View Full Version : 1/4 Scale Sprints on Dirt
Harper 10-12-2009, 10:10 AM Hello guys, I have been racing RC for a while now and have been building/racing 1/10 scale sprints for a while now but I am brand new to 1/4 scale.
We have a local dirt track with a pretty good group of guys already running and local interest is gaining and I couldnt resist any longer so I am currently building a 1/4 scale sprint to race in the dirt.
I was wondering.......
1. What other groups/tracks are out there running on dirt?
2. What changes are you guys doing to make these cars work right on dirt?
I know I have LOTS of ideas in my head I am planning on doing different to my car to make it more of a "Dirt car" than an asphalt car and I would love to hear your thoughts/ideas on this as well.
Thanks for any info!

Hi Jeff - Another racer. That is good news! Take a little time and read / search through some of these threads. There is a lot of good info on here.
Sonny B 10-12-2009, 11:38 AM It's good to have Jeff on here. In addition to being a friend and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, he is a incredible fabricator and one of the best 1/10 scale Nitro sprint racers in the country. I have no doubt that his 1/4 scale will be one of the best looking and performing cars out there.
Here are a few photos of some of the Nitro Sprints he has built.

IN2RACIN 10-12-2009, 12:17 PM Jeff - Where are you from? What track(s) will you race?
Harper 10-12-2009, 01:19 PM Thanks for the kind words Sonny. I didnt realize how small the 1/10 scale cars are untill I got home from Kansas with the 1/4 scale car and put them side by side LOL! If I cant make this 1/4 scale car look "scale", there is something wrong with me LOL! It is going to be a fun winter project for sure.
I am from Oklahoma and will be racing at Coody Creek raceway in Muskogee, Ok and I would imagine Timberline at some point as well. Outside of that, I am not sure what other 1/4 scale dirt tracks there are. I am used to traveling racing 1/10 scale so if it is not too far and there are people to race with, I'll try it LOL! My understanding is the promotor at Coody Creek (which is also a dirt cart track) is planning some indoor cart races this winter that the 1/4 scales might get to run in as well. That could be fun and give them some exposure as well.
IN2RACIN 10-12-2009, 02:51 PM Are you only running it on dirt?
Harper 10-12-2009, 03:59 PM I wouldnt say "never" but the dirt is certainly where my interest lies. Nothing against the pavement at all, just always been a dirt track fan.
I figured I would try to build my car as a "dirt car" rather than try to drive a pavement car on the dirt.
Some of the guys have scaled their cars and they are at approx. 51% rear weight (probably OK for a pavement car) and on the dirt, they are having an oversteer condition (even after removing the nose wing) and many are moving the top wings WAY back and with a bunch of wing angle to try and get the car to hook up. I gotta beleive if I build my car with a higher rear weight percentage and a little softer sprung, maybe it will work a little better on dirt AND with the wing where it should be LOL!
I could be wrong (been wrong lots of times LOL). Some of you guys may be laughing at me!
Obviously I am new to 1/4 scale. I know I will have fun trying to figure it out!

jeff, these are the guys you are looking for!! http://lqss.proboards.com/index.cgi
They all run on dirt and are maniacs! probably the largest 1/4 scale sprint car racing organizations out there!
fish4check 10-12-2009, 09:30 PM Good evening Jeff and welcome to the world of 1/4 scale! Trust me you will really enjoy this class.
Look forward to seeing you at Timberline next year and if we get to host the Dirt Nationals make sure you pencil that in on your 2010 calendar of things to do.

How ya doing mate!
Ya,
It was a nasty rumor for sure. More like a good education! Seriously I did look into it. Got some great feedback here on the forum. Why asphalt is the most popular it is also wayyyyyyyyyyy expensive to construct. After getting some great advice from Freddie and others on the right construction details,Base, drainage surface and the like.
I just simple can't afford it.
With Coody Creek and myself being the dirt tracks of the midwest we are hoping we could organize a heartland type dirt track series similar to what the boys have done in the Tri-State and Cornbelt series. For 1/4 scale.
We will have to see with what the offseason can do as far as organizing something?
Right now I am hoping we can get the dirt national race and have as good of time as we had this year, next year.
BTW,
I am doing some verbal consulting for TEYS Brothers in Beenleigh.
I hope I have to make a trip!!!

Thanks Todd,
Ya we all had a great time this year. I plan on making one trip your way this next year too with the new GN car.

I really don't have any setup secrets to share and it would be like the pupil telling the teacher what to do Jeff.
But I spend hours and hours making sure my car is free from binding and it is setup super soft.
I use the hpi fork oils in my shocks and soft springs.
3/8ths stagger rear and straight up in front here at Timberline. 14/80 on the gearing.
