Er... You started a thread about the movie on 2 October: Holy Crap!!!!!!!!!! (http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showthread.php?t=267644&highlight=2012)

I don't plan to see it. I figure it'll turn out 2 ways.
1) The movie is about a bogus future

or

2) We'll all live it for real in 2012

No worries. I thought it was kinda funny, as I've seriously done similar stuff in the past, forgetting that I'd started a thread on a subject, then gone and started a new thread on the same subject....

BTW, I'll prolly go see this. Just 'cause I like good, popcorn disaster flix. I blame Irwin Allen and the '70's....

It looks like good wonky over-the-top SFX fun, so I'll probably catch it on DVD later.

See, this is exactly the sort of dumb, visual roller-coaster of a movie you couldn't pay me to watch on DVD. On the other hand, throw it up on an IMAX screen and I'm there opening weekend. :)

I'll be catching one of the digital screenings tonight. I'll let it be known my thoughts about it. A friend of mine says that it looks to be like a "two-hour demo reel" instead of a movie.
Well, we'll see.

I went on Saturday afternoon....the 4:45 showing was absolutley packed! I bought a big bag of popcorn (something I don't normally do) and sat back to see what this was all about. The story premise for the end of the world was certainly something I've never heard being talked about, so it's probably pseudo-science at best, but since it's just a story device.....I can let that go.

The film is pretty much a VFX roller coaster ride fairly early on, all the way to the end. A large number of "close calls" in this one, but it provided the right amount of suspense. The VFX are eye popping to say the least - quite stunning in fact. I wish that I'd seen this in IMAX (if it's available).

Not a lot of character story going on, but towards the last 45 minutes or so, there's some nice interaction and even some bits that will tug at a heartstring or two.

It's definitely a first class popcorn film (I finished mine), but if you want perfect science, etc, better switch over to the Science Channel. That being said, I'd go back and see this again in a few weeks. As for DVD, it'd probably lessen the impact of the visuals.

It's worse. It's just plain ignorance. Not that that should stop anyone enjoying the film as spectacle, as you say. But for the record, the Mayans said zip-all about the world ending. The year 2012 is their December 31st, and that's it - time to change the calendar, nothing more. If they were here, they'd either be disgusted or laughing their butts off.

We enjoyed it Sat night at the movie tavern. I liked everything about it. Of course, we had several cocktails and it seems a bit fuzzy to me now. Woody Harrelson did a good job playing himself. I didnt get why the russian took all the exotic cars with him. Did he think they were going to put them aboard the arks? Anyway, good show. Lots of fun for us and the 4 other couples who came with. Special effects are amazing.

No, I meant the scientific premise in the film. It seemed to be a conglomeration of scientific theories lumped together, which made the scenario itself an idea that had never been discussed. I'm trying not to give stuff away about the film for those that haven't seen it.

As for the Mayans being able to predict the end of the world many thousands of years after they'd gone.....I'm not so sure that they could (or not).

I do get what people are saying about the Mayan calendar just being and end to the calendar and nothing more significant than that and I pretty much agree with it. Tell that to those folks buying up empty missile silos in Kansas to build up as survival shelters - I think that they're almost as whacky as those that beleive that the end of the Mayan calendar is significant.

This movie made 150 million in three weeks and nobody here at the movie board liked it? I agree there was goofyness. It's a disaster flick. It was fun to watch. The giant Arks were pretty cool too. No one got any enjoyment from this? Seems most posters here dislike every Sci Fi movie that comes out. (that I can recall) Reread the threads. Does anybody like anything?

This forum should be called HeMan SciFi and Fantasy Movie Haters Forum.

I'm reluctant to post that I enjoy a movie that was meant to be enjoyed. Maybe thats the point. Its UNCOOL to like a good movie. If you are entertained by a movie, it means youre not smart enough to understand that it was actually a very stupid movie. Therefore, its uncool to post you actually like something. Everybodys seems so jaded. Borderline angry.

I still like Sci Fi movies. I don't understand why some of you even bother going. You already know its a stupid movie and you're gonna hate it. But maybe you DON'T go at all. You enjoy posting only to show how much smarter you are than the average SciFi movie goer. You don't need to go. Read a quick review. Post here how stupid this, that, or the other SciFi movie is, and look, see how much smarter you are than everybody else?

I guess Im bewildered. Is there a SciFi movie in current release or about to be released that doesn't suck or isn't about to suck? I'd like to see it.

I liked it as a bit of escapism - what's not to like when you can see a plane flying alongside a train carriage? - but personally I think Emmerich's The Day After Tomorrow was a much better flick. And it gave you something to think about.

My teenage daughter liked it. I liked it when the cruise ship turned over throwing George Segal over the side. I chuckled when the president bought the farm. It was entertaining, kind of like eating cotton candy.

Avatar is gonna stink. You can tell from the trailers. The plot is hackneyed and predictable, pretends to be "deep" thinking when it's just a CGI-heavy rehash of a plot done 22 times on various generations of Star Trek. James Cameron's head has inflated to something slightly larger than the Titanic. Sigourney Weaver has gotten to be a real dog in her old age. Plus, all CGI stinks.

Just kidding.

Avatar must be good, all the secondary characters on this week's Bones were babbling about it as if it was the new Star Wars. Ah product placement.

We finally got to see it tonight and niether of us really had much of an idea about it except for some clips we'd scene a while back. So for a change I was pretty open minded and some what ignorant of what to expect. I think Emmerick went with the right mix of when to and when not to take itself to sreiously. I do have to agree it is a roller coaster of a cgi-fx flick. I was rather pleased with it though and loved the up down emotional ride it had eg ..........and :woohoo:

The cast was solid and not to heavy. Yes as per most films of this genre I accept that deep personal charactor development is gonna be thin. My wife Sandy made the comment about the captain of the ark looking like he could step onto a star wars film was a giggle and she did have the odd 'give me a break' comment at a couple of scenes which also gave me a giggle. There is a vague referance to some actual and plausable science but it's quickly washed over with plot (not as thin as the science but...), cgi, people and action. Not always in that order :p and the myan thing though spoken about wasn't in my view really dwelled on. In the IA days of disaster flicks there would have been more people/person oriantated suspense with background noise and on set effects. But now with cgi you get people with both interior and exterior scenes about that point of suspense refferance, good or bad it seems to work.

On the whole I'd rate it 8 out of 10. My only real beef is that it seemed just a bit too long, which is how I felt about Transformers 2. They could have trimmed 15-20 minutes off both and not really destroyed either. It will definatly be an addition to my collection.

They also showed a decent trailer of Avatar... OH YEAH! Lets hope there are some good kits to come out with the onslaught of merchandise from that flick.

Cheers,

Alec.

Saw it tonight and it was almost exactly what I expected. It was fun to see on the big screen, but characters and plot as thin as kleenex. Impressive FX and it was good seeing the Serenity villain again. I'd have to look up his name on IMDB to get the spelling correct and I'm too lazy. :)
