The pond needed it. Yesterday when we were running the pump, the pickup was sucking air. I thought the pond was knackered.

Well if you guys want to race tomorrow you better show up early .The offroad track was under water as bad as anytime I have seen recently . Bob and I got must of the water off but it will still need a lot of work . We dragged the oval with the Iron Maiden but thats it once the tractors transmission gets hot it doesnt pull real well . If either of the two Brians read this we will need the quad in the morning .

Show up early boys and girls, the track is a Huge muddy MESS. Dan and I did what we could. I buried the second hose pipe since it wasn't getting done anytime soon.

Also, the trans in the tractor is pretty much toast.

Thanks Dan/Bob for working on the track. Pisser about the tractor too..

Good news is only 20% chance of more precip tonite and tomorrow looks to be dry mid 80s.
I'll try and get up there for 8am ish once I get the kids up and the requisite high fat / corn syrup / drive thru breakfast.

I'll send Brian Jr a note on facebook about the quad in case he doesn't come by HT tonite.

I have been using team check point and protek rc lipos with almost no issues. I had the negative connector melt out of one of my protek 3,800 packs I used in the sprint car. May have been a poor bullet connection I really don't blame the pack. The 5,600 has had no issues.

I had a 5000 protek swell with about 6 cycles on it Amain replaced it for free now I have another 5000 protek ( which I bought this indoor season ) swelling I prob will be looking a getting another brand . I use a lipo cutoff and a balancer on every charge I was thinking of calling Amain and seeing if they would replace it but I think they will say it has been too long . I am not bad mouthing Amain just telling my experience .They are good price but two out of three have swelled .

Yea I had some similar mishaps lately, a 5200 2S 50C SMC pack and a 4900 1S SMC pack did the same thing to me, swelled so much they popped the plastic cases open - funnily enough - didn't happen while charging - happened between races in my car - guess leaving them in an enclosed space for a day or 2 in the heat was a mistake - learned that one the hard and expensive way - now all my lipos go with me into the house after race day in their lipo sack - been thinking of bringing a cooler to keep them in at the track to be on the safe side, especially on those hot July/August days ....

Maybe its time to look into Lithium-Ion-Phosphate like Mr. Stern?? Charging at 30amps and not worrying about too many cycles or too high of temps does sound nice! Too bad about the lower voltage though, probably a plus for slash spec. Maybe not a problem in the 4wd slash - although I would need a new power plant - Intriguing thought!!

I am running LiFe in my 2WD offroad truck and have used LiFe in the Slash 4X4 with a HV4.5. When Nick drove my 4X4 with the LiFe he said it didn't have quite as much punch as he was used to (or expected, or something like that), so I am back to LiPo for that and yes, I can tell the difference. But for the 2WD it is nice - makes the car more controllable.

To anyone planning on getting LiFe packs, you should go gentle with them for the first 10-20 cycles. Meaning don't run them until they dump. A-Main recommends only discharging them about half way on the break-in cycles. But at $25/pack for the Hobby City LiFe packs, you can afford to have extras so you can short-cycle them for a while. Running them in 5-minute heats or mains would be an ideal way to break them in.

These are the ones I got: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10309

They are not in stock right now, but you can ask to be emailed when they become available if you want to buy some.

Yea Bob the 5600's were what I was looking at and a 5000 for my slash, you think amain is about the best for priceing?
I to think that my pack swelled only a heat issue from being charged in the sun because the charger did complete the charge and that battery worked fine, in my panic I turned off both chargers and didn't complete the charge for my sprint car and that seemed to dump after 8 laps, the cooler thing Nick suggested sounds smart

If you don't mind bullet connectors for the packs, ProMatch has some very nice ones at good prices: http://www.promatchracing.com/proddetail.php?prod=4506

I won't use bullets and the packs they have that are hard-wired have the leads coming out the ends and don't fit in any car I have.

All of mine except one SMC pack, are bullet connectors. I would prefer hard wired packs, but one pack doesn't fit all applications.

So far I have only one failure. A melted negative female connector. I guess the resistance was way too high and cooked it.

I charge my 5000 packs at 8 amps and when I charge thru the balanced, about once every 5th charge then I charge at 5amps,I thought that you could charge up to 2c,but I guess not in the sun on a hot day, lesson learned

Charge rate would depend on the pack. I charge all of mine at 1c. I keep enough on hand that it is never urgent to get them recharged. so I have no problem charging at the lower rate.

Just my .02

Mark and Brian can shed far more light on the subject than myself.

The only thing I charge at 2C are my LiFe packs, but they are rated for charging up to 5C. I just don't have a charger that will do 20 amps.

Most other packs I charge at 1C, most of the time. Exceptions are my 2C rated SMC 4000s that I charge at 5A just so I don't need a separate setting for them. Same with the 2C rated Promatch 4S 5100s - I charge them at 6A because I have a setting for a 6000 mAHr MaxAmps pack.

I also have enough packs that I don't need to charge at higher rates to be ready for my races. I charge my race packs to 80% the day before so what charging I need to do at the track doesn't take long.

They should.

The reason I don't want to use bullets is that there is the risk that the tension on the fingers gets weaker and resistance goes up and you melt a socket like happened to Bob. Plenty of people use bullets. But this is one problem I don't want to have to think about, so I avoid batteries with bullet connectors.

How can I find out how much more battery life I have. I use a Onyx 230. Is there some kind of gauge ? Just started with lipos, so i'm still learning.

Mark - If you have never used them you should try the Orion bullet connectors. They fit so tight that for all intents and purposes they are permanent. They are VERY tough to get in and out of the ports, and they never seem to get easier with time. The fingers have a twist to them which is I think the secret to them. I've been using the same leads for 2 years now, and they fit like new. Not cheap (or easy to find), but they never get hot or loosen.

Thank you Gary, I will keep that in mind if I ever buy packs with bullet connectors because I can't find suitable hard wired packs.

60% charge store over time will degrade runtime. I discharge down to 3.1v per cell at 20 amps for storage. If you balance your cells all the time (and buy quality packs such as promatch) this lower voltage is not a problem. I do check them if I dont use them for 2-3 months to make sure they are ok. Many of the packs im running are on their 3rd season of racing. I charge at 5-6 amps for 5000 mah packs most of the time, even if rated for 2c charge, this also gives longer life to packs. Also I charge the night before racing up to 60% to make charging go quicker during race day because of the many packs I have to charge so this eliminates the need to charge at higher rates. I still use qty 2 of 2S packs in all my 4S classes so like sunday I charged 20 packs to race 7 classes LOL. I dont have 20 packs I use the same pack a second time and have a few spares just in case. On 4s I use 2 of the same type pack that I have also checked runtime for both to be close. This really only matters if we go back to 10 min mains or in a class like electric LM where current draw is higher.
I kinda agree with mark, having a built in bullet plug and having trouble with one makes a pack useless where a deans could just be replaced. My Hyperion chargers have a store mode which puts the packs at around 60%. It is quite convenient.:)

Ok guys, the latest round of pictures are up:
http://public.fotki.com/JacobsRC/dirt-runners/dirt-runners-7-11-10/

This time I tried to cover different classes a little more (truggy / electric late model).
If I missed your cars I was either racing against you or I was passed out under Randy’s tent.
I also grabbed a quick video of the Nitro Late Model A-Main: YouTube- Late Model A-Main 7-11-10.3GP

As always, if there are particular images in my album you want, email me at RJacobs1@gmail.com with the image numbers and I’ll send you the original high-resolution files. Adam, I’ll have a DVD of all of the pictures for the facebook site next time we meet up.

Here are some of my favorites. Enjoy!
