The South-West Tour Series
a Joe Myers Event
Proudly Powered and Sponsored by
NOVAK ELECTRONICS & Team ORION

The South-West Tour Series, (one of the LONGEST Continually run R/C Points Series in the U.S.) was established in 2001, when the organization NORRCA was sold for the 3rd time in a 5 year period.

The "TOUR" as it has been referred to since it's first year, was created out of necessity to keep R/C Oval racing alive on the West Coast.

For over a decade preceding the formation of the South-West Tour Series, the NORRCA Organization (which was based in Southern California) had held their own Southern California Paved Oval Series, which was very popular through the late 1990's.

The NEW Owners of NORRCA dropped ALL their traveling series in 2000, and as I took on the task of directing the Oval races, and formed our series, which officially began in 2001.

Next season (2010) will be our 10th Anniversary Tour, and I'm very proud to say, nearly 95% of our racers have been with us, supporting this series those entire 10 years.

The Series:

We race 10 "points" races per season, one per month from February to November (Or December, depending on how dates fall) , we use 2 Throwout events, and award the championship based on the best 8 of 10 races.

The 2009 season was the first year our series was made up of only 2 tracks (SHORT Carpet, and BIG Velodrome) as these have been our most popular venues to date. However, through the years we've run Parking Lots, Permanent Tracks, Short Concrete, 1/4 Scale Tracks and even had a couple years where like NASCAR we included a couple Road Races.

In closing, I just wanted to bring a little information about our small series to those who may not actually KNOW who or what we are.

This is the POINTS battle for out SPORTSMAN 21.5 Class

http://www.southwesttour.com/images/sportsmantop3_2009.jpg

From 1st to 3rd is a 6 point battle, with Brian Bond in the middle, 4 points back to the leader.

BOND is usually a top 3 car on the VELO where the season will end, Patti is a regular Top 5 car, and Myers has been struggling on speed - but has signed with NCM for a one race deal - driving the Flying Pylon.

It's one week until the 2009 season of the SWTour Series comes to a close...

Time to thank NOVAK ELECTRONICS and TEAM ORION for their sponsorship and support of our little series.

When we introduced Brushless / 2s Lipo racing a while back, we knew it was going to give us some great racing. Being able to stay with the same basic battery and motor for 2 full seasons in our 21.5 classes let drivers learn things they never get to learn w/ rapid product changes, and it showed on the results sheets at every race the past 2 seasons.

2010 will be our 10th year of continuously running our Oval Series, and I'm looking for it to once again be a great year of racing. We will be changing some of our classes for the next season however.

We will be changing one of our Primary sponsors, and would like to thank THUNDER POWER Racing for coming on board. This will mean a new direction for our batteries as well.

We will be adding at least one, possibly two classes of 1s lipo to our class line up, and we'll be keeping our popular 2s - 21.5 class. The 21.5 class will be using one of Thunder Power's Race Spec lipo packs that offers affordability to the racer w/o the blistering speeds their full RACE Pack offers. The current plan is to put this class on the 2700 mAh pack for 2010.

The TP 2700 pack is available for a street price in the $50.00 range, and will allow all the current 2s chargers, speed controls, and motor combinations to stay the same, offering a greater overall savings to the racer, and testing has shown this battery to offer plenty of run time and voltage for our (5) minute racing.

we'll see.throttle driving back at the drome?dropping 600 of anything(mah)is gonna have a big effect.would have liked to see 3600 or 3800.

swtour
12-05-2009, 11:39 PM
Hey Dave,

It would have been really easy to go BIGGER, but we've picked up 7 laps on the RUG with the old 3400's, and many have said "It's too fast"

3600's or 3800's would have been even faster yet.

Going BALLISTIC will most likely bring a little more speed, and NEW ESC's will also most likely bring a little more.

