View Full Version : A little comp for the X-6 ????
420 Tech R/C 11-10-2009, 04:07 PM http://www.youtube.com/user/academyrulz
The video was shot at My back yard track.A hardpack soil/clay mix. Usually a holeshot/ double dees type of track.
Buggy is running a Ez-run 60a/17.5 BL combo, SMC 520024c lipo, J concepts groovy fronts, academy kit rears with jconcepts foams. I usually run low to mid 15sec laps with my stock GV2.With the mid motor car having only 1 day to test and tune with it I am pulling high 14- low 15 sec lap times. Not too shabby for a buggy with only 6-7 batteries through it..
So let me know what you think from watching the vid.. Enjoy.
badassrevo 11-10-2009, 04:18 PM Looks really good.
Post some close up pics of the idler gear on the transmission and a little how to mabye.
It looks like that could be used to convert a Losi too.
badassrevo 11-10-2009, 04:19 PM Sell some kits!
420 Tech R/C 11-10-2009, 04:36 PM That is pretty much my intentions.

For sure. The external Idler I used is a stock academy peice as is the shaft I used to mount it(front axle shaft cut down to size). It is used to acomplish the same thing X-factory did by releasing the 4 gear trans mision. It's function is to keep the motor rotating the propper direction to use the torque roll from the motor spooling up to help with weight transfer under accelleration. In x-factory's x-6 v.1 buggy the torque roll of the motor was actually hindering weight transfer under accelleration.
As for the how to; I simply calculated a final drive ratio for the 17.5 syystem I was running ( since that would yeild the largest pinion needed) slid the motor back all the way in the motor plate Leaving room for a couple extra teeth larger pinion than i should ever need with a 17.5. I then Placed the idler in place in the gear train using a small peice of threaded rod to mark where the bolt needed to be to hold the idler shaft in place. This was very easy to do since the idler shaft I chose was drilled and tapped all the way through. With this idler placement the pinion gear window is from 23- 35t (for 10.5-17.5 motor ratios). And by simply drilling a mount hole on the top side of the motor plate pinions sizes 12t -24t can be used for running mod motors(10.5 and lower wind motors.).Final versions of this Chassis set will include a motorplate drilled to run the idler in either position.
badassrevo 11-11-2009, 07:28 AM very nice. I have owned a 3 gear and a 4 gear X6. I know what you mean.
munsonator08 11-11-2009, 10:37 PM thats pretty sweet right there man. good job on the build. thing looks like it could have some real potential. seems like it jumps real flat and straight.
psycho02 11-12-2009, 07:22 AM Is that $300 total including the cost of the original kit or after the cost of the original kit? Car looked really really good everywhere except it looked like it was loose coming out of the corners like it had some corner exit oversteer. Thats not always a bad thing though as you can tune that out. Its easy to take steering out but not always easy to put it in.

Psycho that is in the 300.00 range for a compete roller. The first few I sell will be built to order,so they will arrive ARTR, just add your electronics and paint the body.Tires will be mounted, but not glued. My pricing will be definite as soon as I get some quotes back in from a couple body Manufacturers. The bodies I am considering using are already being produced , so the tool up costs would be nill.Mainly I am just seeing what kind of price break they could give me on a bulk lot.
The oversteer on exit is my bad not the car.I should have switched to Holeshots in the rear instead of the kit fusion tires. The fusions were getting some pin fold under accelleration out of the corners as the lugs are a little deeper than holeshots are.So it was more an issue of rear tire choice than anything, But my goal was to give an example of what this conversion can do to a box stock buggy kit, including tires. I usually use the Fusions on my standard GV2 when there is some fluff on the track to bite through where a holeshot lug is too shallow.
J Blaze 11-12-2009, 10:45 AM so now thats done how soon will you be done with the 4wheel drive sc?
your cool !
J Blaze 11-12-2009, 10:46 AM come on I know your working on one.
420 Tech R/C 11-12-2009, 11:07 AM so now thats done how soon will you be done with the 4wheel drive sc?
your cool !
Very soon J.I wish i had a couple more of me right now.LOL.The 4WD SCT is still in the concept Phase. I know it can be done,But the question is can I do it and keep the price competitive so it would be worth doing.:rolleyes:I will be doing at least 1 chassis set for a 4wd sct using an Academy sbv2 as the donor platform. You should see that in the hands of Todd Beutler by x-mas.Just about the time the 4wd slashes start showing up at the tracks.
420 Tech R/C 11-12-2009, 11:21 AM The actual next project on the docket is a carbon chassis for my Gv2 SCT. The one I spliced together is still working just fine, but I have other academy gv2-T owners wanting to build one now. So time to give the truck a facelift.I will be doing a standard configuration chassis for it and a mid motor chassis for it for testing purposes. After driving the mid motor buggy I am very curious to see what the MM layout can do for both the truck, and the sct.
psycho02 11-12-2009, 11:28 AM With that carbon fiber plate chassis (kind of schumacherish in a good way) will there be a lexan undertray?? Also, any testing with Losi or Associated shocks?
420 Tech R/C 11-12-2009, 11:35 AM With that carbon fiber plate chassis (kind of schumacherish in a good way) will there be a lexan undertray??
I have thought about that one long and hard. The answer would be -initially no.In the near future- yes. My current vac-form set-up isnt capable of doing peices that large. That's why I am trying to out source the bodies.I need some infrared elements for it that willl run me in the 600.00 range.Which will also require upgrading my electrical service here at home, which isnt cheap either.
J Blaze 11-12-2009, 02:08 PM can I have your left overs ?hahahahhahahahahahahhaha!!!
see lenman put the traxxas buggy into the A-main at pg.

