View Full Version : 13.5 Single Cell Motor Timing
SmithRacing 11-17-2009, 10:35 AM It seems like here lately a lot of racers seem to be trying to slam as much timing in there motors and speedos as they can. I picked up a new 13.5 Duo 2 motor to try out last weekend and found that when i turned the timing down on a small compact track it gave the motor more effeciantcy and the motor was more accurate threw the corner. In lipo SC racing is timing really something that will improve the speed of ur car or is it just like throwing 4 teeth on ur pinion. Does timing do the same thing as Gearing or is it something that has to do with the force of the motor off the corner. Im starting to believe that 13.5 and 10.5 SC is really now all based on the momentom and consitancy of the car threw the corner. Not the speed of the motor out of the corner. I have seen guy throwing more and more gear at there motor and see no improvement in lap times.. Is 13.5 SC roll out truely higher then what we geared a 17.5 4cell car at or is it lower due to the acceleration needed off the corner..
Thanks guys so it so long.. Just trying to figure some things out..
GearboxGraphics 11-17-2009, 10:42 AM For me, I have found that less timing, more gear works better than throwing a ton of timing in via motor and/or speedo and running low gear. Most every time I add more timing, it just creates more heat with either no difference or slower lap times.
I am no expert, but to me, timing and gearing are not the same thing at all. I think you have to find the sweet spot with timing on these motors and if you go past that, the motor just creates more heat and becomes inefficient.
I do agree that momentum and consistency are what makes better lap times with 1c racing. The smoother and more free that I get my car, the better the lap times are always. Corner entry, rotation, and drive up off are extremely critical with 1c due to the light weight of the car overall. If the car is getting bogged down, there is just not enough voltage to pick it back up and drive it up off.
I am sure others can chime in a little better than me, but these are my experiences so far.....

J-Dub Racing 11-17-2009, 03:19 PM It all depends on the track. If you are on a small track, then turn the timing down, to get more low end out of the motor. If you turn the timing up it usually ends up adding lots of RPM which also creates heat.
All of this adds a new element to racing. Before it was brushes and comm drops, now its timing, and rotors...Its all the same just different!
ToddFalkowski 11-17-2009, 03:22 PM Timing isn't necessarily your friend in single cell, SmithRacing. Not just on "compact" tracks.
I've found running 0 to -5* timing has been the best. It produces the highest wattage and torque, but requires alot more gear. When I went to +5* to +10* timing all wattage was lost and efficiency was $hit.
