View Full Version : cheap flying sub lighting!
Lou Dalmaso 10-12-2009, 11:14 AM Guys,
I was at a Food Lion last weekend and picked up a very good and cheap lighting alternative for the reactor wall of the Flying Sub
The have the Halloween decorations out and we all know what kind of goodies you can find if you look. I found lighted plastic pumpkins selling for around 5 bucks. Upon inspection, I saw that they had a 1in circle circut board that has a red, green, and blue LED on it and it cycles thru the colors to make all of the variations of color. Runs on three aaa batteries. A little surgery and it would make a sweet little reactor wall light.
thought y'all might like the heads up
mcdougall 10-12-2009, 11:40 AM Cool... I found a bunch of Halloween decorations at the Dollar store and now I'm illuminating my Addams Family Haunted House for the Grand total of $1.50 !!! Flickering lights and all  'Seek and Ye shall find' :p

jbond 10-12-2009, 01:42 PM These are not cheap but I noticed Ikea now has a bunch of LED lighting kits for their modular shelving. They're $49--I know, ridiculous--but some of the arrays looked like they would be very useful for spaceship internal lighting.
djnick66 10-12-2009, 01:51 PM I found one of those color changing pumpkins in Wal Mart. it was cheap. The trick is to go first thing when Wal Mart opens the day AFTER Halloween... grab the stuff on discount before they box it up and send it back to the warehouse or some clearance place.
richlen2 10-15-2009, 11:17 PM You can purchase any kind of LED for pennies. I bought 100 LEDS that flash between Red, Blue and White for $10. You can even buy all kinds of assortments for that price.
Lou Dalmaso 10-16-2009, 08:26 AM ^yes, but you still need to make it work. Obviously you can buy the raw materials.
these are "drop in- plug and play" solutions we're talking about.
gareee 10-16-2009, 09:24 AM There's a great set of battery powered lights from sylvania at Target now.. they have 18 lights, and 4 are flashing lights!
I'm using a set for me 1:1 scale ghostbusters ghost trap, and I'm thinking a set would be prefect for the big seaview. You'd need to extend some of the wires, but thats pretty easy to accomplish.

I kinda hate to admit this, but I'm a model builder, not an electrician; now you're talking MY language! :hat:
MonsterModelMan 10-16-2009, 09:45 AM Lou,
We don't have Food Lion this far north! But I get your drift....great idea to find stuff this time of year that is already assembled and ready to go!
MMM
gareee 10-18-2009, 11:19 AM K mart sells some skulls with the exact same lighting in them...and they also have color changing lights you put into pumpkins 50% sheaper using the same system.
Moonman27 10-18-2009, 01:53 PM I have been tinkering with cheapo lighting gadgets out of some toys for a while and have taught myself a little bit about simple lighting circuits. I ain't no electrician either, but I will blow out a few dollars,(and a few LEDS) rather than pay insanely high prices for some of the lighting kits available. I think charging 4-5 times more for a lighting kit than the model is just well....stupid,with all due respect. Thanks for the heads up about Target's stuff.
