The Hostile Racing Products Bajafest 2009 brough on the next new era of 1/5 scale racing. With the new RCRC EDM bodies out, several people have custom made their own, and Big Scale oval racing has begun. The look of the larger cars with the full bodies is amazing, not to mention the sounds made by them. Add some dirt & small rocks being thrown from the rear tires & It's just like the real thing. As a group we traveled 12 hours to up-state NY for the event from Indiana, and my main concentration was the EDM oval class. Here are a few pictures & videos of how it all went.

On a personal note I made it to TQ with a 2nd & a 1st in Qualifying. I had also won a new camera as a door prize, and had promised some cool video footage from it. The A-main footage is a result of much effort & is also a first that I know of with multiple angle on-board video views & also a trackside view as well. I really thought I had won, but in the video, you can see when the 2nd place car got around me in a spin. This was by far the most fun I have had racing & there will soon be a latemodel body coming too. Making the cars even bigger, but removing the wheel to wheel contact. That will be some good racing too.

Came across these last night on YouTube looking through EDM videos. Man, those things would be a blast to run. You're lucky you can get a class of those going out there.

a new 5b is a little over $1000 about the same as a 1/4 scale just a little less.

Yeah, I knew they were expensive. Couldn't believe the price of the regular bodies even. Was in Extreme a few weeks back and some dude brought his in and asked Butch to paint up a body for him. Butch said, how much do these things cost? Dude was like $200.00. You should have seen the look on Butch's face.

It's all in what you want to spend your money on. I know guys with 45,000$ in a Harley & I think thats excessive too, but who's to tell. If you enjoy it & have the cash to do it, More power to you !

I'd rather drive a little further and race dirt.

There have been 2 official races. One in up state NY & the second in NC. There are tracks popping up all over the place. There is a dedicated track in VA & one in MD. We are going to have a track here at our shop this spring. We are in Monon Indiana, which would be the closest one to you that I know of. We would enjoy having you over for some good fun & racing though.

Amen! Still cheaper than full scale racing.

That looks like good fun right there. If there was a track close by, I would give it a shot.

The latest creation from RCRC Racing is this 1/5 scale Latemodel body. It has the awesome look, but also makes the 5b platform much larger. With this huge amount of surface area, the downforce on this body is amazing. The first test was held a week or so ago in Virginia Beach, & there will be more this weekend. As for right now the release date is just prior to Christmas, so if this looks interesting to you. Be ready to have yours done by spring, & come have fun with us at the many tracks popping up all over the East coast & I know some are showing up out west too.

Check it out:

by the way there are 1/5 5B clones like 400.0 to 800.00 e-bay. depends on the time of year.

you only need a couple upgrades to the 5b, shocks and the shock areas, use the plastic parts for a-arms, they are very cheap to buy and they keep your car from getting twisted. kinda like a indy car better to break some thing cheap. plus aluminum adds weight. get the pipe that fits out the back of car inside it. all you need. like 140.00 a body add gas n your ready to go. oh sway bars is good also.

i can not wait till summer.

Butch,
Do those 5B clones hold up or is it just worth the extra money for the real 5B? Still looking to race with you guys next year. I had talked with Scott and Mike at Freddies a few times but I am a dirt guy at heart. Is your dirt oval really going to happen next spring. I also watch the Freddies 1/4 scale link and see that you hope to hold a dirt 1/4 scale race too? I only have the cash for 1 toy right now so I want to get the most use whether it be 1/4 asphalt or 1/5 dirt.

my buddy howard can make the modified bodies. he can make the edm also. and yes i will have the track running in the psring as soon as it drys out to finsih the track, i have the container price i can get that any time. i have the railing for the drivers stand. i will run on sundays. freddies is saturday for black top.

yes the clones are good for oval racing the shocks are the only thing bad on any 5b just some modifications and you could run all year with one car and 1 set of tires. 5b's would be less money than the 1/4 scale asphalt. tires are the problem with black top. 50.00 each and you will use 2 sets a season. plus 1/4 scale is really tough to learn to run. they are just like the real cars. my 4th year i hope to win a couple times this year. took 3 years to make the main.

i am coming out this year with a dif in a 1/4 scale black top car, i can't wait to see if it works out, if so the tire problem will decrease because i will have all 4 tires on the track abd they will not burn up as fast. if the dif works i am thinking the other care will be obsolete. we will see.

i also have a nascar dirt model 1/4 scale that should be fun with a 260 motor with a pipe.

hit the turn and the gas, blast sideways around the turn.
get your cars ready we are racing this year. i have 10 real dirt car racers and they are selling there real cars and going to run 5b's.
think dirt in 2010

890.00 for 5b and 180.00 for body and race it all year long. the plastic parts are cheap

do not upgrade it cost to much for nothing.

What classes and what engine and setups are you guys running with the 5B.
As Butch mentioned, he is working on building a track in eastern Ohio and i'm just curious while i'm building a car what you guys are running? Hopefully someday we will all be able to meet up at a track and race against one another.

The only one out there is a prototype, so video could be a bit away. It had been planned with this car, but weather caused problems & now it's cold out. Coming Soon ...

pitvan : where can I pick one up and how much?

They will be available on LargeScaleRC . com when they become available. They were due to be ready by end of December, but seems it will take possibly a month longer. Soon though ... Price is yet to be determined.

The rules for these just forming. As for the first couple races, there were basically no rules. All EDM cars run together, any engine & any combo. What is being discussed is a Stock & Mod class. Stock being any 23 or 26 cc stock car with body. Mod. including anything you can do to the car. Spring will tell on the latest rules, but each track can set it own as well.

Sounds great with an Eastern Ohio Track opening, & With ours here in Northern Indiana. We should be able to get a serious group of racers going. We want to get people ready for our up coming event. Hope to see everyone there.

For this particular class it is for 5b chassis cars & does have to be 1/5 scale. Eventually our oval track could be used for 1/4 scale I'm sure. We would sure like to see the Ingall's crowd come up for our event. I might take a shot at some pavement racing this year too. I need to save up & get me one of those killer Cat5 cars Scott builds. I know we had a blast a couple years ago with our 5b's out there.

Guys,
Don't get too excited about dirt racing yet at Butch's. I live about 20 miles from him and have been waiting 2 years for him to build this so called dirt track. I spent $1200 on a 1/5 dirt late model just for his track and so far, it is been sitting in my work shop. Lesson well learned. He has been so gung hoe but has yet to break ground after two seasons. I gave up and went 1/8 dirt oval racing instead. {Its the only dirt track close by} Would love to go 1/5 or 1/4 scale dirt racing. Maybe if I get to GA I'll look you guys up.
I don't mean to bash this guy but so far for two years, its only been a pipedream. I know of 4 guys who built cars for his track which to date, has yet to happen.

I LIKE THE 1/5 STOCK CAR BODY FOR 1/5 CARS. 140.00 IS BETTER THAN 200.00 FOR LATE MODEL BODY. I HAVE THE NASCAR BODY I AM TRYING TO GET IT MOUNTED.

AS FAR AS 1/8 THEY MAKE A LATE MODEL BODY FOR THEM. I WILL LOOK SOME MORE AND SEE WHAT THEY HAVE.

I am ordering the lap counter software.

HOPE FOR A DRY SPRING SO I CAN GET TRACK DONE FASTER. I CAN NOT WAIT TO RACE. I THINK WE WILL HAVE ALOT OF RACERS ONCE WE GET GOING.

ONE THING KEEP YOUR STOCK MUFFLERS WE MAY HAVE TO RUN THEM ON THE 5B