A bandit in the A- that is awesome.Len is a great example for newbs.Proving that you dont always need all the latest bells and whistles to go out and have fun and do well.
420 Tech R/C 11-13-2009, 12:14 AM Check out the temporary body I fabbed up for it until the Azarashi body I ordered gets here from very honorable China!!:thumbsup:I Made it out of some .030" lexan flat stock I had laying around.I tacked it together with some thin CA. After the paint cures for a couple days I will re-inforce all the seams with a thin layer of GOOP. Keep in mind it only has to stay in one peice long enough to survive 2 race days:hat:
modbugy 11-13-2009, 01:49 AM lets race it I LOVE IT home cars are the bomb, very nice job chad :thumbsup:

Two guys on this forum (Jerzferno and GaryNJ) made bodies for their 1/8th scales using nothing more than an oven to heat the plastic.

Yes, it is possible, but to do it and produce a sellable peice of consistant quality is another story.I can currently make my own wings and other smaller items with my current vacform set-up, but it is not adequate to pull large production peices and maintain consistant quality.
420 Tech R/C 11-18-2009, 02:07 PM I have put this project on hold until I can get a new carbon fiber supplier. The previous supplier I had used sent me a batch of garbage. It was supposed to be 3mm thick stock. What I received was stock with a severe warp and severe thickness issues. The thickness was ranging from 2.2mm- 3.4mm within a 24x24 sheet. The supplier refuses to make the situation right, so he will get no more of my business.
shintastrife 11-18-2009, 04:56 PM all most makes me want to start a custom build myself. what to take a evader ext and make its 4wd but have not set down to think of how to do it yet.
420 Tech R/C 11-18-2009, 05:04 PM What ever you do, dont get CF from a place called compositeenvisions.com . The CF looks really nice until you start checking it for flatness, and thickness.I have a 24x24 peice from them that i cant use for a damn thing! The first peice I got was fine. The second time I ordered from them, garbage, And the guy wont return my e-mails, or phone calls.
shintastrife 11-18-2009, 05:18 PM was thinking of a thin alum chissie maybe 1/8 think. using a lot of stock parts. is't just going to be the main chissie and the shock tower that will give me the trouble every thing else i can make work.
that and if i hand a lay out. to where i would not need to tear my car down it would help to. but cant get that lucky you know
420 Tech R/C 11-20-2009, 01:15 PM Alright, tomorrow will be the MM2's track debut.Going to go run her at washtenaw. It will be great to get some experience with this buggy under race conditions.
420 Tech R/C 11-21-2009, 11:44 PM Alright, I had a very good day with the MM2 buggy @ washtenaw R/C. I finished 1st in the stock A with it. I shoud have TQed with it , but botched the last lap getting back to the line during the 3rd round of qualifying. Regardless I will call this a positive debut if i have ever seen one. I should have the full length video of the main in about a week since Handy racing videos all the A mains at washtenaw.
420 Tech R/C 11-23-2009, 10:41 AM Heres an action shot of the buggy from saturday while it was winning the main.
420 Tech R/C 11-25-2009, 01:34 PM More developments for this buggy- A couple days ago I was contacted by a pro level driver about getting his hands on one of these buggies.I wont drop any names on a public forum since he is currently driving for another chassis sponsor, But I will continue to cheese from ear to ear as I print off his e-mail to frame!!
shintastrife 11-25-2009, 03:14 PM now thats nice. i looked into the place that you sent me but i didnt see any black CF. then again i might now of been looking in the right place. i hope i get the one done i got going. using the sc10gt trany i got for my littel brother car im building by hand its looking to be a nice one.
tats21 11-25-2009, 11:54 PM real good lookin car
420 Tech R/C 11-26-2009, 12:14 PM Thanks Tats.
crashmaster 11-27-2009, 01:59 AM chad you got pm
J Blaze 11-27-2009, 12:05 PM hay chad you can mention my name as the pro driver thats OK!
420 Tech R/C 11-27-2009, 12:34 PM Yeah, I can see the name " J. Toucher" on the ROAR Nats drivers roster!!
J Blaze 11-27-2009, 03:36 PM sounds good to me.
call me anything as long as i can get a ride.