Personally, if everything else stayed the same, just the 2700 mAh pack vs the current 3400 pack was changing...I'd bet we'd still pick up speed...

pennyliner
12-06-2009, 02:05 AM
I don't see the 2700mah as a detriment, I have yet to pull more than 2200 out of my 17.5 Nastruck on the velo and even less out of the 21.5 car so I think we will be good to go.

I know in both classes I have picked up several laps at both the rug and the velo, 5 for each class on the rug and 2 laps at the velo so maybe a little less battery combined with all the electrical gizmos on the way we will stay about the same pace we have now.

'10 should be a great season and I look forword to the new challenges.

i gotta say joe i'm not likin this 2700 choice.3400's were droppin off pretty much in the last minute at encino.i think the only way to keep the speed would be to go back to 4 minutes.cost isent a factor because the orions were around 80.00 a pack.i would rather spend 80.00 on 3800 or even 4000 packs then to take such a radical step backwards.or are we going to follow the east coast with 1 cell.you know i dont race on the rug but if it moves closer(like taft)i may show up.in anycase,i may have to park the drome car and just race at hot rods.as far as speed controls go,i'll be sticking with tekin not any of the new ones.would have been nice to stick with a proven formula but i know things change.not your fault but this could mean the end of my racin on the drome.i gotta work next saturday but i was going to head over after work and run 1 or 2 qualifiers and the main.we'll see.its too bad that sponsorship dictates ruining a pretty dam good series

12-06-2009, 02:58 AM
Joe - I'm looking forward to the changes. I haven't seen actual discharge curves on the 2700 Thunder Power packs, but we never used more than 2000 mah in 21.5 with the Orions. The Orion 3200/3400 only measured about 3000 mAh anyway. The 2700's seem like a pretty good choice to keep the speeds reasonable (I bet they will be faster than the Orion's in a few races).

i gotta say joe i'm not likin this 2700 choice.3400's were droppin off pretty much in the last minute at encino

I don't know what you were doing to DROP OFF at the VELO - in 21.5, we never pulled more than 1800 mah in 21.5 (IF THAT) on a 3400 mAh pack.

i think the only way to keep the speed would be to go back to 4 minutes.cost isent a factor because the orions were around 80.00 a pack.

COST isn't a factor to WHO? It IS to me, and several others I know of

i would rather spend 80.00 on 3800 or even 4000 packs then to take such a radical step backwards.

Dave, please don't KNOCK it...at least until you TRY IT... It really pisses me OFF when guys KNOCK something they haven't actully experienced

or are we going to follow the east coast with 1 cell.

I personally don't LIKE 1 cell, but that's ME... I will be offering at least ONE, maybe 2 classes of it... I WILL offer a FAST 7.5 Class for the experts, and if interest is there...a 17.5 or 13.5 class for slower speeds yet. I feel in very short time, that 13.5 will be JUST AS FAST as what we're doing now...

you know i dont race on the rug but if it moves closer(like taft)i may show up.

WORKING hard on THAT change!!!

in anycase,i may have to park the drome car and just race at hot rods.

That would be a shame...

as far as speed controls go,i'll be sticking with tekin not any of the new ones.

IMHO the TEKIN IS a NEW ONE, and what opened the door to the NEWER ONES...

would have been nice to stick with a proven formula but i know things change.

AGREE 100%, and I feel this 2700 is closer to the SAME formula than anything BIGGER...and it's CHEAPER

not your fault but this could mean the end of my racin on the drome.i gotta work next saturday but i was going to head over after work and run 1 or 2 qualifiers and the main.we'll see.

its too bad that sponsorship dictates ruining a pretty dam good series

Sponsorship DOESN'T Ruin the Series, it keeps it operating. W/O it, I was going to END it two years ago cause it was costing ME too much money. Now it LIVES and CONTINUES...and doesn't get a raised ENTRY FEE to keep it alive!!! -- THANK YOU NOVAK and ORION for making that happen...and to THUNDER POWER Racing for joining in to keep it alive

SWTour 10 . coming in February!!!

