I'm messing about on the computer with those track sketches I posted a while back, adding jumps, dips, etc. I'll print them out and bring some copies on saturday. Not sure I'll be there by 10 though - have some family errands to run first.

I talked to the guy delivering the dirt today, and I have bad news. He told me the dirt was too wet to deliver and that he would call me next week. So this weekend if a new layout is completed it may not have all the jumps we want until I can get the dirt delivered. Its unfortunate but not the end of the world. Charlie

Pisser. Charlie, does that mean you won't be pulling up the pipes in the track today ?

I just got back from the track and the pipes were still there, so unless he is doing it this evening, that means no, not today.

I ran a LiFe pack today for the first time.

I took my Slash 4X4 to the track today with two batteries: SMC 40C 5000 mAHr LiPo charged to 95% capacity (per my Hyperion) ansd a HobbyCity ("Tenergy") 4500 mAHr LiFe pack charged to full capacity. The Slash had a Novak HV4.5 with stock gearing (13:54) and a Mamba Max Pro controller. The MMP was set to "Smart Sense" mode (not "CHEAT mode") with "LOW" timing. Ready to run weight was 5.75 pounds

The LiPo gave me about 12-13 minutes run time to a 6.8V cutoff (not sure exactly because I ran a few laps before I set the timer).

The LiFe ran 13 minutes to the point where the car slowed down noticeably (no cutoff). I did not feel the car slowing down until the very last lap. Motor temperature at the end of the run was about 125-130.

Interestingly, the LiPo battery at the end of its run was warmer than the LiFe battery at the end of its run.

I'm sure the car must have been a little slower with the LiFe than the LiPo, but it seemed plenty fast enough for the track (which was completely dry and dusty). Maybe when there is more traction, it might be easier to see a difference.

[Shh! Its a secret!]{ask steve}

I liked it. It was kind of like driving an E-8 except not as violent. Similar also to my E-CRT.5.

The track was completely dry and sandy and I was still able to get around with what appeared at the time to be decent speed. But then it has been 6 months since I drove that track and there was no one else to compare to, so it might not have been as fast as I thought. Once I got the preloads right I had no problems with the backstraight double, but I'm not running the standard shock/spring setup.

The spur really got chewed up in 2 packs because of all the grit. I ran the second pack without the gear cover and I think I got less grit in the gears. I think if I had a Novak pinion it might have gotten damaged, but I was using the hardened pinion that came with the truck. The driveshaft cover isn't quite long enough - twice a stone got in by the slipper nut and make a horrible screeching sound until I figured out what it was. Driveshaft now has some nice silver scoring through the blue anodizing.

I had the same problem with my driveshaft. Mine has that silver scoring also. What tires were you using? Did you get an RTR or Platinum?

I also have a suggestion for all you 4x4 Slashers. I removed my front diff the other day to change out the grease to diff fluid. There was a lot of grit inside which was kind of alarming to me. The best I could tell was its getting in through the diff housing / shock tower interface. You are all probably saying huh? Oddly enough, when I took the shock tower off, its fitted in a groove in the diff housing. Remove the shock tower and guess what you see? The ring gear. So I am going to smear a little silicone in and around that area to keep the ring and pinion gear clean. There was no grit in the gear teeth. But there was grit in those places where the grease tends to accumulate. Just a heads up to all of you guys who have not opend a diff housing yet. Ill let you know what I find in the rear diff after I add diff fluid tonight.

easy fix for the drive-shaft for those that are getting rocks in there..flip the truck over you'll see the drive-shaft exposed right by the servo....get yourself some gorilla tape to cover the gaping hole by the drive-shaft..fixed..

Did a different fix for the driveshaft gaping hole at the front before running it the first time. It doesn't address the open area at the back.

Running a PE.

Someone on Traxxas message board suggested just stripping the anodizing and polishing the driveshaft so the scoring isn't as noticable.

The grit in the rear draftshaft is getting in from the Brushless motor housing plate. It has a small gap underneath that lets in dirt.

Are we talking about the same thing? I wonder, at least if you call it a "small gap." The opening where the stone got in to make the screeching sound is about 1/2" by 1/2". Smaller grit gets in there and scores the driveshaft. I've outlined it in red in the picture:

Mark,

That part on mine is covered by that clear plastic as well. That motor plate that the HV connects too. I see yours is chrome. UNderneath it there is a gap to move the motor to allow the pinion to mesh with the spur. That little gap allows dirt to get in.

