View Full Version : OT: HDTV issue
seaQuest 11-18-2009, 03:42 PM I decided to purchase a Dynex HDTV at Best Buy, and found that when adjusting the custom picture settings in component (Y, Pb, Pr) and HDMI, the tint (or hue) adjustment is unavailable in these two modes; either grayed out, or non-existent. It's there for TV, AV, S-Video, etc. but not component or HDMI. I called Customer Service and haven't received a satisfactory answer. Anybody have any idea why a manufacturer would remove this adjustment from component and HDMI? This is common throughout the entire line of Dynex TVs, including their newest 32", which I purchased.
Trek Ace 11-18-2009, 04:16 PM Since HDMI and component analog are not encoded video, there are not the familiar tint controls like you would find with a composite or s-video input. Some sets may allow you to alter the color balance of digital and analog component signals with R-Y and B-Y controls, but not all offer this ability. I am not at all familiar with the off-brands, so I cannot comment on whether your set offers this or not. Those controls may be for use exclusively by a service technician.
I am by no means an expert, but I have a studio-grade plasma and front projector that do offer those options.
Magesblood 11-18-2009, 08:01 PM maybe it needs to be in a certain mode for you to adjust these things. I know with mine, there's things like game mode, movie mode, sports and so on. And then there's entertainment settings, game settings, theater setting...
Just saying that it might work for one or more of them but not for others.
Steve244 11-20-2009, 03:24 PM I think color and tint adjustments are holdovers from the bad days of NTSC* (standard def) for North American customers that required constant fiddling due to the standard and quality of TVs plus the quality of transmissions. (later NTSC sets had these, but I don't remember having to adjust it after about 1985...)
When I lived in Europe, I had a cheap TV and a nice Sony. Neither had these adjustments using pal/secam the colors are correct. The Sony was multi standard (accepted NTSC input from a VHS recorder) and would allow color/hue adjustments in that mode.
Colors over HDMI and component are "correct." That said, some HDTVs sold here may still have an adjustment for the North American market. Old habits die hard.
You didn't say whether the picture quality was correct or not, so I'm guessing it's pretty good.
* don't remember what it stands for, but Brits told me it was Never The Same Color!
Magesblood 11-20-2009, 03:29 PM could also be left over for users' personal preference too. Warm, cool, normal. This person's face looks too red, the grass looks too green or blue or the black looks too gray...
seaQuest 11-21-2009, 06:37 PM My picture quality is generally good across the board, especially for a 32" HDTV purchased for $300.00! I usually like to set my picture so that yellows are kind of like fire engine yellow with the tint set over to the green end of the spectrum. That way, flesh tones look great, and reds are very deep.
I've had experience with other HDTV sets, and this is the first time I've come across the tint function unavailable in component and HDMI. I'm looking to upgrade to either a Blu-ray disc player or an up-converting player, maybe those will help.
Steve244 11-21-2009, 06:59 PM I'm guessing to override the studio color values requires added circuitry when connected via component or HDMI. Circuits that aren't all that significant to a good picture with this technology at this price level.
Your computer monitor has color value adjustments, as does the video card on your computer. Most people don't touch these as the color is "right" from the get go. The only time I have is when I purchased a second monitor that I wanted to have the same color values right next to the original.
Oh, and fire engines are red. :hat:

Steve244 11-22-2009, 12:55 AM interesting the one from McMurdo is the color of yellow snow...
seaQuest 11-22-2009, 03:19 PM Yeah, scot, yellow fire engines used to be more prevalent several years ago. Red came back into vogue.