You should try having a little bit more of an optimistic attitude. Joe keeps a lot of oval races running in SoCal and all he hears is bitching. I would have quit a long time ago, but I hope he can continue for the 10th year and then wrap it up.

Joe, I think you're right. I'd bet 13.5/1c open (no battery, esc, or body rules) will very soon be as fast as your 21.5/2c cars have been this season. The 7.5/1c class with the new equipment is closer to Open Mod of the 4 cell days I'm hearing.

Congrats on another year, and on signing a new sponsor to provide the money and equipment the SWTour needed to continue!

Great Thread Joe!
Really shows how much the South West Tour has contributed for us Oval racers out here on the left coast. Thank goodness I've had the privilege of participating in the series that you have put heart and soul into.

When we made the transition to brushless/Li-poly, you made the "big picture" decisions that made the series even better. I'm confident the same will happen this year. The classes you have laid out sound great to me. Congratulations on the Thunder Power sponsorship for the SWT. Thunder Power batteries are a high quality product that and their worth every penny.

I'm looking forward to doing some carpet racing in 2010... (Just need to decide on a car..lol)

KOZ,

I lost this someplace, I'm not sure what you are asking....

If you are asking if it will be "Open MFG", - February will start the SWT season and it would be "Product Limited" to Novak Motors and THUNDER POWER batteries as it stands right now.

A January race (if I am able to pull one off) will probably be OPEN and have some warmup for SNOWBIRDS classes...since it is NOT part of the SWT season.

Joe....

When it comes down to it, I really wish more promoters and track owners put in the effort you do to create what you have created out there on the coast.

I don't always agree with you but you clearly understand what racers out there want and you keep providing them with a pretty awesome racing experience it sounds like. I am also really glad that you are giving the 1c classes a try. It may not be the best thing for you and your guys, but you are trying it, and that is what matters.

Good luck to you guys next season, you have done a fine job in making it happen.

It's been raining most of the week, and there's a 95% chance of rain tomorrow, and we're scheduled for our Final VELO race of the year.

Just a NOTE: Our West Coast "WINTER WARM UP" Presented by THUNDER POWER RACING will be a great practice for the SNOWBIRDS...so I plan to allow all SNOWBIRD LEGAL stuff to be run - for those guys who are heading to FLORIDA the following week.

IF we have enough entries...I will try to keep the "BIRDS" racers kind of together so they can work on that stuff...

Hey guys,

It sounds like we're gonna have a pretty decent turnout in TAFT this Saturday for our first of what should be many oval races at the Lincoln Jr. High School.

Although I'm still a little unsure of who is planning to run what - there seems to be a lot of interest in the actual race day.

Possibilities include

17.5 / 1 cell (regular stock car)
13.5 / 1 cell (w/ COT BODIES for the snowbirds)
10.5 / 1 cell (regular stock car)
7.5 / 1 cell (regular stock car)

21.5 / 2 cell (stock car bodied)
21.5 / 2 cell (NASTRUCK) SNOWBIRDS - OPEN BATTERY
21.5 / 2 cell (NASTRUCK) SWT

"WINGLESS" Sprint - Dirt Cars (unknown motor/battery combo?)

anything else???

ONE CELL CLASSES WILL BE 4 minute?? (17.5 would/could be 5 min)?

Reminder: TRINITY Sticky Fingers is the ONLY Approved Tire Traction Compound for TAFT, and should be available at the track.

There WILL be limited practice available on Friday evening -
Doors should be opened by 7 a.m. on Saturday Morn.

Hopefully this race will answer many questions several racers (and myself) have about what's what for the 2010 season, along with helping guys get ready for the SNOWBIRD NATIONALS in Sunny (but FREEZING COLD ) Florida!!

Here's a link to the GOOGLE MAP for the Lincoln Jr. High - MAP TO SCHOOL

ARE YOU READY??

Joe