Well gents, the track work weekend is officially underway!

-Black tubing and spikes were removed
-Both water drains were dug out
-Flushing the drain pipes out was in process
-Speakers were being worked on
-Authorized RC club members sign was posted
-Dirt was cleared out around the outside wood walls and around the white tubing for the Bobcat to get closer
-Carl came in with the Bobcat to level the track until the fresh dirt gets delivered next weekend. My back thanks you Carl.
-Track design was selected, looks great, hopefully the person who submitted it will re-post the final layout drawing again.

As for the plywood around the outside of the track, several people discussed taking up a collection to purchase new wood to replace all existing outer walls.

I for one will donate. I spoke with Nick and mentione setting up a paypal account to collect the funds.

Well I say we had gotten a lot done today! I left at 5:00 and the track was flat and smooth. They had just started the outline of the track. I don't think much more can get done without more dirt.

For the guys that stayed later what else is there to do?

I just got home from dinner a little bit ago, and I'll try to get the layout we picked up tonight. IIRC, we were going to flip the layout so the long straight is in front. I just need to spend a few minutes figuring out whether mirroring or rotating the layout works better. And add some dimensions and the gridlines back in for reference.

The black pipe is down, and we have a layout (just no jumps yet).

If anyone has a quad/utility vehicle, we sure could use it tomorrow as the tractor is not cooperating - trans and or belts seem to be shot.

I will be back up at the track again tomorrow at 10, although I will not be staying till 7 again.

I will start collecting funds for the walls tomorrow, Ray said he will flip the bill up front and we will be paying him back.

Also, I am going to be putting a jar out on the food table starting the first race day for tractor/utility vehicle donations, as there are new expenses the club needs to cover this year with the shift in Morris County staffing. I have not talked to the board about an increase to race entries yet - but it may be within the realm of possibilities as we really need a new (at least to us) tractor/utility vehicle for track up-keep.

Let me know everyone's thoughts. Keep in mind we have not had an increase to race entries since we have been the board (we also introduced the discount for additional classes raced). We would probably be talking a $1-2 price hike I would think to support a new tractor/utility vehicle (again just thinking out loud here to try to drum up some additional funds for the club).

I agree we need to get a new or newer tractor .If it takes a small increase in race fees to accomplish this so be it . JMO

I won't be able to make it tomorrow. Something came up that I need to deal with.

As with the increase in entries I don't see a problem with that. Is there a way to know how much more the club needs to bring in? If the entries are increased and enough money is raised would you lower the entries back or keep them at the new rate?

How about trying to raise the money as donations from the members. That way we could claim them on our taxes. It may not be that much but every bit helps. Just a thought.

Okay, here's the new track layout - the light grey grid lines are 5' apart for reference, and the stippled areas are marshalling locations. Don't get hung up on the jumps/whoops/dips, they're just shown to give an idea what it may look like and are subject to change.

I wish it was that easy, we are non-profit not a charity, so the donations are not tax deductable.

As far as the increase would go, it would all depend on what we get. If we get something new, that the club would finance, then the entries would stay higher until it is paid off (years). Then we could revisit the whole entry fee amount.

Pretty much, the club would need to bring in enough to cover the tractor, so with a $1 increase, the club would raise say, an additional $120 (as an average) per race (if there are no rain outs) and say on average, 2 races per month, so a total of $240/month.

Crunching some quick numbers, and using MSRP of utility vehicles. A $6000 vehicle, with 4.99% and 24months we would be talking about $263.20 per month. Something doable with a $1 hike in entries, as long as we maintain 120 entries per week. Obviously this is an estimate based on MSRP and a 4.99% financing. More than likely we would get a better price, and possible better financing, depending on any club connections.

Actually the layout is the mirror of that, Matt. We rotated the drawing 180 and have the big sweeper on the other side of the track.

Hmm, when I rotated the track 180°, I came up with this:
http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr312/buzzbomberv1/dirtrunners-2010-layoutREVE.gif
Only problem is that by my measurements, the drain winds up IN the lane unless we make some adjustments. However, I'm sure it can be solved; maybe you guys already figured this out after I left today.

Indeed they did, the drain is actually in a slightly different location than the original drawing says, so it still fit in the layout. I believe the drain is actually shifted a couple feet to the right in this view.
