triple A-Main format went really well!
Think about triple 5 minute mains, most electric packs can do that. Triple 10-minute mains you'd need 3 packs. This format changes the game from nitro/elec to simply 1/8th scale!
You could do qualifiers this way also! Makes marshalling way simpler too.
bobgrmi2 12-15-2009, 12:51 PM sOMEBODY WANT TO BUY SOME POINTS! cheap! i'll be out for atleast 3 mos.
Wouldn't it been easier to just admit the strike would not have won? Guess we will just have to wait to see.
Hope you get moving around soon.
Best of luck.