420 Tech R/C 12-03-2009, 09:18 AM Ahhhh, Just Received a nice order of chassis material.Nice and flat with a thickness tollerance of .006" . Much better than the stuff from the previous supplier. So, needless to say that a MM-T and a MM-SCT are on the way soon, and am shooting for the first of the year to show you a 4WD SCT based on the SBV2 4wd buggy.
On a Related note, The MM-T chassis Todd Beutler tested at Proving grounds Sat. Drove just as expected.Considering Todd Stuck to a box-stock set-up as far as camber links, springs, pistons, and oil, the truck was pretty dialed.A day of tuning with it and it should be exceptional. The previously un-tested chassis ended up 4th in a very competitive A stock truck main full of local drivers that have driven the track for weeks.Go Todd!
I on the other hand ended up broken in the 2nd round of qualifying . The front of the car had gotten stepped on the week before at Washtenaw R/C, so I am Chalking the parts failure I experienced up to that. Regardless, I had to run my standard layout GV2 the rest of the night.Took the entire 3rd round to get used to driving the rear motor buggy for the first time in like a month. Was holding my own in 4th for the first 4-5 minutes of the main, ended up on my lid- all done- 4th to 8th in 1 mistake. Regardless it was a fun night of racing.
The MM-2 buggy was Handling the track there at Proving grounds Pretty well The heavy Body was causing alot of chassis roll in the corners. So I bit the bullet and ordered a stock X-factory body for the buggy until the Vaykal body gets here. With a Little trimming in the front end it fits the chassis very nicely. It should fit the bill considering it's 1/4 the weight of the temp. body I made.
The next update wont be for around a week.I have 2 prototype chassis to finish before the northern nationals race at proving grounds on the 12th.
420 Tech R/C 12-09-2009, 11:25 AM I know I said it would be a week before the next update, but I have received some PM's and e-mails asking about how you would run different size spurs with the external counter gear.Well problem solved. Just mount the counter gear to an adjustable cam plate!! See pics.
J Blaze 12-09-2009, 12:59 PM hay can ya pm me tods # please. thanks
420 Tech R/C 12-09-2009, 01:03 PM sendin it over to you J.
420 Tech R/C 12-15-2009, 12:18 PM Alright. We had loads of fun and aggrivation at the northern nats race.Evidently all my bad luck from this outdoor season caught up to me.I broke more stuff Saturday than I have broken in the last year.Durability was severely tested. I broke none of my conversion/prototype peices. All breakage was of Academy stock peices. And it was just me, Todd broke nothing all day.The buggy and truck both handled well.I just couldnt drive mine for crap.Probally had a little to do with the fact that I was running on about 2 hours sleep from getting Todd's new chassis put together the night before.
We did let a couple other drivers drive the buggy and truck through the course of the day.Responses were very positive.
It would be super to get a driver behind the wheel of one of these vehicles with better skills than Todd, or myself, So if you are interested drop me a resume at amymanke@prodigy.net. We would like to announce our first driver, Brandon Nichols(the donger), He has decided to return to R/C racing just to wheel these vehicles.Brandon will be running both a 2wd buggy and stadium truck for us.Very excited to see what he can do with these on the track.
420 Tech R/C 12-15-2009, 12:47 PM By the way , here is a pic of the buggy wearing an "X" body.
420 Tech R/C 12-27-2009, 12:28 AM Heres some pics of the MM2-T. This is the first one to have all 100% machine cut components via N.C. machinery. Not happy with the rear shock tower shape so that will change slightly.. The X-60 body fits it nicely.Cant wait to get it out to the track for some testing!!
420 Tech R/C 12-28-2009, 11:38 PM Heres a pic of the finished truck.
munsonator08 12-29-2009, 12:54 AM truck looks sweet man. very good job, nice paint job as well.
crashmaster 12-29-2009, 01:45 AM not bad chad man
J Blaze 12-29-2009, 01:17 PM sweat ride !!!!!
420 Tech R/C 12-29-2009, 03:18 PM thanx guys.Cant wait to get her out and dialed in!!
J Blaze 12-29-2009, 10:33 PM let me do the dialing in baby! I'll put it through the tests!
crashmaster 12-30-2009, 01:25 AM he would like it back in one peace Mr. Blaze
